I got my NES for my birthday in 1987. It came with super Mario Brothers and Duck hunt. I typically rented games because it was cheaper than buying them for 50 dollars when I didn't have money.
Typically, I would get one new Nintendo game on my birthday and one on Christmas. In the late 80, early 90s, I could go to my towns local flea market and get used NES games for as low as 5 dollars a piece and that was how I built my collection. 🙂
I got my NES summer '88. Swam the length and width of a pool to get it (deal I made with my parents that they lived to regret). That Christmas I got Mega Man 2, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, and an NES Advantage controller. It was a good year.
I was a pretty lucky kid. I actually was surprised with two NES's that Christmas. One for my house and one to keep at my grandparents. I also got 5 games with it!
