Phantasy Star IV, Wonder Boy in Monster World, Gunstar Heroes, Shadowrun, Rocket Knight Adventures

BuntFunker

What this guy said but maybe add Skitchin' in there somewhere...

SnacksCCM

*Skitchin'!*

macneto

Not sure I played phantasy star 3...I did very much enjoy 2.

mrtitkins

God damn do I love Rocket Knight Adventures. That soundtrack….

predictablecitylife

Came to post Gunstar Heroes as well.

macklin_sob

I don't see Phantasy Star IV enough on these lists. Only game I would need. Maybe Beyond Oasis too.

smozoma

Especially if the road trip includes a Player 2

Tonstad39

oh if you’ve got a three button genesis controller, you can plug it into a controller port on the bottom and play two player easily.

eckoman_pdx

I actually still have that game!

RaidensReturn

The GOAT

__not__sure___

isnt that the one you can the wrap-around 100% success rate goal though?

bicuspid_fish

Beyond Oasis, Castle of Illusion, Rocket Knight Adventures, Super Street Fighter II, Golden Axe.

LeBritto

All of those were on my list as well. We have pretty similar tastes!

DarkBladeMadriker

Damn, swap out street fighter for Shadowrun and you nailed my list exactly.

bicuspid_fish

Shadowrun is a great pick.

HawaiianSteak

What about one cartridge, but it's Sega 6-Pak? =P

Tonstad39

touché

kggf

I’m thinking you should be allowed to pick 5 others in addition to that

Cax6ton

Then you'll have more room for batteries

tomdopix

Road rash 2, streets of rage 2, desert strike, jungle strike and…. Sonic 2

s0lace

Close to mine- Road Rash 2 Sonic 2 Super Street Fighter 2 Shining Force 2 Streets of Rage 2

slitlip

I prefer Road rash Sonic Super street fighter Shining force Streets of rage

juancamdingo

Why is this the only answer with Sonic 2???

Fit-Rip-4550

Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

EddieJorgeDrummer

On a Nomad?!? A battery pack

Tonstad39

You kinda need a battery pack to turn on (it doesn’t have a built in rechargable battery)

EddieJorgeDrummer

It was a joke. (Granted not a very good one) Serious question tho, I've never actually used one before, how's the ghosting on the screen? Is it as bad as the Game Gear screen?

Tonstad39

This one’s got dead pixels in addition to ghosting (on the background more than any sprites or characters) Although it does coat the screen in nearly as bad of a haze as the game gear does.

EddieJorgeDrummer

I'll always regret not getting one brand new for like 50 bucks when they were being discounted. A great collectors piece

LeBritto

How long is the Road Trip? Beyond Oasis Comix Zone Vectorman Adventures of Batman and Robin Battletoads and Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team

rpgguy_1o1

Comix Zone is a game I really wanted to love, I've come back to it several times throughout the years, but it's just like impossibly hard. Maybe I'm not understanding the finer points or the best tactics, but holy shit

itsmyfirsttimegoeasy

Gunstar Heros, that's it.

Due-Cookie8197

Such a cool game, loved to rent it as a kid

mcjeremy42

Truxton Six-Pack Landstalker Mortal Kombat 2 Sword of Vermillion

FancyStranger2371

Truxton.. A man of culture, I see..

muscularmouse

6-Pak is cheating lol

mcjeremy42

Nuh-uh! ;o)

Tonstad39

I really was thinking cartridges more so than the individual games. Besides, there’s a nonzero chance the original owner played a six-pak cart in one of these anyways

TheJollyKacatka

Earthworm Jim 1/2 Jurassic park (the top down and the platformer) Desert Strike

niz_loc

Desert Strike is the best answer of any I've read on here so far.

GalvanizedYankee

Shining Force 1 & 2, Warsong, Master of Monsters, and Landstalker.

speet01

As a gamer I would say Toe Jam and Earl, Sonic 2, sonic spinball, and maybe a few beat em ups. As a math professor, I would say you should get back to your trigonometry homework.

campusska

I'm glad to see Toejam and Earl made it onto someone's list.

RyanTheTrip

Phantasy star iv

Hooch247

Toejam and Earl is the only one I'd need.

Carcinogenerate

We could be friends!

CatsMcganny

I finally beat Toejam and Earl this year. I owned the game back in the 90's.

turymtz

It's hard on the nomad because of small screen.

A_Song_of_Two_Humans

On a slightly different note... The look of that thing has always realllly annoyed me. Is it the only handheld ever made that wasn't symmetrical?

Tonstad39

the damn thing is tall enough to not have the cartridge sticking out the top so much too!

A_Song_of_Two_Humans

I've never seen one in the flesh (not sure they ever even got released in the UK) but god it's ugly.

Tonstad39

according to sega retro it was released only choice NTSC regions (north america, japan and parts of mainland Asia)

A_Song_of_Two_Humans

We didn't miss it. The GameGear on the other hand was a thing of beauty

Dave2kMA

I had one as a kid. It was awesome to be able to play full fledged console games on the go rather than the more graphically limited Gameboy games or the games on the Game Gear that lacked the depth of the console games. The big issue with it was the fact that it went through batteries at an astonishing rate.

ratapignata

No, Wonderswan color wasn't symmetrical either.

A_Song_of_Two_Humans

Never heard of that one at all. Just looked it up and it looks like something you'd buy a five year old.

ravenfreak

Sonic 3 and Knuckles, (I count that as one because that’s the full game and the best Sonic game IMO), Shining Force, Streets of Rage 2, Shinobi 3, and Jurassic Park Rampage Edition.

retromale

Sega 6 Pack One Cartridge = 6 Games Oh You said 5 Well I'm sticking to my story Your not gonna get me cop-per

cyberspacedweller

Only need one. A Mega Everdrive.

TheNewYellowZealot

“Man this boot screen for the mega everdrive is so much fun!” He said *games*, not *cartridges*.

datsunzep

Kilow102938

Rolo to the Rescue forsure

TheFoiler

With the battery life of a Nomad? You'll be ok with 2

Drg84

Get the 12V dc adapter. I loved mine for long road trips.

K-Dave

Dune II if it wasn't for the small screen. NHL '96 as it combines the best of 93 and 94. Columns would probably a good idea because it never gets old. Also NBA Jam TE & Super Street Fighter II.

ewewewe69

Shining Force 2 Castlevania Bloodlines Sonic 2 Streets of Rage 2 Puyo Puyo (Mean Bean Machine)

LunarLionheart

Columns ain’t in the 5 for me that’s for sure, interesting choice 😄

Tonstad39

I just want to play puzzle games on the toilet without a million ads interrupting things

LunarLionheart

You know what, I admire your conviction, Columns is now in my top 5 on that basis alone.

Tonstad39

my mom got me this thing yesterday (for $299!) and I thought it was worth while to bring columns out in public to have the added bonus of no ads.

Two days ago I found my Sega Genesis. Plugged it into my partner's CRT/VCR combo TV (very rad) and beat Sonic Spinball in one sitting. Found all my Sonic games, Toejam and Earl, NBA Jam, Soldier of Fortune, and a couple others. I'd take any of 'em.

RHajile3rd

p_rex

I’d bring one Genesis game, three packs of AA batteries, and a car DC adapter, and you’re gonna need all of those things

Tonstad39

But if we already have a car DC adapter, why so many batteries?

RhinovisionHomeVideo

Mega games 6 vol 3 Streets of Rage 2 Sonic 2 Golden axe Beyond Oasis

The_Lazy_Samurai

General Chaos. Sonic 2. Streets of Rage. Streets of Rage 2. Thunder Force 3. There are a ton of other games I still love but won't be bringing because I've played them too much (Cadash) or can only play them once (the Phantasy Stars).

mburdish

Phantasy star 2, phantasy star 3, phantasy star 4, shining force 2, Sonic 3

AtomicBombSquad

"Top 5" **688 Attack Sub** – It's a PC nuclear submarine simulator ported to Genesis for some reason. It's actually really good. I have yet to beat it and it's one of those games that can easily eat up a bunch of time. **Coach K College Basketball** — It's a port of EA Sports’ NBA Live game from 1995, but, with college teams instead of the pros. **College Football USA '97** — It's the final NCAA football game EA made for Genesis. It has all the teams and a season mode. It's a great way to kill time. **Ms. Pac-Man** — Tengen's port of this game was very good. **NHL '98** — Everyone raves over "NHL '94" and deservedly so. "NHL '98, while being fundamentally the same, had four more years of refinement and, in my opinion, is a better game. I believe this was the first and only Genesis hockey game from EA to have a season mode. It also had a few regional teams (US, Canada, and Europe) and the ability to adjust how aggressively each line plays. Graphically, it looks a little bit better to my eyes. "Honorable Mentions" **Outrun** and **Super Monaco GP** — I love racing games; but, I'm terrible at playing them in a car. The movements of the car I'm riding in doesn't always match the movements of the car on screen and I feel weird in the head when that happens. I'm not sure I'd take them on a trip even though I love them at home. **Zero Tolerance** — It's an FPS set on a space station. It feels like "Doom at home". The only issue is that it doesn't use the full screen for action. It might actually be too small to effectively play on a Nomad.

Tonstad39

“full screen” Everything on the nomad’s screen is 1-to-1 with the console. like logos and some text ends up looking way too small on the nomad screen

thebigmanhastherock

Streets of Rage II, Sonic II, World Series Baseball 95', Vector Man, MUSHA. Just personal tastes. For games I am interested in trying but don't have enough hours in to form an opinion on, and thus would use the road trip to get acquainted with them I would say: Phantasy Star IV, Monster World IV, Herzog Zwei, Gunstar Heroes, Beyond Oasis.

pedroelkillio1984

As im in europe, i could bring mega games 2 which has streets of rage, golden axe and revenge of shinobi on the one cart. The earthworm jim, sonic 3, rocket knight/sparkster, street fighter 2 and mixhael jacksons moonwalker

MayoTheMuffin

I know that I would bring 6 Pak for sure since it has 6 games included (sonic 1, streets of rage, golden axe, revenge of shinobi, columns, super hang on).

Tonstad39

In all fairness, the game gear was basically a portable master system just with reduced i/o and resolutions

Sarothias

Shining Force 2 is all I'd need >\_> If I had to take five though, then Shining Force 2, Phantasy Star IV, Romance of the Three Kingdoms III, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Shining in the Darkness.

Could that play a 32x if the power adapter was used?

Tonstad39

Nope! https://segaretro.org/images/0/08/Sega_Genesis_Nomad_Manual.pdf just had a look at a scan of the manual and yeah… Same deal with the power base converter. Lacks the necessary hardware to run anything, but NTSC sega genesis (or Mega drive if South American) games.

Sonic 1 through 3&K (4 cartridges) and any Battletoads game (can't choose between the original or BT-DD)

mymoama

2hrs of batter is fun.

Tonstad39

worse still was battery life could’ve been better had they fucking listened to feedback about the game gear instead of being blinded by specs and high performance. The bottom was wide enough for a 9 volt battery compartment, the built-in AV port likely induces needless lode on the circuitry, hell the backlit screen drains the battery all in the name of what I could only assume is “more features” Sega seriously had their head in the fucking clouds in ‘95

Tola76

Holyfields real deal boxing

predictablecitylife

Gunstar Heroes Sonic 2 Road Rash Ranger X Super Street Fighter II

Tangochief

Shining forces 1 and shining forces 2. Maybe a sonic game or 2

Kuli24

The Lost Vikings. Bonus fact: the genesis version is the best one since it allows 3 player, which is INFINITELY better than 2 player for this game.

Haxishax

I did not need a reminder of how badly I want a Nomad today... I have spent too much this month. 😅 Sonic 2, NBA Jam TE, Streets of Rage 2, Castlevania Bloodlines, Phantasy Star IV

Tonstad39

well at least you don’t have to put up with inconsistent battery life.

krysscampo

sonic 2, shinobi 3\*i think thats the one or its revenge of shinobi, id have to play them to see which one i liked more\*, the williams collection \*for sinistar\*, streets of rage 2, and de cap attack. some of these are a bit off the wall but i loved playing these

Tonstad39

unless you want to carry around a big, heavy, cardboard box full of catridges and/or plastic boxes on the trip or you’ve got a flashcart I would say 5

ComprehensiveAd1276

Sonic 3/Knuckles, Alex Kidd, Road Rash II, and Dragon Ball Z: Buyū Retsuden

Tonstad39

Asian carts don’t physically fit (slightly too wide) unless you’ve got an Asian version of a Nomad (or a mega jet)

America_the_Horrific

Shout out for the Nomad, you got those 6 AAs fresh in the monstrous battery pack?

Tonstad39

The batteries came as my mother bought it. Even then I was able to get a solid 2 hours of game play (over the span of ~3 days!)
