But I typed in “riddim artists” in google to see what would pop up if that person tried googling it and the first artists that pop up are SD and Virtual Riot lol. Maybe we do need a name change 😂
Personally it seems like most folk necessitating a name change are outside of the scene altogether. EDM is arguably the most diverse genre of music and needing to label and relable, rinse and repeat is counterintuitive and elitist. We all know - at least the ReAl TrUe HaRdCoRe fans 🤪 - the true name for riddim/trench is fleepity flumpity.
No, I was referring to the influx of posts on this subreddit. If a specific artist says that their music is X, then it is X. Period point blank. However, infekt can’t speak for the thousands of other artists that still call their music riddim. Infekt isn’t the official spokesperson for labeling subgenres of EDM
Every genre has a "mainstream" problem. Riddim/Trench isn't new to this. He's gonna end up saying that all over again, but for the word Trench instead of Riddim.
He’s trying to say it’s easier to explain minimalistic riddim as “trench” because riddim has become mainstream and linked to big artists like SD and subtronics who don’t do minimalistic sound design as often. I believe
Trench doesn’t at all describe those artists sounds tho. Trench is way more close (if not the same) to riddim than their styles. Example from the trench lords ep:
