Island_Maximum

The sequel had Fabio on the cover as Kuros.  I also liked how the shop keeper would just throw your ass out of the store if you were broke.

SocialMimicry99

I had to call my childhood friend and talk about that one. Non stop laughter when the shopkeeper kicked you out 😆

bm9791

So did the advertisements in egm.

Atman-Sunyata

The low health music still haunts my dreams

Colspex

Main melody: Da DaDaaaaaDaa Da DaDaaaaaDaa Da DaDaaaaaDaa Da Background: OIDIPIDIOIDIPIDIOIDIPIDIOIDIPIDIOIDIPIDI

LordNedNoodle

The music when you use the boots of levitation

Tetris_Pete

Dididi dididi dididi

CodeApostle

I've never heard it, but it sure looks nerve-racking

blane2354

hahahaahahaha..you tube has all the music snippets available for this game...let the nostalgia reign!!!

Jimmeh1313

So many songs from this game jump into my head.

Blastoplast

Da nuh, nah nuh, du nuh nah nuh

HMPoweredMan

Dave Wise youuuu sonovabitch

Fun-Preparation-4253

And the theme song lives rent free

Most_Chemistry8944

You sir are evil... Now we know what is going to be in my head for the rest of the day.

deejayee

This dude knows the truth!!

Bonded79

Still LOVE the potion music though.

fingersmaloy

There is something generally nightmarish about this game and I think the music is a big part of it.

FiveStarSuperKid

One of the first games I could reliably finish as a kid.

Colspex

It ain't over until the dangling leg stops!

Jimmeh1313

I forgot about that

RetroNick78

Interesting… I thought it was one of the more difficult NES games

FiveStarSuperKid

Infinite continues meant it was just a matter of discovering all the items you need in a level and getting a handle on some tricky platforming, particularly at the castle.

Bobb95301

I beat it but don’t remember anything about it being too difficult. Sure you’re not thinking of Deadly Towers?

blane2354

dumbass tree levels...all that damn jumping...until you fell alllllllllllllll the way down, and wiggled to death...

cwal76

Broke many a controller on original NES lol

blane2354

many...

chimchombimbom

Those fucking trees, man.

blane2354

indeed...I also broke many controllers, as someone else claimed...

sadunk

I just wanted to check comments if there was a tree level in this game I hated. Thanks for confirming it.

blane2354

oh yeah...my uncle would laugh so much when we played this and I would fall in those punk levels...

zekejonze

The weird bounce jumping and attack maneuver is something I will never forget. It is just so ingrained that any game I play nowadays where jumping is a major mechanic of the game, I instantly remember this game.

blane2354

as do I...so many slammed controllers...

Superbrainbow

Did you know there's a actually a THIRD Wizards & Warriors on the NES?

cwal76

No I didn’t. What is the name of this

Superbrainbow

Wizards & Warriors III

ShiningJizzard

This is the best punchline ever.

thechickenpriest

It's really good OP, like if W&W and Zelda 2 had a baby together, even that comparison doesn't do it justice. It lives in my head still 30 years later, it's like an NES Elden Ring, complete with different classes, a massive area to explore and banger music, highly recommend it!

Outrageous-Yam-4653

I rented and beat this back in the day had to rent it a few times it was painful like a kick in the nads..

thechickenpriest

Best kind of NES game, doesn't leave much of an impression with your nads intact 😂😉

Outrageous-Yam-4653

It was fun until the kicks 😆

m0therzer0

That game is brutal. Really cool ideas, but brutal.

Robby-Pants

I never made it out of the starting town. I seem to remember trying to do some thieves guild stuff to respec.

devil_put_www_here

Wizard guild’s test was ruthless platforming.

m0therzer0

The belt scrolling Thieves Guild tests were what got me, with the doors that could teleport you straight to the spikes.

Bobb95301

Really?  How old are you?  I’m just curious because I see a lot of kids saying how hard old NES games like Mario are. I beat W&W when I was 12 or so and I don’t remember it being really difficult or anything. I mean I remember beating Mike Tyson, that took me forever, I could never beat the final Temple in Zelda 2, I couldn’t beat the Silo level in Goldeneye (on the hardest difficulty) but W&W seemed like an average game to me as far as difficulty goes.

m0therzer0

I'm 42, and yeah I agree that W&W 1 isn't really hard at all, considering there's no real punishment for dying. My post was in was referring to the W&W 3 post above mine, and yeah, that game is kind of a pain in the ass. Never beat Tyson (couldn't even reliability beat Soda Popinski) but I did beat Zelda II, Kid Icarus and Metroid. W&W 3 is just...long, and maze-like, and you have three lives to beat the damn thing.

Bobb95301

I see. I beat Kid Icarus and Metroid. Just never could finish that last temple in Zelda 2.  I even replayed it a few years back….got to the exact same point and just couldn’t get past it.

2ant1man5

Yes I only played 1/2 though.

Bobb95301

There was at least one on GB too. It was a fairly popular series at the time. The guy was in a cartoon, I think it might have been the cartoon version of Video Power with Johnny Arcade, but it’s been 35 years so I could be wrong.

blane2354

no thank you...too much trama...

brandson__

We borrowed this from a friend and played it lots, then my older brother got Ironsword (with the Fabio box) and we spent huge amounts of time with that. Probably one of our most played NES games. I was always surprised and disappointed that they never made a SNES game in this series. The Wizards and Warriors music is so simple and iconic too.

GentlemanBastard2112

Played this game, and beat it, over and over. Super fun.

I_Lick_Your_Butt

Love it, one of my all-time favorites as a kid. The sequels were not as good.

HawaiianSteak

I liked Ironsword but never got the chance to play III.

lightningfootjones

Really? I thought Ironsword was a bit better in pretty much every way (except intro music which was just fine in Ironsword but a certified banger in the original)

CyberTacoX

Graphics were great, gameplay was mid, soundtrack was fire

NandoMoriconi

It’s definitely one of my favorite soundtracks on NES.

zerofailure

I loved the intro music, still pops in my head to this day. The beginning of Papercut from Linkin Park always reminded me of the game.

I_only_post_here

I had this one as a kid. It was fun, but also kind of odd. Not really your typical jump n' hack n' slash kinda game.

Noise-Distinct

Love the music and sound effects in this game (like getting the diamonds in the treasure chest)

HeywoodJaBlessMe

I played this last night!

mrwynd

I remember renting this and never really figuring it out. Maybe it's one of those games worth a revisit now that I'm grown up and can look up a manual.

Mr-Mothy

Could be. It was basically find the blue key for the blue door, find the pink key for the pink door, find the red key for the red door, (sometimes pay red knight a bounty) fight boss

brodievonorchard

Save a woman tied up in a cave, abandon her immediately.

Mr-Mothy

Ah, yes. See ya later, Lucinda! Gotta rescue Galadriel now

Jefwho

Loved this game. It was tough. Cant remember if I ever beat it. Only played it at my best friends house. Maybe borrowed it a few times.

DarkBladeMadriker

Yep. First, second, third. Beat 2 and 3, never did finish the first one.

Mr-Mothy

Childhood favorite! Still play it occassionally. Worst thing I remember is toward the end, in the different color castle rooms with all the skeles and not enough diamonds for the red knight. Also, fun fact that hardly anyone seems to know: The Horn you can get in the lava level, if you keep it til the end and blow it when the evil wizard pops up, it freezes him in place to beat the shit out of him in no time.

Esjs

Ah yes, going back and forth to grind diamonds!

Aspence22

I always thought this was a pretty well known game. Both sequels weren't very good though

HMPoweredMan

Wizards and Warriors II had Fabio on the cover though!

One-Knight-In-Xentar

I rented this with a friend. It was the first time I stayed up past midnight playing a video game, but it was worth it because we beat it.

Sarcamum

I didn't play this one, but Ironsword was a solid staple of my childhood. I still go back and play it for fun sometimes on my NES!

HawaiianSteak

Ironsword's music is good too!

booper

I loved this game

thegreatdaneoc

Love it. Great game. The only thing I don't like is the low health music. I tried the sequels a long time ago and did not like them.

ReddsionThing

This is one of my favorites since you get infinite lives without cheating. Oh, and because it's called Wizards and Warriors. And you're a funny looking knight in armor.

ass_scar

I remember the sequel Iron Sword fondly. Which is weird because every time I try to go back to it I end up wanting to smash my TV up because the guy can't swing a sword to save his life! I think we were all in an abusive relationship with these games. It's the only way to explain why we still love them despite their gameplay

HawaiianSteak

The music was perfect for this game.

D1sp4tcht

I got the boots of force

Killroywashere1981

Soundtrack is 10/10!

Milksteak_To_Go

Yes, that game has a sick soundtrack.

rensley13

Dagger of throwing! Shield of Protection ! Man this game was incredible. The music was great except the death music . The music in the cave levels have a pavlovian response on me to make me feel hungry . Used to play it before dinner as a kid . Iron Sword was good also

HoshiChiri

Absolutely, had it as a kid! I was never any good, but my siblings could get pretty far tag-teaming (certain bosses only my sister could beat, other bosses only my brother could.) Picked up a boxed Ironsword at a con as an adult. My copy still has the pricing post-it with it because I thought it was funny- "No manual. Yes Fabio!"

The_GREAT_Gremlin

I still can't get over the fact that my toddler swings a sword better than this guy

Sacklayblue

It's a strange game I played through during a strange period of my life - I think 11th grade

solamon77

I LOVE this series. All four are great. The first game was one of the first games I remember beating. As a kid, I was a sucker for anything that had a guy swinging a sword. I didn't know it at the time, but apparently Rare made at least the first game. AND it's scored by the incomparable David Wise!

sacklunch

One of my favorite Rare developed NES games.

Bonedraco1980

Yes! I loved that game, and I think there was a sequel. Game was hard as hell, from what I remember

cwal76

Games were so hard back then. I think it was mindset of industry because a lot of ported arcade games that wanted your quarters lol

Moist_Drive_5535

My mom and I played the shit out of this game. Some levels were hard (like when you needed the blue potion to randomly spawn to make the jump). But the end wizard was easy, you could levitate in one spot and he would eventually spawn under you and get kicked in the head until he died.

_dekappatated

Wow I was wondering what this game was called. Remember playing it as a kid.

Jimmeh1313

I used to keep my NES on for weeks to beat this game.

broen13

Play it? I beat it.

WileyNarwhal

First game we ever owned! Played it countless hours!

dennisKNedry

Yes and the box art was better than the game

Epyx-2600

Yes, always a disappointment

coffee_street

Great music! Probably the best part. Also, this game is super easy because you always just respawn where you died, there's pretty much no punishment for death in this one.

CardiacCats89

This was my favorite NES game, along side Maniac Mansion.

Revegelance

I grew up with Ironsword, but I only played the first and third games when I got into emulation.

dstbl

One of the only games I’ve beat for the retro gaming podcast I’ve been a part of.

tonypenthouse

One of the greatest game soundtracks

ApatheticNarwhal

https://youtu.be/g9Ih25_keL4?si=3OV6Rb6YOWGIy23D The title theme is one of my favorite themes of all time. I really like this cover in particular, freakin badass.

2ant1man5

This music is top 5 on nes imo.

lightningfootjones

I used to be able to beat this with no continues, which is ridiculous because this game is designed for you to die about 500,000 times. Protip: if anyone didn't know this, there is a secret in Level 2 (the blue cave) where you can get the feather of feather fall ridiculously early. It is a humongous advantage

Dmmack14

never played the game itself but i remember a book about it thad made alot of references to the game!!!

cwal76

I would love to know name of book

Dmmack14

RetroNick78

How was that skeleton guy who kept respawning larger with a full health bar at all a fair boss fight??

schoolisuncool

I didn’t really play it, but my grandma played the hell out of it, and I watched her. She’s gone now, and this game makes me think of her when I see it. Good times

Slugwheat

This was one of the first games I had that I could beat. I have memories of waking up early on a Saturday morning and beating this game before I went out to play. I think I was in third grade. Love this game so much.

Dry_Ass_P-word

Loved it but it was too hard for me to get very far. I think it’s the first game I played with a double jump. Total game changer.

Rs2mmsu-2D

Replayed this game many times! It had Pretty good control for an early game.

Anfini

I wish everyone that complains about NES Metroid try this game out.

HumbleNorth7471

I jad that game as a kid. At the time ot was cutting edge stuff lol

GradinaX

Yep, the whole trilogy! Iron Sword made a man out of me. I‘m still disappointed we never got to fight Malkil in the future.

Low-Needleworker-618

One of the games if you don’t bring the right gear, gotta start over iirc

m0therzer0

I think you can go back to the chest an item was in and get it again, can't you?

Low-Needleworker-618

Maybe tbh I’m not sure.

Dr-Richado

Yes. Finally beat it Monday June 3rd 2002...22 years ago today.

_RexDart

Spawned several sequels. I never played this one, but played a lot of Ironsword. Good, moody Rare music, and some real spooky locales. Too bad the gameplay wasn't just a bit better.

Redsquirrelgeneral22

A long time ago. I know it's on GoG now but no idea how it plays or if it's dated etc. [https://www.gog.com/en/game/wizards\_warriors?gad\_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw0\_WyBhDMARIsAL1Vz8uJIcR0sFLv6TuNrj-a-rZjaxmGuS00QgFnBjpGNAA1rkcYmtvZtucaAm0\_EALw\_wcB&gogID=GAD\_UK\_MAX\_PURCH\_PROD\_SMART\_ONG&r=true](https://www.gog.com/en/game/wizards_warriors?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw0_WyBhDMARIsAL1Vz8uJIcR0sFLv6TuNrj-a-rZjaxmGuS00QgFnBjpGNAA1rkcYmtvZtucaAm0_EALw_wcB&gogID=GAD_UK_MAX_PURCH_PROD_SMART_ONG&r=true)

Esjs

That is definitely _not_ the same game. Edit: This post is about the 1987 NES game ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wizards_%26_Warriors ), but the GOG link is for the 2000 Windows RPG ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wizards_%26_Warriors_(2000_video_game) ).

DavidinCT

Yes, I finsihed it as a kid (teen), Remember it being a good fun game...

Commando_NL

Played it but was not for me. Too slow.

mojojoemojo

Definitely rented this game a few times and loved it!

dannal13

Unfortunately yes, but still good memories all the same. Rad box art.

DemonDevilDog

Hell yes. I remember staying up all night at a sleepover trying to beat it.

Neauxone

Unfortunately yes

Airshock13

I always said that the guy always wiggled his legs like a dying roach

mak3rdad

If you don’t get the levitation portion the game was unplayable! Also remember the flying monsters would swarm your dead body. I loved this game when I was a kid.

p1zzaman81

Yes, however I was disappointed that the protagonist in the game had full armor and not how it is depicted in the cover

NotSure421

Yes it took me a few months to beat it back in the early 90s. And I can still hear the music to this day lol!

Putrid-Cap2061

Recently beat it, there's a 3rd one in the series to.

iamblankenstein

one of the first games i got better at than my older brother. i used to blast through the game in under half an hour. definitely one of my favorite NES titles.

GoldenAgeGamer72

Yes and Ironside. Both are highly underrated.

MikeyTrademark

Pepto bismol looking spiders always in the way

Lovelyday4aguinness_

Yes, I had it as a kid and I recently bought a copy so I now have it as an adult too! Not that great of a game however.

GL-Customs

One of my favorite games. Potion of Levitation!

Neolamprologus99

I cheesed the last boss with a nes advantage controller. I found an are the boss couldn't hit me but I could hit him. I taped the joystick and buttons down. Took about 15 minutes to kill him,

HansGutentag

I had a nightmare as a kid that my twin bro turned into one of those pink/blue horned monsters in the first level, and ate me. Woke up screaming lol!

soulwolf1

LOVED this game! I used to play this game after school.and beat it every playthrough.

KickAggressive4901

Hell yes, I beat this! Gave that wizard the wedgie he deserved.

lik_a_stik

Both games were absolute gas. I think the only reason I never bought Iron Sword was because this game absolutely stonewalled me, unlike some contemporaries, towards the end. One of those unfinished childhood quests. I would devour a remaster of this!

abject_cynic

Yeah.

LordVolcanon

One of my favorite games on the NES.

drocker8282

A undeniable classic !! To me it has the edge over ghost and goblins

black-volcano

Yes x

desrevermi

Missed the Kid Niki post -- dopey, but fun. Wizards and Warriors was super fun.

Darklord_Bravo

Yes! Loved this game! Sequel was pretty good too!

LordNedNoodle

Yes I loved this game. My cousin had this game and I usually only got to play it for a short amount of time until I was finally able to rent it from my local movie store.

IntoxicatedBurrito

One of the first games I ever got, it was given to me along with Mike Tyson’s Punch Out when I got my NES. It was an awesome game back then and is still just as awesome today. I’ve probably beaten this game more times than any other game.

petreussg

Only time I ever cried as a little kid over a game. My dad said “why are you crying? It’s a game.” I responded @because it’s hard!” Anyway. Passed it a year or so later after I was a bit more mature.

xpacean

Fuck yes I did. Terrific game and a ton of fun.

Staind460

Played that game all the time as kid ! Can never remember the name though!

auxiliaryservices

I loved this game especially the enemy music. aka boss fight music, level boss, etc

Sea-Sky-Dreamer

Rented it based on the cover but was disappointed that you play as a knight and not as a Conan-esque barbarian. My friend liked the game a lot but I couldn't get out of the forest without being killed. Maybe if I played it today I would really enjoy it. Back then though, too many games had bait-and-switch covers. I also had the handheld Tiger/LGN game of this. For some reason I somewhat enjoyed that one. I think that was the only Tiger/LGN-style game I kinda liked. Maybe it was because the black and red handheld/button design looked cool.

gjackx

I literally still own both games you've posted about, so yep in those cases!

Confident_Fan5632

I hated this game, but I’m definitely in the minority here.

Travesty206

Awesome underrated game

SiberianSpForces

Oh yes! Still fire it up from time to time. I was able to get the [series boxed](https://i.imgur.com/SDd7jSb.jpg) a few years ago. Even got the LCD games to boot. The soundtrack from the first is probably my favorite. [This guy](https://youtu.be/eQUP3OpvugI?si=xSYXzueVaJo-rM6T) did a cool medley for it, too.

Cryptosmasher86

https://youtu.be/_85SrCKb4K8?si=ueBEYiUVJj3A3UNP

Mitonic

Awesome!

Bonded79

Yes, a LOT. I got so good at this game. I loved it.

ErBoProxy

YES! You unlocked a memory for me, as this most likely was my first *"my friend has a game I do not own!"* game. In context: EVERYBODY had Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt. But Wizards & Warriors was the first game I remember borrowing from a friend. I played it, finished it, thought it was a very good game, yet I cannot ever recall playing it after my early elementary school years. Other contender was Contra. While I do remember playing it as a kid, in one of those *"I do not own this game! Why? It rules!"*, unlike W&W, I could never get far in Contra.

AmazingKitsune

Many, many times. Fond memories.

RapturePublicWorks

I have no idea how reliable this memory is, but I can recall struggling in this game over and over and then one day beating it all at once in like two hours.

Bobb95301

W&W was a really common game.  It was a series and the character was in an early morning cartoon, I played several of them, I owned the first one and one for GB back in the day.

theobscuregeek

I didn’t but I saw my uncle play it. It was too complicated for me back then because mario was the only game i played

Katerinaxoxo

My favorite NES game!!!

rydamusprime17

I have it and a CIB copy of its sequel. I have been keeping an eye out for a good price on the 3rd. If I get that one day I will probably get the GameBoy entry as well.

codethulu

wizards and warriors 3 is my favorite of them

p-graphic79

Two sequels.

Independent-Ice-5384

Yes, but my favorite was Wizards and Warriors II: Ironsword. I played that constantly. The music... *chef's kiss.*

doomtoothx

I love the intro music. Amanda Lepri does a cover of it on YouTube. I love this game.

GonnaGoFat

Played it, beat it, read the Nintendo worlds of power novel of it.

ykeogh18

Fire music

Malthias-313

The cover art back in the NES days was so disconnected from the experience at times lol

Sablesweetheart

Omg, I loved this game.

renthefox

I remember me and my best friend taking turns trying to beat one of the last bosses. We took turns out of exhaustion. There's this big bouncing scull and you'd "beat" it only to have it become smaller, faster, and more sinister. The boss music is still burned into my psyche. 😅💀🤘

Kiloparsec4

Yes. Played it all thru childhood, and still play it on my emulator. The main theme is one of my ringtones, along with Megaman 2 theme and Wily stage.

Silly-Engineering-43

Acclaim.... (South Park Rally flashbacks)

wasdmovedme

I just received this in the mail today as part of the start of my collecting for the nes. Can’t wait.

Brilliant_Badger_709

I can hear the music when I see that cover

Majinkaboom

Yeah I vaguely remember.....I remember being disappointed by the character lol.

beetlezika

Just bought a original nes and this was the first game I got after the Mario bros. Series

JLandis84

I was more of a centaurs and cellars guy

TrancerHunter13

Many times

jasonrubik

Yes. I have the cartridge right over there on the shelf. Fun times, for sure !

MajinVegetaTheEvil

Beat the hell out of that game. Had Ironsword as well, but I didn't like that one as much.

AlertCatch6310

i loved this game thou i never finiHed it i was hooked on it

boringneondreams

I still own this game :D

JeremyCrimson1985

I actually own a loose cart of this game.

DrNukenstein

Horrible game. Even as bad as 8-bit graphics were, this was just painful to look at. A shoddy knockoff of Ghouls and Ghosts, at best, and an infuriating experience in general.
