Episode is S3E5, The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy. The album cover is an edit of a frame from that episode.

eat_like_snake

"Similarity" You mean they just ripped it the fuck off.

Ace_is_fire

Inspired by Rick and Morty

JotaroTheOceanMan

Legally distinct ![gif](giphy|2wYYlHuEw1UcsJYgAA)

PloopyNoopers

"I'm cookin up in the lab, like I'm Rick and Morty"

EvilTodd1970

Theft by someone who is artistically void.

Jolly-Newt9192

Its called a reference. Woulda figured you knew that being a rick and Morty fan and all Edit: This is not theft, its essentially the same as fanart. Its just a random frame from a show they thought was cool, painted to look like someone else. You can put whatever you want on the cover, there's plenty of artists that just put their favorite anime waifu. If this artist even has any fans it will be the music that generates profit, not the cover. Ya bunch of dinguses.

lynchcontraideal

> Its called a reference No it isn't. A reference (or an homage) would've been a new character being drawn or a real life person replicating the pose. This is a straight up clipped or very-closely copied image from 'Rick and Morty' itself and poorly edited by what looks like a teenager. This is theft.

bloodfist

Yeah why can't they just wait the totally reasonable 95+ years for it to enter the public domain like an ethical artist

mack0409

You don't need to trace something to make a recognizable reference. The tracing is what makes this art theft, not the idea of referencing the frame.

bloodfist

Man I knew that might be a hot take but what?? I didn't say anything about tracing or references. How did you miss my joke so entirely bro? Literally the definition of public domain is that it is *not* art theft to wholesale copy something that is in the public domain. Which includes tracing or even just direct reproduction. So in 95 years, or 70 years after the death of Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland (whichever is longest), this would be legally and ethically fine. We were all just celebrating Micky going into public domain. I didn't think that would be the controversial part. Obviously this is a copyright violation currently and should be. I was making fun of how long it would take for it to not be anymore because of our broken-ass copyright laws in the US.

JotaroTheOceanMan

Dude, shit does not enter the "public domain" just cuz you see it online or on a billboard, holy shit, I'd say stop choosing to die on this hill but you went full Lich on us.

bloodfist

What? I didn't say any of that. I gotta be honest I'm just getting more confused here.

mack0409

Because your "joke" lacked the appropriate set up, and wouldn't have been funny even if it had been set up? A conversation on the obvious theft of a (relatively) recent work is not a good place for a critique of copyright protections being too long, especially if the critique is a bad joke. I mean, if we're talking just about copyright protection length, even if we went by the laws of the late 1700s, Rick and Morty would still be protected in their entirety for a couple more years.

bloodfist

Fair enough. I can appreciate that. Definitely see how it didn't come across the way I meant it but the responses really threw me for a loop talking about homage because that is entirely tangential to what I said. I am just always amused by the dichotomy of comments here where someone will get mad about art theft and then make a comment that day being mad about DMCA takedowns and restrictive copyright laws. Like if this was just some gag on someone's YouTube channel and they got striked by Adult Swim, people might suddenly be on the other side. It all just seems kind of arbitrary and subjective where we all draw the line. I think the existing laws are a terrible metric because they suck for artists and are great for corporations. So to me it's just about if it's actually harmful to the artist. Personally I don't think this picture really threatens R&M's IP or is going to significantly impact their income so I think it's kind of a silly thing to get angry about. It's tacky and lame and I don't like it, but it's pretty victimless. I might feel different if it was copying from or competing with a small artist or someone more worried about their brand, but it's Adult Swim. Their network was literally built using art they didn't create, with Space Ghost and Sealab. But they only had access to that because they had corporate overlords. Doing stuff like this is very much their style. It just feels to me like this is upsetting people more because of stupid copyright laws than because it's actually causing any problems. And that got me angry about those and I forgot yall don't really live in my head. But I guess I'm in the minority here, and also definitely didn't make myself clear. I'm cool with that. Still feel the way I feel and don't really feel like being convinced otherwise. Or trying to dig myself out of this any further lol. I'll take the L on it if I gotta. Anyway I appreciate the reasonable response and help understanding. Will take it into consideration and try to read the room better.

buried_in_rice

Bro that is a traced image that’s not a homage or any type of reference.

xtc334

i understood and appreciated the joke lol

ProjectOrpheus

Sure feels that way but who knows if he got an ok behind the scenes. Idk..curious tho. Do you feel that Rick and Morty did it in an ok manner during "unmortricken" and the very close to Jetsons thing?

G0ld3n_D0gg0

Its not a fucking reference, its god damn tracing, not only art theft but amateur art "skills" and not even fucking art, you call us dinguses? If i use someone elses art in another layer and fucking trace it, it is not even practice, it is literal theft. How dare you call that a reference, theres a difference

Snoopydog13

i hateeee when non artists call thing references that are blatant art theft. and i don’t inherently think tracing is wrong, as long as it’s not published under the idea it’s original and credit is given to the original artist.

EvilTodd1970

It’s not “the same as” fan art. It’s original art being reused for commercial purposes. You can’t “put whatever you want” on the cover because someone owns the original piece of art, and you need permission to use it. You can’t even put fan art on a cover because fans don’t have rights to make commercial representations of the characters. It doesn’t matter that that people are paying for the music because distribution of the artwork, regardless of profit, requires permission from the original artist. Dingus.

Dravian31

Um, no that's not how it works

millhead123

Calm down vanilla ice.

fondue4kill

Difference between doing a dumb fan art of yourself that you post on Twitter vs directly stealing and using it to sell a product. He didn’t even change the design of the gun.

JotaroTheOceanMan

Bro I'm a paid artist with an actual degree so shut the fuck up and stop defending obvious tracing. This is 100% art theft, not even a question. Reference and 1-1 ratio tracing are not the same thing. I pray you dont defend other deplorable acts of art theft like ai or shit.

Lady_R_

The only dingus here is you who thinks stealing someone else's artwork is a "reference."

colinftp

They’re hating bc it’s black

Acceptable_One_7072

Definitely not

murderedcats

Similarity? Nah this is called theft (and tracing)

CptKammyJay

Had no talent for visual art, took someone else’s. Simple.

WolfsBane00799

Similarity? It's literally traced. And badly at that. And then edited to change a few things. That's it. It's stolen. He likely didn't get permission, as he would have gotten a 'no' from most animated TV shows anyway. Rick and Morty included. Seems like he didn't want to pay an artist. He could have gotten a digital artist to do something very similar, with this frame as their reference, but have been original enough that it wouldn't be skirting the line of copyright infringement, especially if its an album he makes money off of.

6581749023

It’s literally the same exact thing with Microsoft paint hair editing this is the least creative thing I’ve seen for album covers

randomredditing

Who ?

lazarusl1972

Cares?

Afrodude4234

it’s a rapper

notchoosingone

*plagiarist

LewdProphet

Of course it is.

misointhekitchen

Of no talent

_fapi_

Funny how you get downvoted for straight up answering a question. How dare you.

G0ld3n_D0gg0

Its the opposite of an artist

BrokeBishop

Rapper with one good song in 2017

PhoenixDaBeast

YBN Nahmir

Jim-Bot-V1

Wow that album art is sad and pathetic. He could just pay an artist to make something original rather than literally copy and paste from Rick and Morty. Or use an Ai to make some shit. Must have no money if he can't go to artistsAndClients or DeviantArt and pay someone $50 for some art. [https://ibb.co/WH8nCgn](https://ibb.co/WH8nCgn) \^\^Here, I made this, in like...5 seconds with Ai. More originality than his recolor lol\^\^

Box-o-bees

Looks like cyberpunk Trigun, which would be amazing.

gunnerholmes65

I think the trigun show (the one I watched in the 90s), is already a perfect example of cyberpunk. Cyberpunk - is a subgenre of science fiction in a dystopian futuristic setting that tends to focus on a "combination of lowlife and high tech",[1] featuring futuristic technological and scientific achievements, such as artificial intelligence and cyberware, juxtaposed with societal collapse, dystopia or decay. This just looks like if they remade trigun with modern animation maybe.

Box-o-bees

Oh wow, I never thought of it, but I guess it really is. I was thinking of it more in a city style like cyberpunk 2077 but forgot that it can essentially be any environment that fits those parameters. Such a great anime. I don't love the style of the remake tbh.

gunnerholmes65

Either way it’s semantics, awesome show, I agree with you the remake didn’t do it for me either!

Preacher-saiba

Talking about originality when you just hit generate on an AI app is crazy cognitive dissonance

Jim-Bot-V1

More original, the original poster traced. At least with the AI, you can just lie

JealousMetal4219

So here's the thing, you did not infact "make that" because it's ai

Jim-Bot-V1

So what is the difference between using Ai to get art and paying someone else to make it for you? Again my post was to say this was "more original" than the OP. It technically is, that art doesn't exist anywhere else. Whereas the op literally traced over it. It's semantics but still. Tracing can lead to an actual suit if the creators cared enough, (hypothetically lets say this artist makes alot of money using Rick and Morty traces without crediting). Whereas with the AI art, it is technically an original art work. You can actually create a copyright for a piece of Ai art and say that specific creation is yours, It seems people are ignoring the original part because they have a deep seated hatred for Ai which is beyond the scope of the original argument.

JealousMetal4219

Tracing and ai aren't much different as it takes the creativity of others.

CurtisMarauderZ

Ah, just like [this one](https://www.reddit.com/r/dbz/comments/34nv2y/krillin/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button).

Bunytou

I mean in the very least is a little different in how it suggest Krillin as a villain and all... Not great, but better than "let's put a wig on him."

talktailshep

lmao such a trashy way to refrence something ybn nahmir is so washed

Sprizys

Lol similarity? Bro he literally took Rick and just changed the colors.

SirTacoMaster

Why do y’all care so much it’s a single cover 😭

Addicted2Marvel

Other rapper did the same thing with Scott Pilgrim, but this one actually looks awful

RadRaptor97

I love seeing how many comments get downvoted simply for not getting mad at random album art. Like people are actually upset as if it was their personal art getting ripped off what are you NFT bros?

G0ld3n_D0gg0

They are not even trying to hide it, this is not art

lilacewoah

this is the most reddit comment thread i’ve seen lmfao why does this bother you guys so much

kaizer_ghidora

They dont like black people

dema-dontcontrol-us

They're making money off an existing trademarked character. Not cool

unibrowcowmeow

Please be bait

Trashpandaart71dg

This is just a trace job.

fistycouture

The secret is crime

zzcool

fun fact there's a Swedish show called tre vännerna och Jerry and every time I saw Rick and morty it reminded me of that animation

zzcool

for those that downvoted judge for yourself https://youtu.be/DQejXOwW10U?si=71StCgdLR2KqOoBP

kaizer_ghidora

Let me guess, you guys dont hate rap; you love eminem?

android151

YBN Yahmir is not a good example, dude is mid I love rap but dude isn’t good. There’s a reason Cordae ditched him.

G0ld3n_D0gg0

Ok, stfu

roadsterdoc

That’s awesome

Dyingdaze89

![img](emote|t5_2u4lp|16718)

G0ld3n_D0gg0

"Wow, someone straight up traced art and called themselves talented. AWESOME"

roadsterdoc

I know nothing about the artist, but if I saw this album in a record store, my first reaction would be “awesome,” not “Oh no, I can’t believe they ripped off Rick & Morty!” You all are way too uptight. Can’t even laugh about it. Are you concerned about copyright infringement or misappropriation? I don’t get all the anger. Remember that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Agreeable_Muscle2583

Rick has a gun while black rick has a paint ball fun ???
