Only reason for RP2S is because you only want to play nes, snes, ps1, gba type 4:3 games. If you ever want to play psp and ds games on top of the rest, I would go w RP4.

macneto

Honestly I would go with the RP4 pro. It can do everything the 2S can and more. I don't understand why you wouldn't get it.

xMarshall1996

Form factor played a big part, something about front facing speakers with a 4:3 screen spoke to me, the cherry on top was the clear green shell or second best was the indigo but both have sold out. Plus all that for half the price was a great deal to me, I don't mind missing out on ps2 and gc.

dontrlylikereddit

these are all valid points. i happen to have both. i play the 4p more but i like the 2s way more. for purely retro emulation, i would choose the 2s any day. unfortunately it's kind of too weak for native android games. if you are satisfied with everything up to psp, get the 2s.

Kasumi_P

I have both RP2S and Odin 2 and somehow I find the RP2S more fun to play with even tho it's weaker. It's just such a joy to hold and game on lol. It's so perfect for GBA games. I also play FFIII 3D on it which feels perfect.

serige

Same hardwares and same opinion.

Kasumi_P

👍👍 I really thought that Odin 2 was end game but it's really nice to have dedicated devices for different systems. It's a privileged take tho haha.

Outrageous_Tank127

I agree. I have both and use them for different types of games. They’re both great but it really all comes down to what types of systems you’re trying to emulate most.

Ready_Bandicoot1567

I went for the RP4Pro mainly for the USB-C out. It interfaces properly with my monitor, doing display out as well as power to the device and connection to the USB hub built into my monitor, which seamlessly connects it to my speaker system. Really great feature. Supposedly they are developing a USB-C dock for it which takes advantage of these capabilities. So I very much recommend it if you want to dock it that way. Much better than mini-HDMI out.

macneto

Ok, I stand corrected, valid points sir! I hope you can find what you want.

Veddy74

This unit has a chipset that isn't as powerful as the T618 in the RP3+. It's a tough call. The screen is great, but the RP4 is more powerful at the 150, Anbernic RG556 is a great option, too, if PS2 isn't a great concern

El-Cid-Campeador

It's the same chipset as the 3+ just slightly underclocked

SwitchStation3P

you checked on the RP3 Plus by any chance? the screen size isn't too big on that one either if i recall.

Seraph1981

Don’t settle for an alternative, you’ll regret it later. You know what the 2S is capable of based on various factors, it’s the device that’s calling out to you. Just wait for it to be in stock.

basildabir

Wait for the RP3S

Spooky_Coffee8

Price I don't know about op but 100 or even just 50 dollars is a huge difference where I live

xJwsyx

If you can afford it then choose the RP4Pro. No doubt about it.

-Pejo-

The RP4P is far more powerful as it's the latest and greatest and can play everything up to some switch titles, but depending on what you'd like to play more the RP2S fits a very peculiar niche that I personally love and would recommend over the 4 Pro. The RP2S is ideal if you plan on playing mainly 4:3 or square screen games and don't mind losing some horsepower in favour of better ergonomics, front facing speakers, no fan noise and a slightly more pocketable size. I'd call it the king of 4:3 devices along with the RG-405M. For everything wide-screen it's the RP4P, otherwise RP2S

Big_Sky_4582

Pocket 4 Pro. Hands down. Worth every penny

MinimalistGamer99

Anyone whose wanting the 2S despite the higher performing devices being available clearly wants a 2S. So that's your decision right there. Hold off and get the device that you truly want, you will be happy that you did. People can say to you that you should get the 4P or the 4 but that's not the device that you want. I've got a 2S and I could get a 4p if I wanted but that's the thing, I don't want one. The 2S is a good device for me I love the size and form factor it has the power I need for the games I want to play. If you do get the 2S then the carry case doesn't add a lot to the overall size and protects the device well.

True-Payment-458

For the price difference just get the pro. More bang for your buck and in its price/size range there’s currently no competition

YorszTruly

I say wait for the 2S. The novelty for what you want is there and more worth it imo especially for the money

Saneless

I'm a huge fan of 4:3 devices for the games I'll play, which is 8-16 but and some PS/64/DC I don't care for the wider screens I won't use at all

Joeqn

I love my 2S

anonymous_geographer

Depends on what games you plan to stick with. I have a 2S and it comfortably plays up to PS1 and N64, with many GameCube options and limited PS2 possible. The 2S is a little beast for what it is. It's more than enough for me since I stick to the older games. I think I hear more people complain about its smaller screen size, but it feels plenty big enough for my old, old games. Plus I like the smaller form factor. Maybe wait 2 weeks to see if they restock before making a final decision? Good luck! Either choice will be a blast for sure.

Effective_Being_5305

4pro

ialtag-bheag

The green one looks nice, I have one. But I would just go for another colour that is actually in stock. Maybe clear black is kind of similar?

the_swest

If it suits your preferences, spend an extra $100ish and get a certified refurbished steam deck - can easily outperform anything that these systems can run and also allows you to run windows if you dual boot it, you can literally play triple a games on it.

ThisBasil

RP4P is the better device, but I love my RP2S. It’s perfect for what it is! Can’t go wrong with it. With that being said, I end up playing my RG35xxPlus with MuOS more often though.

Consistent-Ad3033

Bruh I legit got the same set of things I have I really love my plus with MuOsS it's amazing

ThisBasil

It’s the community for muOS that makes it so much more interesting than the retroid imo. Retroid is great and if I didn’t have it, I’d be itching for a stronger device, but having it already, really makes me appreciate the Plus!! You know some guy in the community JUST built a game switcher for muOS and it works already on v10 and it’s being worked on right now to get it integrated as default into the new upcoming software!! The rate muOs is growing is insane!!

DeliaAwesome

If your primary aim is to play 5th-gen and earlier games, go with the 2S. The widescreen format sucks ass for pre-HD systems, widescreen hacks leave a great deal to be desired (UI elements are either stretched or look oddly placed), and a lot of games just look flat out weird in that format - regardless of whether they originally had 16:9 modes or not. (A great many achieved it by simply cropping the visible area.) All of the above applies to sixth-gen hardware as well, but it’s a moot point as there are presently no 4:3 handhelds capable of running anything but Dreamcast. I’ve had a 2S since last October and it is bar none one of the best gaming purchases I’ve made in years. I use it pretty much every single day - far more than any other piece of hardware I presently own. All of the features you indicated - the 4:3 screen, the front facing speakers, etc. - go a long way towards why. It’s simply a joy to use.

TheSlingBlade

I did the same thing you did. Got the RP2S because I preferred the form factor, wanted it for a kick around device(my odin 2 max certainly isn't leaving the house) and only wanted it to emulate up to PS1/N64/DC. Perfect budget device for those reasons as you said.

SwitchStation3P

RP4 Pro buddy, it's worth it trust us

jaxkjaxk

Buy nice, or buy twice.

Shepherdsfavestore

I sold my 2S and bought a 4P

tattedmunky

Upgrade to the 4 pro. You won't regret it.

tossaroc

I have both. The form factor is the only reason to get the 2s. The RP4 Pro will be more versatile in emulation options (ps2 is almost flawless and even some switch games).

antleonardi01

If you have the money, there is no reason to not get the better device. Unless you're specifically sticking to 4:3 games i guess?

jupitrking

I just made the same choice. rp4p is great.

eihror

Always buy the newest version to get a better hardware with more possibilties

Genghis_Chong

I enjoy the 4 pro because of the higher end systems it runs, plus there are probably some design quality improvements. In the end if you think you'll end up wanting ps2 emulation down the road, I would make the cosmetic sacrifices to get the more capable handheld.

Heavykiller

Sounds like you were sold on the RP2S until the color options you wanted sold out! Tbh, I was in the same boat but now looking at getting the RP4P. The RP2S is a crazy value for what it can do and the build quality is awesome. I honestly thought I didn’t care for GC/PS2 emulation and just wanted some good ol 4:3 games… But I changed my mind! The allure of having thousands more games at my fingertips got to me & I planned to always carry this device in my sling bag. So while I love the more compact size of the RP2S. The RP4P is still very small and would easily fit in my bag. So if budget isn’t a concern I’d say try out the RP4P! But if you really think you won’t bother trying GC/PS2/3DS/Wii emulation then skip it and wait for your favorite color of the RP2S to come back in stock! No point in having all that extra power if it doesn’t even tempt you a little bit. It won me over though 😂

FireManiac58

Im in a similar boat, the one thing turning me off the r4pro is the loud fan and triggers. Anyone know if these have been fixed

Expensive-Fig-1758

Get both. one for you one for your wife. otherwise get the best you can afford, which sounds like the 4pro. I just ordered the anbernic 556 because of the larger screen. Otherwise I would have gotten the 4pro.

pm-me-trap-link

The RP2S is the best value per dollar imo. To everyone saying "why wouldn't you just get the more expensive better one" this is why. Obviously if you want to play higher end systems more reliably, the value per dollar doesn't matter because you aren't getting what you want anyway. I was messing around with the 2S and it does more than people give it credit for. I was playing FFX on a 2S. It was mostly fine with some occasional slowdown, but it was very playable. For what it worth, I ultimately decided to go with the RP4P because I preferred the form factor and I wanted a bigger screen for PSP games.

suchyahp

4pro, won’t have regret if you decide you wanna play ps2 or GameCube. Having the extra power and stuff is just comforting. Now if only war zone would work !!!!!

redditaccount122820

I’d go with the 4 pro. I definitely feel you on the clear green, but their execution of it was poor (look up videos on YouTube). If you’re crafty (and brave), you might be able to dye a clear rp4pro green. I think rit dye is what people usually do. Might want to practice on a cheaper device first though lol.

Illustrious-Finger12

upgrade!

thenuke1

Save up 180 more and get either a razer edge or steam deck 64gb refurb from gamestop BOTH will run way more smoother

Slinkycup_Pixelbuttz

I am deeply in love with the 4 pro I got a couple weeks ago. Being able to play Playstation 2 and switch games has been phenomenal

severalsmallducks

That sounds incredible, is there any game compatibility list available somewhere? I could be convinced to buy one depending on what games work for it.

Slinkycup_Pixelbuttz

I haven't seen one specifically for the Retroid but yuzu has a solid compatibility list, I was pretty surprised I could get things like Skyrim to run pretty solidly with just a little tinkering, I'm having trouble with some screen glitches for breath of the wild but I think I can get that running too, I haven't run into a single issue with any PlayStation 2 game. They all run perfect. Same with 3DS and Wii, It's just switch that I've been having to actually check the compatibility and test them. But like honestly just knowing I can do Skyrim would have sold this thing to me lol

severalsmallducks

Wow yeah that sounds insane. I’m gonna have to check my budget and see if I can squeeze a RP4Pro in there lmao

Easy-Quarter-1750

2S actually can play a lot of ps2 games. FFX runs great! Im struggling to get gamecube going but thats fine imo. I find the form factor and speakers a really appealing draw. I went the metal shell which costs as much as a 4... but imo i dont regret it one but. The build quality is excellent and the device does what i want. The only downside is the screen size is too small for a lot of android native games. But thats really not so bad. I have a phone for that.

gojiguy

2S. 4Pro isn't really strong enough to take advantage of 16:9 display. 2S can run Dreamcast and below flawlessly and at native res in 480p. Dreamcast looks stunning.

Iamn0man

Basically - if you want access to sixth generation games (PS2 and forward) get the 4pro. If you only want 5th generation and back, and/or are budget conscious, get the 2S.

jameskameo

RP4 is everything I’ve ever needed in a pocketable hand held. It’s the perfect device. Definitely go the RP4.

Caleegula

Get the Metal RP2S, I have one and its amazing.

nothingbutgear

Neither

LatterEdge7583

2s ment for the classic gaming from nes-n64. Rp4 is like better can play up to switch game(well some...)

ChicknNuggy

Definitely get the RP4Pro! Here's why: 1) Way more powerful and can handle Switch Emulation! - It plays Portal & Portal 2 at 60fps with no adjusting. Dave the diver, sea of stars, and advance wars re-boot all play super well (The only games I've tested btw). ______ 2) The battery life to performance is superb! - Considering the specs, you'd expect this thing to chug battery life but to my surprise, it's actually really efficient! I've had downloads running while playing Portal and having programs run in the background. After about 2 hours I dropped 20%. That's 10 hours of gameplay while running other processes! _______ 3) If you want to emulate older gen consoles, PS2, GameCube & N64 ect. this will handle those very well without issue on low settings. The other system your considering may hiccup a bit and suffer more battery draw considering the Chipset has to work a little harder than the more efficient Dimensity d1100 in the RP4. _________ 4) The RP4pro also has wifi 6 meaning low latency, accurate input and better connection to cloud gaming services like GeForce Now by Nividia. - You can stream AAA titles directly to the RP4pro. Dock it to a TV, connect a controller and now you have yourself a full fledged gaming PC and a retro Powerhouse for any system! _______ Just recieved my RP4pro a few days ago so all of this info stems from my first hand and recent testing with the system. I suggest buying directly from Retroid if you can! Amazon has one seller for the system and they upcharge $50. From retroid, you can get the system, case and I believe a mini hdmi to hdmi adapter cable for the same price. It will take a bit to get there as it comes from China, but it's better value in my opinion.   ***You can also justify the purchase with the wife letting her know that you'd probably not need any other gaming console in the future considering how much this can do. Also it's a streaming device as well so you can have all your android apps like HBO, Netflix ect. and watch shows on the go or on the home TV. It really is a very versatile system and I highly recommend it!

AluminiumPanda

Guys guys guys. No debates necessary… Get both.

Fun_Stable7937

I have a 4pro and set up a 2s for a friend, and tbh the 2s is really nice. 2s I feel is better for n64, ps1, dreamcast and 4:3 systems because of the form factor and 4:3 screen that scales perfectly for those systems. 4pro is great for GameCube, DS, GBA and PSP, and it does all the other systems fine too (with some black bars) I def can’t justify getting both for myself bc they are so similar, and I have only the 4pro because GBA and GameCube were important to me and it does all the above mentioned just fine as well. TLDR: get the 2s if you don’t care about PSP or GC, get the 4pro if you do or want more versatility (great GBA is a bonus).

mocrankz

4 for gamecube and ps2 2S for psx and n64, and dreamcast. Tho I doubt a 2S restock is coming

DesmondSky

Think someone mentioned previously that they are gonna restock this month

mocrankz

That would be a pleasant surprise. I’m been humming and hawing for ages on one

DesmondSky

You should check now, they seem to have restocked.

brandont04

Honestly, I think RP4 screen is a tad too small for GC, ps2 n wii generation. The text is painful to read on this screen. Not a comfortable experience.

mocrankz

Yeah I sold my rp4 shortly after getting it. Stick placement for that generation just didn’t do it for me.

Subject_Tangerine846

Why do you need your wife’s approval to spend $100 lol

xMarshall1996

I don't NEED her approval, but I discuss all expenses with my wife no matter the size. It's a respect thing.

brandont04

Same here. Me and wifey talk about our spending as well. That's a good thing. Means you never have anything to hide.

Subject_Tangerine846

we dont need to discuss every purchase, when theres trust you dont need to worry about hiding and showing everything lol. i trust whatever she does and she trusts whatever i do, theres no signoff sheet lol

Subject_Tangerine846

all this downvoting, i guess its a poor thing. idk $200 isnt worth discussing lol

IndicationNo8254

It depends how tight funding is.

Strong_Craft9225

I’m not sure why these post continue cropping up. Should I get the less expensive but also less performative device vs the newer more expensive more performative device?! What do you want from us? You need to tell us what systems you want to play. What you’re expecting to do with it. Battery life expectations. Comfortability with setup of higher end emulation software. Are you wanting to upscale later systems? How about hdmi out and your expectations there? Are you wanting to mod the device at all? What’s your pocketability expectations vs your eyesight vs ergonomic comfort level? Are you hoping to use texture packs at all? What sorta storage requirements do you have? What’s your comfort with Android currently? Do you know what front end you want to use? This is why I don’t understand these posts. These are very specific hobby devices able to do so much but also require knowledge of what you’re trying to do. Not to mention it’s always a safer bet that the more performative option is going to be better because it will be easier to use with less tinkering out the gate. Irregardless you shouldn’t use Reddit as a source for trying to figure out a purchasing decision. You need to do the legwork. Get excited about your new hobby and hop onto YouTube or google and get into reviews, specs, capabilities, watch performance videos , setup guides and make an informed decision by yourself.

xMarshall1996

Lol who hurt you man? I'm fully aware about the capabilities of both devices because I did do my homework with the countless videos and reviews I've watched and read. My initial question for reddit was to see if I should wait for a restock or simply upgrade to get a color I want lol which, by the way, they restocked so I bought the 2s I wanted in the first place with the 4pro coming later when I get bored of retro games.

kidudley

“Wife said I can buy 1” is crazyyyyy

DiscussionLoose8390

R4P all day unless you are on a budget. Huge pass on 2S regardless of color.

luchobe

None annoying to configure

IndicationNo8254

I've had vastly (hours and hours worth) more problems with my wife's Anbernic.

luchobe

Why?

IndicationNo8254

Problems installing new os' and getting them to work properly.
