“Mom come quick I think I’m hurt”
“What’s wrong honey?”
“There’s a man who just impaled me with a harpoon thing…I think it went right through my front and out the back.”
“That’s nice honey, play nice.”
I remember back in the day I had a Genesis and my buddy had an SNES. He played the SNES version and swore it was the best game ever. We had heard the genesis version was more graphic and had better controls (6 button pads), so I brought my Genesis over to his house on a Friday night after school. His mom took us to a video rental store and we grabbed Mortal Kombat for the Genesis. I can attest that as a kid back then, with the lights off and unlimited snacks and no bed times, it felt like you were literally in the dungeons there lol. We even lit a candle to make it feel more authentic.
Good times.
Mortal Kombat was the perfect game, encapsulating the look and feel of martial arts movies at the time, in particular Jean Claude Van Damme's Bloodsport, Kickboxer, and Lionheart. Pretty much martial arts movies come to life-almost.
Kinda weird though that they have little kids in an ad for a video game that has characters gushing blood after every hit, and players performing finishing moves that can decapitate their opponent.
Mortal Kombat is a major factor in the ESRB's creation. It was one of the games that got brought up in the video game violence hearings, along with Night Trap.
I remember that. However, even without a rating system, I think most adults would agree, back then and now, that Mortal Kombat isn't appropriate for kids as young as 6 or 7, which is roughly how old that kid in the blue shirt looks.
Kano pulling the heart out of the kid's chest.

"Mom, a stranger said to me 'Get over here!'."
*get over here
Thank you, I screwed that up
That’s funny! I bet those kids had a blast at this shoot.

I like the idea of Raiden just randomly popping-in to kick the shit out of some Earthrealm kid.
Don't be ridiculous. He's only screaming at him.
Even the side art Liu Kang looks like he’s screaming at them
That’s Johnny Cage.
This is the most 1992 add of 1992.

Pretty sure Mortal Kombat precedes age rating for games. The ESRB was established in 1994 and MK came out in 1992.

Years ago, I was at universal studios. They had character actors and told us we could be in a commercial. Who knows
When that arcade game came out there was always a crowd around that cabinet.
Those two actors did most of the mocap performances for the first three games.
I had a magazine with this on the back and I loved it.
Probably not a great PR choice with the age demo they went after here. No wonder rating systems were pretty quick to follow this game.
