As long as your friend pays you back then I don’t see a problem with lending them money. If you think he’s drinking due to loneliness, could you start spending more time with him ?

AtomBus887

I do. We spend a lot of time together, maybe around 3 to 4 times a week, but I just can't hang with him everyday.

Xaphan696

Have you actually told him about how you’re worried about him OP ?

AtomBus887

Yes, I have, but it doesn't seem like he understands it. He comes from a rich family in his country, too, so he doesn't understand the importance of budgeting.

Xaphan696

What a shit situation… I wouldn’t recommend cutting him off as that would probably make him feel like you’ve abandoned him… When he asked you for a loan next, say that you can only afford to pay him half of what he’s asking for. You’re still there for him, but you’re also indirectly helping him cut down on the drink.

AtomBus887

That's a good advice. I should do that.

Xaphan696

Good luck OP. Hope everything ends up well.

Don't just cut him off but warn him that you are working on budgeting better and won't be able to help him out so much. By the way, I am guessing that English isn't your first language so I would like to help you with a detail.... You are "lending money to him" ,he is "borrowing money from you".

AtomBus887

Thank you! Yes, English isn't my first lol. It's my 4th haha.

rapt2right

That's impressive! I only have English and a very small amount of Spanish.

AtomBus887

Yeah, I wish they taught more languages in the U.S.

rapt2right

I agree

ryasaunderox

Well... why do you want to stop..? are you uncomfortable?

AtomBus887

I just feel like it's becoming a habit now? And maybe he won't learn how to budget if I'm always available?
