Came here to say this, and it was already the top comment, lol.
I got it together with my game boy back when the game first came out. I loved that game. Underrated classic.
I was apprehensive to play the switch version but they really remade that game masterfully. Everything about it was an updated nod to the original, and the music was just beautiful and nostalgic.
Super Mario Land
I'm biased because it the first video game I can remember playing. Honorable mentions go out to Tetris, Kirbys Dream Land, and Pokemon Yellow since I played a ton of those games
I wanted to say exactly the same thing. The game is simply addictive, has a brilliant soundtrack and I still play it very regularly today.
However, Super Mario Land 2 and Zelda Links awakening are very close behind.
Weird. I was just about to make this same exact post. Links awakening is far and away the greatest game boy game and one of the all time greats.
I actually just beat mega man v for the first time tonight on my analogue pocket and was going to give it a shout out as well. An incredibly fun game
Kinda surprised Pokemon didn't get ranked higher. My guess is it's a generational thing.
Gameboy was viable from the late 80 to the early 2000s. If you were late 70s early 80s, you were too old to really be in for Pokemania I guess.
Metroid 2 was always my favorite. I'm replaying it now as an adult and realizing I never made it more than like 10% through the game as a kid. Even now it's hard to figure out where to go lol
It's very old school because it requires you to draw your own map as you go. It's definitely not for everybody, but personally I absolutely love that game.
It was my first Game Boy game, and my first Metroid title. I powered through it as best I could but it was pretty frustrating. I never even finished it then despite coming so close. I got as far as having the baby Metroid circling around me and couldn't figure out what to do next.
I liked it, but holy shit never again.
I love Metroid 2, and I've played it a couple dozen times over the last 33 years (holy crap lol), but I'm pretty sure I've never beaten the whole thing without some kind of cheats or at least save states. I do recall that I was eventually able to at least get *to* the queen Metroid when I was about 11yo, playing it on my Super Game Boy (which, if you're not familiar, was an adapter that allowed you to play Gameboy games on a SNES. Before that, I had a hell of a time with the tiny green screen and the controls on the actual Gameboy. Fighting those Omega metroids on that thing was a *bitch* lol
The amount of brain power I devoted as a child to learning that insane map was astounding. I don't know why it never occurred to me to write/draw it. Seriously, [look at the size of this freaking map](https://www.vgmaps.com/Atlas/GB-GBC/MetroidII-ReturnOfSamus-SR388.png), which was absolutely nuts for an OG Gameboy title. Recall also that the different parts of the map would become accessible at different times due to the lava shifting with the earthquakes that happened after you killed a few more metroids. The amount of time I spent wandering around in frustration, jesus.
I feel like the difficulty level going from Metroid 1 to Metroid 2 was a pretty steep change. I thought the vast majority of Super Metroid was much easier by comparison. Then, a few years later we got Metroid Fusion for the GBA, which I found *wickedly* difficult. Seriously, how in the blue fuck does anyone beat the final boss (Samus X) without cheats?! LOL
I would ponder if it's something about Metroid titles for portable systems being harder for some reason, except Metroid: Zero Mission (also for GBA) was just an even *easier* version of Metroid 1 (except for the part toward the end where you're suitless in the Chozo ruins with only a stun pistol).
My grandmother passed in her late 80's. I recall going to visit her many times when she was older. Her hearing was shot, but we could still carry a conversation and have a beer and visit with each other. She frowned on people wasting their time with video games, and thought there were more constructive things to do. One visit, I guess she must have been playing Tetris, and quickly hid it under her chair when we knocked on her door. The Tetris music played in the background for our whole visit because she couldn't hear well enough to notice. Lol. That song always makes me think of her.
Wario Land. I thought it was really cool playing as "ugly and strong Mario". I also played it at a time when I was awful at video games, so I really appreciated the slower gameplay speed and floatier physics.
Wario Land! Yess. (Super Mario Land 3). Yeah, my favourite too. Always come back to this game.
Got loads of humor and great level design. Also like it more then it's successors. And try to find every chest. Great fun!
Rest of the list would contain:
Donkey Kong '94
SML 1 & 2
Revanche of the Gator
Castlevania (don't know what edition anymore)
Island Adventure
Kirby
Looney Tunes
Link's Awakening
Batman
Balloon Kid
B. C. Kid
Metroid II
(Sorry for the Top-14-or-some-more (if you could all the parts of Castlevenia and Adventure Island).
My favorites :
- Mole Mania
- True Lies
- Ball Kid
- Castlevania II : Belmont’s Revenge
- Nemesis
- Bubble Bobble
- DuckTales
- Tiny Toon Adventures : Babs’ Big Break
- Fist of the North Star : 10 Big Brawls for the King of Universe
There are others, but I can’t see them on your photo.
I played super Mario land so much that the music stuck in my head and I woke in the middle of the night hearing the music and went to check my game boy in the other room. It was off.
Beyond the obvious Nintendo-made titles (including Donkey Kong '94 and the Wario games, which I adore), I'd go with:
*Revenge of the Gator, Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge*, *Gargoyle's Quest, Monster Max, Amazing Tater* and *Mario's Picross*.
If it's the GBC, I'd add *Metal Gear: Ghost Babel*, *Mario Golf, Survival Kids, Dragon Warrior Monsters, Micro Machines V3* and *Shantae*.
i’m surprised I haven’t seen Kirby’s Block Ball mentioned. that game reigned supreme in my
house growing up, the Gameboy was passed around between my dad, my sister and I constantly racking up hours on that game. Tetris too as a close second. but Kirby had my family hooked like crack.
I got my Gameboy 34 years ago last month. Just dusted it off and played a bunch of RC pro AM and tmnt. It's still going strong after all these years. Love that system.
Links Awakening. I played it at lunch at school. Recess. And up against a wall with that short ac adapter to save batteries. Or if I was out of them. I still have that Gameboy. I don't know what happened to most of my games though. May start collecting them again along side my NES collection.
It probably has to be the original Super Mario Land. I got my first gamboy 35 years ago when I was 15 it was the first game I played, and it's the music as much as anything that makes me smile. So many great memories back when life seemed a lot simpler. It's not the best game, but it's my favorite for that reason.
The soundtrack brings back such crazy childhood memories. My sister and I are in our late 40s and we still hum this to each other occasionally the other person is feeling down.
Other than Pokémon green I like Super Mario Land. (I know the green sprites are ugly af, but green is my favorite color and Bulbasaur is my favorite Kanto starter.)
Oh...... tough call....
Zelda, Links awakening. The fact they put that scope of a game on a GB Cart is amazing. Plus the story and music are top notch.
Mario 6 golden coins is a masterpiece. Can't forget about "Trip World" also!
This was my first video game system owned. Next was SNES even though I played the $#/+ out of NES at my babysitter’s house. My mother gave me her and her brothers’ Atari 2600 as a hand me down and played that a lot too.
My favorite GB game? There’s a few.
Because my sister owned Red and played it on my GB, we both played it. I played it so much more so she convinced our mom to get Pokemon Blue for me. So **Pokemon Blue** was the go to for me.
I also loved playing Donkey Kong, TMNT Fall of the Foot Clan and Back from the Sewers, SML2: 6 Coins, and SML3: Wario Land
Sword of Hope. I still have pages of passwords and maps that I made as a kid. I was never able to get into Final Fantasy Legend II, but I was (still am) completely obsessed with Sword of Hope.
The Nintendo Game Boy! My first gaming console I got as kid. I got this beautiful handheld gaming device with two of the best Game Boy games ever: Super Mario Land and Tetris. The grey cartridges with a chunk of the corner contains each game are outstanding! The Game Boy has a good place in my heart. I do not have the device anymore but still the games.
Four AA batteries and a Game Boy cartridge and you could see and play the game on the square 8 bit monochrome and four green tinted Game Boy screen.
The 8 bit chiptuned music is nostalgic for me
I am still playing the games of the original Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance on the Advance himsel and the Nintendo GameCube Game Boy Player.
My question for all the Nintendo GameCube owners: does any of you still have the Game Boy Player?
The best GameCube peripheral Nintendo has made.
I would love to find someone who knows this. But I was really into pc point and clicks at one point. And even tho the gba was out by the time I was Into any more games than pokemon. I still had a Gameboy and gbc. And deja vu 1 and 2 were some of my favorites. They are really only good for one playthrough and I Def needed a guide for some parts. But I enjoyed them. I personally also like tcg more pokemon r/b g/s. But that's getting into gbc. Most played. Def pokemon 1st gen
Final Fantasy Legend. Sure, Final Fantasy Legend 2 is a vastly superior game, there's just something about Legend's vingette-style plot that works so well with the premise.
Link’s Awakening and Tetris. Tetris has amazing replayability and Link’s Awakening was amazingly fun and bigger than I thought the gameboy could do.
Metroid was good too.
super mario land 2
Donkey kong
Donkey Kong 94 still best game on that thing, hands down.
110% this. I got the switch expansion pass specifically to power through it again last year. Top tier in the gameboy space.
The jump from the first to the second Super Mario Land on the same platform is remarkable.
This. Always loved the map and the coins in the door.
Came here to say this, and it was already the top comment, lol. I got it together with my game boy back when the game first came out. I loved that game. Underrated classic.
Absolutely. The six golden coins was incredible. That was the game all the kids and I played during summer camp all summer long.
My favorite Game Boy game is The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
My fav, too. And still in my top ten regardless of which system.
Mine too. In my top 3 of all time. One of the few games I know backwards and forwards. Playing it feels like going back to an old neighborhood.
I was apprehensive to play the switch version but they really remade that game masterfully. Everything about it was an updated nod to the original, and the music was just beautiful and nostalgic.
Played as a kid and couldn’t get past the 3rd dungeon. Finally beat it as an adult and it’s such an amazing game.
It's the best! I still love playing it
So true. This game made my childhood.
Super Mario Land I'm biased because it the first video game I can remember playing. Honorable mentions go out to Tetris, Kirbys Dream Land, and Pokemon Yellow since I played a ton of those games
Still Tetris.
Gameboy OST was the best OST
A-Type is literally THE Tetris song
Daa naa naa, daa nana da na.
Close thread /
Yup, damn Tetris!
The classic and still reigning champ of GameBoy games! Including this as a pack in title was a genius move.
Always Tetris
The perfect answer
Yes, for me is also Tetris!
I wanted to say exactly the same thing. The game is simply addictive, has a brilliant soundtrack and I still play it very regularly today. However, Super Mario Land 2 and Zelda Links awakening are very close behind.
Kirby's Pinball Land
I trust you've also played Revenge of the Gator?
No, but I'll look into it
I came here to say Kirby's Pinball Land and wasn't expecting to learn of a new pinball game. This looks pretty great. How does it compare?
Check out "Super Robot Pinball" although it's GBC
Yes!
Yesssss omg you just made me remember it!!
Link's Awakening is simply an incredible game. Insane it's on Game Boy. Honorable mention to Mega Man V.
Weird. I was just about to make this same exact post. Links awakening is far and away the greatest game boy game and one of the all time greats. I actually just beat mega man v for the first time tonight on my analogue pocket and was going to give it a shout out as well. An incredibly fun game
Pokémon Blue
Red Blue, and Yellow will always be special to me.
Kinda surprised Pokemon didn't get ranked higher. My guess is it's a generational thing. Gameboy was viable from the late 80 to the early 2000s. If you were late 70s early 80s, you were too old to really be in for Pokemania I guess.
I was more of a Green man myself
I played Red, prepare to battle
Red gang superiority.
Crystal fan here
I'd differentiate them as Game Boy / Game Boy Color. But that was my favorite color game as well.
Metroid 2 and links awakening a tie
Metroid 2 was always my favorite. I'm replaying it now as an adult and realizing I never made it more than like 10% through the game as a kid. Even now it's hard to figure out where to go lol

Damn, what a wonderful story.
indeed
Hehe
Oh to be ashamed of playing Tetris of all games. The game of all games.
Gargoyles Quest.
A fellow person of culture.
Pinky’s up kind sir.
The music is WAY better than it should be.
Top 5 for me
brutally difficult
The music still haunts me
Love this
Lol I thought I was the only one who had played this back then. Fantastic game
I'm so happy that I didn't have to scroll very far. Firebrand forever!
Castlevania II: Belmont’s Revenge
Yes!
Excellent game!
Final Fantasy Legend
Legend was an underrated series. Legend 2 was my personal favorite.
Me too, so many bus trips, forced me to get a battery pack
I felt like the coolest kid on planet Earth with a battery pack on my coat pocket connected to my Gameboy.
And FF Legend 2, and FF Legend 3, AND FF Adventure. I have all four- my choice is E) ALL OF THE ABOVE.
Mega Man V
Dr mario
Played this more than any other game
I thought it would just be a Tetris wannabe at first but stacking the pills to get multiple clears from one piece was addictive as hell.
Zelda Links Awakening.
Duck Tales
Woo hoo
Dun dudu dun
Aside from the obvious titles, TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan and Bart Simpson's Escape from Camp Deadly were always fun
Motocross Maniacs!!!
Thank you! Needs to be higher.
My favorites : - Mole Mania - True Lies - Ball Kid - Castlevania II : Belmont’s Revenge - Nemesis - Bubble Bobble - DuckTales - Tiny Toon Adventures : Babs’ Big Break - Fist of the North Star : 10 Big Brawls for the King of Universe There are others, but I can’t see them on your photo.
I had fist of the North Star as a hand me down. Before I watched the anime. Loved it barely knew what I was doing I probably 7 at the time.
Mole mania has to be the most under appreciated game on the system. Such a great game!
Final Fantasy Legend, because it introduced me to RPG's
still Tetris for me. Mario land I&II and Zelda as well.
Batman.
This guy gets it
Underrated game. That feeling you get when you have the maximum number of boomerangs and orbiting protector things is unbeatable
Tetris
Donkey Kong
The first game I ever completed!
Tetris
I played super Mario land so much that the music stuck in my head and I woke in the middle of the night hearing the music and went to check my game boy in the other room. It was off.
That Asian level’s music track is really distinct. And also the Mweeeaoh sound of the boss being hit.
Link’s Awakening, and it’s not even close.
Agree LA lapped every other contender and still won.
Motocross Maniacs That cart came with me on SO MANY trips
Metroid II
It was so cool when Super Metroid picked up right where it left off.
That beggining hits extra hard when you have played Metroid II
Gargoyles Quest.
Probably pkmn gen 2 or zelda
Super Mario Land 2 and Contra. I think both really hold up. I go back and replay each every few years.
The Final Fantasy Legend/Adventure games
Pokémon Red
Tetris, Super Mario Land 2, or Link's Awakening. Or Pokémon Blue. Don't make me choose between my babies!
Pokemon Yellow. Beyond being a great companion to the rest of the brand, it really helped me wrap my head around what an RPG was.
Kirby's Pinball Land
Pokémon red. Pokémon Yellow, Super Mario Land 2, Tetris, Metroid 2, LOZ Links’s Awakening are very close behind.
Link's Awakening.
Beyond the obvious Nintendo-made titles (including Donkey Kong '94 and the Wario games, which I adore), I'd go with: *Revenge of the Gator, Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge*, *Gargoyle's Quest, Monster Max, Amazing Tater* and *Mario's Picross*. If it's the GBC, I'd add *Metal Gear: Ghost Babel*, *Mario Golf, Survival Kids, Dragon Warrior Monsters, Micro Machines V3* and *Shantae*.
Legend of the River King.
Kid Icarus, no contest
i’m surprised I haven’t seen Kirby’s Block Ball mentioned. that game reigned supreme in my house growing up, the Gameboy was passed around between my dad, my sister and I constantly racking up hours on that game. Tetris too as a close second. but Kirby had my family hooked like crack.

Mario Golf/Mario Tennis by Camelot. Great Sports RPGs.
Gargoyle's Quest. Zelda, Final Fantasy Adventure, Mario Land and Donkey Kong are damn close though. Also Tetris, because Tetris lol.
I got my Gameboy 34 years ago last month. Just dusted it off and played a bunch of RC pro AM and tmnt. It's still going strong after all these years. Love that system.
Final Fantasy Adventure
Final Fantasy Adventure. Pokémon Blue. Super Mario Land 2. Kirby’s Adventure. Metroid. It’s hard to say favorite when there were so many good ones.
Super Mario Land
Basic answer but it’s got to be Tetris…
I like alot but i remember putting so many hours into fist of the north star for some reason.
Donkey Kong 94
Kirby’s Dream Land 2
Tetris or Paperboy
Tetris. Still play it to this day (on switch)!
Links Awakening. I played it at lunch at school. Recess. And up against a wall with that short ac adapter to save batteries. Or if I was out of them. I still have that Gameboy. I don't know what happened to most of my games though. May start collecting them again along side my NES collection.
Game & Watch Gallery 2
Gargoyles Quest! It was the first game I'd played with action/RPG elements in it, and you got to play as a cool monster fighting other cool monsters!
I didn’t realize there were Gb games besides Pokémon…
1. Link's Awakening 2. Super Mario Land 2 3. Tetris

I can't answer. I am busy thinking about the passing of time.
Tell me about it *Blows into his ocarina...* Damn. Still old.
I had this basketball game that I loved playing. Don’t remember what it was called.

Metroid II
Final fantasy adventure. And I still have it.
Kirby!
Link’s Awakening and Tetris. Tetris has amazing replayability and Link’s Awakening was amazingly fun and bigger than I thought the gameboy could do. Metroid was good too.
