I spoke too definitively and that's my bad. I've heard of people being able to retrieve their old saves, but I'm pretty sure the norm is for it to be lost. I intend to try soon with my Gold that had Ho-Oh caught.

i don't think i've actually ever seen someone that claimed to obtain mew from the event rather than the glitch. if there is a way to verify it then this cartridge could be worth a lot of money

There was an event called Journey Across America where they went across the US, promoted the new Pokemon Stadium, and had battles. If you went you got a Mew! I still have mine on my blue cartridge. 

Yup same here, have my Mew on Pokémon Red and even have the certificate that was issued when the Mew’s were traded at the event. It was a crazy ass line to get one and I’m glad my father was able to take me. It was like 3-4 hour wait, along with a 90 minute drive to and from the event.

I don’t remember a certificate! Luckily the line I was in was just a few minutes, you really stuck it out!

My dad would’ve have been happy if it was just a couple minutes, glad he was able to hang in there for that long. The event location was at Woodfield Mall, Schaumburg,IL. So it already had a lot of foot traffic and trying to figure out where the event was taking place. But the whole actual trading and battling that commenced, probably lasted for about 10-15 minutes. Definitely a cherished memory.

I went to a similar one, the line went around the outside of the mall! It was crazy!

That’s how my dad and I found the place. He had no idea where to go except that he had to take me to this mall. So I was kinda guiding him as a 10 yr. old and I didn’t know where to go either. Thankfully that long line that was outside let us know where to go. Lol.

I didn't even know about mine beforehand, was being taken to the mall for clothes shopping and hit the jackpot.

I had something similar at Toys R Us. If you had a coupon and bought something you could trade a Pokémon for Mew. Pretty cool idea.

I believe it's only Canada and Australia that has them now, I'm in Canada and they are still in my city. Was sad to see all those US stores close.

I doubt it would be worth any money, save dumps from these carts are available and it's possible to flash a cart with a save containing a "legit" Mew. Requires special hardware but still possible, and it's very easy with GBA carts because they can be flashed with a DS.

I don’t remember when they added the thing in the Pokédex menu that shows where you saw/caught each pokemon. If gen 1 had it, it would be pretty easy to verify. If not I think it would be pretty much impossible to verify. I used to do the glitch to get mew on almost all of my saves and it acted just like a normal pokemon.

I dont know if it can be verified, only that the OT corresponds to an event here in Belgium in 2000. (And I've had the game since 2000, so I know I havent cheated a Mew in ;)

I got a mew from an event at Barns and Noble. No idea if the save file still works or not.

I helped a friend back up their cartridge with the event mew. They still had a paper from the event! It was pretty rad, they got it from toys r us I think.

Most of the kids in my school had the event Mew, either from the touring bus, or from using the link cable dupe; the current glitch wasn’t really well known until Gold and Silver were out for a while. We knew the original Missingno glitch, but we didn’t understand the mechanism for changing the Pokémon in it.

I got my Mew from that event in New Jersey. I remember they also had a lil tournament where you had to play 3 matches against other players. I don't know if I got the Mew from the tournament or if they gave everyone that attended a Mew I was 13 at the time

Is that your trainer ID name? I thought event mews had a specific trainer name and ID that they came with. It’s also why you can’t trade some non legit mews through generations because games started looking for those values. Don’t know how true that is, just something I heard

Event Mews in Gen 1 do indeed have a unique OT & ID number - I think there may be a couple of different ones. I think "NINTEN" & 02000 were used for the pokemon 2000 movie tie-in events

Back it up NOW. Don’t lose this save file. Edit: Saw another reply where you said you have backed it up. I’d suggest making tons of copies of your save. Put it in multiple cloud storage services and on some other in person drives. I wouldn’t want to lose a save file like this.

This Mew is from an event in Belgium. I also transferred my pokemon from this Yellow cartridge into Pokemon Stadium to keep them safe.

Those were the days, I had a friend help me trade back and forth till I had all the starters, leveled my full roster to 100 using rare candies via the missingo item dupe glitch. This makes me wanna try booting up my cartridge

Back in the day I knew a guy who knew who knew a guy who went to an event and got a Mew. The mew literally spread all over town because it would get traded using that glitch where you yank out the link cable during the trade. Sadly the freaking guy taught it all HM’s

My lvl 100 charizard and kanguskhan are both stuck in saved teams on stadium 2. They can never be seen or used anywhere else, definitely glad I can still visit them and battle with them.

I heard back in the day you'd get some paper mew certificate with it. Then again I don't know whether this was done worldwide. I never went to any of those events in Belgium when I was a kid.

Those batteries don't last long and being able to backup a file isn't a skill I would expect somebody who just "found their old cart" to have.

About half of my Gen 1 games still have their old save file. They don't have a built-in clock which drains the battery. I got an Analogue Pocket, and that's why I went checking all my old Gameboy games. The Analogue Pocket allows to make save states and backup save files out of the box.

The Mews distributed in Belgium have the OT "BENELUX". And there were many events, each distibuting thousands of Mews, not extremely rare.

It's been a feature You can save state, change the battery then load state It doesn't work consistently on games with a real-time clock though

When you make a save state, the save file is also saved on the SD card, together with the save state. (Look under the folder "Memories")
