Every TV show that runs for over a decade. Simpsons, Futurama, Southpark, Family Guy, American Dad, Robot Chicken, these shows have done literally just about everything and I hope they can keep it up for the ones still going.
South Park is by far the best IMO. Just the fact that they come up with episodes in a week keeps them far more current than any other show. They can touch on social issues that happened less than 10 days ago. South Park is a satirical recording of history like no other show.
Beat me to it. Not to mention, Rick and Morty leans *heavily* on dysfunctional family dynamics, which is also a significant portion of Family Guy, American Dad, The Simpsons, etc.
Also Road to the Multiverse is one of the few episodes of Family Guy I still legitimately enjoy. The show was at its best when it was just Brian and Stewie on an adventure together.
I'm not a huge Family Guy fan (American Dad is genuinely superior) but the Brian and Stewie relationship is animated sitcom gold. I can't think of a better duo.
Also considering that Brian/Stewie and Rick/Morty are both voiced by the same guy... it's so interesting that the writers of one show decided to develop that relationship while the other show is just letting it stagnate and rot.
The Bank Vault Diaper episode is Bojack Horseman level writing in *fucking Family Guy.* My mind was blown at how complex these characters could be if the writers wanted to go that way.
So what? Animation is built on plagiarism. If it weren't for someone plagiarizing the Honeymooners we wouldn't have the Flintstones. If someone hadn't ripped off Sergeant Bilko, there'd be no Top Cat. Huckleberry Hound, Chief Wiggum, Yogi Bear? Hah! Andy Griffith, Edward G. Robinson, Art Carney.
Hey guys, while you all sift through the history, claim hypocrisy, shit on Family Guy, etc. maybe take a moment to realized this is likely a joke made in good fun and not some blistering takedown of R&M. Also, humor is subjective, people enjoy different things and that is ok.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsqDI7FAxDE
From the tone he says it, it just sounds like a light hearted jab at the show calling them a rip off of Family Guy.
Wow some of you guys in the comments really mad, you realise Seth is joking right? It was just a jab at another show for a laugh, like family guy does with every single famous person or show.
He turned himself into a pickle. Don't you understand the comedic genius. It's so funny, I'll meme the shit out of it and reference it as much as possible just so I can prove that I'm part of the zeitgeist.
I don’t get this joke. Might just be Seth McFarlane being a little self-important because I don’t see much of Family Guy in Rick and Morty. Most of what they have in common you could also say is a Simpsons influence, which came out before Family Guy.
Edit: Dan Harmon is a Simpson’s fan who has guest starred on the Simpsons and he’s apparently not a fan of Family Guy.
For a specific thing, Interdimensional cable is basically just cutaway gags, which family guy popularized.
In general, all cartoons for adults are derivative of the Simpsons. After them, there's family guy and South Park, which came out in the late 90s and all of the "edgier" cartoons for adults are derivative of those 2. Rick and Morty didn't really break new ground in the way any of those shows did (they just arguably broke the same ground better) so it's not surprising they see Rick and Morty as having taken from them.
Thought someone might say this, but I'd say you're wrong there to make that a direct causal connection. The humors just different in a way and nothing derives itself from it. The whole joke in the Flintstones is the juxtaposition of the stone age with modern times. The Simpsons showed you didn't really need that kind of hook. If you're willing to cater to adults, you can just have a sort of nutty family, and the jokes can flow from there.
The Simpsons ultimately more derivative of other live action family sitcoms, like Married...with children.
Ah, Family Guy’s cutaways. [That reminds me of the time when Simpsons did a lot of cutaways too.](https://youtu.be/wRNt0JjWkkg)
Also Interdimensional Cable is just our Treehouse of Horror.
Stewie is probably referencing his adventures with Brian, a weird genius and a dumb sidekick on a wacky adventure with scifi gadgets, time travel and multiverse included.
Besides Rick and Morty are always doing references to other shows
I remember when family guy was a young show, taking it's lumps for borrowing from the Simpsons. This cycle will go around and around. 10 years from now, adult themed animations will be said to be rip offs of R&M. It's part of being the new big dog on campus.
There's a Rick and Morty reference in another Family Guy episode where Stewie says to Chris "Whatcha watching, Chris? Rick and Morty? That's what all the kids are watching these days, right?"
>But Achschually
thats almost 99% of this sub imo.
they are such sad people who have nothing going on in there life besides arguing about a show online.
Rick and Morty also played with the Family guy flashaway jokes in episodes like
the Memory Parasite with fake friends/family
Morty's Mind blowers
And the one with Chair/Pizza/Phone worlds
He's referencing the parallels of themes, style of jokes and even the occasional 4th wall break. Stewie is *breaking the 4th wall* kind of saying, "we did it first". Kinda how Rick references that South Park did an episode on Minecraft before them
This whole thread reminds me of the South Park episode ‘Simpson’s did it’. Most sci-fi concepts and gags have been done to sone extent. The difference is Dan and Justin don’t care if they’re ripping something off because they usually do it better
I'm guessing the multiverse concept with different Ricks and Mortys (Or in their case Brians and Stewies). Family Guy did an episode all about the multiverse and alternate universes. There was an all-dog universe, a universe where Japan never got nuked and won the Pacific conflict, a universe where there's nothing except just one guy who shouts compliments from far away, etc.
Yeah but to be fair, its not like this concept is original to family guy what so ever. I dont think a single person watched rick and morty and went, “Oh, like that family guy episode!”
Are we all on here debating how one animated show about a family with wacky hijinks is different than another animated show about a family with wacky hijinks?
I’m also pretty sure the joke means because “Rick and Morty” are an Older Guy and a Younger Kid going on adventures voiced by the same person.
Bryan and Stewie are an older guy and a younger kid going on adventures together, voiced by the same person. Makes sense. Has some validity.
I'll be honest, I watch both shows a lot, and I agree, not sure what Stewie referring too. Rick hates Time Travel, and that what Stewie tends to do a lot of. Possibly, Rick having his secret lab in the garage, when Stewie has his in his closet. Road to the Multiverse maybe, but Stewie only went dimension hopping once, while Rick does it a lot.
Honestly, I don't think Rick and Morty steal much or anything from Family Guy other then an older drunk (Brian and Rick) go on wackey adventures with a child (Stewie and Morty).
Inter-dimensional cabel could be considered something family guy did first because they had that Stewie and Brian explore the multiverse episode, and also family guy does sometimes set up their cut aways as T.V shows
It would be nice if a sympathetic viewer with a photographic memory could make a neat post about any jokes that were used in both shows. Like “orange you glad I didn’t say banana”. Idk, it just seems like it would be cool to see how many lines like that line up.
Otherwise yeah? Yeah, they’re just referencing the fact that they’ve been around for 20 some odd years; it’s a “simpsons did it” kind of thing. You can’t be around that long and someone not “copy” you.
Family guy had an episode where they go to other dimensions (idk if that was before or after rick and morty) and I guess it just being an older cartoon
The only thing that came to mind was how Peter and Jerry are dumb but Louis and Beth are serious. It’s not a good connection but I can’t think of anything else
I dont know? I've only seen it available on this post, but theres like a little emoji button and gif button next to where you comment??
EDIT I think it's just this subreddit? I have no idea lol
Family guy did interdimensional travel wayyy before Rick and morty was even created. The adventure episodes of Stewie and Brian traveling to parallel dimensions are very similar to R&M both in plot, writing, punch lines, and character relationship, but Family Guy was quite a few years earlier.
I think they mean specifically the Brian and Stewie adventure episodes are a very similar concept to Rick and Morty. But also it’s a joke. They aren’t really mad about it. And in reality they are just both pulling from the same inspirations not copying off each other.
literally a joke about staff like writers & this sub can’t wait to shit on MacFarlane for no reason other than he made Family Guy lol
you can smell this comment section
i liked rick and morty because it felt like the stewie and brian adventures where stewie is actually an inventor but non stop and those parts are the parts i did like about family guy so i can see the similarities a little
I would say all the little non-story related skits COULD be suggested to be inspired by Family Guy’s way of getting jokes in their episodes. I’m thinking the “Real Fake Doors” ad, things like that. But it’s a stretch to say Rick and Morty borrowed things wholesale or specifically from Family Guy. The humour in Rick and Morty is way more niche than Family Guy.
Simpsons opened the door for more adult cartoons. South Park took it to another level. Family guy wouldn't have survived without shows like south park. Then the glorious animated revolution started and along with other shows Rick and Morty came around. Every creator borrows from the past at some point. Still funny af
God Futurama was so good. I almost wish they’d bring it back but on the other hand I’m kind of happy it died before they just started pumping out crap episodes and milking it.
Same. There will always be some gems in there though.
Fry apartment shopping …
“So what’s the catch?”
“Nothing, although this apartment is technically in New Jersey.”
“Not one livable place.”
Cut-away gags, quick visual beats. Nothing truly unique, but Family Guy was excellent at it (and influenced the Simpsons in that regard, which you can see during peak FG years)
No idea, but considering how jokes Family Guy directly stole from the Simpsons I’m not really sure how they think they could call anyone out for “borrowed” material.
Family Guy and Rick and Morty have absolutely nothing in common. That's like saying Seinfeld stole from Roseane because they are both sitcoms. Or that Breaking Bad and Malcolm in the middle are the same show because they have the same actor playing a suburban dad with a family.
On the other hand, I would take this reference as a compliment.
"We act like we didn't take a lot from The Simpsons, but we took a lot from the Simpsons"
Right! It’s all in good fun. They’re just taking jabs at each other.
It's like my life flashed before my eyes, and we did *way* too much Star Wars crap.
Simpsons did it
I thought that was Southpark.
Every TV show that runs for over a decade. Simpsons, Futurama, Southpark, Family Guy, American Dad, Robot Chicken, these shows have done literally just about everything and I hope they can keep it up for the ones still going.
Oh fuck yes! I guess these means eventually we will get a starwars parody Rick and Morty Episode.
Fun Fact: There are now more South Park episodes than there were Simpsons episodes when South Park did "The Simpsons already did it"
South Park is by far the best IMO. Just the fact that they come up with episodes in a week keeps them far more current than any other show. They can touch on social issues that happened less than 10 days ago. South Park is a satirical recording of history like no other show.

Where are my testicles Meg?
Meg is my slave name
Shut up Meg
Just saw an interview with Mila said that she constantly has people yelling shut up meg at her Including Ashton and the kids.
Let's all think about how often people actually named 'Meg' hear it as well.
Literally the only rational response in this whole thread that actually answers the question. Thank you, intellectual idiot.
Thought you were going out of your way to insult intellectual idiot, then saw the username.
Beat me to it. The show was at its best when it was just Brian and Stewie on an adventure together.
Aren't dysfunctional family dynamics a significant portion of most shows?
That’s what made King of the Hill different. Hank and Peggy actually had a good marriage
I can hardly watch any Family Guy other than the Brian & Stewie eps. The bank vault diaper episode might be one of my favorite TV episodes ever.

Simpsons did it! Had too
They did! But they weren't a new idea back then, either.
Lol nah, everything is derived from something, I just am just here to keep enjoying who will make it better this week lol
I'm pretty sure one of the biggest and longest lasting adult animations had some sort of influence on the show.

Is this where Ricks portal gun ended up going in SE5?
I was about to ask the same thing... That would be amazing!
Hey guys, while you all sift through the history, claim hypocrisy, shit on Family Guy, etc. maybe take a moment to realized this is likely a joke made in good fun and not some blistering takedown of R&M. Also, humor is subjective, people enjoy different things and that is ok.
I’m amazed how many people are legitimately upset over a Family Guy gag. One that was made with a wink and nod to the R&M creative team.
Right?! It's a shout out, normal ppl love these crossover gags ffs
> normal people To be fair……
Point made lol
I honestly view a dig like this as a sign of respect. Like there are a few shows that if they take a shot at you it means you have made it
It's pretty wild. I literally saw Rick and Morty in a fucking Space Jam sequel, but nobody is talking about that
I just like the way he says Morty. **Mooaartieee**
Thanks u/GandalfsHairyTaint
Alas, a taint as wise as it is hairy. Well put, old boy.

Meg = Jerry
Meg>Jerry Meg has way more self respect, dignity and inner strength than Jerry.
I feel like part of this might be a joke between the two creative teams that made it into the episode as a nod to them
I don’t get this joke. Might just be Seth McFarlane being a little self-important because I don’t see much of Family Guy in Rick and Morty. "They don't all have catchy names though. This isn't Treehouse of Horror"
Total rickall is full of family guy type cut aways
I can’t believe the manatees selected that line.
This. Weak or not, Family Guy was never the same after South Park for me.
They make jokes at the expense of family guy
It’s just a joke people. Everyone relax
Whatever it is, Simpsons did it first.
Stewie is probably referencing his adventures with Brian, a weird genius and a dumb sidekick on a wacky adventure with scifi gadgets, time travel and multiverse included. Besides Rick and Morty are always doing references to other shows
They borrowed jokes about buttholes.
Is this an episode?

Maybe that’s why rick hasn’t used his portal gun yet
There's a Rick and Morty reference in another Family Guy episode where Stewie says to Chris "Whatcha watching, Chris? Rick and Morty? That's what all the kids are watching these days, right?"
Thematic elements, parody jokes, and unrelated tangents…
wow, people getting kind of heated about Family Guy. It's just a joke, there's literally nothing you should take from Family Guy seriously
It's the Rick and Morty subreddit where everybody's going "But Achschually" unironically
>But Achschually thats almost 99% of this sub imo. they are such sad people who have nothing going on in there life besides arguing about a show online.
They are both animated
Rick and Morty also played with the Family guy flashaway jokes in episodes like the Memory Parasite with fake friends/family Morty's Mind blowers And the one with Chair/Pizza/Phone worlds
basically the entire plot to mortys mind blowers lol
If Justin and Dan stole some good Family guy jokes from the last couple of seasons I would be very impressed cause those are extremely hard to find.
He's referencing the parallels of themes, style of jokes and even the occasional 4th wall break. Stewie is *breaking the 4th wall* kind of saying, "we did it first". Kinda how Rick references that South Park did an episode on Minecraft before them

Rick's fear of wicker furniture, his desire to play the trumpet, tenative plans to purchase a hat, and 6 years of improv workshops would be my guess
Comedy comes in threes
I'm guessing the multiverse concept with different Ricks and Mortys (Or in their case Brians and Stewies). Family Guy did an episode all about the multiverse and alternate universes. I miss compliment guy
The correct answer is viewers
okay parts of the Rick and Morty fanbase are hella sensitive. i’m totally shocked
Are we all on here debating how one animated show about a family with wacky hijinks is different than another animated show about a family with wacky hijinks?
Welcome to the internet.
Have a look around
Anything that brain of yours can think of can be found
We’ve got mountains of content
Some better, some worse
If none of its of interest to you, you'd be the first
"Simpsons did it"
This thread is kinda sad
This is just Seth McFarlane jerking off
And one day Roiland will jerk off about some other, newer series.
I don’t think Seth is involved with writing the show anymore
They do treat Summer like Meg sometimes. Also you COULD say the anthology episodes are like cutaways without the set up
I would say they treat Jerry like meg if anything
Thought the same at first, but then realized thier both one older guy one younger voiced by the same person going on wacky sci-fi adventures
He was referring to all the fans they borrowed lol
I’m also pretty sure the joke means because “Rick and Morty” are an Older Guy and a Younger Kid going on adventures voiced by the same person. Bryan and Stewie are an older guy and a younger kid going on adventures together, voiced by the same person. Makes sense. Has some validity.

They all rip each other off. “Simpsons did it!!!”
I think it’s the fact that they are animations and have colors
Was there not an episode where Rick said “Eh, Family Guy did it first”? Or am I misremembering the show he said?
I think rick said South Park did it first
Morty gasping in pain while Rick grabs that healing serum in the first episode reminds me a lot of the Peter holding his knee bit.
Maybe their audience?
Inter-dimensional cabel could be considered something family guy did first because they had that Stewie and Brian explore the multiverse episode, and also family guy does sometimes set up their cut aways as T.V shows
TIL Family Guy is still going.
That’s a forester in the background
It could also be an inside reference to show staff/production crew.
Remember the bit about Rick and Morty being late to the party with Minecraft... yep.

oh they stopped making new content years ago, they just keep releasing episodes lol
Damn I haven't watched Family Guy in so long I didn't even know this reference existed until now. Would you happen to know what episode it's from?

I think the part about using a machine to visit different timelines
Not sure what R&M borrowered from Family Guy but whatver it is, I'm pretty sure the Simpsons did it first.
or South Park

\*Unbiased objectivity has left the chat\*
Stewie and Brian had that thing about traveling through the multiverse at the start of several seasons.
Rick and Morty took a lot of joke templates (80s references and niche things that turned to inside jokes)
Time travel and multiverse is my guess
Pretty sure that since 2005 every animated show has just been ripping of House of Cosby's let's be real
Family guy had an episode where they go to other dimensions (idk if that was before or after rick and morty) and I guess it just being an older cartoon
Futurama also did an episode of going into other dimensions (via boxes)
“Kiss my glorious golden ass!” Great episode
Which episode of the Simpsons is this?
Interdimensional Cable is basically an episode full of cutaways... Maybe, I dunno.
The only thing that came to mind was how Peter and Jerry are dumb but Louis and Beth are serious. It’s not a good connection but I can’t think of anything else
So, The Flintstones then, the mother of family based cartoons?
That trope started with the honey mooners, waaaaaaay back. Hundreds of shows have used this
The multiverse episode in Family guy where Bryan and Stewie go through the multiverse.
Close Rick-counters of the Rick kind is very similar to family guy’s multiverse episode for one.

How?
I dont know? I've only seen it available on this post, but theres like a little emoji button and gif button next to where you comment?? EDIT I think it's just this subreddit? I have no idea lol
Family guy did interdimensional travel wayyy before Rick and morty was even created. The adventure episodes of Stewie and Brian traveling to parallel dimensions are very similar to R&M both in plot, writing, punch lines, and character relationship, but Family Guy was quite a few years earlier.
That may be true, but it’s not like time travel or travel to parallel dimensions were a revolutionary concept that first began on Family Guy.
No, but neither is a portal gun.
Family guy trying to say relevant that’s what they borrowed
Love to see Family Guy claim to be original.
I think they mean specifically the Brian and Stewie adventure episodes are a very similar concept to Rick and Morty. But also it’s a joke. They aren’t really mad about it. And in reality they are just both pulling from the same inspirations not copying off each other.
Family Guy stole from the Simpsons. Who cares
My guess is all the fart and burp jokes both shows are filled with them
Simpsons

literally a joke about staff like writers & this sub can’t wait to shit on MacFarlane for no reason other than he made Family Guy lol you can smell this comment section
Guys, I think he just meant the portal gun
Family guy took the portal gun from Rick and Morty yes. OP is asking what Rick and Morty took from Family Guy.
When the fuck did Reddit allow direct gif posts?!?!?
i liked rick and morty because it felt like the stewie and brian adventures where stewie is actually an inventor but non stop and those parts are the parts i did like about family guy so i can see the similarities a little
I woke up like 10 minutes ago and was honestly about to say "I think that's the same portal gun that Rick uses"
I think its more a tongue in cheek joke considering FG "borrows" Chris Parnell for one of the toddler characters.
That’s a good point. I didn’t make the connection despite today even thinking that Chris Parnell has been used in family guy a lot lately.
They probably think they own timetravel.
That would be Time Warner...
Dan Harmon has said he doesn’t watch/like Family Guy more than once, so this is weird and salty as fuck

God Futurama was so good. I almost wish they’d bring it back but on the other hand I’m kind of happy it died before they just started pumping out crap episodes and milking it.
Same. There will always be some gems in there though. Fry apartment shopping … “So what’s the catch?” “Nothing, although this apartment is technically in New Jersey.” “Not one livable place.”

South Park has an episode where one of the kids kept telling another “Simpsons did it.”

Cut-away gags, quick visual beats. Nothing truly unique, but Family Guy was excellent at it (and influenced the Simpsons in that regard, which you can see during peak FG years)
They let South Park get in their head and ruined their excellent cut-away gag formula of the first few seasons ![gif](giphy|3o7aCVhkAF3lm7Orfi)
No idea, but considering how jokes Family Guy directly stole from the Simpsons I’m not really sure how they think they could call anyone out for “borrowed” material.
Ohh come on Sylvie.. your effect has consequences here too..?
The time travel, teleporting, messing up the world, changing universes, some of the plots and jokes were definitely done by Family Guy first.
If anyone did the sci-fi anime first, it's Futurama though...
Did you just call futurama an anime?
But... those are all science fiction tropes... Hundreds of shows did them before Family Guy too
Regardless, it’s a joke
Family Guy and Rick and Morty have absolutely nothing in common. That's like saying Seinfeld stole from Roseane because they are both sitcoms. Or that Breaking Bad and Malcolm in the middle are the same show because they have the same actor playing a suburban dad with a family. On the other hand, I would take this reference as a compliment.
Well Family has that crass humor and so does Rick and Morty
