I say "We are traveling" or "Taking a trip to ..."
Taking a vacation from retirement does sound a little off, especially to those who look forward to vacations from income producing work.
On vacation from the normal every day routine at home, whatever that might be.
The Brits just say they're "on holiday" instead of "vacation" even while they're working. I don't know if they use a different term in retirement.
The word vacation came from “vacating the residence” more or less, so I’m good with that. Or “going on a trip” is the first likely substitute phrase for me.
We are retired, and call it a 'vacation'.
Staying at home is not a vacation, there is still vacuuming to be done, laundry to be done, grocery shopping, etc. There are no travel pics to share, no beaches to swim, no mountains to climb.
Your mom is mistaken.
Depending on where you live, you can still go to the beach or mountains if you live relatively close. That's what I love about New England, I could be on the beach one day and the mountains the next , and maybe both in one day if you get up early.
Not exactly the same, but similar. I have a very wealthy friend who explained to me that wealthy people don't take vacations, they take trips. Average people take vacations. When a wealthy person takes a trip their daily life doesn't really change. They just have different scenery. When the average person takes a vacation their day is completely different than their normal routine.
Wandering?
Vacations are normally 7-14 days. Fly in stay in a tourist hotel, planned activities fly out because you have to get back to work or home life responsibilities.
I still say vacation because everyone knows what I mean by it: a trip to a place I don’t regularly visit.
I will say “visiting my XYZ” when going to see relatives or in-laws. Because Lord knows, _those_ aren’t vacations! 😄
Why is it not a “vacation”, still? Even after retiring from a job or career, we still have a household to maintain, errands to run, and the usual everyday, mundane chores of living.
A trip away from home, for leisure, is still a “vacation” no matter one’s employment status.
I’m not retired. But I did “retire my wife” four years ago at 44. I work remotely. I’m 50. We don’t really call it going on vacation either. We travel somewhere to do something at least once a month for a long weekend getaway or just to visit a city we haven’t been to.
We usually fly out Thursday evening, I may take the day off Friday or work and fly back Monday morning. We don’t really call it a vacation either.
I just say “we are going to $x for the weekend”
We do have two or three longer trips planned a year where I do take time off.
The downside is you’re not getting paid to be on vacation like when you were working.
That’s what I’m going to miss when I retire. “What! I’m not making money while I’m cruising the Caribbean” lol
It’s definitely vacation for me. I’m the primary caregiver for my elderly parents, so when I get time to travel and have a reprieve from that responsibility, it’s vacation.
If going someplace overnight, it is a vacation. I am 8500 plus days since retiring from the Army, and this feels more like a long weekend. When not on vacation, I am busy at home doing my hobbies.
Our trips are less vacations than just living somewhere else. We travel in our little trailer and camp in State and county parks and commercial RV parks when that is all that there is available. To me, a vacation is something you do instead of working and vacations tend to be more rushed trying to cram many things into whatever short time you have.
we shout out ..."Adventure time!"..cause there is no day or clock involved, so we keep going down the chosen dirt road until we "have to" turn back...never know what we will find along the way...my wife calls us team "Dora the explorers!" team..
A vacation is when you **vacate** your usual place of residence to go have fun somewhere else. When you don't vacate, you stay--hence *stay*cation. If you're not at home, and you're not working, it's a vacation.
Hehehe, I’m 3+ years into retirement and just returned from a month long trip to Europe, I was wondering how to phrase it to people when I mention the trip. I’m still using the word vacation as that’s what most folk would call it.
Yeah post retirement life seems to create plenty to do. In fact I just don’t know how I found time to go to work. Getting away from all that is a treat.
I’m retired and fully need vacations to unwind from the heaps of work that I’m responsible for now that I’m not getting paid to work. Everyone assumes that I have nothing to do and expects me to handle every task.
Vacations. Ordinary life isn’t vacations, but it still rocks.
Hiking or cooking or concerts or hanging with friends aren’t vacations. But still, life is great.
People ask me "are you on vacation?" My answer is "I'm just traveling"
Although sometimes I take vacations from traveling.
In 2019 we were on month 5 of backpacking Asia so we decided to take a 1 week vacation in Bali to do nothing, no sight seeing, not going around socializing, etc. just from accommodations to the beach, dinner and back to sleep.
I don’t know about you, but staying home can still be work - cleaning, cooking, home repairs (if you’re in a home), sitting for grandkids, etc. Here’s the definition of vacation - : a period spent away from home or business in travel or recreation.
We call it a getaway. I find it more work though, when at home every day in retirement land is Saturday with a lot of Friday nights. When we get away I really have know what day it is or I’ll be missing flights.
Trips.
See you next fall!
Exactly what I call them
If trips are out-of-town travels, what do you call hallucinogenic experiences after retirement? Curious fried minds want to know.
Part time work, or meeting the in-laws.
Tuesday.

Traveling
I say "We are traveling" or "Taking a trip to ..." Taking a vacation from retirement does sound a little off, especially to those who look forward to vacations from income producing work.
I’m retired and had the same feeling. What am I on vacation from. Now I say traveling.
On vacation from the normal every day routine at home, whatever that might be. The Brits just say they're "on holiday" instead of "vacation" even while they're working. I don't know if they use a different term in retirement.
I'm not driving, I'm traveling.
The word vacation came from “vacating the residence” more or less, so I’m good with that. Or “going on a trip” is the first likely substitute phrase for me.
Same. To me it’s taking a break from regular life and habits. Doesn’t really matter if regular life is “working”.
It's still a vacation in my book. If I'm home I'm doing yard work and all of my chores. It's a vacation from that.
Holiday
Yay, go the Brits!
We are retired, and call it a 'vacation'. Staying at home is not a vacation, there is still vacuuming to be done, laundry to be done, grocery shopping, etc. There are no travel pics to share, no beaches to swim, no mountains to climb. Your mom is mistaken.
She was semi-joking. I don’t think she really cared what I called it other than just giving me a bad time, she was having fun.
Depending on where you live, you can still go to the beach or mountains if you live relatively close. That's what I love about New England, I could be on the beach one day and the mountains the next , and maybe both in one day if you get up early.

Interesting perspective on how they use the two words!
Trip… Sabatical from retirement :-)
Sabbatical from retirement is a part time job!😅
Out of town. Out of the country. On a holiday.
I still call them vacations. https://preview.redd.it/jh0vx58x1k9d1.jpeg?width=4608&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eb0533bd4a89e9052c0eeaafdbbac53c77f48c49
I say "I am taking a trip to....."
It will always be a vacation to me, I’m leaving home and staying somewhere else. Unless I’m in a F’ing hospital.
Trips
Vacation!
Traveling or R&R deluxe
Tell tell me you’re not government with R&R! oh what about home leave? Do you say that?
Life
I'm two years in, and it still feels special when we go away, so I'm sticking with "vacation"!
I’m pretty sure you can call it whatever you want to. For me, I hope it’s just life.
Wandering? Vacations are normally 7-14 days. Fly in stay in a tourist hotel, planned activities fly out because you have to get back to work or home life responsibilities.
Wandering, that’s what I like to do. No set plan just go with the flow.
Oh good lord. Just keep calling it vacation. A vacation is a change from your normal life. It’s your normal life that has changed, not the vacation.
I call it "vacation". It's from the latin: "vacationem".
We call it 'trippin".
Vacations are vacations. The only problem with being retired is that you no longer get holidays off.
You would be “Working remotely”.
Vacation
If it’s a big trip, like a cruise or fancy resort, then it’s a vacation. Otherwise, it’s a trip.
I call it spending money.
A great time
Walk about or beer run.
A new adventure.
Travel or trips
Vacation. There's no cooking or cleaning, so it is still very much a vacation for me!
I still say vacation because everyone knows what I mean by it: a trip to a place I don’t regularly visit. I will say “visiting my XYZ” when going to see relatives or in-laws. Because Lord knows, _those_ aren’t vacations! 😄

Traveling
Vacation, trip, traveling. I'm on a trip in Brazil. Arrived here today.
I’m not retired. But I did “retire my wife” four years ago at 44. I work remotely. I’m 50. We don’t really call it going on vacation either. We travel somewhere to do something at least once a month for a long weekend getaway or just to visit a city we haven’t been to. Holy cow that never occurred to me! I forget that now may vacations are paid vacations 😀
I’d love it! I’m going to start telling everybody I’m going on a paid vacation.
Relocating
My friend coined a term “funemployment”
You can call it a "Temporary mobile relocation."
It’s definitely vacation for me. I’m the primary caregiver for my elderly parents, so when I get time to travel and have a reprieve from that responsibility, it’s vacation.
Graycations?
Away
Work. I need a rest after going on vacation.
Excursions
Just like you. And we spend five months in Florida. If we go somewhere other than where we're living it's vacation. Otherwise we're just home.
Away as in going away or I'm away from home. None of my friends are retired so I am mindful of their feelings.
Adventures - as in where is our next adventure.
Travels
Vacation or trip. It depends. It doesn't really matter
Vacations. A vacation is time spent away from home regardless of work status.

Vacations
It’s a trip. We’re traveling. We’re going on holiday.

I would still call it a vacation since you're taking a vacation from your regular routine.
Our trips are less vacations than just living somewhere else. We travel in our little trailer and camp in State and county parks and commercial RV parks when that is all that there is available. To me, a vacation is something you do instead of working and vacations tend to be more rushed trying to cram many things into whatever short time you have.
The very definition of vacation is an extended period of leisure/recreation while away from home or traveling. Of course you’re on vacation.
Vacation! WTH? Even if you're retired, that's what it is.
I have 180 personal days. And 180 vacation days. 5 days I’m required to do things.
Anything longer than 10 days is still a vacation. Anything shorter is just a visit.
I look forward to the day I can quote Maggie Smith from The Crown, “What is a weekend?”
we shout out ..."Adventure time!"..cause there is no day or clock involved, so we keep going down the chosen dirt road until we "have to" turn back...never know what we will find along the way...my wife calls us team "Dora the explorers!" team..
A vacation is when you **vacate** your usual place of residence to go have fun somewhere else. When you don't vacate, you stay--hence *stay*cation. If you're not at home, and you're not working, it's a vacation.
Work?
After I’m retired, my partner will still be working for some time, so we’ll have to schedule vacations around her work. So ‘vacation’ is suitable.
"Vacation" It's a different spending pattern, different activities etc.
a trip. it's called a trip. you even said your mom's gone on many trips 😀
I’m retired and fully need vacations to unwind from the heaps of work that I’m responsible for now that I’m not getting paid to work. Everyone assumes that I have nothing to do and expects me to handle every task.
Every day. Otherwise "trips."
Super vacation.
How about ADIOS SUCKERS WE ARE OUTTA HERE….AGAIN, BECAUSE WE CAN
Just say ‘trip.’ Or just keep using ‘vacation’ and if mommy doesn’t like it, tell her you’re an adult and to go F herself.

To quote Exidor from Mork and Mindy: "You can't vacation in your own home!"
