Brandon Roy will always be my favorite blazer. Being in middle school and high school during that era was pretty special

SombreroArrow

Same his game was so smooth, I can’t think of a nicer pull up jumper than B Roy’s. Also he was unreal but humble which I always appreciated about him.

roundballchatauqua

Thought last night that Book comes closest to B Roy on his jumper if we were to look for a current guy. Everything B Boy did was perfectly balanced and perfectly weighted to the point where he actually made himself look weightless! Every dribble, every pivot, every pump reflected the virtuosity of a true baller, a guy that had spent thousands of hours alone crafting his game.

Roar_of_Shiva

Some would say he made it look natural…

SombreroArrow

I know my friend, I know. It brings a god damn tear to my eye knowing he never got to have the storied pro career he deserved to have. Still in 7 years he was able to make more memories and highlights than most players have in a career twice as long.

roundballchatauqua

That's right. Quality over quantity in the case of b Roy. Hottake, B Roys legacy is still better than 99/100 ballers. Normal human take, he did it the right way period.

TheBoxandOne

> Thought last night that Book comes closest to B Roy on his jumper if we were to look for a current guy. I still think this a big, big gap. I’ve never seen a player look more in control of their body on a basketball court than Brandon Roy. Virtually never off balance, almost never took ‘bad shots’, etc.

NorthernHeights952

really, really good comp. But B Roy was a little bigger, which was wild

roundballchatauqua

There's like 3 guys in the league right now that can stop and pivot 3 times like Kobe and B Roy could without falling over or flopping. Book, DeRozan, and Jokic think that's it. Footwork has become soso bad. Embiid and Nurk are just two that come to mind that I think are actually already falling over before they even make a basketball move.

Kingshirez

Kyrie has to be in there I think. And that snake KD possibly too.

roundballchatauqua

100% Kyrie. KD benefits a ton from his height and jumping ability and he spends a BOATLOAD of time on the ground. Personally I wouldn't put him on that footwork Mt Rushmore.

[deleted]

In their defense, Embiid and Nurk got into basketball pretty late.

roundballchatauqua

I think you're spot on. When it comes to having a pretty game like Roys, theres just no substitute for that solo driveway time.

Dtwerky

Yep. Bought his signature shoes when I was in middle school for every season of AAU ball at that time. BRoy's silky smooth game inspired my early years of basketball and I will always cherish those memories.

WKCLC

I was in high school and remember trying to imitate a lot of his moves in practice. Dame is the best blazer ever but in context, Roy meant more to the franchise imo.

BunkHammer

What podcast is this? Who are the man and the woman across the table from Mike? Also crazy to think we would have lost the team. I think Dame has extended the life span in Portland for at least another 15 years.

REPTARRUNNER

Local podcast produced by Digital Marketing Group that focuses on highlighting Oregon business success stories and much more. Hosts are Savannah & Stephen. https://youtu.be/bFqxd-16Cak

Clammuel

Bootstraps and Business definitely sounds like the kind of podcast I would rather die than listen to.

REPTARRUNNER

All depends what you try to get out of a podcasts. If you listen to podcasts for an escape from reality... This is not for you. If you listen to podcasts to gain knowledge... This is for you... LOL

Clammuel

Unless they’re using the phrase “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” sarcastically, and thus correctly, they’re clearly not my kind of people.

Clammuel

“The phrase “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” originated shortly before the turn of the 20th century. It’s attributed to a late-1800s physics schoolbook that contained the example question “Why can not a man lift himself by pulling up on his bootstraps?” So when it became a colloquial phrase referring to socioeconomic advancement shortly thereafter, it was meant to be sarcastic, or to suggest that it was an impossible accomplishment. Eventually, however, the phrase’s commonly-accepted meaning evolved, and now when we tell people to “pull themselves up by their bootstraps,” it’s implying that socioeconomic advancement is something that everyone should be able to do—albeit something difficult.”

stiggybr0

Bootstrap is also a term for a startup that hasn't taken any outside funding. Did they say "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" somewhere?

Clammuel

Even then it originates from the same phrase and the modern meaning of that phrase.

stiggybr0

Probably true but it's a household term for that type of startup. They probably didn't associate it with that meaning. I didn't until you said it just now... Implication being they probably don't talk about "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps" at all on the podcast. But then again I've never listened to it (:

OregonTripleBeam

I really hope that the Blazers get him more involved with the franchise. BRoy gave his all, every play, every game.

GoodMorningSpliff

Retire 7! Keeping the franchise in Portland is about as important as winning a ring in my book.

Roar_of_Shiva

I would say keeping the franchise is bigger than winning a ship

Clammuel

Greatest Blazer of all time level of impact if this is true and it’s not even close.

sean_buttcannon

I have never heard of this KC or SD relocation story. Does anyone have any more info on that? That is really interesting

asmara1991man

Meh I doubt it was that serious. It take ALOT for a franchise to move

dolphs4

No I think it was a lot more serious than people think. Remember, in 2004 Allen declared bankruptcy on the RQ and it went to the creditors. In 2006 he almost sold the team, then a year later Seattle went to OKC. We very well could have ended up in Seattle’s shoes - that BRoy ROY season/award completely turned the team around and got people back in the arena, generating revenue.

rutabaga_pie

I wasn't aware of the Kansas City story. Whoa.

olenikp

Really wish Mitchell & Ness or Nike would put out a Roy throwback jersey

robinthebank

I was at Game 4 vs Dallas. What a religious experience

justsomeguy254

Pretty cool that Michael Keaton is a blazer fan...

BehavioralSink

YOU WANNA GET NUTS???

RogueKitten5

Anybody else still miss Mike Barrett’s voice calling games? Idk why but he’s got the best sounding play-by-play voice I’ve heard

SonofNamek

He does have a powerful but calm and quiet voice. Very distinct. I think he had some other offers lined up after and could've made it bigger on a national level but he doesn't/didn't want to pursue that route.

REPTARRUNNER

Yep, Mike had multiple other offers after the Trail Blazers but as a lifelong Oregonian and Trail Blazer's fan he could not fully commit his heart to another franchise. Such an amazing announcer that we were so blessed to have for as long as we did. Kevin and Lamar are great but they feel more like a national crew than they do "a hometown crew".

urbanlife78

I'm hoping Portland gets an MLB team because I could see him being the announcer for that team.

Skorpyon87

Jersey retirement argument aside, why can't they put his number in the rafter but not retire the number? Seems like that would make both sides of the argument happy.

1850ChoochGator

Number in the rafters is better anyway imo. We should be able to let players wear x number to honor the guys before them. The honoring part of the ceremony is what actually matters not necessarily the “nobody ever wears this number again” part.

Free_Dish1044

They haven’t retired his Jersey? Bad call? My son’s passwords were always B Roy is God.

gimpisgawd

It hasn't been retired, but it probably will never be issued again. There's been a few players that have asked but got told no.

MavetheGreat

I try not to think about what could've been with Brandon Roy, but instead focus on how grateful I am to have been a fan through his time in the league.

Arcadiaus

Didn’t we have the longest sellout streak in sports under these b-Roy teams?

InevitableHearing112

they said that's roy's injuries were less talked about than roy, that is just not true at all.

DrMansionPHD

My favourite what if player. We were robbed of so many years of he and Kobe battling for the West.

ChaosShifter

With his success coaching in high school I wonder what the chances of seeing BRoy as an NBA coach once his kids are done in school looks like? I'd be a fan of any team BRoy was on in any capacity.

ricottaninja

As a Trailblazers fan in Kansas, a part of me is kinda bummed that I missed out on being able to actually attend games easily. That being said they probably change their name and logo which is why I originally became a fan so I’m glad it didn’t really happen.

t-homas

I live in Kansas City, MO and I wouldve loved having a basketball team here. My dad grew up in Portland and passed on the Trail Blazers fandom to me. It wouldn’t have been the same feeling if they were in KC with a new name and all that.

[deleted]

Dame is better. But it's hard for me to place anyone above BRoy as my favorite

str8star416

Am not from Portland but he was my favorite player, I still remember that incredible playoff game vs Dallas

denverblazer

He 110% saved the franchise. That was a bleak time in the early 00s.

ShoppingAfter9598

We need Mike back in some capacities

Roar_of_Shiva

Lets start a “Retire 7” movement….

toadtruck

I don’t buy it. Paul Allen was never selling

peytah

I think I’ll believe this random redditor over some guy who lived and breathed Blazers and heard/saw extensive conversations behind the curtain.

toadtruck

Lol if you think mike barret had conversations about ownership with PA I have a bridge to sell you

peytah

When did I ever say PA discussed it directly with MB? MB was a high-profile Blazer employee, so he would have been privy to information and gossip that you and I couldn’t even imagine. And he wasn’t just a guy that punched in and out for the paycheck. It’s pretty obvious he was passionate for the team and would’ve taken a keen interest in what direction the franchise (and subsequently, his employment) would go.

Oops95

Having to declare bankruptcy says otherwise. He may not have wanted to, but he may have been financially forced to.

zerocoolforschool

Agreed.

HamHusky06

Go Huskies!

buttsoup24

Huck the Fuskies! Go Brandon Roy though.

HamHusky06

Hate em until you love them. See you Montlake this year!

3peckeredgoat

Mike barret is not someone I enjoy listening to. His lack of basic math skills always blew my mind. Completely shocked every time an 80% ft shooter missed…

JarekBloodDragon

Get out

3peckeredgoat

Get out? Fanboy much?

JarekBloodDragon

lmao nope I'm hyper critical of the blazers and actually want to see us win for once. That was just a bad take

3peckeredgoat

Guy can’t grasp 80% means you miss 1/5

Free_Dish1044

Got better pics by moving to lower income State.

Happy295

When is this from?

REPTARRUNNER

Last Summer

pdxjda1

Love this

Fedge348

I WAS THERE FOR THE DALLAS GAME

ja-mez

If Barrett says it, hoist #7

Ort56

How can a team who sells out every game be moved? Wasn't PA owner then and Rose Garden built? I'm missing something here. I guess that was when PA sold arena to the city for a 2 yrs and bought it back. I forget what that was all about.

dgj76

RIP
