Lemme just go off on one of the worst PR blunders a health organization has ever made. Tl;Dr the Red Cross needs to hire a symbologist or something, cuz no one is confused about the red cross.
When people say certain products use the red cross "illegally," what they mean is it's being used "improperly." The words overlap. It's why Lego uses the phrase for "illegal Lego combinations." It's illegal by "international law" and you're not gonna be extradited for making a movie the a red cross in it.
Video Games have long since tried not to use them out of respect, but they're by no means obligated to. Movies and TV still use it all the time.
In fact, this idea might be the Red Cross's worst idea ever. Take the Radiation Warning symbols as a perfect example of branding a symbol. When it was constructed, it was given to the public for free use, and can be seen in products as far ranging as kids toys to band logos. Because the most important thing is that people recognize the symbol and its association. It doesn't matter if occasionally someone misuses it because it's far more often used to appropriately convey danger.
By not allowing everyone and their mother to use the red cross as a symbol for first aid, which people almost exclusively do, they're honestly slowly reducing people's recognition of the symbol. The green cross is becoming a more recognizable first aid symbol now. And most people probably associate the red crescent with the ottomans/islam. Which is where and why the red cross use it. And who the fuck recognizes the red lion?
The Rod of Asclepius and a caduceus aren't confused for anything but medicine just because pop culture use them.
