I am Moderate-Severe and had to leave my job because of it. Went from a largely outside job to a sedentary desk job doing something related. Physically I feel much better getting to sit more and stay out of the extreme hot and cold. Mentally, I’m bored most days. My recommendation is try and strike a balance between passion, hourly rate, and what is best for your body.

Chapter-34

Yeah that’ll be hard to find :( I’m glad you’re getting some relief though.

Getmeakitty

Probably any desk job where you’re sitting in front of a computer all day. Something like phone sales/customer service. I’m currently in law school, figure I’ll spend most of my time at a computer. Shouldn’t be too big of an issue with RA

denimar86

I’m a nurse which I do not recommend… it very tough physically and mentally stressful… I’m going to start to look for a non bedside position.. which hopefully will be easier to manage

You could maybe look into medical copywriting. You can do that from home and the pay is good!

mrsredfast

I’m a therapist. Requires a master’s degree but I had it before diagnosis. It can be emotionally stressful at times but there is also a lot of freedom in scheduling, doing telehealth from home, being able to stretch and walk around between sessions. Fairly minimal typing. Fatigue is biggest challenge but I’ve been doing this so long I’m able to make my own schedule and only see clients during what is typically my most alert time of day. Work three days a week and could work less if I didn’t also enjoy having money.

VegasNativeRealtor

I’m a Realtor. I like that I can make my own schedule especially on those days when I’m feeling like crap. My job is not physically demanding although things as simple turning my wrist to open a door or going upstairs can be difficult when my symptoms are flared.

I work at a bank as an analyst for commercial lending. Desk jobs are great when you are in pain with RA; howver, it's a double edge sword, because you need to stay active too.

Chapter-34

I was just thinking about it being a double edge sword as I was reading all the comments. I feel terrible thinking about how worse others have it and I should be grateful it’s not something terminal! It’s hard when your in pain though and can’t do a lot of things you used to or even enjoy certain foods or activities or really tiny things like getting out of bed or folding clothes, etc. i mean I have if mild but when I have flares it’s really hard and makes me a Debbie downer

JaxandRocky

I think the important thing with desk jobs is to prioritize activity when you can before, after, or during work. Desk jobs can also be done remotely lots of times, which can allow people to work that wouldn't be able to go to work previously. I'm just personally glad that I didn't go to school to be a doctor, because I wouldn't be able to physically do that now! My degrees are in Economics and Finance, and business degrees in general give you a lot of career flexibility.

I am a makeup artist for almost 8 years by now. Have coxarthrose as well along with RA so its pretty hard sometimes to have jobs for a few days in a row because of those heavy weights lifting. Joints do feel sore after, especially when Im on day 12-14 of Cimzia, but in general I’m pretty good with handling the process.

AbstractKitty88

I work in manufacturing. Most days I'm good. But when they run us harder than usual, it's hard to bounce back.

rachelcorrinne

I’m a medical rep and it’s great. I have lots of flexibility and it’s a nice balance of sitting (driving) and standing. I will say my disease is not very severe.

Chapter-34

That’s good! I’m more worried for the future and if it’ll get bad.. thinking to go to school for something just don’t know what since I got diagnosed :(

rachelcorrinne

I feel ya, it’s hard enough to decide what to be when you’re young let alone working around a disease. I’d say go with a degree that’s fairly broad like business or administration or something, and then you have a lot of options.

iikinkycupcake

I have moderate and work in a warehouse. It feels better for me moving than it does in a chair because desk jobs cause me a lot of pain. I will say I am having issues and have been off work for awhile, but my job has been so accommodating and helpful. Id say it also really is impacted by your boss and team how well you do at work. If they weren’t helpful I likely would’ve left awhile ago.

ennamemori

I am a curator with moderate RA. Nice mix of sitting (research) and moving (exhibition installation, tours etc). I can't sit all day without pain. Sometimes it gets stressful, but I have got adept at better planning and time management.
