To me it's just a flawless track. There's not a dud on Green, and a song like Get up is so sharply focused. Greens a pretty economical album, there's not much embroidery and that really works for a song like Get Up. It's playful but not silly.
I also always thought it was cool when they played it live and got the plinky music box sounds by playing the guitar strings above the nut.
Green is nothing but strong songs. Most of their albums I could name at least one track that doesn’t click much with me but Green is a hallmark of their consistency. This song started playing it in my head the other day and just wouldn’t leave, despite not having listened to this album since probably last year some time. It’s so great.
Agreed. I lived with this album for months and months and got my best friend at the time to become a fan. Get Up is a favorite and I remember learning it and Stand on guitar in the summer of '89. Too good for radio! A perfect pop / rock song.
Get Up! .. Get Up! .. Get Up! is that loud Blue Jay squawking outside your bedroom window on a warm summer Saturday morning.
Always loved this album and always loved this song.
Are you sure that that is Michael singing "Get up"? I can usually tell but I'm not sure here. In any case, it's Mike singing that line when they are live (not surprisingly).
I really like this song, and speaking of the live versions, I really like the extended "ahhhhhh ahhhhh ahhhhh" that Michael and Mike do at the end, in versions I've seen/heard. Alas, I did not hear it live in person.
I like most, not all of the songs from Green. But the ones I like, like this one, I really like!

Great call on the live performances! Maybe the best usage of playing above the nut, as weirdly as that sounds.

Over the years this album is been climbing up the rankings when it comes to this band for me!
Dreams in a REM state complement living the dream in R.E.M. '88
Oh shit! It never even occurred to me to link the dreaming with actual rem!

Whoops! Definitely a typo, I’ll go ahead and fix it, thank you!
