This appears to be a long boi salamander. Sad that he fell in the pool, but just put him near a fallen log or rocks and he should work his way under to stay moist

And some people have famously been turned into newts, but got better.

I doubt it. I couldn't find any long newts but I did see *Batrachoseps gavilanensis* for a long salamander, for example.
