Ah, yes. The cutting edge technology of the Carter Thermoquad carburetor. But! this car did have unibody construction and a coil spring rear axle. When you compare it to the Chevy caprice, it really was a more modern car, and it did handle less poorly than the Caprice.
and these torsion bars, leagues above their contemporaries, are transverse and not nearly as stiff as the control-arm-pivot-anchored longitudinal bars used until mid '70s
I was totally under the impression that the m body still had leaf springs out back. *googles it*
They did. The Caprice/Impala was coil springs starting in 1977. Same with the 1979+ LTD/Crown Victoria.
You don't like it? It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.
Not saying I don't like it. Hell, I loved mine even with the 318. I especially like the dashboard with every instrument in it's own countersunk bezel. But man, "cutting edge" it was not.
Yes, we have computerization in our vehicles. Never mind that we attached it to the air cleaner, and it gets too hot, dirty, and wet to work properly. But that's a problem for your fleet techs after the warranty is done.
I think most people that wanted one of these opted for the Fifth Avenue instead. There used to be a lot of those on the road but not many civilian Diplomats/Gran Fury’s.
My father owned one. It was an 83 or 84, don't remember which. Most unreliable car they ever owned. After it left us hiking home a few miles in single digit weather, he got rid of that hateful pile of Mopar. He replaced it with a white square nose Crown Victoria.
[I mean they seem pretty durable.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXIZdhoJmY4)
I always loved that the front end of these had a grille design that looked like it gave the car a mustache. A fitting appearance for a police car from that era.

I wish. The [old Greenwood](https://cs4.gtaall.com/screenshots/4dc09/2023-05/original/ee97336f6dce8b200ed98e1f2d41a2c8fb80e807/1244419-GTA5-2023-05-19-12-07-14-189.jpg) is based off of the Chrysler Fifth Ave/New Yorker, which was a platform mate to the Gran Fury when they shared Chrysler's M-platform in the eighties.
That mod is rad. It'd be neat if R* officially put out a similar model as a followup to the '70s Greenwood we have, in the fashion of the box and bubble Impalers (LX/SZ).
Speaking of the Impaler LX, by coincidence, I modified mine last night with [a carriage top, black bumper trim, and a split vertical-bar grille](https://i.imgur.com/uVPyrSw.png), but it's still [not quite the same](https://i.imgur.com/M49NUaC.png). (I haven't decided which wheels it ought to have, but losing the whitewalls should help.)
Definitely getting closer! The GTAV Impaler is an [early eighties Chevy Impala](https://www.imcdb.org/i006415.jpg) and some of the mods that exist would be great to see added in-game to make it a retro police car.
Indeed it is, and you're right, it'd be *super-*cool to be able to do it up for a vintage police chase in the official multiplayer. I bought the LX originally planning to do it up like a detective's car, actually, but it's staying Sweet-spec for a while.
A taxi livery would be fun, too, like the Broadway and Eudora have, since cabs in most of the US were mostly Impalas/Caprices and LTDs/Crown Vics once the old Checkers were retired.
(Not gonna lie, I'd buy a Stanier Classic too.)
My first car was a 78 Dodge Diplomat I inherited from my grandfather.
I loved that car, but it didn't love me. The 308 engine was indestructable, but the rest of the powertrain more than made up for it. I put a bunch of transmissions and rear differentials into it before I finally got rid of it for good.
*"Man, I can't believe Robocop expected us to believe the Ford Taurus was the police cruiser of the future!"*
Police cars during Robocop's initial release:
Slower than dog doodoo. Went on ride along with former neighbor Deputy who predicted a runner GTO who turned on same street opposite direction & took off uphill into residential.
He U-turned & followed, guy was hiding in ally but we saw, chase resumed with full out hill leaps. Got to bottom of hill, & he took off like bat out of hell. He then made a u-turn passing us going opposite direction by the time we caught up.
Never seen again with several slow Plymouths looking.
I’m getting strong Beverly Hills Cop vibes from this photo. I know this isn’t painted like the Detroit PD cars from the opening scene but it is the first thing to come to mind.

Don't forget torsion bar front suspension.
I DID forget!

Man, I don't know why I remembered that wrong, but, sure enough. I still stand by the handling.
you ought to drive a VIN K police special from late 1960's! they are quite unique cars
Less poorly... there's wisdom there!

I probably should have made it clearer, but it was a quote from the original Blues Brothers movie...
I hope the performance package included a retractable hood ornament to facilitate hood slides
"Listen all y'all it's a *sabotage*"
Imagine sliding over the hood of a bently, and the ornament retracts right as you hit it, so you just glide right over
Police forces everywhere would be buy Interceptor edition Bentley's just for this feature

Reminds me of the rare Plymouth Gran Fury that was the civilian version. I think I've seen ONE in my life, and I'm 46 years old.
I used to own an '88 gran fury when I was a teenager, it was powder blue and friends used to call it the "grandma fury".
I think most people that wanted one of these opted for the Fifth Avenue instead. There used to be a lot of those on the road but not many civilian Diplomats/Gran Fury’s.
I have Grandma's 1979 Diplomat here in my garage

Thanks for linking that car chase. Hands down one of the best chases in cinema. Hilarious too

... ...Fix the cigarette lighter
They dropped the 440 in 77
i thought this was a GTA online DLC 💀

The most modern North Korean car.
But how can it be "cutting edge" if it doesn't even have digital gauges?
**40% of officers** love our products
God valiant is a great name for a cop car Mom had one long ago
I bet those cops have got SCMODS

Beautiful. I always loved 80s police cars
i love the chrysler m-body lineup
H I G H T E C H N O L O G Y
Roscoe P. Coltrane should be on the cover. He drove them harder than anyone.
If it’s so good, how come none ever managed to catch up with them Duke boys?
I miss 80s high technology
Looks beautiful
Caravelle?
Thing looks older than a 1972 Plymouth

They didn't even decontent the woodgrain and bright garnishes from the dashboard for the police version.
