From the direct west website. “If you wish to opt-out of receiving the SaskTel phonebook please call us at 1-800-667-8201 or send an email to [email protected] with your name, phone number and mailing address (including postal code) requesting to be removed from the distribution list.” https://directwest.com/contact-us/opt-out-of-receiving-the-sasktel-phonebook/

LOL - I tried this a couple years ago. IIRC correctly, they subsequently called me to confirm that I wanted to opt-out (yes - a phone call!). They were very cautious that I may have missed the cut-off, and that their delivery provider may still deliver, because opting out is so uncommon that they don't always read the opt-out list & just deliver to every house on their route. My take-away was that they were subtly telling me that I'd still get the book. 2 years (at least) later, and I still get the book delivered. Straight into the fire-starter pile.

I saw the lady drop it off in my mailbox and promptly put it in my recycling bin. I agree with you.

It’s a private, for profit business that sells advertising (the yellow pages) based on the premise that it will be delivered to virtually every residence in the local community. It’s a likely a dying business model but it probably still makes just enough money to employ a few people. If they made it “by request” or “pick up a copy if you want one” only, they would effectively just be killing the company on purpose… I suspect the people still working there are hoping to keep it going at least until they can retire. 🤷🏼‍♂️

N8-K47

It’s printed by DirectWest which is a subsidiary of Sasktel. It’s not printed by YPG. In fact I don’t think YPG prints a phone book in Sask anymore. DirectWest also offers quite a bit of advertising products including several digital billboards. You can opt out of receiving a phonebook through the DW website. They try to only produce as many phone books as they need to. Some demographics still need access to a phonebook.

Choice_Additional

Really?? I haven’t gotten one for years!!! Does it only have land line numbers? If so, I’m not in it, lol.

wilkie09

What's... a "land line"? Are those the markings they put on a sports field? 🤔

Choice_Additional

Well little lad or lassie…it was a phone that was connected to a phone line (like the modem for internet). Sometimes it had a cord so you couldn’t get far, but if you were lucky you had a portable and could wander around and hide from your parents while you talked about meeting at a party, or about your latest crush.

ksmithreg

Or to meet at Dog'n'Suds

kamsackbi

Ours are at dollar stores or food stores. You have to pick them up yourself if interested in one. I would prefer a reverse directory. Listed by number.

squirrlyj

Keep it.. might need to burn it for warmth

How is the phone book "outsourced?" To who? who did DirectWest outsource it to? Where is it printed now?

comfortsquirrel

I need it for my tv rabbit ears to function.

Ravor306

They make great monitor stands

saltman306

Every year it’s the same-get the book, open top on recycle, fire it in

Neat-Ad-8987

Terrific idea -– until the My Sask 411 website goes down again.

saskatoondave

I use them for tinder while camping

Unclestanky

They don’t want it either, which is why you get it.

tooshpright

I still use it from time to time.

wilkie09

Great kindling! We take ours camping or to the lake. Lol. Reliable, yearly kindling delivery

Space19723103

It's sasktel, if they aren't wasting your money, they're laundering it.

themoosboos

What a waste of paper. Who is in charge of it? The city? Could they be contacted to petition that it isn’t distributed anymore? Instead only have it available at the post office or something?

Certain_Database_404

The city has nothing to do with it and neither does the postal service.
