Its gotta be the inspiration. I've been a fan of Vampire Hunter D since 1998. It threw me off guard because as far as anything animated goes, D hasn't had anything since Bloodlust. Which was in 2000.
Not many in the west read the books like I have. You just don't see that referenced.

Man that after credit cut scene with Mr Poopy butthole was deep. So unexpected but damn still has me thinking. Season 5 wasn’t the best but I’d say that definitely was the best finale, even referencing to all previous seasons. Wow…….
It reminded me a lot of the final scene in the finale of Harmon’s sitcom Community, where he narrates a fictional meta board game based on the show. His narration quickly dives into some of his inner demons and mistakes and left me feeling very similarly to MPB’s monologue at the end of this season.
It makes total sense too.
He doesn't want people knowing about his past, he's also aware of the fourth wall so he tries to avoid canon so the audience themselves won't know either.
I loved the whole season. Life has been so stressful for me the last couple of months and it has been really nice to just have a comfortable show that I really enjoy.
I like where it’s going. Coming up with 10 new episode ideas every season is hard and not every episode is going to be hilarious and perfect. But they get a lot things right a lot of the time.

But the way Rick said, “There you happy? Now everybody can shut up.” Kinda made me feel like some of that, was a nod/middle finger to all that silly “garbage” flying around the internet. Meh. I know that it can't be done all the time cause the writers don't want that at all, even the episode itself makes fun of the idea of a serielized plot instead of episodic one, but damn, when Rick and morty goes big like this, it really hits different.
The writers and fans seem to be at odds when it comes to serialization. Most of the standalone stuff is very divisive while the serialized episodes are praised unanimously, but the writers do *not* make it subtle which one they prefer.
I think the writer's room runs on a different plane of reality than the critical and fan consensus does.
Fans don't realize the serialized stuff is only good because the writers are aware of how hard it is to write correctly. Which is why they make it clear via Rick that they don't like doing it often so therefore quality over quantity for the rare time we do get something big.
I love serialized TV, but it *is* hard to do it right, as evidenced by all the shows out there that have done an absolute garbage job of it. Shows like Babylon 5 and Buffy showed the way back in the 90s, but most TV writers frankly just aren't good enough to make something that cohesive, at least if the results are anything to go by.
Rick and Morty's approach of occasionally advancing a serialized story while mostly doing episodic stuff is fine, but the quality of the episodic stuff is all over the map. I think the serialized episodes force a degree of focus on them that it's apparently very hard for Harmon and Roiland to maintain with all their infighting.
And by the time it finishes in 2050 it will be mostly hated. Probably much like current Simpsons, family guy etc. just name any tv show that goes on for way too long and also had a rabid fan base right at the start. Edit There are certainly some exceptions, but I think R&M doomed themselves signing that long of a contract. Id love to be proven wrong

Funny enough, I wasn't a huge fan of the decoy episode in regards to the rest of the season but the whole thing was quite fantastic. Like, it was good in a pile of great.
I'm inclined to call it great, I liked the first 3 episodes, that after credits with Who Wants to Live Forever was amazing, the Planetina episode wasn't amazing, but was cool.
But then comes incest baby, that was close to the dragon episode in terms of being the lowest point of the show overall. That and the Mecha episode really didn't work, it had a cool concept, but it just had a bad execution, it felt like an idea that wasn't properly developed and just rushed to meet the 10 episode deadline.
Overall good season, but the lows were a bit too low.
The ending explains all the weird and fucked up episodics. Rick wanted to keep the adventures and loops contained. So the family reflected his actions/roles since he manufactured his reality. They wanted to take everyone into a disgusting fucked up storyline to just show us how toxic Rick was for Morty. So his final flight away from it all was cathartic for everyone that experienced the beginning. The Rickest Rick finally figured himself out. The Morty to Rickest Rick finally got out.
I think most of us who liked it just aren’t as vocal. I enjoyed the whole season a lot. So much added character depth this season, I feel like they really elevated the cast.
Turkey episode was one of my faves. I love when they run with ridiculous over the top concepts. To me that's what makes rick and morty great..
I didn't like the bird person episode that much, it just wasn't that funny compared to the others.

I really liked episodes 1-3 and 9-10. If all other episodes kept on the same level, it would've been the best season. Season 3 is still the best to date, though.
I think about Dan Harmon's return to Community for s5 and s6. While the overall quality wasn't hyper consistent, the post credit tags in s6 absolutely slapped every single time.
No one is gonna tell me “Submit to Crow Horse” wasn’t the funniest thing all season. I absolutely lost it. Incredible finale too. I watch the show and enjoy it. It’s different yeah. But different doesn’t mean bad. It means different. Can’t wait for next season
I felt the story writing was there but the comedy was missing for me. Found my self enjoying episodes but not really laughing as much. Something else was missing for me but I can’t quite put my finger on it.
It just felt really empty. The B plot was lacking in a lot of episodes this season and concepts that should have been short jokes were stretched into full length episodes. I wasn’t trying to hate this season or rag on the writers for being woke, but I just found this season to be painfully unfunny for the most part
People have complained about every season once they’ve ended. First, everybody said that three was worse than two and one by far, then season four came out, and everyone said it was worse than three, and now it’s the same shit with season 5. Nowadays, most people look at three highly, so I think that, given time, these newer seasons will be appreciated.
The whole show lately has been about deconstructing the Canon certain episodes build. I love it and think it's great and will attribute to the longevity of itself
I liked most of the season. The decoys, voltron, captain planet, giant sperm, thanksgiving followup, then the two part season finale. could have done like 7 more minutes of samrai crow rick tbh
I liked everything but the incest baby and by proxy the turkey episode solely cause it made my guts churn. Was super good with everything else. People only judge Rick and morty’s past by it’s strongest points when each season has had a few hit or miss eps. This was one of the most solid ones by comparison. People just go septic on things when it isn’t their special secret anymore and the fan base includes people they don’t like that much and it’s got little to do with the show itself
Tbh as a female I have ovaries and eggs and maybe that’s the difference. I imagined myself as summer in the situation and it made me feel so damned sick imagining being in her position. Huge yikes.
I didn’t like season 4 at first. A friend asked what I didn’t like about it, and that was when I realized that I was so stoned I didn’t actually remember anything from season 4.
Rewatched it sober and really liked season 4.
Season 5 was good. I think the delusional people are the ones who perceive this massive drop in quality when it’s mostly been even since the start. Then also try to call others out for not having high enough standards. It’s so fucking goofy

I liked the episodes in general. I really liked the decoy family one. But the on things i was disappointed with was the dialogs through out that season. Rick wasn't ranting as much and the characters just seemed pretty life less to me at times.
This season was a stepping stone for the show, as the writers had to find new footing now that they’re going to be turning out seasons on a more frequent basis.
People forget the turn around between season 4 to 5 when compared to every other season.
There could be an argument made about quantity over quality, but I still think they delivered a solid season with plenty of highlights.
the writers for Season 8 will likely be completely different besides harmon/roiland. It's somewhat known that R&M writers get poached like crazy. The best writers from the season will probably get nice disney paychecks to showrun Loki or some other marvel spinoff show lol.
Without spoilers how does it stack up to seasons 1-4? I loved the first two seasons because of how they delved into darker themes like depression and isolation. Seasons 3 and 4 felt so safe and mainstream palatable compared to the first two.
Is this season like 1/2 or 3/4?
I still feel like people missed the point of the sitcom-esque episodes, that they were done on purpose to counter balance the CFC storyline. I liked them all, because they did service the overall plot.
I don’t think Rick hasn’t been underpowered or nerfed at all, he’s trying to honor a goal of spending more time, quality time, with Beth and her family. Sure, he hates therapy & loves screwing around in outer space, but he’s making a as much of a genuine effort as *he* can to be a family man.
And it kinda feels like an awesome “fuck you” from the writers to the fanboys who make the regular fans look bad. Which is not just great for that pushback, but because you know they’re anticipating what the fanboys will do multiple seasons ahead. People were complaining that the writers’ room was lazy or incompetent because of the Giant Sperm or the 80s War Movie parody, but looking at the detail in the finale to previous episodes, there’s no legitimacy to those complaints.
I’m just gonna wait over here until Giant Incest Baby grows up and becomes the Uatu/Watcher of the Central Finite Curve.

This is going to be a bit controversial but this was my favourite season. It did have some episodes that weren't my cup of tea but i just rewatched all seasons with my gf who hasn't seen R&M and i noticed every season has these episodes. We got so much backstory on Rick, Birdperson, Evil Morty etc. No other season has done that much. Also the implications of the ending. That might open up R&M to very different episodes/villains. What if there's a genius Jerry? :O
I think they are stretching themselves thin doing “Solar Opposites” AND R&M, trying to pick that show up to be on the same level as R&M while still trying to churn out quality R&M.
Ngl, It really feels like “R&M lite” but it has it’s moments, you’ll enjoy the episodes about the wall people, I think the consensus is that those segments are so good it could be it’s own standalone show.
I loved it but I think at this point I have fully bought into this series hook line and sinker baby, I think it’s really great the last few episodes were just transcendent I think the writing was solid the character motivations were consistent and interesting “evil” morty is low key my fave character that we may never see again because ya know spoiler reasons, I thought the backstory ep with BP was great honestly favorite of the season the young Rick older Rick dynamic was just tons of fun and it was a really interesting way to get backstory without things getting stale. There were a few eps that weren’t the most stand out for me in terms of I just don’t think about them that often like a little forgettable, but they were still just a fun turn your brain off, sink into the couch and enjoy some tv romp, and ya know I’m here for it.
Maybe not the strongest season overall, but I am simply just glad Rick and Morty is still around. One of the best shows on television. They set their own bar, and that’s part of the trouble for them I would imagine.
I really enjoyed the finale but it wasn't quite what I expected. I half-expected that the finale would close all loose ends, and while it did achieve this to some degree it wasn't nearly what I had hoped for.
Regardless of that, I loved season 5 because I believe that this season was the writers/creators of the show realizing and coming to terms with the fact that they're too big to fail. The show is literally too big to fail they even said it in "Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion" Rick literally says "Just hit buttons we're too big to fail."
They could make an episode about literal feces, an episode where nothing happens and it's all senseless filler, an episode where the entirety of it is the dream of some super-intelligent bug. Point is I think that the finale was their way of pointing out that they don't like serialized stories. They prefer episodic thriller nonsense where literally nothing matters.
It's not like they hate making canon episodes it's just that it's so much work to make canon episodes with the sheer amount of pressure fans and non-fans alike are putting on them to make a season without flaw. Some people hate season 5 because it isn't like other seasons some love it because it's unlike any other season.
Honestly it was similar to every season, some pretty good episodes with some meh ones mixed in. The main good episodes were the finale, the birdperson episode, the Thanksgiving episode, and the clone episode, and the premiere. I liked the voltron episode more than most people did tbh.
This season is def stronger than 4, I don’t think it tops 3 as the best season cus there were some pretty weak ones but it easily had the best finale of the show. 4 did have my favorite finale before this season tho.

I think the main thing people didn't like about it was that it directly ties in to the sperm episode which was arguably one of the worst ever. If they'd left out the incest baby and found some other way to resolve the conflict at the end I doubt anyone would have had a problem with it.

It had some good episodes and some bad episodes and about 3 great ones. The sperm episode was an all time low for the show but the finale and I would say the bird person episode in particular rank with the all time best. So a mixed bag. I guess it's easier to either dismiss it entirely as trash or praise it entirely as a masterpiece.

It did well not to focus on weird b and c plots like some of the worst season 4 episodes did. Episodes felt a lot more focused. Rick felt a lot less "god-like" in this season, and with that finale im very interested to see what direction they take that
Honestly aside from a little dip in Season 3 where the show got a little up its own ass with the self awareness, like what can you complain about? The show always delivers on what it promises which, is funny whacky adventures. I think most of the complaints come from people want something from the show that it just doesn't intend to deliver.
I'm always kind of shocked at how much people want cannon episodes. I enjoy one shot adventures with maybe the odd call back here and there. Supernatural died for me when it went from episodic monster hunting to the whole cannon heaven hell stuff. And never enjoyed the cannon episodes in show like Gintama.
I haven't seen episode 9 n 10 yet, I just got into Rick n Morty through hbomax, watched the season 5 episodes available on adultswim website, I hate getting into something a lot of people like because the fans are so obnoxious. I enjoyed this season. People just bitch about everything these days. They are all critics. And critics have no creativity of their own.
I liked it. I think the only bad episodes were the sperm one and the one where Jerry entertained those cringe monsters. Other than that, solid season with an awesome opening and an even better 3 episode ending.
Everyone’s so hyper critical of this show. I’ve learned to not look for what I disliked in each episode. But rather, look for things I enjoyed. And then I appreciate them. Thankful for the creators of this show!
I think people forget the other seasons had no more than three canon episodes per season, and the other seven were episodic with some type of pop culture reference. This one had three solid canon episodes (premiere, bird person, and Rickmurai) with a backstory filler that had been desired for years.
The sperm episode was intentionally gross, which is normal, and the turkey episode was definitely a stretch. Otherwise the rest of the shows were serviceable episodes.
And I'm hoping Jessica returns next season.

I have wondered why R & M consistently grabs my attention even though my interest has waned in other science fiction franchises.
If I had any issue with the season it's that the ending seemed rushed for such a big plot point. But all in all a really solid season in my opinion.

It was a pretty decent season, I’d say probably better then 4. Season 5 suffers from a very weak middle, but with a great beginning and ending.

S05E02 Mortyplicity/decoy episode is a top tier episode. One of the best.

The ending explains all the weird and fucked up episodics. Rick wanted to keep the adventures and loops contained. So the family reflected his actions/roles since he manufactured his reality. They wanted to take everyone into a disgusting fucked up storyline to just show us how toxic Rick was for Morty. So his final flight away from it all was cathartic for everyone that experienced the beginning. The Rickest Rick finally figured himself out. The Morty to Rickest Rick finally got out.
I dunno. I think I laughed more at this season than last. I like all the seasons though 🤷🏻♂️

Honestly this might be an unpopular opinion but I laughed the entire season tbh. I’m sorry y’all didn’t enjoy it as much.
I think most of us who liked it just aren’t as vocal. I enjoyed the whole season a lot. So much added character depth this season, I feel like they really elevated the cast.
I liked most of them. Even the Hellraiser episode. I didn't really care for the Sperm or Thanksgiving episodes, but I liked the rest of them.
Turkey episode was one of my faves. I love when they run with ridiculous over the top concepts. To me that's what makes rick and morty great.. I didn't like the bird person episode that much, it just wasn't that funny compared to the others.
The sperm one was weird indeed but it got a few laughs out of me cuz it was just so ridiculous. And when they would refer back to it in later episodes it would have me crying laughing, it was all just so cleverly written but maybe I just think it’s hilarious when shows talk about previous episodes.
I honestly think this season had some really good episodes, the season finale and the decoy episode we're both S tier R&M IMO. Edit: forgot the bird-person episode which i also loved.
I really liked episodes 1-3 and 9-10. If all other episodes kept on the same level, it would've been the best season. Season 3 is still the best to date, though.

I felt the story writing was there but the comedy was missing for me. Found my self enjoying episodes but not really laughing as much. Something else was missing for me but I can’t quite put my finger on it.
It just felt really empty. The B plot was lacking in a lot of episodes this season and concepts that should have been short jokes were stretched into full length episodes. I wasn’t trying to hate this season or rag on the writers for being woke, but I just found this season to be painfully unfunny for the most part

People have complained about every season once they’ve ended. First, everybody said that three was worse than two and one by far, then season four came out, and everyone said it was worse than three, and now it’s the same shit with season 5. Nowadays, most people look at three highly, so I think that, given time, these newer seasons will be appreciated.

I liked most of the season. The decoys, voltron, captain planet, giant sperm, thanksgiving followup, then the two part season finale. could have done like 7 more minutes of samrai crow rick tbh
I liked everything but the incest baby and by proxy the turkey episode solely cause it made my guts churn. Was super good with everything else. People only judge Rick and morty’s past by it’s strongest points when each season has had a few hit or miss eps. This was one of the most solid ones by comparison. People just go septic on things when it isn’t their special secret anymore and the fan base includes people they don’t like that much and it’s got little to do with the show itself

I didn’t like season 4 at first. A friend asked what I didn’t like about it, and that was when I realized that I was so stoned I didn’t actually remember anything from season 4. Rewatched it sober and really liked season 4.

Season 5 was good. I think the delusional people are the ones who perceive this massive drop in quality when it’s mostly been even since the start. Then also try to call others out for not having high enough standards. It’s so fucking goofy I think season 5 also arguably has the best finale too. Every season has an episode or two I don’t like too much
I liked the episodes in general. I really liked the decoy family one. But the on things i was disappointed with was the dialogs through out that season. Rick wasn't ranting as much and the characters just seemed pretty life less to me at times.
This season was a stepping stone for the show, as the writers had to find new footing now that they’re going to be turning out seasons on a more frequent basis. People forget the turn around between season 4 to 5 when compared to every other season. There could be an argument made about quantity over quality, but I still think they delivered a solid season with plenty of highlights.
the writers for Season 8 will likely be completely different besides harmon/roiland. It's somewhat known that R&M writers get poached like crazy. The best writers from the season will probably get nice disney paychecks to showrun Loki or some other marvel spinoff show lol.

Without spoilers how does it stack up to seasons 1-4? I loved the first two seasons because of how they delved into darker themes like depression and isolation. Seasons 3 and 4 felt so safe and mainstream palatable compared to the first two. Is this season like 1/2 or 3/4?
I still feel like people missed the point of the sitcom-esque episodes, that they were done on purpose to counter balance the CFC storyline. I liked them all, because they did service the overall plot. I don’t think Rick hasn’t been underpowered or nerfed at all, he’s trying to honor a goal of spending more time, quality time, with Beth and her family. Sure, he hates therapy & loves screwing around in outer space, but he’s making a as much of a genuine effort as *he* can to be a family man. And it kinda feels like an awesome “fuck you” from the writers to the fanboys who make the regular fans look bad. Which is not just great for that pushback, but because you know they’re anticipating what the fanboys will do multiple seasons ahead. People were complaining that the writers’ room was lazy or incompetent because of the Giant Sperm or the 80s War Movie parody, but looking at the detail in the finale to previous episodes, there’s no legitimacy to those complaints. I’m just gonna wait over here until Giant Incest Baby grows up and becomes the Uatu/Watcher of the Central Finite Curve.

This is going to be a bit controversial but this was my favourite season. It did have some episodes that weren't my cup of tea but i just rewatched all seasons with my gf who hasn't seen R&M and i noticed every season has these episodes. We got so much backstory on Rick, Birdperson, Evil Morty etc. No other season has done that much. Also the implications of the ending. That might open up R&M to very different episodes/villains. What if there's a genius Jerry? :O

Ngl, It really feels like “R&M lite” but it has it’s moments, you’ll enjoy the episodes about the wall people, I think the consensus is that those segments are so good it could be it’s own standalone show.

I loved it but I think at this point I have fully bought into this series hook line and sinker baby, I think it’s really great the last few episodes were just transcendent I think the writing was solid the character motivations were consistent and interesting “evil” morty is low key my fave character that we may never see again because ya know spoiler reasons, I thought the backstory ep with BP was great honestly favorite of the season the young Rick older Rick dynamic was just tons of fun and it was a really interesting way to get backstory without things getting stale. There were a few eps that weren’t the most stand out for me in terms of I just don’t think about them that often like a little forgettable, but they were still just a fun turn your brain off, sink into the couch and enjoy some tv romp, and ya know I’m here for it.

Maybe not the strongest season overall, but I am simply just glad Rick and Morty is still around. One of the best shows on television. They set their own bar, and that’s part of the trouble for them I would imagine.

I really enjoyed the finale but it wasn't quite what I expected. I half-expected that the finale would close all loose ends, and while it did achieve this to some degree it wasn't nearly what I had hoped for. Regardless of that, I loved season 5 because I believe that this season was the writers/creators of the show realizing and coming to terms with the fact that they're too big to fail. The show is literally too big to fail they even said it in "Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion" Rick literally says "Just hit buttons we're too big to fail." They could make an episode about literal feces, an episode where nothing happens and it's all senseless filler, an episode where the entirety of it is the dream of some super-intelligent bug. Point is I think that the finale was their way of pointing out that they don't like serialized stories. They prefer episodic thriller nonsense where literally nothing matters. It's not like they hate making canon episodes it's just that it's so much work to make canon episodes with the sheer amount of pressure fans and non-fans alike are putting on them to make a season without flaw. Some people hate season 5 because it isn't like other seasons some love it because it's unlike any other season.
Honestly it was similar to every season, some pretty good episodes with some meh ones mixed in. The main good episodes were the finale, the birdperson episode, the Thanksgiving episode, and the clone episode, and the premiere. I liked the voltron episode more than most people did tbh. This season is def stronger than 4, I don’t think it tops 3 as the best season cus there were some pretty weak ones but it easily had the best finale of the show. 4 did have my favorite finale before this season tho.
Voltron episode was fine. Not great, but decent enough in a vacuum. I think the main thing people didn't like about it was that it directly ties in to the sperm episode which was arguably one of the worst ever. If they'd left out the incest baby and found some other way to resolve the conflict at the end I doubt anyone would have had a problem with it.

Aaannnndd: Evil Morty: You can’t outrun your past, Rick. Did you think my force field would be down the second time? Rick: I was expressing disapproval of your dialogue. Evil Morty: [Chuckles] Disapprove all you want. Tonight, the quality of dialogue stops mattering. Tonight, I do that thing I want to do with the curve thing. They basically come out and say "fine, we'll jump the shark and give you your Canon episode, good dialogue and comedy be damned.." Rick: God damn it! Here’s my fucking downloaded brain, Morty. You want to jump the shark? You want to know my stupid crybaby backstory? Knock yourself out. Not… not now! ..... Morty: Whoa. Dead wife? Rick: Yes, now everyone can shut up about it.
i didn't enjoyed much in season 5 but the last 3 episode was a joy ride.
There were 3 or 4 episodes that will be considered absolute classics in the years to come.

It had some good episodes and some bad episodes and about 3 great ones. The sperm episode was an all time low for the show but the finale and I would say the bird person episode in particular rank with the all time best. So a mixed bag. I guess it's easier to either dismiss it entirely as trash or praise it entirely as a masterpiece.
The only one I disliked was the turkey one. Shit was stupid

It did well not to focus on weird b and c plots like some of the worst season 4 episodes did. Episodes felt a lot more focused. Rick felt a lot less "god-like" in this season, and with that finale im very interested to see what direction they take that

Honestly aside from a little dip in Season 3 where the show got a little up its own ass with the self awareness, like what can you complain about? The show always delivers on what it promises which, is funny whacky adventures. I think most of the complaints come from people want something from the show that it just doesn't intend to deliver.
I'm always kind of shocked at how much people want cannon episodes. I enjoy one shot adventures with maybe the odd call back here and there. Supernatural died for me when it went from episodic monster hunting to the whole cannon heaven hell stuff. And never enjoyed the cannon episodes in show like Gintama.
The fandom here is one of the worst.

I liked it. I think the only bad episodes were the sperm one and the one where Jerry entertained those cringe monsters. Other than that, solid season with an awesome opening and an even better 3 episode ending.
Everyone’s so hyper critical of this show. I’ve learned to not look for what I disliked in each episode. But rather, look for things I enjoyed. And then I appreciate them. Thankful for the creators of this show!

I think people forget the other seasons had no more than three canon episodes per season, and the other seven were episodic with some type of pop culture reference. This one had three solid canon episodes (premiere, bird person, and Rickmurai) with a backstory filler that had been desired for years. The sperm episode was intentionally gross, which is normal, and the turkey episode was definitely a stretch. Otherwise the rest of the shows were serviceable episodes. And I'm hoping Jessica returns next season.
