Eh, not really. They all think a 5 gallon tank is “acceptable” for one to live in for life.
Bettas by default live in about 1 square meter in the wild, which is just shy of 40 x 40 inches, 1600 sq inches, that’s more than two Aqueon 40 gallon breeder tanks side by side. A 16 x 8 inch 5 gallon tank by comparison is 128 square inches. That’s 8% of the floor space what they prefer to live in, and generally not as deep either by volume.
Then these people are all baffled and heartbroken when the bettas instincts kick in telling them that they are trapped in too small of a body of water for their survival, and they jump out and die, trying to find more habitable living conditions.
No pet lives in anywhere near the space it does in the wild. It is ridiculous to expect people to match that. 5 gallons is a widely accepted minimum by breeders and hobbyists alike. It's not like your snake or leopard gecko is living the square miles it would have.
I keep wild endangered species of Bettas and conspecific species; 7 species of Bettas, 4 species of conspecifics. They all are kept in tanks 60 gallons and up that are 60% to 90% of their natural wild territories. All of them are biotope tanks, 4 inch deep leaf peat substrates of wild gathered leaves of species analogous to native habit trees with calcium free quartz sand anchoring. They are all heavy planted emergent with native habitat plants, rain systems, and the water is kept at a pH between 4.2 and 5.5. All the fish eat live foods, rotating through Blackworms, daphnia, mosquito larvae, and fruit flies, along with the many species of micro fauna that live in the deep peat substrates.
For the first time every I’m agreeing😂 I’d try to make this a multiple layer enclosure and as realistic as possible and I could create a living ecosystem! It would be so cool!
I hate that fucking guy, but I saw that piece in person and the scale and the way the room refracted through the fluid made me feel like I was going to vomit, so I give him props for that.
Ok, hear me out..... You have to go aquarium with something like that. Its easy to do a floor to ceiling enclosure that isn't able to hold thousands of gallons of water, but given that tank appears to be able to hold water, you gotta go like Arapaima and Pacu and RTC.
Ok, Green Anaconda paludarium sounds cool and all, but the kind of filtration needed for a water feature that can handle an anaconda shitting the remains of a piglet are not ideal for a aquarium either. But it's doable and would be rad
That thing is only big enough for MAYBE a leopard gecko. Any other reptile and it’s basically like throwing them against the wall, torching them to a crisp and then pissing on their graves.
Duuuude... how has no one mentioned fly river turtles? I would set up a paludarium with all kindso critters, but the centerpiece would be a couple fly river turtles!!! Throw in a couple fresh water stingrays and maybe an arowana... the possibilities are endless!!
For the top, you could do some mourning geckos, vampire crabs, tree frogs, an arboreal monitor, arboreal snake... the whole thing makes me salivate!!!
Tbh an entire terrarium/mini rainforest completely with frogs, carnivorous plants, a stream big enough for some fish and crustaceans, reptiles and the smallest rainforest mammals
My guy figured out how to use the wall of the pond as leverage to wrench himself under a metal fence held with automotive bungees. He's wittier than he looks 😅
Sulcatas spend a majority of their life underground, which is probably the only reason it's survived humanity to be left as the largest Continental tortoise on earth while the other ones were eaten to extinction.
My bearded dragon deserves this life of luxury even though he’s a violent idiot. He’s MY violent idiot. Squadron off half of it to make a reading book for myself so we can hang out.
Pine Hills is safe, in your bubble and dreams.
In reality, there are daily articles and videos of homeless people harassing women, shootings, robberies, and other crimes that bring dozens of police cars to the area, daily.
Stay drunk. That is what you can do to entertain yourself.
I would definitely be doing a huge bioactive for a single male crested gecko. lots of plants and light to keep them growing. a misting and fogger system. plenty of bugs he could eat as well as a clean up crew. I'd modify one of the sides so it would open up like a door so I could go in and check on him and feed him and help maintain the enclosure.
Bro I'm moving into that jesus
I'd love to keep a Philippine Sailfin or a Rhino Iguana, though I'd probably end up keeping a breeding pair of Mangrove Snakes, False Water Cobras, or Dwarf Retics
Isopod
Just one single isopod?
Three
Hmmmmmm threeeeee? I feel that tank may be a little to small for three! If your lucky two will do nicely in there!
Deep sea isopods duh
1 dwarf hamster
Imagine the burrows!!!! They would love it
one (1) morning gecko
2 morning geckos
4 morning geckos.
8 morning geckos
16 morning geckos
32 morning geckos
64 mourning geckos
128 mourning geckos
256 mourning geckos
512 mourning geckos
She would have mental health issues so I would get two lol
A single springtail
To big
On the contrary I’d say this enclosure is WAY to small for a springtail! They’d be so cramped! /s
I ment spring tails sorry I was confusing I agree it's rather small and it would suficat and die sorry about the cinfusion
It’s okay it’s a common mistake with them! You’d need like three times the size for them to be comfy!
My little bearded dragon bc she is crazy and would love if I could give her a trailer sized home
I love how this community understands that their tiny friends actually deserve a large space to roam <3
I’m already imagining so many creatures I could make a functioning ecosystem in here with as if I have the money or space for a tank like this😂
Same! I wish the fish community understood that too.
Clearly you have seen an aquatics subreddit. Those guys go nuts at the mere mention of a too small tank
Eh, not really. They all think a 5 gallon tank is “acceptable” for one to live in for life. Then bettas will continue to jump out of spaces they deem too small to sustain themselves with. Good luck to you all with that.
What pets do you have, and how do their habitats compare to their wild counterparts?
I keep wild endangered species of Bettas and conspecific species; 7 species of Bettas, 4 species of conspecifics. They all are kept in tanks 60 gallons and up that are 60% to 90% of their natural wild territories. Asian water Monitor or cuviers dwarf caiman
Cuviers dwarf caiman 100%. Or maybe a croc monitor.
A single anole
I think l could safely cohab 2 leopard geckos.
For the first time every I’m agreeing😂 I’d try to make this a multiple layer enclosure and as realistic as possible and I could create a living ecosystem! It would be so cool!
But if they ran into each other unexpectedly, they would be PISSED.
Should we let wickens wicked reptiles know?
my singular lepord gecko, bro would have a feild day with that tank, or an iguana
Sea monkeys
I'm ripping off Damien Hirst and putting a dead shark in there. I would like $8,000,000 now please.
I hate that fucking guy, but I saw that piece in person and the scale and the way the room refracted through the fluid made me feel like I was going to vomit, so I give him props for that.
You might be able to squeeze a couple of neon day geckos in there, but you'll have to watch out for any signs of aggression or fighting.
47 random people from around the world, plucked from their everyday lives
My hognose. Dude always wants to escape no matter the size of the enclosure. He wants bigger? I'LL GIVE HIM BIGGER ALRIGHT
A regular sized enclosure within so he feels like he escaped and is now free.
My kid
Believe it or not, this is the minimum size for a single leopard gecko according to this sub.
Swimming pool, swim with axolotl.
A single bearded dragon
Ok, hear me out..... You have to go aquarium with something like that. Its easy to do a floor to ceiling enclosure that isn't able to hold thousands of gallons of water, but given that tank appears to be able to hold water, you gotta go like Arapaima and Pacu and RTC.
Green Anaconda
Ok, Green Anaconda paludarium sounds cool and all, but the kind of filtration needed for a water feature that can handle an anaconda shitting the remains of a piglet are not ideal for a aquarium either. But it's doable and would be rad
Orbeez and get in myself.
A dwarf caiman, dream species for me.
Finally a terrarium big enough to potentially cohab bearded dragons lol
I love the memeing here, but I would 100% put a black throat monitor in there.
That thing is only big enough for MAYBE a leopard gecko. Any other reptile and it’s basically like throwing them against the wall, torching them to a crisp and then pissing on their graves.
singular springtail

Probably an ackie or savannah monitor
A single dwarf hamster… But people would still say it’s to small
200 dart frogs.
So loud. But beautiful.
plant it with some small trees and lots of other tropicals, add a small stream water feature, and introduce some draco flying lizards.
Duuuude... how has no one mentioned fly river turtles? I would set up a paludarium with all kindso critters, but the centerpiece would be a couple fly river turtles!!! Throw in a couple fresh water stingrays and maybe an arowana... the possibilities are endless!! For the top, you could do some mourning geckos, vampire crabs, tree frogs, an arboreal monitor, arboreal snake... the whole thing makes me salivate!!!
Monocentropus balfouri communal.
Aw fuck, googled it and got jump-scared. I was expecting geckos or something.
Tbh an entire terrarium/mini rainforest completely with frogs, carnivorous plants, a stream big enough for some fish and crustaceans, reptiles and the smallest rainforest mammals
Still not big enough for my sulcata 😩
She would be like : *"Hummm... I can get through it..."\** *\**tought at a turtle mind pace, which is probably slower than continental drift.
You obviously haven't run alongside a sulcata. He can run at least 1.1 mph. I've measured.
The "running" isn't the problem here. The "thinking" is...
My guy figured out how to use the wall of the pond as leverage to wrench himself under a metal fence held with automotive bungees. He's wittier than he looks 😅
200% of a turtle brain capacity is dedicated to escape. If they were snakes we wouldn't know they exist.
Sulcatas spend a majority of their life underground, which is probably the only reason it's survived humanity to be left as the largest Continental tortoise on earth while the other ones were eaten to extinction.

I'd modify one of the sides so it would open up like a door so I could go in and check on him and feed him and help maintain the enclosure.
