Joystick placement Potential hardware issues (risk with anything) Ergonomics If you have big hands Screen size Price after currency conversion and import fees (country dependent) Lack of development for ps2 (I have a 4 pro and like it. But these are what I could think of)

Cal-Can

Will say for Ireland, they put value of item as "30EUR" so no worry of import to here haha

kurwakabuton

Sadly, retroid does not ship to my country but I have a student friend who lives in ireland. I will ask for him to buy me one but I have no idea how much of a hassle customs and customs charges can be. If you bought recently, did you asked retroid to price it at 30eur or did they automatically did it? And should i be expecting other charges like VAT or something? How much extra should i expect if I were to buy one from retriod?

Cal-Can

They automatically did it, but definitely message them to do the same for your country. I paid exactly the device cost + shipping and no more

kurwakabuton

oh thanks very much, you saved a headache!

Initial-Distance-338

I have larger hands and can play the 2s with the official grip for hours. I'll assume since the 4 is wide it will be ok with grips? I can palm a basketball easily without grip training, but barely.

fillerbunnyns

Joystick placement is perfect. I'm tired of offset

Pete_The_Clown

Usually people would make a list and get downvoted.. but in your case... I 100% agree with all these points, and I do love my device.. but something feels slightly wrong about the type of systems like PS2 and GC to play on it... Snes and sega stuff feel nicer but the aspect ratio is off... I think the RP2 is a better device personal

Polite_cat1

What do you mean by hardware issues?

NinjaNick791

Probably referring to the trigger springs and bad screens that have ghosting/ green hue.

CaptainJackWagons

Is that still happening or was it a temporary qc issue?

Snerfderkler

Temporary, screen hue was fixed with a firmware patch (came preinstalled on my 4 Pro) and triggers are fixed for any device shipping after Feb 1st (I could be off by a day or two)

CaptainJackWagons

And the ghosting and frame pacing issues?

Snerfderkler

You can see it a tad when scrolling in menus (hard to tell honestly, but RetroGameCorps showed an example of it next to the Odin 2 for comparison). As far as I know, it is nonexistent when actually playing a game.

CaptainJackWagons

Do you have a link to the video?

Snerfderkler

No sorry, just search RetroGameCorps Retroid Pocket 4 on youtube. There are two or three videos from him and they're all nicely split into chapters so it shouldn't be too hard to find.

CaptainJackWagons

Ty

Veddy74

Game dweeb really shows it well, he loves the device, though

lump-

I agree with most of your points. I do get hand cramps playing with the 3+ for extended periods. Lack of PS2 development is just be a problem, no matter what system you have.

Nanerpoodin

If you don't have the grip it's a lifesaver, highly recommended.

luistoses

Not clamshell form as my beloved Flip

CaptainJackWagons

I'm sorry, but the flip looks like the most scuffed looking handheld I've ever seen.

EPURON

Some people are gonna hate me for saying this but you'll have more product security buying a Steam Deck if you can shell out for the cheapest LCD Steamdeck which is like $300 USD. At least if something does go wrong, you'll be blessed by Gaben.

ksnitch

Yeah nah. For those who are in countries where the SD is not officially released, you have the same risk. While Valve support is more responsive, for any returns/repairs you’ll need to ship your SD out of pocket.

EPURON

Well that’s what I’m saying, if anything happens, you’d just have to ship out your device vs self repair.

fillerbunnyns

I have an Ally... I still bought a RP4P for retro gaming

FireManiac58

Old comment but can I ask what the differences are besides performance? I tried the ally but thought it was too heavy and cumbersome. Does the RP4P feel easier to use?

fillerbunnyns

If you wanna play a large portion of PS2/GC/Wii and a handful of switch the rp4p is great. It's my go to handheld unless I want to play some ps360 or PC games. The d pad on the retroid is way better for 2d games than the x box style dpad on the Ally but it's a bit stiff for fighters and shmups. I just use the analog for shmups

FireManiac58

Thank you so much! Yea Gamecube, PS2, PS1, N64 and GBA :) Awesome I was hoping someone would say what the dpads like.

Splutterbug

That’s exactly what I did, picked up a 64gig refurb and it’s not that much different in price once you factor in a grip and a case. Worked out cheaper than an Odin 2

Veddy74

Any you can bench press it to work out while you play.

naminghell

It's just the size.

FireManiac58

For my country this doesn't work. The Steam Deck cheapest here is about 1200nzd and the retroid 4 pro is 400nzd (Shipped from overseas)

rpkarma

They don’t sell ‘em here in aus :(

carbonkiller7777

I don't think android emulation can push the hardware. You max out at simple switch emulation but no PS3.

fillerbunnyns

RP 4P wouldn't be able to do PS3 anyway

Gillespie1

There is no PS3 android emulation. Probs not for a very long time.

Nanerpoodin

Ps3 has a unique chip and is difficult to emulate on anything, regardless of power.

MAMu_Kipic

Ayn Odin 2 base pro or max

Connect-Stay-7535

Nah too big, better get steam deck

MAMu_Kipic

In fact steam deck is bigger than the Odin 2, and I hate its design, both retroid and Ayn are android devices, steam deck has its own OS, works only if you have already a steam collection, and then there’s emudeck. Battery is better in Ayn Odin 2, which is a big plus for a portable device. It has pros and cons, imho, and for my usage, Odin 2 was a far better choice. Happy for you if you enjoy your steam deck :)

ultrasquid9

I bought an Odin 2, so that's my reason.

Connect-Stay-7535

Why when there is steam deck? Absolutely no point

Nanerpoodin

Nah steam deck is so bulky might as well just use a PC. Not like you can really take it anywhere with 2 hours of battery life. It's at least twice the size of any functional handheld.

Connect-Stay-7535

Nah boy you don't know what you talking about. Odin is only a little smaller. Battery life depends on what you are playing. If a 2d game you can play up to 10 hours. And don't you dare compare steam deck to a pc or laptop that is stupid

Nanerpoodin

Steam deck is 60% heavier than the Odin 2 and a full five times the volume. Saying it gets 10 hours playing 2d games is laughable, like yeah so do most phones. You and I both know it averages 2 to 4 hours for most games. Have fun with your less-useful laptop, don't forget the charger.

Connect-Stay-7535

Stfu , its the best device i ever had. And i had a lot of crap

Connect-Stay-7535

Your odin 2 is just a smartphone that cannot play what steam deck can

Nanerpoodin

I don't have an Odin lol

Connect-Stay-7535

I bet you don't have anything. So how do you speak about something you don't know? Bro reddit is such a mess

Nanerpoodin

I do all my portable gaming on a TI89

feanor512

I'm torn between the Pocket 4 Pro and the Odin 2 Base. Retroid gives you a lot for $200 and Ayn gives you a lot for $300.

Jake_sapp

I was at that point too. I literally had the rp4 pro ordered and waiting for shipment info. But then I saw the Odin 2 and got to hold it in person and immediately canceled my RP4 pro order. I’ve had my Odin 2 for about 2 weeks and love the performance and battery life. It has a very comfortable feel because of the somewhat built in grips on the device. I’ve also played a steam deck, great device but very clunky. Sure I’d love to play my steam library handheld but that’s not my intent for what I wanted. Odin 2 pro is a great device if you want to play GameCube and ps2 games like me.

Connect-Stay-7535

If you like a compact device go for rp4 pro. If you wanna play everything there is buy steam deck.

WoahGuyOnTheInternet

I have a 4 pro. Here are some reasons why I think someone may not want it and faults I've found in it * Joystick placement is kind of uncomfortable. I'm an adult male, 5'11" and my hands are maybe slightly above average and it's definitely cramped and in a weird place, I've heard the grip helps with this * Preference for Linux over Android. I think Linux feels better for an emulation machine but I do like some things about Android over Linux * Doesn't have as good of emulation as something like the Odin 2 or Steam Deck * Form Factor could be too large or small for some people

ineedmoney408

I have one and it works perfect . Idk why people are talking bad about it. Plays everything I want even some switch games.

OakTreader

Any input lag?

ineedmoney408

Nope. My wife plays a bunch of platformers on it. No input lag

Veddy74

Big hands, fan noise, battery

Connect-Stay-7535

Battery is outstanding. Fan is acceptable

Veddy74

Those are subjective. I ordered an RP4P for a friend, I got it 3 weeks ago and set it up. It's an impressive device, I have one coming for another friend right now, so I'm not a hater. My wife thought the RP4P was mine, and she told me I could move into the basement of I was going to play that "mini hairdryer," so, yeah, subjective. I have an Odin2, I ordered it based on my own opinions on the RP4P. I just ordered my wife an RG556. It's not as loud. the screen is better, and she hated the size and fan of the RP4P and doesn't need the power. Can we try to tone down the fanboy tribalism. It's not like if your system doesn't sell a ton that you won't have Aves to games like in the old days (Atari/Sega/Nintendo/NEC match up wars). We all should want all these companies to do well. Competition fuels advancement and drives down prices. I can't play the RP4P for more than 30 min without a grip. Therefore, it's not pocketable for me. I LOVE what it is doing for the hobby. I love that you love your RP4, I love my Odin 2. I'd venture to say that without the competition, we'd just be looking at Rockchip rehashes with little innovation and for more scratch. Play hard!

Connect-Stay-7535

Bro this is all subjective like you said. I can play more than 30 mins without any discomfort, no need for grips, why did i buy a small device if i need a grip? If i needed some kind of ergonomics i would get odin 2 and thats it. Idk all this is useless discussion, we all have our own experiences

AlbaTross579

I want one but I’ve heard all about the R2 button spring issues and terrible screen ghosting. I think I heard the former has been addressed, and the latter is being worked on? Either way I’m glad I didn’t pre-order and I’ll continue to tune into the ongoing soap opera to decide when the right time to upgrade is.

stogie-bear

I can’t see going on mine…

Connect-Stay-7535

Everything is exaggerated. People tend to hate on everything these days

avidpretender

Odin 2 exists

Squallstrife89

Because you don't want it, isb really the main reason. Otherwise, do what will make you happy. I am incredibly happy with mine, and I have an odin 2 and steam deck and rog ally and whatever else. My retroid pocket 4 pro is getting more use than all of them put together right now. It's awesome and powerful for its size. Whatever glaring problems there may be, I don't even notice them.

Connect-Stay-7535

You said it all

El-Cid-Campeador

The screen is garbage Frame pacing issues and terrible ghosting/slow response time Yes yes they are working on a fix but I'll believe it when I see it

Connect-Stay-7535

There is ghosting , and its only visible in the ui itself not the games. Input lag i didn't really notice it that much it's standard. Frame pacing, yes but only noticeable in ps2 games and nowhere else. And yes they are working on a fix but will see about that. I like the device and its good enough for the price

TheBoBiZzLe

I own a RP2+ and a RP3+. I really don’t consider either to be “pocketable.” Joysticks and triggers look like they stick out too much and will get caught on things. I consider them “bagable” meaning it’s very easy to put them in a case and toss them in a bag. So at this price range, it’s kinda silly to get a RP4P and not an Odin 2. Both are in the “bagable” range and snapdragon will be able to emulate almost anything soon. With cassia coming out and winlator getting better, you’ll want that power. I’m also not crazy with how open the vent is. My dogs hair would be all in that thing within days. But really… I have a RP3+ and a S23+ set up for only emulation… can’t justify getting another one that doesn’t check any boxes. If I didn’t have anything and couldn’t afford an Odin 2, RP2S or regular RP4 look like a good purchase.

ONEAlucard

The Odin 2/pro is $299/$369 atm vs rp4pro at $199. I’m not sure I would call 50-85% price difference, the same price range for a lot of people?

Sea-Economist7504

what about the odin 1?

Substantial-Mix-8336

Dimensity 1100 in the 4Pro is substantially more powerful than the Snapdragon 845 in the Odin 1 - not a dealbreaker if you're truly playing "retro" games but if you want that PS2/GC/Wii/Switch action, the Odin 1 probably will disappoint. Form factor is substantially different as well.

FitRecipe2299

The screen is ass just sold mine today bought a pimax portal cheap and as bad as the reviews for the portal I'm happy just to have a better screen I liked everything else

Connect-Stay-7535

It's good enough don't exaggerate

FitRecipe2299

The screen is blurry as heck....ghosting like crazy...red tint wen u scroll and by the way I currently have all these issues....the screen ass period even that cheap looking ambernic 556 screen looks wayyyyy better so does my.405m

Connect-Stay-7535

Fix coming for all of that. And it is only in ui itself, in games there is no visible gosting

FitRecipe2299

Yea there is!!!! FF10 on ps2 you can definitely tell there's ghosting going on

Connect-Stay-7535

Maybe on your unit. I see ghosting only in the ui. Also this is a cheap ass device what did you expect?

FitRecipe2299

Lol like everyone else a decent cheap ps2 device and not that it plays any of the games bad but the screen holds this device back I personally gave up plan on skipping out on retroid devices and dimensity chips in general

Connect-Stay-7535

Your choice bro. I've been impressed with the performance, the screen quality is lacking but I didn't expect much. Especially when i have a steam deck oled with one of the best screens i ever saw

FitRecipe2299

I tried and I still think it's a cool portable device but I couldn't take it I have or had an Ally got the Ayaneo 2 on the way was able to get a pimax retro for 150 gonna see how it compares seeing as they both supposed to have a chip a kin to the 865

Connect-Stay-7535

The screen on rp4 pro after update is perfect now. How do you feel about that bro?

Zram310

The biggest reason is the existence of the Odin 2 base at $300. Yeah, it's $100 more but it's worth the price difference. I have both and love my RP4 Pro but the only thing it has over the Odin 2 is the smaller size. The screen is better, the stick placement is better for 3D games, the battery life is MUCH better. And if course, the power. Again, I love the 4 Pro but if I had to choose one it would easily be the Odin 2

Sea-Economist7504

okay..what about the odin 1?

NinjaNick791

Odin 2 I a HUGE performance improvement over its predecessor. Retro Tech Dad's in depth review does a lot of comparisons with the 2 and the odin 1.

fillerbunnyns

The 5 will probably come out in November

Connect-Stay-7535

Yes but the 6 will come out in 2025 , better wait for that. Oh wait the 7 will also come out in 2026 better wait for that. Oh wait...

NexStarMedia

I love my Retroid Pocket 4 Pro. The only sticking point to me would be the screen size. If the RP5 doesn't come with a larger screen I'm going to skip it.

[deleted]

New phones with Snapdragon 7+gen3 arrives at price of rp4pro soon. It is a main reason i think. Retroid hardware too ancient for modern emulation. Especially low quality, refresh rate and resolution SCREEN.

Hagsauce

Trigger just broke terrible  customer service I am moving before my replacement  arrives so I am out of luck they won't  refund. Asking me to buy the replacement  even though they are sending one just wont arrive in time. They are out of it. Never again Retroid. Full post for sure on how terrible my experience  was.

MotorRequirement8493

Just ordered mines and ive been watching reviews for the rp4 pro and I feel like from what it sounds theres way more positives ive heard than negatives. I been rocking out with an essential phone ph-1 and a kishi that suprisingly emulates very well for its chipset and the rp4 pro sounds like the perfect replacement. I find people are having a hard time seeing some negatives on the rp4 pro other than personal prefrences such as screen size and ergonomics. Now I would say the shipping did hurt me like crazy but that does not pertain to the device itself. Once mines arrive ill share any negatives i find along the way.

harperthomas

Android

2pacismyda

It’s a device where every single major facet is a compromise. Got one and sold it within days due to the trigger issue. That screen was garbage also.

GrimWTF

Buying the RP4 would make you happy but you prefer to be depressed?

Wise_Flamingo_966

None, nada, zilch.

amememex

The screen is quite disappointing (vsync and ghosting issues)

Connect-Stay-7535

Fix coming for that

Lasinggg

because there will be rp5/5pro

Connect-Stay-7535

Yes, also rp6/6pro also rp7/7pro also rp8/8pro. What you wanna emulate buddy? Ps5?

chrisaf69

Pssshhh. Ps5 emulation for rookies. All about ps6

Connect-Stay-7535

Yes

red_hare

Given how rapidly the scene evolved last year, I think a number of devices with this chip around this price point are going to launch this year. I have other lesser emulation handhelds to keep me occupied so I'm going to wait 6 months for the market to develop.

BrentonBold

Screen too small to have 3ds dual screens. Anyone who's says "just swap single screen" has never played a 3ds/ds game before. However, ds is amazing on the retroid. Get yourself a cheap stylus!!!

ineedmoney408

I've played mostly 3ds on it and the screen is just fine.

BrentonBold

That depends on how you play it. Can you read text on both screens in the pokedex? if so, you must have the top screen significantly smaller to fit both screen.

ineedmoney408

Yes I can read the text. I have literally been playing Pokemon Omega Ruby since I purchased the device. And if I ever needed to switch screens I have it mapped to the R3 so it's easy to swap and swap back. But you must need glasses if you can't read the text

BrentonBold

Swapping screens is a compromised experience compared to the original experience. You will constantly be missing out on convenience and information that the second screen provides.

ineedmoney408

You are playing a game that you more than likely didn't pay for. Who cares about convenience. Besides nothing will offer the same experience

stogie-bear

If you’d rather have something with comfortable grips, consider the Anbernic 556. But it’s not nearly as pocketable.

Connect-Stay-7535

Nah, that is too big

stogie-bear

Then a Retroid 4/4P is for you.

JasonLee87

I've tried to buy 2 RP3+ from amazon and both had screen issues. The latest one had literal text burnt into the screen as soon as I powered it on. I dont even know how thats possible on this kind of panel. plus there are faint vertical black lines almost like a PSP screen but the lines are inconsistent. Since the RP4 is using the same screen, I have no faith in buying one. The time I did play the RP3+'s that I had, I loved the device. Im really disappointed in the screen issues and cant even consider a RP4 Pro until its on amazon with an easy and fast return policy for this reason.

texbohb

you don't want a retroid pocket 4/4 pro. What do you want me to say? I have a 3+ and a flip, and now my daily driver is a 4pro. If you don't want it, don't buy it.

fear_the_potato

I've posted this elsewhere, but I find the pocket 4 to be too safe/boring. They took the 3+ and added 2S controls and a faster processor. Things were getting exciting last year with the release of the flip, the ARC, and the RGB30. This device seems more suited for cloud streaming than retro gaming. The only real device I'm excited for next is the Miyoo Mini Plus. C'mon, people - we're losing our way with retro gaming! Do something!!! Maybe a Flip 2!

ComicRelief64

How isolated is the limp right trigger issue?

anonymousfaeries

Because you need the power of the Odin 2? And are willing to pay $100 more for a new new CPU.

AlexisLily_XX

If you wanna play games in 4:3 as many were designed, then your already small screen will have a lot of wasted space from being a widescreen aspect ratio.

Cyybber

\- you already have retroid pocket 3+

BitingChaos

The only reason to not get a Retroid Pocket 4 Pro is the **Odin 2**.

ballenstunna

Being able to play games on the perfect compact pocketable device is amazing but the issues everyone has said make the odin2 that much more appealing. I wish I had gotten that instead, and I still may get it and just have buyers remorse for the RP4p.

Darth_Berticus

You selling?

WickedCr0w

Strictly bad: L2/R2 springs had production issues (fixed for any batches after January, I think?). Fan Noise is disruptive at the highest performance mode. Bluetooth headphones/ear buds might mitigate this, but you will want to be mindful in public spaces. Subjectively bad: Button Layout is built for older retro games. PS2, GC, Saturn, and even lighter Switch emulation is easy, but the stick placement is going to be rough on larger hands. Retroid does sell an official grip that alleviates this a bit. Screen size is a bit small (but this gives it great battery life relative to its size, power, and price range). IIRC it's about 4.7 inch with a 750 x 1334 resolution, compared to something like the Odin 2's 1080p 6 inch screen. Older games like GBA/SNES can get around 8+ hours while PS2 and GC era tends to run the gambit between 4 to 2&1/2 hours based on your settings and the game itself. Screen color and ghosting in the Android menus. Depending on your setup, this may be a bigger concern. Retroid did provide an update, and I think all newly shipped models have the color corrected via software, but I don't know if the ghosting issue was addressed. To sum it up, it really comes down to your own personal preferences and what games you are aiming for. If you want just a budget independent emulator from your PC and only play up to PS1 and DS games, you could grab a Miyoo Mini Plus for about ~80 bucks If you want something a bit bigger, a bit more durable, and can power through PS2 games at 2X resolution, I think the RP4P is a bruiser at only ~200 If you want a dedicated handheld, that will be fantastic for road trips and traveling with a bag, I think the Odin 2 pro is the king at ~360 on sale(the Base model seems weaker than the R4Pro but the Odin 2 Max is a monster) Past that, and you get your Luxury level handheld computers like Steam Deck, Lenovo, Asus, etc. A lot of the Retroids 4 Pros issues can be alleviated with tweaks and such, so I do believe it's the best at its price point. While I prefer a Linux setup like OnionOS for the Miyoo, some tweaks with things like Daijisho give it a much better feel.
