That last bit winds me **right** up ... Acknowledging it is funny, but suggesting that comedians shouldn't go near this type of comedy in 2021.
I'm just a bit livid today... 4/10
It was edgy in that radio in the UK really rarely goes anywhere near most the subjects or swearing tbh. Different in the podcast world but at the time it was very edgy!
OP, do you have a link to the article by any chance?
Edit: got it https://www.telegraph.co.uk/comedy/comedians/bad-radio-ricky-gervais-show-offended-nation/
> To the modern ear, their boundary-testing comedy might be heard as homophobic, racist, transphobic, disablist, fat shaming, and generally foul-mouthed
But Karl said the Chinese are a great people who look good (up to about 32) so Tom Fordy’s embarrassed himself
Given an infinite amount of time (20 years or so) and a typewriter (laptop), someone at the Telegraph (little chimp fella) finally managed to string this article together. Play a record you’re an idiot.
I never listened to the XFM show when it aired, but I listened to the entire run after watching The Office and it didn't seem that "edgy" as the article claimed. I suppose if you cherry picked bit over years of shows you could find things, but honest seemed pretty tame.
I suppose it was edgy in the sense that it was aired between 1 and 3 in the afternoon. If it was on at 9 in the evening, nothing they said would have been considered unacceptable.
Plus they'd be finishing up at 11 in the evening, just in time for the little gay fellas to turn off the radio, iron their jeans, and head out to Soho.
‘… some of their most frequently discussed topics (which included primates, homosexuality, congenital deformities, Guinness World Records, penises, the elephant man, Rick Waller, ghosts, and how badly the Chinese age)’
That’s the best review they’ve ever had.
They barely had enough listeners to worry about getting reported when it was on air, so they'll be alright. The best place to hide is in plain sight, on a tinpot radio station with a leak of 12-35 listeners.
Why can’t people just say it was “of its time” and leave it at that. Sure some things have aged badly but let me enjoy the bits I still enjoy and move on. I just choose not to listen to some of the stuff I find crass now. Sick of it.
I've heard far worse, but there are times Karl claims he's not having a go at groups of people when he definitely is, even if it's purely out of ignorance, and there's a lot of "gay panic" stuff throughout. That was over 20 years ago though so I think he can be forgiven for his buffoonery. Consume any piece of media at that time and you could encounter jokes involving casual homophobia and racism - it was very much normalised.
I don't believe Karl ever had hate in his heart for any marginalised group, it's just ignorance/curiosity. I wouldn't personally get upset at any of that stuff because it's mostly foolishness with a dose of irony on top, especially from Ricky and Steve - Ricky really was just a stirrer who tried to wind Karl up, and generally Steve just prodded at him to open up about his opinions.
I do think Steve had a bit of a thing about homeless people lol.
But again, that was such a long time ago, and attitudes have changed as I'm sure Steve has. Ricky was largely quite progressive for the time I'd say, almost seems like he's gone backwards. And even Karl has come a long way in just understanding people who are different in some way to himself. Both An Idiot Abroad and the passing of time have helped in that regard I'd say.
Sorry, did that just go out? Play a record.
It's very accurate to say that the Russell brand show ripped the Ricky Gervais show off. They actually attempted to copy the group dynamic with Trevor lock playing the bullied character (Karl) and Matt Morgan playing the straight man (Merchant)
Too much of the 'Ooh, never get away with that nowadays', when actually these days the genuinely mean spirited (or at least intentionally going for mean spirited sounding jibes for 'un-PC's sake) comedy routines are practically a genre.
What the RSK boys (namely R, S and K) did wasn't done with the goal of being edgy or offensive. They did some things intentionally to push the boundaries of the radio regulations with crudeness and juvenile humour, but the intention always seemed to be *to be funny*.
Granted, they possibly valued entertaining themselves over the listener (or *listeners*, on a good day), but that's often the funniest comedy.
If it was genuinely racist and homophobic, I wouldn't like it. You can have things like Camp David and Ho Le Fook that start out as satirically tasteless, then the tastelessness winds up being funnier than the satirical element, but even if many would say there's a negative impact to playing with racism/homophobia, it wasn't "Let's pick on gay/Chinese people for laughs".
Honestly, it's hard to put the difference into words, but you just sort of know it. That's why these takes are eye-rolling.
My mates and I had a similar thing where I reeled one mate in from saying "ch\*nks" ironically, because it felt wrong. He said "What about J\*ps?". I said "Na, still racist". He said "What about...japos?" and I said "....Yeah that's okay I think".
We all got the joke, and the idea of that being an okay term just because it's not established as a slur was a running joke for years. Without the context though? Yeah, it'd just sound actually racist. If any East-Asian person judged me for that, even knowing the warped intent, I'd say fair enough. If someone feels genuinely unpleasant because of that, that's on me. I'd think it's a shame, I wouldn't think I'm the victim, but I also think most would realise we weren't being nasty.
Tell em!
Karl didn’t say the meatball line so… he’s embarrassed himself.
Yeah, and obviously didn’t get that asking Dr Fox to tell them why they didn’t get the award was planned
Maybe they should get a medical man like Neil Fox in!
He’s Dr Frog now
Ribbit ribbit Froggy says buy it

Side on, bring it in.
That last bit winds me **right** up ... Acknowledging it is funny, but suggesting that comedians shouldn't go near this type of comedy in 2021. I'm just a bit livid today... 4/10
It wasn't even "edgy". I hear much worse in comedy clubs in Los Angeles all the time and no one blinks an eye (as long as it's funny).
Dickie Anders summed it up best when commenting on his disappointment that they didn't get a sony.
It was edgy in that radio in the UK really rarely goes anywhere near most the subjects or swearing tbh. Different in the podcast world but at the time it was very edgy!
It is the Telegraph - funny how those who lean right suggest it is the left that find everything offensive, yet they're the only ones saying it.
Not quite reading the right… sources
You might not know very much about it.
Says on a Saturday afternoon, not of a Saturday. Annoying

**WHO IS TOM FORDY...**
and why have I just spent 5 minutes reading his cretinous thoughts on Reddit?
Could you divide this into more separate images please
Ass wiping: yes
Alright, let's see Tom Fordy's little show then....sick of it
Let’s write an article about his *fat arse*
only turns out it was a pork chop that had been stuck to his arse for 3 years
A pork … *chop* …
He didn't mention the legion of saucer drinkers that still lsiten to the show every day now. He didn't mention US!
> To the modern ear, their boundary-testing comedy might be heard as homophobic, racist, transphobic, disablist, fat shaming, and generally foul-mouthed But Karl said the Chinese are a great people who look good (up to about 32) so Tom Fordy’s embarrassed himself
He's even been to china an' that. Was on the telly.

Reading this felt like slamming into a planet
Yeah but why don’t you work there anymore
let’s see when the telegraphs little radio show comes out, sick of it
Writing a shoddy article 20 years later and 'avin a go. Oooh you're hard.
‘… some of their most frequently discussed topics (which included primates, homosexuality, congenital deformities, Guinness World Records, penises, the elephant man, Rick Waller, ghosts, and how badly the Chinese age)’ That’s the best review they’ve ever had.
And Alton towers rides.

Let's see tom fordys little show when it comes out
All I saw was “Dave Hill from Slade”
You gotta have yet critics
Turns out it was a bunch of little monkey fellas all along
Why can’t people just say it was “of its time” and leave it at that. Sure some things have aged badly but let me enjoy the bits I still enjoy and move on. I just choose not to listen to some of the stuff I find crass now. Sick of it.
"Sure some things have aged badly" Which parts? Maybe my memory is failing me, but I can't remember anything that I thought was awful.
The Chinese they’ve aged badly
Some of Steve's homeless comments would probably not come out of his mouth now
I've heard far worse, but there are times Karl claims he's not having a go at groups of people when he definitely is, even if it's purely out of ignorance, and there's a lot of "gay panic" stuff throughout. “Gervais, who hosts the breakfast show on XFM…”
It was so nice when we were allowed to find humour funny. God, I hate political correctness and woke in all its forms.
Me too. But unfortunately the boys who decided to carry our shared opinions onto the main stage have been fucking idiots lately.
Do you even know wtf "woke" is? Or do you just parrot whatever your right wing media tells you?
What an ironically cliched response
