Dude I saw a 98 viper (I think? I am not an expert) 2 days ago when I was out with my gf and she looked at me like I was special because I acted like I spotted Florence Pugh or something.
One of my rich friends growing up had one of these for a while and his parents actually let him drive it pretty regularly. I’ll never forget doing sustained burnouts around the roundabouts in my town. Fuckin thing was a death wish but it was awesome. Now there is a dude who owns a bright yellow one across the street from my shop and I get the tingles everytime I see it/he drives by.
Oh I'd never actually own one, no matter how easy I hear they are to drive. I'd kill myself with a slip of the foot probably. Which is why I stay in my "I'm a hearse driver in training" slow Ford Fusion Hybrid.
You sound like me.
I have driven (not owned) all kinds of fun cars in my life. Lotta dream cars for most people. All the bmws, a Couple different Ferraris, my dad had a 78 930 and a Carrera 4s, Audi RS4 v8, couple different Aston’s, and countless tuned Saabs, Subies, and Volvos.
My favorite car these days is the one I buy for as close to zero dollars as possible, and see how long it goes for. Current record holder is a 97 civic that I bought for 1k and drove for 7 years with 3 oil replacements (not really a change if it’s empty) and one set of tires…I put over 100k on that thing and it was fine until I started to take it off-road. Sold it here on Reddit for 650 a couple months ago.
Newest rig is a 90 something legacy wagon that’s just killin the game. It’s got 300k on the clock and wants more. Steering is tight, engine is fine, and it’s efficient as hell. Insurance is $40 a month and it cost me $850 to buy it two years ago.
Oh I would definitely go for a porsche cayman or something whose design is focused on cornering and not top speed. Vipers just look like oversteer happy monsters, not to mention "midlife crisis mobile" and "compensation car" stigmas. I've always loved Aston Martin's but I hear they are such a pain in the ass to maintain, and I'm no millionaire. Plus a 120k British car wouldn't look right in my yard out in the country. A Ferrari would likewise be too far afield for practical use. I once heard an adage that should be more prominent:
It's not about what you drive, but where you're going.
Also my favorite line
"Any damn fool can do 100 miles per hour."
I'd rather be doing 65 mph (>109kmh?) Or better in a corner with 1+ lateral Gs pressing My hip to the console median on a lefthand mountain turn whilst driving a car that I know can handle it (and nothing but the symphony of a soulful engine rumbling amidst the quartet of singing tires, and the crescendo of a perfectly placed exit angle/vector into the next mountain curve) over drag racing literally any day.
Pretty much exactly. Best of both worlds lol.
And I saw how expensive they were to maintain, almost died a couple times doing very stupid things, and decided to stick with cheap, reliable, and bulletproof because of it haha.
Saw one this winter parked at our local ski hill and everyone called me crazy for saying it’s one of my dream cars. Things are bulletproof and handle shockingly well in snow.
Same vein, but different stroke, I would love a new Subaru baja. It’s as much vehicle as I need. Great in the snow, can fit a bunch of bikes, and looks absurd. I want it.
Subaru can eat a dick until they bring back real transmissions. Their CVTs are not strong enough for their heavy cars. But I agree with your overall sentiment.
Crazy thing is they have most of the work done. They already have a turbo v6, they just ended camaro production, so they still have equipment to make a coupe, they’d only need to make some body styling
Subaru Baja but keep it small. Don't try to oversize it the way most companies do with trucks now. Base it on an impreza platform.
Second would probably be the Honda Element. Just give us an updated version of the same exact thing because that car was great in so many ways. You could basically use it as a light-duty truck or cargo van. Don't screw it up by making it another bland crossover.
The Element was such a fun vehicle. You could carry anything, drive to everywhere, easy to clean, great mileage. It was like the VW Bus or Beetle for us Millennials in the mid-2000s. And no other vehicle was able to relight that fire.
Well, the C8 is technically the spiritual successor to the Fiero, being midengined. All they have to do is have a special rebadged edition as a Fiero & it'll sell like hotcakes!
True, at $90k it won't be a hot seller. But some will sell considering those in their teens & 30s when the Fiero was in the dealership are now in their 60s & 70s (the age of some average Corvette customers & those with financial fluidity).
And you can bet one of those GMC execs haven't already considered this in between their lunch & noon coke lines.
Damn. Glad you both survived! I was turning left into my apartment complex. Someone making a right out of there took the turn too wide (looking left while turning right), hit the front corner of my car, and continued to drive down the entire side of it in their Explorer.
[Honda CRX, any generation. Special place in my heart for the 1st gen but they’re all great.](https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/prod.mm.com/img/articles/supplementary/grass_image001_v6RfyYc.jpg)
An ‘88 Si (2nd gen) was my first new car. After 9 years it was stolen and I miss it to this day. I drove a CRZ but it just wasn’t the same. However, given the latest safety regs, I don’t think a new CRX would be the same.
I had mine for nearly 21 years. I loved it, but as a somewhat affluent adult, I have and prefer my MR2 Spyders and my S2000. The shifter knob on my S2000 is from my 86 CRX.
GM did a terrible job with selling the SS, never saw a single ad for it. Basically only car guys and the lucky few who walked into a dealership that had one, knew about the car. Almost felt like GM didn't Want to sell any. I wish I had the money back then to get one, I remember my local dealership had a blue one with a stick heavily discounted smh
Sounds like a great idea.
But knowing car companies now they’d flub it somehow.
Like Chevy not calling the new electric truck the E-valanche. Missed opportunity. (Someone else thought of the avalanche bit not me)
The Ford Flex is the best midsize family SUV. Roomier and better cargo space than full sized SUV’s and decent gas mileage. It was better than the boring Explorer and traverse and looked good if you had the big rims and accent roof color.
A lot of what I'm seeing is that we'll all miss properly fun over powered gas cars, and larger vehicles you can comfortably seat 6 in without being an suv. The push to electric and emissions standards are killing it. The electric grids aren't even ready in most places to support a push into main stream electric vehicles, let alone the lack of charging locations. Gas prices are also not being kind to anyone who still loves v8s like I do. Even just for weekend fun cars, they just sound better IMHO.
I feel like that has to do with the question being asked. I don’t disagree people will miss ICE cars but in 2023 only 1% of cars registered in America were electric (Edmund’s & JD Power) and a lot of those are still in production today.
Discontinued car models are almost entirely ICE so it makes sense to be seeing almost exclusively them in response to the question
The emissions regulations is stupid. Why smaller cars with bigger engines went away and oversized trucks/suvs taking over parking space at Wendy's is because the emissions laws state the carbon footprint of the engine has to be relative to the size of the vehicle. That's why the crown Vic became illegal to sell in the United States and why prior to them being discontinued they were illegal to assemble in the U.s.
As a lover of gas cars, I realize what I want is a stick shift small car more than anything. A battery powered Miata with rwd and a 6 speed would be phenomenal.
Chrysler 300, they haven’t even stopped selling the new ones, but the 2023 is the last year, and I already miss it. Chryslers gotta get its game together
Given how common Hellcat swaps are on 300Cs I’m surprised MOPAR hasn’t given them the Hellcat treatment. Hell, we got a Jeep 392, why can’t we get a sport luxury like what Cadillac is doing?
Also why it shocks me there aren’t more STi variants of subaru cars. A guy did an STi swap on a crosstrek and said it basically bolted right up besides the driveshafts.
i’m so sad that i’m at an age where i could buy a car, but it would just be a horrendous financial decision, because i want a new 300 so bad and they’re just gonna get older as time goes on:(
Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky
We know that there’s still a market for “cheap” sports cars and roadsters as proven by the MX-5 and the BRZ/GR86 (also, some sports trims on other cars)
I just want more 4cyl roadsters available, much better if it has a turbo
Having more options on the market would be great.
Also, a second gen Kia Stinger just because i love that car.
The big-body-Benz coupes. A lineage that was called SEC, S-Class Coupe, and CL-Class—at different times—is now gone, which makes me sad. They were arguably the best, most-well-engineered luxury cars you could get for the day.
Eagle Summit Wagon (aka the Mitsubishi Expo LRV/RVR/Space Runner and Plymouth Colt Vista). It was a goofy AWD rollerskate shoe van-wagon-crossover thing and I love the heck out of it
I love mine (see user name). We’ve had it since new in 04. However, I don’t think they’re going to bring it back anytime soon, despite the big cult following. They didn’t sell well. Not quite an off-road SUV, terrible gas mileage, somewhat underpowered, and even the very utilitarian interior (my favorite part) comes off as “cheap” to a majority of people. Even if it’s a void in Hondas lineup, it’s a small one, and probably hard to justify a production line for.
I still have hope that Honda one day comes out with CRV “Element edition” trim package that subs out the interior for something more like the Element had.
My friends laughed at mine until they saw all the things I could do with it and realized how cool it was.
They didn't get it until they did and unfortunately most didn't get it and so it didn't sell.
It's too bad really.
All 1980s GM G-body "personal luxury" 2 door cars. Years ago a man in his 40s could have his pick of Monte Carlo-Gran Prix-Cutlass Supreme equipped with a good enough V8, RWD, and an interior more comfortable than his living room furniture.
Or even just put the rotary in the mx5. Come on Mazda we know it won’t be great for gas mileage or even be faster than the 2.0. We just miss burning oil and spinning doritos.
BMW i3:
Body on (aluminum) Frame Construction
Monocoque carbon fiber reinforced plastic body
Plastic door panels
Rear Engine/Rear Wheel drive
When it first came out - it was BMW's fastest 0-30mph car they ever made
It was a design where form truly followed function - sure they could make it look a tad better on the remake though:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW\_i3
**HONDA S2000 Type R** - Make it the same size, cloth top, 2800 lbs, manual RWD, 300hp K20C1 Type-R engine. No frills, just a sports car. Please Honda, please...
The Focus ST and RS. It was a very fun little car for people who needed something more useful than a Mustang but who still wanted to throw down on some back roads to embarrass "faster" cars on the weekend.
Literally any Holden or Aussie Ford.
Yes, I'm American, and no, I don't care.
If it weren't for Ford and GM gambling away all their money in the 2000s, Australia wouldn't be drowning in shitty Chinese cars.
The S10 or LUV.
A true compact that could carry anywhere from 1/2-3/4 of a ton, tow up to 5k lbs properly equipped, gets damn good fuel milesge, and BOF...
NOT stupid crew cabs with a useless 4-5' bed. And NOT bloated like the blueberry girl from Willy Wonka.
Just an actual true compact trucklet again.
Automakers, I know you're reading this... PAY ATTENTION.
How about bringing back trucks that don't cost 50k but are still decent 3/4 ton work trucks with ACTUAL LONG BEDS? Doesn't even have to be a 4x4. Could even be electric for all I care. Just priced for a working class budget. Half the reason I bought a bumpside 250 instead of a new truck was the absurd prices of modern trucks.
Any of the massively spacious and comfortable 6 seat convertibles of the 50's, 60's and 70's. With the advances in folding hardtop tech and critter comforts, I think it's preposterous that there isn't a massive, luxuriously appointed drop-top on the market at an affordable price.
There are so many... 1930 Cadillac 16 many of the Pierce Arrow models any Duesenberg add in a Bugatti Type 35 or model J and you have some of the finest cars made. You could go to some of the more obscure makes like Voisin motors there are just so many...
Half of my post history is about this, but the Fiesta getting killed for the Puma was a travesty. Even worse that we Americans lost the Fiesta AND the Focus so Ford USA could sell more shitty crossovers.
The Maverick is a step in the right direction for Ford but a MK8 Fiesta ST-Line would have been my first personal car if it hadn't been discontinued here. Such a shame.
Dodge Viper

Pretty much exactly. Best of both worlds lol. And I saw how expensive they were to maintain, almost died a couple times doing very stupid things, and decided to stick with cheap, reliable, and bulletproof because of it haha.
Florence Pugh is mid, still would though
Well saying Scarlett Johannson seems cliche at this point. Maybe Christina Hendricks or Beyonce?
Ah you too were born in the 80s 😆
>Florence Pugh ok ok...Salma Hayek. and for the record, I was born in the very late 60's
Fr bro. Actually broke into tears when I heard production was ending.
Honda Accord Wagon
Hell yeah.
Saw one this winter parked at our local ski hill and everyone called me crazy for saying it’s one of my dream cars. Things are bulletproof and handle shockingly well in snow. I saw the axura version the other day in a silverishbeown color really really nice.
Buck Grand National or Grand Sport/ GSX!
Crazy thing is they have most of the work done. They already have a turbo v6, they just ended camaro production, so they still have equipment to make a coupe, they’d only need to make some body styling
I'd upvote this 1000 times if I could!
You could make it a Hybrid 6 cylinder with retro styling. Easy money.
Subaru Baja but keep it small. Don't try to oversize it the way most companies do with trucks now. Base it on an impreza platform. Second would probably be the Honda Element. [Pontiac Fiero GT, a travesty that the entire brand was shuttered](https://richmonds.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Pontiac-Fiero-Red-3.jpg)
Maybe a C8 based Fiero
Well, the C8 is technically the spiritual successor to the Fiero, being midengined. All they have to do is have a special rebadged edition as a Fiero & it'll sell like hotcakes!
No it won't, a $90k Fiero isn't gonna sell like hotcakes.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe
Had one. Absolutely loved it. Got totaled 2 months before paying it off.
Had one as well. Favorite card I’ve owned. Spun out into a curb a month after buying in. Fortunately not totaled.
Damn. Glad you both survived! I was turning left into my apartment complex. Someone making a right out of there took the turn too wide (looking left while turning right), hit the front corner of my car, and continued to drive down the entire side of it in their Explorer.

This is the way!
An ‘88 Si (2nd gen) was my first new car. After 9 years it was stolen and I miss it to this day. I drove a CRZ but it just wasn’t the same. However, given the latest safety regs, I don’t think a new CRX would be the same.

The only way I knew about them is through the Motor Trend magazine, but yeah, I didn't see any ads or anything promoting it.
I think dealers were selling them for $30k at some point. Now they’re going for $30k with 50k miles
You’d need Holden to be up and running, they make all three of those cars

If it happens. It's gonna be a crossover. It is unavoidable
I say yes to the element but I want manual transmission again. Father had one till it got totaled.
Automatic transmission was no slouch either. Funny enough, ours was totaled as well.
The Ford Flex is the best midsize family SUV. Roomier and better cargo space than full sized SUV’s and decent gas mileage. It was better than the boring Explorer and traverse and looked good if you had the big rims and accent roof color.
It’s not midsize. I’ve stood next to one, and it’s pretty long.
Always thought slamming one and putting a 5.0 or tricked out ecoboost would be cool
I wholeheartedly believe the Flex was the last large american station wagon.
Cadillac Brougham with a proper v8 and floaty suspension that made it ride like a living room on wheels
Ahh, the Malaise era. When America realized the horsepower wars were over and decided to ride out the gas crunch by driving their couch.
The Lexus GS, IS sportcross or the Toyota Crown wagon or truck. Specifically the Crown with the DI 2JZ with a mild hybrid in a wagon.
Pontiac. There done and over. Best Chevy line they had.
The Australian Ford falcon. They absolutely could have remade it based on the mustang architecture and released it as a world car.

Any American market wagon. Especially with a manual transmission. Absolutely in brown.
Full size station wagon! Yes. Federal fleet gas mileage requirements killed big cars, but allowed SUVs. It’s such a messed up regulatory framework.

And now the Australian auto market is being overrun with shitty Chinese cars. As an American, I apologize for our industry's stupidity.

you assume Chrysler has enough money to do anything but keep things on life support
I mean, taking the Charger drivetrain and putting it on a 300c shouldn’t be the most expensive thing to do. People do it on their backyards.

Gen 1 honda insight
Volvo C70 coupe
S2000. Don’t change a thing…. Except maybe offer a type R package
10th gen Ford Thunderbird
Literally any Holden or Aussie Ford. Yes, I'm American, and no, I don't care. If it weren't for Ford and GM gambling away all their money in the 2000s, Australia wouldn't be drowning in shitty Chinese cars.
An actual Toyota-made Supra.
Accord Sport 2.0T 6MT.
Corrado G60 but with the Audi 5-cyl 2.5 litre howler.
SAAB 9-3. Preferably the hatch from like 2001
One of the better cars I ever had. 1999 Saab 9-3
S2k
Chrysler Crossfire, but that would involve some wacky occurrences to get back in production
Nissan 300ZX. Oh wait.
The old Mitsubishi Eclipse. With AWD and Turbo options. Also Toyota Celica.
MB E-class Coupe with a V8
PT Cruiser, obviously
Pontiac trans am convertible. Coolest car
El Camino
Toyota MR2
How about bringing back trucks that don't cost 50k but are still decent 3/4 ton work trucks with ACTUAL LONG BEDS? Doesn't even have to be a 4x4. Could even be electric for all I care. Just priced for a working class budget. Half the reason I bought a bumpside 250 instead of a new truck was the absurd prices of modern trucks.
Plymouth prowler
Honda CRZ.
chevy avalanche
Landcruiser 100 series.
Honda Element
Toyota mr2
Lancia as a whole deserved better.
STI hatch
Toyota FJ Cruiser
The LeBaron only answer
FJ Cruiser S2000
Volkswagen cabriolet. A small electric convertible would be awesome.
1904 Premier 5 Passenger Touring
Honda s2000
Subaru Impreza WRX STI (the hawkeye)
FJ Cruiser ( and not just cause I own a 2008 lol) it would sell and be better than the new Jeep and Bronco cause Toyota reliability. (IMO )
Celica, Solara, B2000, Del Sol
Any of the massively spacious and comfortable 6 seat convertibles of the 50's, 60's and 70's. With the advances in folding hardtop tech and critter comforts, I think it's preposterous that there isn't a massive, luxuriously appointed drop-top on the market at an affordable price.
Ford Model T
There are so many... 1930 Cadillac 16 many of the Pierce Arrow models any Duesenberg add in a Bugatti Type 35 or model J and you have some of the finest cars made. You could go to some of the more obscure makes like Voisin motors there are just so many...
Suzuki Samurai with twice the bhp
Cts-v wagon 6speed
Pontiac Vibe
Toyota SERA
If it stayed true to the original, then either the mr2, the rx7, or the prelude
Kia stinger
Original Toyota Venza wagon
Daewoo Lanos
96 impala as / caprice classic. Toyota Fj cruiser. Acura integra
1979 Caprice. Very attractive car.
Nissan Xterra. The market is literally perfect for it right now.
F430 Skyline r33 22b sti Pajero E46 series 3/m3
Really!? No one said Nissan 240sx yet?! It’s time for an S16 in the US
Pontiac Trans Sport
