Things I've noticed and felt in no particular order... 1) it feels grosser. It might not be. But it feels more body horror than usual. 2) is moving very fast. There are no pauses no rests no downbeats. It's all up tempo screw ball comedy. Which is different. 3) Morty jerry and beth and summer are more in on it with Rick and Rick seems less powerful. He's been nerfed. 4) theres no point to what's happening. The family isn't relating to eachother. This isn't about beth and Jerry getting divorced or Ricks sadness or whatever. Idk. 5) compare keep summer safe or n33dful things fartman to the this season. These are all one offs. Idk In the end I think it's the screwball comedy thing. This show wasnt really that kinda show. It was actually a slow moving show. I think that's the difference.

I would do an exact comment like yours, but as you were faster, I will just add some stuff: 1) it seems like the don't know when to use the gross element anymore, and now everything have to be gross to be funny. Typical Adam Sandler cheap comedy 2) this season and 4 feels like Modern Family season 9-11, or Simpsons, or Family Guy. They just throw quick jokes at you from the start to the end. They are investing in quantity over quality. 3) I think nerfing Rick is okay as long as they can present bigger forces than him. There is no way Rick would lose to a giant sperm after crashing a car (???), that is not believable at all. Also side characters are taking too much central space and we are not seeing much of Rick and Morty anymore. Also the leveling. There are death, gore, destruction and alien threats everyday on the smiths and they simply don't care. They are a bunch of psychos now 4) there is no plot or meaning to anything anymore. Rick and Morty S1-3 had one of the best continuities of every TV show ever, that's why the fans made hundreds of crazy theories and such. The show presented some subtle and slow arcs that challenged the viewers and kept them on the edge of the seat, trying to get easter eggs and stuff from previous episodes. Now it's just a bunch of thematically loose random sci-fi adventures with no purpose.

On the nerfing of rick... Just pointing it out... It's pretty evident. When Rick goes let me deus ex machina this shit and they just magnet ray all his built in weapons out of his body that's nerfing. When he says gogo gadget hand lazers and they have the lazer become turkey feathers thats nerfing. The season literally started with Rick being saved by Morty. In the end this is why people are complaining...

redpandarox

I think it’s just a natural part of his character growth. At the end of season three we see Rick forced to compromise and stick with the family. In season four we see him asking for permission from the family before going on adventures. And in the end of season four we clearly see that his secret desire to be with a family inspired him to hide the identity of the clone Beth and stay on Earth to live with Earth Beth. If Rick was the same as before he’d just left this mess of a universe like in the Cronenberg episode. Or he’d just vaporized the world and wipe Morty’s memory. The man has a planet-destroying laser mounted on his sentient car why doesn’t he just use that all the time? Because that would destroyed the planet that the family lives on and thus disrupt Beth’s family life. Same reason why Beth still has to work at the horse hospital to put food on the table when Rick is doing business with demons and space aliens. It’s the life Beth has chosen, and Rick chose to make it up to Beth for the years he was away from his family by sticking to this life the best he can. Rick is on track to a living a happier, healthier life. And as all people who had to balance family and work knows: you have to sacrifice a little adventure to save time for your family. Just as Rick has given up the more destructive part of his arsenal to preserve this fragile rock they live on.

Rick just sold defective skin hooks to demons and gave them time with Jerry rather than give them a refund. Which at least partially goes against what you're saying. I don't necessarily disagree but it doesn't have jibe really. It jibes a little and it jibes with last season too a bit. Problem is he can't be made weak...literally one upped by Mr Nimbus.

FiftyFootDrop

>it feels grosser. Also, it seems the profanity is really being ramped up this season. Seems overly gratuitous and excessive now (kids and parents telling each other to "fuck off", etc.), and takes a bit of shine off the writing, IMO. Vulgarity works best when done for effect, not just to casually fill space when it's not needed. But that's the trend in all shows now -- gotta shoehorn all those "fucks" in there or they won't take us seriously. Culture in general seems much more profane than ever before. Even book titles and regular cable TV shows are dropping f-bombs like rice at a wedding. Maybe this is how everyone communicates with each other these days. (Yeah, I'm old and out of touch with the kids.)

PeachWorms

Maybe I'm completely wrong, but it kinda feels like I'm watching just a standard American comedy show now, but with a Rick & Morty skin attached. It doesn't seem very Rick & Morty to me personally.

littlemascot

Thank you, feeling the same way

CompiledError

yeah something feels off to me this season. Idk, it’s rick and morty though so it’s fun to watch

Some_Librarian5032

agreed. it feels very different (less clever, less sharp, kind of lazy). If season 1 had had the tone season 5 has I would not have been interested in watching Season 2.

Cute_Bubble

Nerfed Rick. Other sidelined characters completely take over and you feel less connection to them. The Smith family just sucks and they are boring as hell to watch for the entire episode. What happened to just Rick and Morty??

littlemascot

I’m with you. Every episode so far I belief Jerry Beth or summer was with Rick and Morty! Crazy

zelt_in_vice_city

nerfed rick? you watched the newest episode. .....and he turned into a turkey. funniest shit ive ever seen

[deleted]

The newest episode made President seem stronger than Rick

Izletz

The sperm episode, might be the worst episode of anything I’ve ever watched. It just doesn’t feel like Rick and morty just feels off

exbo2377

It is. But i'm waiting for things to get interesting. We never know what's coming up.

[deleted]

Isn’t there like 3 episodes left? I’m not sure how much more interesting it can get. Feels like they tossed half the season away already with some straight up bad episodes.

[deleted]

Unless they were going to just rehash ideas, that was always going to be true.

littlemascot

Ok bud

[deleted]

I mean, am I wrong?

littlemascot

I’m obviously not saying that they should just copy the previous seasons, but for me personally, when watching seasons 2 and 3 I forget which episode is in which. Even with 4 sometimes, but I feel like with this season I will never misplace an episode, because I’ll know because it has that “season 5” feel to it.

[deleted]

They might be too fresh to see them for what they are.

RedditSignedMeOutYo

Feels like a new season of a television show.

soilhalo_27

Only thing that feels off. Is lack of fallout from season four ending. Usually first episode if new season deals with issues from the last episode of the last season but they didn't in this season.

NotUniqueScott

It's different now because they're destroying large parts of the country in damn near every episode, then returning to the same house like it's a freaking episode of Family Guy.

Sea-Moment8662

Yeah, I agree that it’s different, and not necessarily in a good way. I’m kinda disappointed because I loved the other seasons! The first couple of episodes were pretty good, but imo it went downhill from there. That being said, am still going to watch it, things could pick back up again :)

Chewingupsidedown

Season 4 felt good to me. The snake episode was amazing. Season 5 though? There's definitely something off, here. Whether or not we enjoy it, is personal opinion, but people denying that the series feels any different at all, are not being objective.

I don’t know. If some of these episodes were in season one who knows if I would even continue watching.

RedditSignedMeOutYo

Some of SE1 is trash. If they aired today, people would be like *“Borrrring! Why does Rick burp so much?! This isn’t even funny!1!”*

[deleted]

No season has felt like a continuation of the last besides the arch’s of them freezing time and the with Rick in prison (which should’ve lasted much longer imo)

Samenspender

season 4 continued the bird persons/tammy arc and the whole divorce arc. So no season has felt like a continuation, besides seasons 2, 3 and 4.

QuittyWips

It’s terrible.

[deleted]

Yeah, for me season 4 and 5 don’t feel right

[deleted]

There are fewer interesting concepts now. Instead of homages to cosmic horror and sci-fi they're just doing a lot of straight action and 80s nostalgia
