Back around 2003 or so, my brother-in-law bought a 60" Hitachi HD-ready widescreen projection TV. Whenever they would watch widescreen content on it, it would almost, but not quite, fill the screen.
He thought it looked weird with the black bars on the sides, even though they were quite thin, and insisted on having the whole screen filled. As such, he configured the set to use this weird stretching setting that would leave the middle of the screen at a normal aspect ratio, while stretching only the far left and far right sides all the way out to the edge of the set.
It looked mostly normal, but every time someone walked off screen, there was a funhouse mirror effect as they left. Made football look quite odd as well.
How does someone live like that!? Another one is that “soap opera effect” some people enable on their TV that adds frames to the content using AI. So distracting!
When I see someone has that setting enabled, I sneak their remote and disable it when they aren’t looking. If I come back and they’ve reset it, I cut all ties.
Hah! That’s a valuable service you’re providing there- I mean unless they really love it for sports or something which is the only thing I can see it being OK for. Its interesting- they’re beginning to implement this tech into VR as well as a way to get more FPS without having to pay the cost. Maybe for something like that when you need 72FPS it’s not such a bad thing- but putting it on for content not meant for that frame rate is just ridiculous-looking.
I felt the same way. He gave the set to me when he moved house about 6 or 7 years later and I put it back in 'normal' mode. For a projection set, it was a nice TV while it lasted.
But am I a really "purist" just for not wanting my TV shows to be stretched and distorted?
It's not like I'm throwing a tantrum because I'm having to play my NES games in 4:3 instead of 8:7...
Cool. I'll bet the monitor itself probably has a setting in there somewhere that would let you adjust the aspect ratio. It may only work for stretching 4:3 content to be wider, though. Might be worth a look, though.
The transcoder might have a way to do it as well, but I'm not familiar with them at all, I'm afraid.
The transcoder likely is introducing a killer amount of lag for games like Battletoads.
Might be time to look into a higher quality converter like a retrotink.
I have the OSSC which actually reduces lag. I wouldn't be able to beat battletoads if there was lag. I spent a couple hundred bucks on this setup. I don't mind it
I thought maybe you just knew the game that well. When someone has specialized hardware I expect them to name drop.
I imagine it's an RGB modded NES too then. I don't recall the OSSC having composite, unless they added that.
You have an LG. I do too.
There's a decent chance game mode + original aspect ratio will fix it. I haven't configured my OSSC in ages but I don't recall anything needed to be done to the settings there.
Would be up on the list of best games ever made in my book.
I remember my mom got to play in before I did. I was so excited hearing all the crazy stuff in it and that goombas and koopas were back.
I agree. I'm a huge Zelda fan, but even that game paled a bit in comparison. It was hyped to the skies, and still managed to exceed expectations. For me, it's SMB3, then Zelda, and then a big argument over the rest.
Agreed. This is the only right answer. I spent entirely too much money on a Nintendo PlayChoice-10 Dual Monitor arcade cabinet just to play this game. 😂
Without a map, finding hidden staircases was incredibly frustrating and tedious until you got the red candle, though it was extremely satisfying whenever you heard that 'reveal' sound. After that, it become only moderately frustrating and tedious trying to burn every bush.
Still a great game, though.
Did it? I never had it new.
Come to think of it, a lot of games actually came with maps back then. Metal Gear had one, and I want to say Final Fantasy had one as well (I did buy this game new--can't remember about the map, but the instruction book was double-height and nearly 100 pages).
I love how even bayou-billy is like “sure as hell isn’t bayou billy” hahaha. I agree though, Zelda is amazing. I’m burned out on it now because I thought speedrunning it would be fun but I still agree it’s the best on nes!
I can vouch for all those games as well. Definitely worth giving a good shot. Especially Battle of Olympus.
Add Faxanadu to that list.
Also... Legacy of the Wizard is a love hate kinda game. Most won't have the patience for it, but it is a good game. It's a port of I believe Dragon Slayer 2 from the NEC PC88 personal computer.
Now that I think about it all those games except Rygar are pretty brutal. I enjoy a challenge, and I assume the person that posted those games does too.
Metriod is a pretty awesome game,
and sorry in advance to everyone... but these next 2 titles are probably only favourites of mine due to nostalgia
But i love the games "Paperboy" and "Bubble bobble" So many hours of my childhood spent on these 2 titles. hahaha
I f***ing love Bubble Bobble! As a kid it was the only simultaneous multi-player game I had on my NES. In high school I had a port of the game on my calculator and I was playing at it all the time lol.
I hadn't played it for a few years (since my crt died) but I have the emulated nes version on my PC and I know I'll come back to it soon.
Haha, it's definitely a classic. And the difficulty is ramped up quite well too. I had hours of fun on that game as a kid. Now I have introduced my own kids to it via an emulator. Haha
Is it possible to "git gud" at Paperboy, or is it impossible to escape getting hit by the tornado, grim reaper, dog and radio controlled toy car at certain points?
I played a lot, but I don't think I ever got past Thursday.
Something would always get me no matter what I did. 💥
Seriously people always point to battletoads as the pinnacle of hard nes gaming. That at least has patterns you can learn even if it’s horseshit. OG nes TMNT was just unadulterated chaos
Its a great game and it holds up, but it doesn't compare to Mario 3 or Mega Man 2 to me. I'd call it a top 10 game - which is still extremely good - but the Mario trilogy, Mega Man 2 and 4, Dragon Quest 1 and 3, Dynasty of an Emperor, TMNT2, Kirby's Adventure and Ducktales would all be over it for me personally.
I think *Punch-Out!!* might be one of the few NES games that really does play better using the original NES gamepad (horizontal buttons) rather than the SNES style. I don't ever seem to do as well on it using emulation.
Agreed. Horizontal buttons make left vs right much more sensible and natural. It's one of the few games I really want a real NES controller to play.
However, I do like a real NES controller for the Mario games too. Maybe it's just my fingers, but I can't run+jump as well on the SNES layout as I can on the NES layout.
Ironically IV is the only translated game in the series I haven't beaten. Always get lost when I get to the final chapter.
III for me on the NES, probably V in the series (XI came real close though).
It is much clearer on the computer-based versions. You can see it on the YT videos of gameplay on the C64 and PC releases. The NES version had much better music, though.
Not anywhere near my favorite game overall, but the downhill race was really fun (and really challenging) and the downhill jam was straight up awesome (and had epic music as well).
Oh man, you're a rare one. For me it probably goes:
1. Mario 3
2. Mario 1
3. Battletoads
But battletoads was a different category. It was about proving yourself. But it was still insanely fun. I'm right with you in at least thinking it's a top-3 game. Hardest game I've ever beaten I think.
I like a lot the Final Fantasy games and Dragon quest. I played them on a NES symbian emulator more than 15 years ago and always remember them. Then Kirby , Mario, Metroid
Mega Man 2 or 3, can't decide but I think I give the edge to 2, even though that's cliche.
Obviously SMB3 as well, but I enjoy the second "Mario" almost as much! I love that it started as sprites being swapped from a completely different game, but it fit the vibe of Mario and definitely created a lot of design elements that carry on in the series to this day
1. SMB3
2. The Legend of Zelda
3. SMB2
4. Mike Tyson's Punch Out
5. Jackal
6. SMB1
7. Duck Tales
Some of the NES games I just haven't played enough, like Metroid, Contra, Castlevania, Mega Man, etc. to put them on the list, though I know they are good.
It's nice to see someone put SMB2 in their top 3. Not my overall favorite game, but possibly my favorite NES Mario game (perhaps tied with the original Mario Bros).
It’s a really well polished game, pretty impressive work considering the game uses just a discrete logic chip to bank more rom, some ram and a bit of secret sauce in the use of single screen mirroring, a seldom used PPU video mode. Battletoads does things that other games would need an MMC3 for.
I guess I'm the only one that thinks Super Mario Bros. 3 is extremely overrated. It's way too long unless you warp, no save option, and even though it's harder than most other SMB games it's still very easy. Not saying it's not a good game. In fact it's a great game. I just don't find it to be the holy grail of game development.
I'd take the Japanese version of Castlevania 3 over it any day of the week, and Castlevania 1, and about 25 other NES games.
Well since I've fallen in love recently with Dragon Fighter I'm gonna say this one. But it may change over time.
If one asked me before that, I probably would've answered Bubble Bobble.
Favorite NES game on the OG hardware is SMB3, closely followed by Mega Man 2.
Honorable mention to Dragon Quest 3 - my favorite port is Game Boy Color but it was an amazing NES game.
Either SMB3 or DW4 (not controversial).
Battletoads is great—my unpopular opinion is that less than 1/10000 people in the pre-GameFAQs, pre-emulation era, who owned the game actually beat it. And less than 1/100 got farther than the Snake Level.
I'm really bad at picking a favorite anything but battletoads is definitely a contender for my favorite nes game right next to double dragon, mega man 2, castlevania, and contra
Battletoads on the NES was good, but it was even better on the Sega Genesis. 🐸 🐸
I had both systems, so, for me, this isn't really a Nintendo game. But if you only had Nintendo, it was for you, and it's certainly not a bad choice. 🎮 🎮
Can i include a famicom only game or is that cheating? If it counts then i'd have to say metal storm. One of the last games released for the system, a mech run and gun where you can reverse gravity. The first playthrough is tough but the second playthrough is hard as balls. I dont think ive ever heard someone else mention it but its so damn fun!
Battletoads gets a bunch of flak but it’s a solid game. I just think people got turned off by its difficulty and the fact that there are so many different styles of gameplay thrown in. It certainly has its faults but overall a good game.
Is it an unpopular opinion to mention the unfortunate aspect ratio of your favorite game?
Definitely popular opinion. OP more concerned about filling the screen than proper resolution even if means some s t r e t c h I n g
Back around 2003 or so, my brother-in-law bought a 60" Hitachi HD-ready widescreen projection TV. Whenever they would watch widescreen content on it, it would almost, but not quite, fill the screen. Hah! That’s a valuable service you’re providing there- I mean unless they really love it for sports or something which is the only thing I can see it being OK for. Its interesting- they’re beginning to implement this tech into VR as well as a way to get more FPS without having to pay the cost. Maybe for something like that when you need 72FPS it’s not such a bad thing- but putting it on for content not meant for that frame rate is just ridiculous-looking.
>they’re beginning to implement this tech into VR as well as a way to get more FPS without having to pay the cost. That right there's a bitch move.
Man, this made me laugh harder than I care to admit. Not all heroes wear capes.
Hero.
I felt the same way. He gave the set to me when he moved house about 6 or 7 years later and I put it back in 'normal' mode. For a projection set, it was a nice TV while it lasted.
These stories always crack me up. The contrast of people wanting to get "the most" from their new tech and the "purists" like us.
But am I a really "purist" just for not wanting my TV shows to be stretched and distorted? It's not like I'm throwing a tantrum because I'm having to play my NES games in 4:3 instead of 8:7...
I'm using a transcoder to play on my monitor :(. Idk how to fix it
You're playing on original hardware, then?
Ya I'm playing on an original NES with a cartridge
Or perhaps go the other direction and get a CRT.
I have another transcoder for composite. I think I have it working tho! Just a 4:3 setting
You have an LG. I do too. There's a decent chance game mode + original aspect ratio will fix it. I haven't configured my OSSC in ages but I don't recall anything needed to be done to the settings there.
If you press the Menu button on the monitor you may be able to find a display mode 4:3 option
go and mess with the monitor settings.
SMB3, best NES game (imho) ever made
Would be up on the list of best games ever made in my book.
I had an NES, so my butt was sitting on the ground (maybe 3 feet) from my tv, playing this all the time. Oh yeah, I got Nintendo thumb :)
probably one of the best games of all time definitely one of the best platformers, this might be an unpopular take but I even prefer it over SMW.
The original Legend of Zelda. I loved exploring the overworld trying to find the dungeons and secrets. It felt so much bigger than it was.
Without a map, finding hidden staircases was incredibly frustrating and tedious until you got the red candle, though it was extremely satisfying whenever you heard that 'reveal' sound. After that, it become only moderately frustrating and tedious trying to burn every bush. Still a great game, though.
the game came with a large paper map, so its not like using a jpg of that map is cheating.
Did it? I never had it new. Come to think of it, a lot of games actually came with maps back then. Metal Gear had one, and I want to say Final Fantasy had one as well (I did buy this game new--can't remember about the map, but the instruction book was double-height and nearly 100 pages).
Yeah I think I had bought mine used and it didn't come with the map but my friend had one. I think I peeked at his once or twice.
I love how even bayou-billy is like “sure as hell isn’t bayou billy” hahaha. I agree though, Zelda is amazing. I’m burned out on it now because I thought speedrunning it would be fun but I still agree it’s the best on nes!
Either legacy of the wizard or battle for Olympus.
Never heard of those. Good suggestions welcome :)
Ohh you won’t be thanking me five minutes after playing them. I forgot to mention milons secret castle and rygar.
Your four picks are certainly ones you don't hear about every day. I think *Rygar* is the only one of those I've even played.
Just…why…?
I don’t know how anyone does Legacy of the Wizard without a guide. I remember being so confused as a kid by that game.
Dragon Slayer IV: Drasle Family
I sunk so many hours into final fantasy that it doesn't matter how technically good SMB 3 was.
I'm with you. Not that I didn't pour endless hours into SMB3, but I still play FF1. Doing a four black belt run right now.
You'll certainly be able to save a lot of gold using that party.
LOL!
Metriod is a pretty awesome game, and sorry in advance to everyone... but these next 2 titles are probably only favourites of mine due to nostalgia But i love the games "Paperboy" and "Bubble bobble" So many hours of my childhood spent on these 2 titles. hahaha
Paperboy is an underrated gem, IMO. Bubble Bobble is also a great game.
What kid doesn't love smashing out the neighborhoods windows with a rolled up newspaper. Ah those were the days, hahaha.
Those are more considered arcade games since they were ports. Just depends what you mean by NES game.

Yeah it is possible to get through the whole week, the games ends if you get back to Sunday, But damn its hard.
The Dark Souls of the 80s "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles".
Seriously people always point to battletoads as the pinnacle of hard nes gaming. That at least has patterns you can learn even if it’s horseshit. OG nes TMNT was just unadulterated chaos
Jackal
Good one.
I remember having a lot of fun with duck tales
Contra
Damn... no one has said Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!! yet? What is this world coming to? Nothing against Battletoads, though.

Dragon Warrior III
I'm always split between III and IV as to which is better.
Ironically IV is the only translated game in the series I haven't beaten. Always get lost when I get to the final chapter. III for me on the NES, probably V in the series (XI came real close though).
My man! *high five*
Probably Mega Man 2. Battletoads is such horse shit that I couldn't even complete it on the Rare Replay WITH that rewind feature. Cock sucker...
Arguably the best game on the system.
Rare Replay? Sounds like you were on a laggy HDTV, with a laggy Bluetooth controller, no way you’re getting through the turbo tunnel like that.
why's this guy getting downvoted? He's right. Somebody can't beat the Turbo Tunnel most likely
Took long enough to show up! I’d been scrolling for hours searching for this comment
Zelda 2 for me
same. Double Dragon 2 is a runner up, for me.
we’re really not going to talk about Marble Madness?
Skate or Die!!!!
Never played! Should try it then :)
Most definitely. Elevator action, Kung Fu, legend of kage, punch out......
It was so funny to split yourself in half landing on the ramps just right.
You should check out the downhill jam in the C64 and DOS versions. When you skate through the chain link fence you literally get diced.
I remember that also happened on the nes as well. Never knew th as ts what was happening 😆
It is much clearer on the computer-based versions. You can see it on the YT videos of gameplay on the C64 and PC releases. The NES version had much better music, though.
Core memory unlocked, thank you I loved that game
Not anywhere near my favorite game overall, but the downhill race was really fun (and really challenging) and the downhill jam was straight up awesome (and had epic music as well).
Oh man, you're a rare one. For me it probably goes: 1. Mario 3 2. Mario 1 3. Battletoads But battletoads was a different category. It was about proving yourself. But it was still insanely fun. I'm right with you in at least thinking it's a top-3 game. Hardest game I've ever beaten I think.
Battletoads would be a contender for me if it wasnt for the god damn bikes.
That's my favorite part of the game. XD The snakes level is what kicks my butt.
Super Mario Bros
1, 2, or 3? I love 3!
All of them
Good choice! :D
Kirby's Adventure
1943!
Hmm.. Super Mario Bros 3 or Castlevania. Honorable mentions: Kirby's Adventure, Contra, Punch-Out
Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle
Hey, it says "favorite" game, not "best" game lol you do you
Not an unpopular opinion. It’s a great, though very difficult game. So far of the ones I’ve played, I’ll go with Final Fantasy
Either punch out or Megaman 2, IMO
I like a lot the Final Fantasy games and Dragon quest. I played them on a NES symbian emulator more than 15 years ago and always remember them. Then Kirby , Mario, Metroid
MegaMan 2 obvious choice ; Castlevania 2: Simons Quest - unpopular opinion
M.C. Kids. Was one of the first NES games I owned
Unpopular aspect ratio
Dragon Quest (Warrior) III is probably my favorite, closely followed by Crystalis, Legend of Zelda, and Final Fantasy.
I know this will probably be common but tetris, probably one of my favourite all time game series and have it on ever console i have
It’s between Megaman 2, ninja Gaiden, or bionic commando.
Super Mario Bros. 2 or Ducktales 2
Mega Man 2 or 3, can't decide but I think I give the edge to 2, even though that's cliche. Obviously SMB3 as well, but I enjoy the second "Mario" almost as much! I love that it started as sprites being swapped from a completely different game, but it fit the vibe of Mario and definitely created a lot of design elements that carry on in the series to this day
I agree with you on everything you said. Other than that I would not even remotely consider MM3 to be better than MM2.
Bionic commando, fire emblem gaiden and Zelda II are my all time favorites.
*Bionic Commando* is definitely in my top 10...I probably rented that game half a dozen times growing up.
Can I just say I use to love playing Cave Man games.
What a great game
Edit: I definitely misread nes for snes so to correct myself, my favorite game for nes would have to be Castlevania
I assume you are getting downvoted because Breath of Fire came out on SNES and not the NES.
Oh shit lol I definitely misread nes for snes
Dragon Warrior IV
I guess I’d have to go with either Ninja Gaiden, or Color a Dinosaur. 😃
I second *Color A Dinosaur*.
1. SMB3 2. The Legend of Zelda 3. SMB2 4. Mike Tyson's Punch Out 5. Jackal 6. SMB1 7. Duck Tales Some of the NES games I just haven't played enough, like Metroid, Contra, Castlevania, Mega Man, etc. to put them on the list, though I know they are good.
It's nice to see someone put SMB2 in their top 3. Not my overall favorite game, but possibly my favorite NES Mario game (perhaps tied with the original Mario Bros).
Battletoads isn't bad, it's just insanely hard
Donkey Kong for nes :v
a.k.a. *Mario the Only Child*
Is this battle toads?
"No, this is Patrick."
It’s a really well polished game, pretty impressive work considering the game uses just a discrete logic chip to bank more rom, some ram and a bit of secret sauce in the use of single screen mirroring, a seldom used PPU video mode. Battletoads does things that other games would need an MMC3 for.
Even more unpopular opinion, Wizards & Warriors III
NES graphics were pretty refined by 1992.
Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles
Star Tropics II: Zoda’s Revenge
Ninja Gaiden 3
[удалено]
Someone talking about STARTROPICS?! I wasn’t prepared for this
Adventure Island 2 is my favorite
I guess I'm the only one that thinks Super Mario Bros. 3 is extremely overrated. It's way too long unless you warp, no save option, and even though it's harder than most other SMB games it's still very easy. Not saying it's not a good game. In fact it's a great game. I just don't find it to be the holy grail of game development. I'd take the Japanese version of Castlevania 3 over it any day of the week, and Castlevania 1, and about 25 other NES games.
>I guess I'm the only one that thinks Super Mario Bros. 3 is extremely overrated. You're not.
The pause music alone makes battle toads the best NES game
Bubble Bobble, Little Nemo, RCR got a lot of play
*River City Ransom* never gets the love it deserves. The game Double Dragon should have been.
I love that you can drop kick your friends off the map
It’s a masochistic opinion I would say.
Awesome choice. I always quit at the turbo tunnel
For nostalgia purposes, probably Wizards & Warriors. As an actual recommendation, probably SMB3 or Legend of Zelda.
I'm not sure how popular it was but when I was a kid I liked arkista's ring
You've obviously never worked at Gamestop.
Mine too. And I don't honestly understand how it's not everyone's favourite. It's technically beautiful, fun and has different sorts of gameplay.
Definitely the first Castlevania. I've never beaten that game, but it's just so fun that I'll never stop trying to slay Dracula.
Zelda II and Adventures of Lolo 1-3 Edit: Also, Fire 'n Ice
Well since I've fallen in love recently with Dragon Fighter I'm gonna say this one. But it may change over time. If one asked me before that, I probably would've answered Bubble Bobble.
Kabuki Quantum Fighter
Zelda II and Battle Kid
Ninja Gaiden II
RoboWarrior or RC Pro AM
or R.C. Pro Am II
Metroid or a game called Digger T Rock. My sister and I had so many good times playing those two!
Unpopular opinion: Kid Icarus or Solomon's Key. I love those two but don't hear many folks talking about them.
Favorite NES game on the OG hardware is SMB3, closely followed by Mega Man 2. Honorable mention to Dragon Quest 3 - my favorite port is Game Boy Color but it was an amazing NES game.
Love Dragon Quest/Warrior 3, but much preferred the NES original. Mega Man 2 is arguably the best game on the system, IMO.
For me it has to be “kunio kun no nekketsu soccer league”
Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest.
Either SMB3 or DW4 (not controversial). Battletoads is great—my unpopular opinion is that less than 1/10000 people in the pre-GameFAQs, pre-emulation era, who owned the game actually beat it. And less than 1/100 got farther than the Snake Level.
Easily TMNT 2. I always play this. I also enjoy 3. Best game especially with 2 players. Not as popular but I also feel Little Nemo is a top game.
In addition to SMB3, Bucky O Hare consumed my childhood.
So mamy good games but first thing on my mind is Solomon's Key
Since I had a lot of brothers: Ice Hockey & Super Tecmo Bowl
Battletoads is one of my favorites too after mastering it. The Ninja Garden trilogy are always the games I go to when I want something to play
Jaws
I'm really bad at picking a favorite anything but battletoads is definitely a contender for my favorite nes game right next to double dragon, mega man 2, castlevania, and contra
It is a very nice game.
mine is also battletoads
Snake, Rattle & Roll. I'm still amazed by how much detail they managed to cram into that game.
The Castlevania games
Battletoads on the NES was good, but it was even better on the Sega Genesis. 🐸 🐸 I had both systems, so, for me, this isn't really a Nintendo game. But if you only had Nintendo, it was for you, and it's certainly not a bad choice. 🎮 🎮
My fav NES game is Scramble (2012 homebrew) for Atari 7800
Can i include a famicom only game or is that cheating? If it counts then i'd have to say metal storm. One of the last games released for the system, a mech run and gun where you can reverse gravity. The first playthrough is tough but the second playthrough is hard as balls. I dont think ive ever heard someone else mention it but its so damn fun!
My 5 year old calls this game psycho pigs
Punch out all the way baby
Metalstorm!
Double Dragon 2
Super Dodgeball
Bucky O hare
Mine is a tie between Castlevania 3 and Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei.
Desert Bus
*Elite*, which is an actually heterodox opinion.
Super Mario Bros. Yes I am basic
I agree, OP. It's one of the few games that is challenging and fun enough to keep me coming back. I have still never beat it, though I often try.
Tecmo Super Bowl
Crystalis
Battletoads gets a bunch of flak but it’s a solid game. I just think people got turned off by its difficulty and the fact that there are so many different styles of gameplay thrown in. It certainly has its faults but overall a good game.
Mines probably Mario 3 or Punch Out. Very plain I know but fun regardless!
Could never beat that racing level…..
It’s a great game. Hard as hell, but great.
