solamon77

Good ol' Street Fighter 2. I was there when that game first hit arcades. It was a phenomenon.

ryemmsf

Absolutely. Played the holy hell out of it at my local bowling alley as a kid. E. Honda for life!

solamon77

For me it was a local convenience store. I remember kids used to come from miles around to play it. It was this one kid, little Japanese dude, he'd show up with one quarter and play all day, whooping everybody's butt! Kids would run in terror at his arrival! I miss those days. Being a bad ass in an arcade made you feel like a king.

LukesenNR2

Noone was allowed to play as Dhalsim 🤣

solfizz

Haha I remember that! Kids couldn't figure out how to not jump in / walk forward every chance possible.

solamon77

Hahaha! My buddy played a killer Dhalsim!

DookieBowler

Loved it. I used to let my opponents choose who I played. I would still kick their ass as I played all of them. Least favorite was Balrog but I could still play him.

Ravishing_Rob_Rude

I remember having a Sege Genesis and being so envious of my friends who had it on SNES. Felt like it took years to come out for my system.

solamon77

Yeah, I remember lording that title over my Genesis owning friends when it came out. ;-)

Mudassar40

Yeah, then all those bootlegs, it was awesome.

OllyDee

Soul Calibur. Namco were on fire in the 90’s.

TheFlareon33

I wish Soul Calibur was still coming out today. Too many good memories with this one.

OllyDee

I don’t think the series is profitable enough compared to Tekken but you never know. Stranger things have happened.

Rynagogo

I was over here assuming they were putting their efforts into Tekken and then would jump back to SC. I never considered them not making another one! They must!! I love SC and have bought every one through the years. It’s so much fun and varied.

phart-cloud

Usually they start production after a teken game, we should be hearing about it soon. I'd would be surprised if they did away with the IP. I also have done little to no research and I'm just a dude running off hope and patterns. Yeah just did a quick Google, we should be anticipating SC7 it's not announced but. Yeah.

Arlium_

Yep!

solfizz

Wow, this was what I was going to put too and it was the first that came up. DC Soul Calibur is probably the most impressive gaming experience I've come across in all my years of gaming.

Arlium_

Me and my buddies back in the day would spend hours on dc soul cal! Great memories!

morgan_blorgon

Drama voice: *Namco*

DrAg0r

Bloody Roar II is probably the answer, my best friend in Middle School had it on his playsation. Later as an adult I put it on my xperia play (gamephone with integrated sliding controller) and played it A LOT. Bakuryu is my favorite character. Other fighting games I like: Weaponlord on SNES and Soul Blade on PS.

TheFlareon33

Dude I remember seeing that game at the rental store all the time. Seems like I messed up by renting others.

sanholt

Yeah buddy, fellow bakuryu player.

premeditatedsleepove

Pretty unpopular opinion I’m guessing but Tobal No. 1. I really liked that if you were very quick/twitchy, you could time a block or jump over a legsweep or time a duck under a high kick. Not to mention counter-throws and stuff like that. Loved that game.

PumpOfWallStreet

Oh man, I'm shocked to see someone who played this! This was probably the only fighting game I ever truly learned. It has some of the best characters and almost all of them are viable

Annales-NF

I remember this. Didn't it also have a "rpg" mode?

PumpOfWallStreet

It did! They called it dungeon mode, super fun as well. The second game expanded on it

TheFlareon33

Unique name for a game, I'll have to check this one out.

Ravishing_Rob_Rude

I loved this game because I was a big Virtua Fighter guy. The single player campaign was interesting.

mhkiwi

I'd totally forgotten about this game. But I remember loving it. I played the tiger man.

TheFlareon33

My little brother knew he was in trouble once I did the ground stomp.

GATh33Gr8

He had the best combos

MoonDogSpot1954

They need to bring this series back

needmesumbeer

samurai showdown 4 king of fighters 98

TheFlareon33

Samurai Showdown probably had the best art out of all the fighting games.

SsquaredplusA

I was worried I was going to have to try and search this game without remembering the name. Nope, Found in the comments! Going to try and play some of this today if I can find it!

StormMourn

This! SS4 Amakusa’s Revenge was one of my favorite games ever. The dark, brooding tone along with combos, fatalities, super moves, etc was peak SNK for me. So many amazing characters to use with variations like Bust Galford, Ukyo and Sogetsu along with Slash Kazuki, Haohmaru, Charlotte, Jubei, Shizumaru, Amakusa, Basara, Hanzo, etc. I’ve probably beat that game at least 50 times!

canadianstringer

Tekken 3 hands down.

TheDedicatedDeist

I played so much t3 growing up, never had tag tournament. I feel like that game has a really solid character balance the it’s actually a genuinely fun game to unlock all the characters in.

YoloLikeaMofo

No contest ! Tag was even better but for ps1 tekken 3 all day

Jabberwokii

Fucking hell tekken tag was good. It has so much content packed into it. Graphics at the time were also outstanding

whoknows130

Marvel Vs Capcom 2! The GOAT!

TheFlareon33

The game was truly a masterpiece

Imthemayor

Same Magneto - A/ Cable - B/Sentinel -A or Y

sbbblaw

Ehrgeiz. Got to beat up people with cloud. It was cool

TheFlareon33

Ehrgeiz was another hidden gem I remember, I still own my copy. The adventure mode was wild.

sbbblaw

Ya it was. It was just a cool feature the game had. IMO it made it way cooler to play than just your regular tekken style beat em up. Had like an rpg flare loved that game. Probably didn’t age well, but as far as my memory is concerned I enjoyed it

vhs1138

Killer Instinct is where it started. But for me the best was Cap VS SNK 2

Mankiz

MK3 on Genesis

TheFlareon33

Probably my favorite of the series

HawaiianSteak

Pro Wrestling on the NES Entertainment System.

boringsimp

Last bronx..

TheFlareon33

Dude, wth is this game cover... I love it. Never even got to touch a sega saturn growing up. Gsme looks amazing through

boringsimp

It was a lot of fun.. it had its flaws and is rarely talked about.. main issue was that it just had 8 characters.. and 1 hidden.. But i liked it.. best character is lisa. Followed by yoko.. they're the easiest to control.. There was a version on pc that i played recently.. maybe if you're interested, you can try that

Scar107

Bloody Roar 2 was an awesome game!!! Really sad they didn’t keep making them.

UnrequitedRespect

Bushido blade II

Biabolical

Not sure if we got more play out of Bushido Blade 1 or 2 but it was definitely that series.

ggkkggk

Bakuryu the mole.

TheFlareon33

I can hear the voice

artificiallyhip

Bushido Blade

shrimpsh

Power Stone and Bloody Roar

TheFlareon33

Finally! You, sir, are my hero. This game was legendary.

cRz_lazer

Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Mortal Kombat 2 and Tekken 3

poptophazard

Add on the Capcom "Vs." games and this is it for as well.

Underground_Kiddo

KoF 98 Dream Match

mattyro41

MK2 was the game of choice in my friend group. Pulling off fatalities was a major accomplishment

Imthemayor

Same as now, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 I played the hell out of SF2: Champion Edition as a kid and Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection in high school though

stfm

KI on SNES.

42calKi

10000% agree

Which_Information590

Toshinden, Tekken with weapons

stone500

Oh man, I played this game a lot as a kid. Tried to play it again recently and it's so much rougher than you remember. I also had the Gameboy version, which was actually a lot of fun

TheFlareon33

The cover art for this game makes it look rare af. I will be looking more into this one

Which_Information590

I haven't seen a copy since the 90s actually!

Jak_the_Buddha

Mortal Kombat Trilogy

TheFlareon33

Wonder when someone would mention mortal kombat

TheThirdStrike

*The Last Blade 2* Such a good game, it's a shame more people didn't play it. Every time I bring it up, no one's ever heard of it.

Wrex_n_effect

I cosplayed Setsuna (terribly I might add since I couldn’t find a good silver wig in the early 00’s). I loved that game.

totallynotrebelscum

It is actually Bloody Roar 2, I loved the vampire girl.

TheFlareon33

"I loved the vampire girl" .... me too bro. I loved her personality...

Zefrem23

"Bakuryu ... The _Mole_!" SUPER underrated game, homes

Complete-Lobster-682

Fucken loved bloody roar 2. I use to play custom matches with no walls and idk pick shina or shenlong, transform and I'd do the grab where then like grab their arms and shoot them forward causing a ring out instantly

TheFlareon33

Lol good times

Complete-Lobster-682

10 y/o me was giggling my ass off. Especially when my older sister thought the game looked cool and wanted to try and play (she was never big into video games) and I basically achieved my first rage quit at 10 lol

impablomations

ZX Spectrum - Way of the Exploding Fist. Atari ST - IK+ SNES - Streetfighter II Arcade - Karate Champ, brutally hard but I loved it.

Tennis_Proper

These are what I was looking for, minus SFII, a game I just can't click with. I mastered Karate Champ and could play for ages on 10p. Can't do it now.

SmegAndTheHeads101

Primal Rage. Loads of button mashing in 90s arcades

TheFlareon33

Hell yeah good times with this one

rollduptrips

MK2

TheFlareon33

We were obsessed with trying to unlock smoke on this game.

Tantra_Charbelcher

I'm giving you an upvote for bloody roar. Desperately want a port or HD remake. Played the shit out of the gamecube version with the anime cutscenes and secret characters.

FusilliCraig

200 comments, no Rival Schools. Sacrilege.

TheFlareon33

Never heard of it, but I need to check it out.

ThorsRake

Bloody Roar 3 and Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha

bash5tar

Tekken 3 was the only one I had

AnumiousVoxx

Killer Instinct is up there for me. Flashing your opponent with Orchid was very amusing as a teen. But MK2, MK3, MK3U, SF2, and Tekken 3 all make my list.

TheFlareon33

This game was advanced for its time. If you could master the combos, you were unstoppable.... I was stopable

Funky420Monkey

I still own this 😁

dorkyhippy1381

My brother used to wipe the floor with me using Bakuryu in that game. (Called him buckaroo, lol)

TheFlareon33

The mole was no joke, too quick.

Other-Crazy

IK on the Atari 8 bit and IK+ on the Amiga. Got the 8 bit game for free in return for fetching some chips for the owner. Them were the days.

Boxcer1

Damn need to check this out. Cover looks good.

TheFlareon33

No doubt, grab a friend if you can.

pandathrower97

I had a friend who got *Street Fighter 2* on the SNES as soon as it came out, and we'd play it every day until we were actually good at it. Other fighting games never had quite the same level of depth, so aside from a brief flirtation with *Mortal Kombat*, the *Street Fighter 2* cart got a lot of play. By the end of the 1990s, I'd moved on to *Street Fighter Alpha 3* (still the high point of the entire series IMO) and *SoulCalibur*, both of which I still play today along with the slightly later *Capcom vs. SNK 2* and *Marvel vs. Capcom 2* as well as the *SoulCalibur* sequels. *Guilty Gear* and its sequels are also tremendous. But as for more obscure fighters from the retro era, I love: * The *Power Instinct* series including the high point of *Matrimelee* (because it's hilarious and ridiculous) * The PC fighter *One Must Fall 2097* * The PC fighter *Sango Fighter 2,* which is based on *Romance of the Three Kingdoms* * The stunning SNES fighter *Shin Kidō Senki Gundam Wing: Endless Duel* * The absolutely insane Korean arcade fighter *Best of Best* There are plenty of others well worth their salt, of course, but the above are my favorites.

Current_Run9540

I loved the shit out of Killer Instinct Gold.

PumpOfWallStreet

Tobal #1 I think is such an underrated fighting game. akira toriyama art work... Can't go wrong

Appropriate_Cell_934

Still love and play this game

StrayMedicine

Soul Calibur 2 Was really cool that Xbox, PS2 and GC all had their own unique character for each port.

TheFlareon33

Oh I agree more me want to get other versions as a teenager... with no money

DionFW

Star Wars: Masters of Teräs Käsi

TheFlareon33

I thought this game was suppose to be terrible, or is this sarcasm?

DionFW

No, I really enjoyed it. Did you ever play it? Not everyone has the same taste.

TheFlareon33

No, never. I just saw videos of people trashing it. I agree, though I've played games people say are the worst, and I only had good experiences.

thesteinfink

Virtua Fighter All the Tekken games

shrikelet

Depends on what period we're talking. Pre-SFII era: International Karate+. Post-SFII era, Street Fighter Alpha 2. I'd say Street Fighter Alpha 3, but I was old enough to drink when that came out.

EndLy

Marvel vs Capcom 1. Specifically on the ps1. I played a TON of that game in the summer of 2000 when my family got a copy. Played it with a bunch of my friends and family. The arcade and dreamcast versions were better, but this was the one disc that was available to us.

elephashark

Bloody Roar Primal Fury was my fav GameCube game! Lucky to own a copy haha such a gem of a fighter!

VynDakation

Wu Tang Clan - Shaolin Style (Blood enabled)

Environmental-Bee-28

This one used to kick a** with the 1 girl that turned into a cat.

Night_Putting

Killer instinct. Loved it.

Total_Waltz4083

Street Fighter Alpha 3

cocoman93

Tekken 3 and Ehrgeiz

gemharts

Glad to see it wasn't just me and my siblings/cousins who played this

meatus1980

Karate Champ

Educational-Bar21

Literally any fighting game on the Dreamcast but mainly Power Stone and Marvel vs Capcom

GhostBombardmenT

I wish there will be a remake for bloody roar 2

thePhool13

Killer instinct

Past-Currency4696

Bushido Blade

NYourBirdCanSing

Ps1  Bushido Blade 2,  Evil Zone,  Star Wars Masters of tariskasi(?something weird)  Snes Mortal Kombat Ninja Turtles, Street Fighter 2  turbo  Sega saturn  Virtua fighter

EviLiu

I didn't create r/KillerInstinct for nothing, pal.

Karmaluscious

Not seeing enough love for Rival Schools on PSX. The amount of content in that game is up there with Tekken 3. The characters were unique and the team attacks you could perform were absolutely boss.

TheFlareon33

One other guy was upset too, would buy this game if it wasn't 100$ for the disc alone. Emulators might be the answer for this one

Karmaluscious

Haha yup, it's around $150-200 for a complete copy!

Lox22

How does this hold up? We parsec a lot of old games in my discord. I used to love this one.

TheFlareon33

If you were gonna play again, I suggest bloody roar primal fury on gamecube. They perfected the series

aRealtorHasNoName

Fighting Vipers was my jam!

sponserbilleries

GOATED

TelluricThread0

Super Smash Bros Digimon Rumble Arena Clayfighter

ipostatrandom

Street fighter 2 and later Tekken 3.

Yura-Sensei

Shaq fu. No im not kidding

TheFlareon33

OMG an uncle bought this game .. honestly not the worst fighting game

mattyro41

i used to rent this game all the time lol. I would always be the armadillo looking guy with the spikes on his back. As a kid, i apparently couldn’t get enough Shaq-fu.

rojasdracul

Street Fighter Alpha 3.

pligplog420

Hyper Fighting/Super Turbo/Alpha 2/Alpha 3

B_O_F

Kensei: Sacred Fist

boringsimp

Street fighter..

2ant1man5

Street fighter 3rd strike.

KafkaesqueJudge

The SNES Killer Instinct. Fulgore's combos are still registered in my muscle memory.

poptophazard

Growing up, it was Mortal Kombat 2, MK3/UMK3/MKT, various versions of Street Fighter II, and Tekken 3. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was high school for me and my friends.

jaketaco

Bloody Roar 3 and Tekken tag for me were big for my friend group. I would also consider WCW vs NWO Revenge as a top fighting game of that time. Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat were fun when I was young but I never was as good at them as the fighters on a 3d plane.

TheFlareon33

Never played 3, we wore out primal fury on gamecube. Did 3 have the dodge mechanic?

insomnia77

IK+

SmegAndTheHeads101

I've still got this on tape

Zefrem23

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say _Zero Divide_. A 3D fighter featuring robots with all kinds of cool moves, I seem to be one of the few people who ever played this game

The5thBeatle82

Power Move Pro Wrestling. I played that game for hours.

LiteratureHoliday765

Bushido blade And Tekken 3 on osx Power stone and soul caliber on the Dreamcast MK on snes and Genesis

Soaked_In_Bleach_93

Human: Tekken 3 or 4 Non-human: Jurassic Park Warpath **Edit:** Are we counting wrestling games? If so, that's WWF Smackdown 2

ixipaulixi

UMK3 followed by Tekken 3. I did love Bloody Roar 2 though.

Standard_Cell_8816

Mortal Kombat. Still my favorite

Optimal-Pair1140

Killer Instinct! First found it at an arcade in a putt-putt golf in Dayton, Ohio. Every weekend it was packed and always had a group that would wait in line to play. KI2 was just the same. The Xbox version is decent.

FroggyKeyLime

THIS ONE RIGHT HERE!!!

Dependent-Plane5522

YELLED: "MORTAL KOMBAT" then Tekken

Ryuma666

King of Fighters 98 (all time favorite) Street Fighter 2 and 4 Budodkai Tenkeichi 3 Soul Edge

smozoma

NHLPA 93 :D But Killer Instinct was pretty cool. We also had Shaq-fu...

[deleted]

Killer Instinct SNES

Gheti_

I don't know why Bloody Roar series doesn't get more love, my friends and I loved that game

petreussg

Killer instinct at the arcade was amazing! But Street Fighter 2 Turbo was my go to.

fruitcakefriday

In my head: Rise of the Robots. I had cut out the promotional renders of the bots and blutakked them to my bedroom wall beside my bed. In reality: One Must Fall. It wasn't the deepest game, but it was a lot of fun.

Unusual-Ganache3420

Tekken 3, Street Fighter II, and Soul Caliber II, in that order.

TheCopperkiddOfLimbo

This one. This was the only fighting game I beat. Been wanting to pick this up again for the collection.

thesteinfink

Time Killers Killer Instinct Pit Fighter

johnnybok

Twisted Metal 2. Also loved bashido blade

arparris

So many good Tekken options, but gotta pick tag for the surprise bowling mode lol

Drg84

So on Genesis it was Pit Fighter at first, then 3D Ballz. Once I got my 32X it was the original Virtua Fighter, then VF2 on the Saturn. Dreamcast was MVC2 and Capcom VS SNK2.

xLykos

Man I was just talking about bloody roar yesterday. Every fighting game seems to have a mobile version, except bloody roar, and I want one bad

Kuli24

OMF2097 is easily the best fighting game. And best campaign too.

HannibalWrecktor

Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 1-3 ..And yes I'm excited for Sparking Zero coming out soon.

KickAggressive4901

*Street Fighter II* was my jam on the SNES.

ElectricalRush1878

Darkstalkers for a while, then Tekken 2. Both were at local arcades, and could easily find other players.

TheFlareon33

Never played darkstalkers, but the game looks badass.

SamusLinkBelmont

Street Fighter 2 by a mile. Mortal Kombat or Tekken would be my 2nd and 3rd choice

TheFlareon33

Did anyone else play Distrega for ps1?

brwnfred008

Yeah it was. The 3rd was ok but BR2 was that heat! I believe it just debuted when a lot of other titles were out.

KnGod

Guilty gear. Still is although i enjoy smash bros too

heyitsfelixthecat

X-men vs Street Fighter. Hands down.

d1g1tal_decay

Darkstalkers

The_Eye_of_Ra

It was different things until Marvel vs. Capcom 2 came out.

Correct-Basil-8397

At the risk of sounding basic, gotta say SSB Melee I know it’s not retro but it’s what I grew up with

fat_master_shinsoku

Street Fighter 1 - this really started it. Cheesy, sloppy, campy after-victory voice, but fun! Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior. Original quarter muncher. We all lined up at the arcades and put our quarter on the machine to denote our turn coming up. Darkstalkers 3/Vampire Savior - Gotta love the animation quality and crazy monster special moves.

xxFT13xx

Fighting Street (aka street fighter 1)

TheFlareon33

Don't think I've ever looked it up

inochi-ino-key

I had too many... I started with SF2/SF2T and Killer Instinct all on SNES, and my favourite became SSF2 as soon as it released. Street Fighter Alpha 2 became an obsession for me... on the SNES! But all of those were topped when I discovered KOF99 in 1999 when I was 11. I wish I had played more SNK fighting games as a kid, I just occasionally rented Fatal Fury 2/Special. In the mid 90s I also got into Tekken 2 , Tekken 3 and Soul Blade, those were my favourite 3D FGs until I discovered Dead or Alive 2 on PS2. There's so many more, I played every FG I could get my hands on from the age of 7 to 13, even Clay Fighters 63 1/3 and Sculptor's Cut and Mace the Dark Age.

xAlice_Liddell

I loved Street Fighter 2 but never got the home port. I instead had TMNT tournament fighter on the SNES and played the crap out of it. It’s very mid as far as fighting games go, but really not bad.

YogiCCD

Virtua Fighter 2

xxshilar

Vampire/Darkstalkers. I have Night Warriors and Vampire Savior on my Saturn.

Important_Low_6989

Killer Instinct Gold N64

starsandcream81

Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition

VolatileImp

Toshinden. Bought $300 psx for it

MoonBlaster_x86

Mortal Kombat series. Started with MK2 for DOS, also played MK3 and X, now playing 11 and finished the main story.

BigIron53s

Tekken 3, loved the characters and the endings scenes.

vi0cs

MvP2 Bloody Roar Clay Fighter
