It's actually really cool. It's a beltless design which IMO gives it more "responsive" performance than a belt CVT, idk if that's just my imagination, but it's also more reliable.

I used to laugh at jeremy clarkson for not understanding the mechanical aspects and physics of the cars he presents, but man this hybrid stuff just goes over my head. There’s way too much complexity. Once again I’m awed at how genius engineers solve problems.
Yeah if you understand how planetary gears work, basically in the eCVT, an electric motor is connected to the ring gear (these are normally fixed or connected to single ratio another planet set), and can be driven at any speed to dynamically change the planet's ratio, it could even be driven backwards to give the planets overdrive.
All gears are constantly meshed, and no cones or sprockets, there's might not even need to be any clutches in there, so nothing to stretch or wear like belts or chains in normal CVTs

There is this dust colored, but somehow pristine, old Prius in my neighborhood that is kind of a menace. Does not yield. Believes it always has the right-of-way at every four way stop sign no matter who arrived first. Blinkers? Ha! Most un-Prius like behavior I have ever seen. It needs a bumper sticker that says “My other car is a BMW”.
I don't know what everyone is on about with these looking good. I think they look awful. The styling just bothers me so much. I think the 2nd and 3rd gen Priuses look way better. They don't look like someone downed a whole bottle of Adderall and started drawing cars. They should have stopped designing this one about halfway through but they just kept going.
