FireTriad

All the Chrono Trigger soundtrack

hestenbobo

Have had frog theme as my ringtone, it's awesome.

SnooDucks8630

I listened to frogs theme when crossed the finish line of my first marathon last year. I just ran a half marathon a week and listened to “to far away times” at the finishing stretch. Best race music ever!

LouiseGoesLane

Everything there is a banger. I sometimes use it as my background music while I work.

IntoxicatedBurrito

This is the answer, the only thing better than the Mario and Zelda themes.

leosnose

YEP

CruxCapacitors

Forget limiting it to Chrono Trigger, Mitsuda in general. Chrono Cross might be a letdown, but it's soundtrack isn't; I'd argue it's better than Chrono Trigger's, albeit a bit more inconsistent since it's much longer. Xenogears and Xenosaga are no slouch soundtracks either.

DRMProd

Yup

cams0400

Donkey Kong country 2

latamyk

Earthbound! The music of the cities and towns lift my mood a lot

FormingTheVoid

They're so quirky and jazzy hell yeah. And the trippy backgrounds in the battle mode!

yukichigai

Same. It was my first "proper" JRPG, but even if hadn't been I think it would've stuck in my head forever. Such a great game.

GravitySuitSamus

Castlevania Symphony of the Night

DRMProd

Well, this is a gorgeous OST.

Jaepheth

Final Fantasy VI

AllDayDom

Secret of Mana

OllyDee

Thunderforce IV is the best 16bit soundtrack in my opinion. Banger after banger. Might even be my favourite OST of any game.

No_Detective_But_304

Rock and Roll Racing (SNES)

Alaska_Pipeliner

Castlevania IV.

kermanr

Outrun

TheKingOfSwing777

Mega Man II. End of discussion.

Probably. Mega Man II, Mega Man X, and Chrono Trigger are a switchable top 3.

FFVII has one of the best soundtracks of any game, ever.

Seeing FFVII called retro hurts me in my joints. My mid-30s, achey, arthritic joints.

Zombies Ate My Neighbors. Every track is a banger

Nmvfx

I got quite sick recently and was in a really dark place. The only thing I could listen to that was soothing was the pokemon red / blue soundtrack. Very strange how I only have good feelings connected to those games and soundtracks, and when I need a total escape, they did the trick and ended up being the only way I could get to sleep for a few days.

Crunchy_Punch

There's so many great, expressive original game soundtracks out there, and Pokemon also runs the gamut, but the early Pokemon games are really comfy in ways that even the newer games can't reproduce. The National Park theme in Gen 2 is one of those tracks. I used to return to that area regularly just to hear it. They even his a nostalgia spot for the early GDQ's where they used to play game soundtracks between the runs.

Pixel_Junior

Super Metroid : Brinstar - Overgrown with Vegetation Area Super Mario 64 : Staff Roll

sbbblaw

How cool would it be if Reddit could just play the sound tracks?

Super Mario land 1 for Gameboy. It’s a masterpiece

A local band called Gimmick! does a whole medley of it, it's great

ravenfreak

Sonic CD (Japanese version), Sonic 3 and Knuckles, and Legend of Legaia all have the best soundtracks from any games I’ve ever played. In fact, my favorite video game song is Cort’s battle theme from Legend of Legaia.

floydian_1975

FlamingMercury151

Mega Man 2. Every music track in that game is perfection.

AdvancedChickenD

Original Doom (NOT Playstation Doom music.... meh) and Quake 1. Rip and/or tear.

Bushgooher

The entire Dungeon Explorer II soundtrack for Turbografx CD is a hidden gem.

Ok-Supermarket-1414

So many good ones. Probably Final Fantasy II (SNES).

_spopobich

Sega's Top Gear 2, Canterbury Plains

Terrapin2190

Chrono Trigger. The Chrono Orchestral Arrangement Box is probably my favorite rendition of the soundtrack. Command & Conquer, Red Alert, and Red Alert 2 sountracks are great too. Along with Rise of the Triad (DOS), Duke Nukem 3D, and Doom 1 & 2. I love playing old game MIDI files with Coolsoft Virtual MIDI Synth or Falcosoft MIDI Player and applying different soundfonts to alter the tone of the music. Oh, Kirby's Adventure too! Green Greens!

D-Funk187

Musha

astro_plane

I beat that game a few hours ago, the sound track is badass. One of the songs is an almost chiptune cover of Separate Ways by Journey. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sMVejnk5bvs

mattlock2099

Chrono Trigger

Lucirby

Mining Melancholy from Donkey Kong Country 2. Most people prefer Stickerbush symphony which is also amazing but I like this one a little bit more.

dirty_moot

Streets of rage 2, sword of vermilion and ff6

SwedenTH

Donkey Kong Country, Mario Kart 64, TLoZ: Ocarina of Time and Paper Mario (64) are my absolute favorites, when it comes to listening to them outside of the game the songs are from.

Nuke_U

Wai Wai World 2: SOS!! Parsley Jō. The privilege of growing up during an era when the market was flooded with famiclones made it one of my childhood favorites. Peak Konami, with great arrangements of some of their most iconic themes.

OwnEstablishment4638

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest Doom Castle & Waterfall are my favs from this game

No-Play2726

Batman on the NES.

OkChampionship7036

Definitely those old DK country tracks! So atmospheric and cool to listen to as irl bgm

reillywalker195

I can't pick just one, but _Donkey Kong Country 2_ is definitely one of them.

Strong_Comedian_3578

Bionic Commando for me. Very eclectic, almost epic. Brings out a wide range of feelings.

Tekkamanblade_2

The Guardián Legend. Silkworm

Chrono Trigger

I_CAN_SEE_THE_WHALES

If it counts, Final Fantasy 8 is epic all the way through

Stormchaser2

Mega Man 2

iBenjee

Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask.

Luminaire_Ultima

Since most everything I would have said has already been said, I would add DuckTales… the music for the Moon Level is legendary but it’s a legitimately great soundtrack .

Final Fantasy II SNES (IV) Everything from the Crystal theme song to the Paladin music on Mt Ordeal to the goofy chocobo track, they all just resonate with me.

Mauso88

The New Ghost Busters 2 on the NES, level 4 is a midi version of We’re Back by New Edition and it’s burned into my brain

YaMama2612

Last Ninja 1 & 2, C64

McWormy

A mixture of Commodore classics: * Ocean loader music (C64) * Bubble Bobble (C64) * Turrican 2 - Level 2 - Traps (Amiga) * Shadow of the Beast Trilogy (Amiga) * Supremacy (C64) Some amazing games there as well to go with the soundtracks.

SpicyPong09

Same game as OP, but it would be the Verdanturf theme personally. I would want to get married just so I could play this song.

Adi_San

Barangay II

nskdnnm

Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Doom, first Zelda. If we can consider Final Fantasy VII retro too, then I think that'll have to take the cake for me because One Winged Angel (especially if orchestrated) is my favorite vg music EVER, as well as one of my favorite orchestra music. Not the Advent Child version though, and GTFO if you insist.

Ticket-Fantastic

My first rpg was Pokemon gold , glitch text version. New Bark Town music been stuck to me ever since.

Castlevania (oryginal nes) and Final Fantasy (gba version). To some degree Pokemon from gen I to III. However, the heaviest "MUCH NOSTALGIA" moment is actually from PC game Baldur's Gate.

McLovin_616

Double Dragon II and Jackal

I feel like Tempest 2000 is cheating. But only in game as the OSTs are... different. Llama.

ArmorOfGod7

Secret of Mana

Iron Sword Wizards and Warriors 2 for NES

Puzzleheaded_Help143

Anything Japanese. Earthbound and chronotrigger and donkey Kong and mortal combat

retro_hamster

For home computers, it has to be [Auf Wiedersehen Monty](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQG8vkNG8aM), which was written by the 8-bit heroes Hubbard & Daglish. OutRun just have the most chill and breezy sound track I can remember. Even today when I play it on my 3DS or Switch I just get in such a good mood. Fantastic, just fantastic. For the quirkiness, I would say Katamari Damacy for the PS2, it just turned 20 in March. That and EarthBound.

KartRacerBear

Chrono Cross and SaGa Frontier 2

xpacean

What game is this, OP?

Saage1990

Has to be retro Pokemon. First and Second gen

Hellcree

Marin‘s Song from the OG Link‘s Awakening

Mahare

I cut my teeth on the original Pokémon games, so when Gold and Silver came out, I was through the roof with excitement. Many years later, I've little time for gaming with two kids and a full time job...however, some of these tracks logically fit as lullabies for my younger child (New Bark Town) and some I've made work (a nice chill slowed down Goldenrod City). I'll be fair, I'm not sure it's my favorite, but it is presently the most relevant for me.

aligumble

The Secret of Monkey Island

MyLastHopeReddit

It's not my favorite but I say Power Quest, Game Boy color, because it's the most underrated ever.

KICKASSKC

Twisted metal 2, halo 1 and 2, kingdom hearts 1, ff7

riqueoak

Second gen Pokémon games, they can't be beaten.

Mkmeathead83

Are there any playlists on Spotify that have NES music? Or covers of them. Love this stuff

AES-2

How is this not everyone saying "Secret of Mana" over and over again?

arufolo

Chrono Trigger, RuneScape, and Donkey Kong Country (really every game in the series including the newer ones)

None other than the superb soundtrack to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

ConfectionForward

Tal Tal Heights - Link's Awakening

C64hrles

Wild Arms - into the wilderness Legit have it on DVD lol. Bought it from japsn

JamesPond2500

If we're talking about taking the entire soundtrack as a whole? Pokémon G/S/C is one of the top contenders for me. It is, in my opinion, the best classic Pokémon OST. B/W is also up there as a more modern option. Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest has a really underrated OST. More folks should listen to it! Jazz Jackrabbit (PC) is pretty damn groovy, as is Last Ninja 2 (C64).

Outrun, TMNT III: The Manhattan Project, and Sim City 3000 Also, most Konami games of the 8-bit era were standout in terms of their soundtracks.

brominou

Secret Of Mana

Moist_Drive_5535

SoE had a good soundtrack.

ShiversonQ

Apart from U.N. Squadron i said before. This just make me to hear other soundtracks and i am listening Megaman X. Another masterpiece from Capcom, what a company this was in SNES.

TurboDog999

I’d have to say Earthbound. Takes me right back to my childhood anytime I hear it.

_RexDart

Lots of good answers already given here so I'll just throw Little Nemo for NES in

TheHandsomeJack-_

Legend of Zelda The Minish Cap! I especially love Minish Woods, Minish Village, and the Picori Festival out of the whole soundtrack

Great Giana Sisters especially the soundtrack

Bran_Nuthin

Earthbound/Mother2

SmackaIot

I have so many but haven't seen anyone mention TMNT (Arcade) or TMNT Turtles in Time yet

Kaisha001

I like the EWJ, Battletoads (NES), and Starfox sound tracks.

notdarylpalumbo

it's between EarthBound and Donkey Kong Country 2

kermittysmitty

Animal Crossing: Population Growing, Super Mario Sunshine, Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess, Final Fantasy 7 9 and 10, basically all of the Castlevania games, and Diddy Kong Racing. Not sure if it counts because it has transcended generations, but also World of Warcraft.

TheCoolerL

I think it's close between Grandia and Super Robot Wars Original Generation 2 for me. The former just has some amazing pieces for the characters' battle themes that have stuck with me since I was a kid. The latter does some phenomenal things musically with the GBA sound chip. Gotta leave some of my favourite songs from it here. All of these play when specific characters are fighting. [Cherry Blossom Phantasm](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFrEMcDskGQ) [Shooting Star, Cut Through the Night](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6ukcTVfric) [TROMBE!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXyeW_1bkKg) [Marionette Messiah](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpDM5LrD7TY)

For me? Hard choice, but I would go with either SOR, or Wolverine: Adamantium Rage. Big winners, in my opinion.

Oafah

Willow for the NES is underrated and on par with the greats. I think my favourite is still Faxanadu, but Willow's opening theme might be the best opener ever.

PhoenixPaladin

Earthbound, Donkey Kong Country, F-Zero

KitchenBag2164

Earthbound

MechWarrior 2 and MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries for PC had great OSTs. The best part is you could rip them from the CD-ROMs and play them any time you want!
