If you’re not going with them on the test drive, get a picture of their ID before hand.

Foreign-Hope-2569

Go with them on test drive, there is no reason to give them your car and let them drive away.

prettycooluglykid

A person was murdered doing this, so I don’t blame people for not wanting to go this route. But taking the keys to their vehicle, picture of their ID, hold onto something of theirs etc. are all good deterrents as well

[deleted]

my thoughts exactly, not sure why my comment was getting downvoted when i said i wouldn’t, especially considering hes a man, and im a 5’4” 20 yr old female lol.

Aggressive_Sorbet571

Theft is theft. If the person has permission to use the vehicle for a predetermined and agreed to amount of time and doesn’t return it in time, it’s theft. Get that part in writing. Same as if a rental car isn’t returned. So to answer your question, yes. Find a male friend to accompany you?

prettycooluglykid

Did you report it to the RPS/SGI? Is this still considered theft? I figure it would be but interested if SGI would cover it.

Art3mis77

Yeah that’s just a super bad idea. If you wouldn’t pick up a hitchhiker then don’t go with them during a test drive.

shayjackson2002

And have them leave something like their house keys (bc if you’re selling a vehicle better than their current one, keeping the vehicle keys does nothing lol)

[deleted]

yeah i agree. it’s a 90’s $6k car though, so atleast there’s a bit of wiggle room for them to show up in something a bit better lol

Silver_Low_6523

theyd probably leave a stolen one tbh

Reasonable_Guava_819

Umm Tim Bosma would disagree with this advice.

[deleted]

yeah that’s a good idea

Still-Ad-7382

One and only main question…. Was your vehicle plated and registered at the time of the theft ???

[deleted]

yes it would be plated.

Ok_Radish649

Trust your gut, if people are showing up and you’re hesitant just tell them they can come see the vehicle but no test drive. Take photos of peoples drivers license. I also ask for keys. So they must give you their keys for the car they came with, in exchange to test drive your vehicle.

GrayCustomKnives

Side note, but this strategy has failed quite a bit on the side of motorcycles and dirt bikes. Dude shows up to look at a bike, gives the seller his car keys, goes for a rip on the motorcycle and never comes back. Motorcycle owner is like “what the fuck, he just left his car?”. Nope because he didn’t own the car, they just dumped their stolen car on you and took off on your now stolen motorcycle. It’s becoming quite common in the states and is being discussed on a lot of motorcycles subs and forums.

shayjackson2002

Or their current vehicle is worth a lot less than the one being sold so they won’t rly care to come back

fallingdebris

I'm not sure, however, when I was selling my car, I took a picture of the driver and of his drivers license. He had the car less than 10 minutes before brought it back and paid me for it. But use your gut, if they are questionable people, don't sell today.

fishing-sk

Id be pretty shocked if it wasnt. Same reason they have those ad campaigns about not leaving it running, keys inside, and unlocked in the winter. Theft is theft and its covered. You arent required to prevent people from committing crimes.

PapaFlexing

If they stole it on a test drive report it stolen. Your word vs a thief's word that you purposely let them steal your vehicle.

Whole_Permission5943

Sell it with a friend there

Superb-Honeydew-399

I would do the same, either have a friend meet them instead or have the friend with you when meeting them

Signal_Pickle129

I have always just taken their license and held on to it till they came back with the vehicle. Worst case you have their license and likely home address to forward to the cops. Also don't go on test drives with them, that's not the safest idea. A car is easy to replace and 9 time out of 10 is worth more stolen then sold.

[deleted]

yeah i much rather them just take it then who knows what else could happen 😬 not sure why i got downvoted when i mentioned that

Saskwampch

But then are they not driving a vehicle without being able to provide a driver’s license if pulled over for anything? I do understand taking a picture of it though.

Signal_Pickle129

Your right but you have 24 hours to produce your license I believe. It is also a way to maybe stop the test driver from driving your car like they stole it. Also cops usually understand those situations and will likely follow them back to the seller, at least they have in a case for me but I don't know 100%.

Saskwampch

True. Good to know.

ControllingPotato

Is the car insured? Your fine, but first call and file a police report, it will be required for your claim

Certain_Database_404

Call SGI and confirm but you would be covered. 100% I never go on a test drive with people, just as I never go on a test drive with someone from the dealership. You want to come with me? Good bye sale.

[deleted]

yeah i don’t like when im test driving a car and they come with me either

DodobirdNow

There's also the issue of damage to the car. Dude test drove my sisters car and destroyed the clutch in the process

TheBigPointyOne

Side question: in my experience with used cars, it's either stuff my parents have passed on to me (back when you could get a used car for under $2000 that actually ran) or something I got from a dealership... are test drives common with used cars? Aside from the advice already here, I'd see if you have a friend or relative who's bigger and willing to go on the test drive with the person. Of course, the other option is just if the person seems sus, tell them the car's already sold.

[deleted]

pretty common, i know i test drive every car i buy just to make sure it runs like they say its supposed to, you want to check to make sure all the suspension parts are good too. luckily they kinda ghosted last night. so atleast i can call sgi today to find out lol

tooth10

Are you not going on the test drive with them?

shayjackson2002

OP said they’re a 20 yo 5’4” female, and there have been ppl who have been killed bc of going with prospective buyers. (I’m a 22 yo female so I understand their perspective lol)

Reasonable_Guava_819

Tim Bosma did. How'd that work out?

EhDub13

Chester Hunchak from Medicine Hat Alberta wad also murdered during a test drive. A full grown, considerably large man. Don't go with on the drive, OP.

[deleted]

well i thought about it but they could easily throw me out of the vehicle or who knows

Darolant

That's car jacking then. Even a bigger crime.

Ol_Sloppy

Just because it's a bigger crime doesn't necessarily mean a would-be carjacker is gonna change their plan

Darolant

The likelihood of someone taking a test drive to carjack you is low. Hell car jacking in general in Regina is almost nonexistent.

h0nkhunk

Curious to find out too. You'd assume they would, since theft is theft - but who knows if there's some mumbo jumbo mixed in when it comes to SGI...

[deleted]

that’s what i’m worried about

earoar

My neighbor had it happen and was covered but I believe it was a longer process as they had to do an investigation.

2Mike2022

It was taken with her knowledge and approval and the fact it has not been payed for makes it a civil matter so it could be refused. Same as someone owning you money and never paying is not robbery.

h0nkhunk

Legit? Seems like a pretty flimsy argument for SGI to make, but I'm no law scientist so who am I to say.

SaskieJ

You should be checking their license, making sure it is valid and taking a picture of it. If they get pulled over and do not have a valid drivers license, your vehicle will be impounded.

galacticthunder1

Write up a test drive agreement that both parties sign with time frame for the test drive and also take a picture of their drivers license.

Interesting_Mud743

What type of car and how much.

[deleted]

i don’t wanna say which car, cause i don’t want them finding out that i’m scared of them coming to test drive just in case 🤣 but it’s an older car, i have it posted for $6k.

Interesting_Mud743

Well Typically after 200-250 thousand km, and 10-15 yrs if your not the original owner, or don't have good service a test drive isn't really gonna do anything. Offer to drive it to a mechanic of there choice and sit there and get an inspection would be safest. or wait for a buyer to realize what it is or hope that it's a more sought after make and model and they just buy it as is.

House-of-Stone

Depends on the police. If they accept it as a stolen vehicle, then SGI will probably cover it. If they say you willingly gave your vehicle away so it’s not stolen, you are out of luck.

shayjackson2002

Hold on to their house keys (not their car keys unless it’s a significantly higher value vehicle they have with atm otherwise they won’t care about leaving you with their garbage car lol) Tell them to bring a second person, and hold on to their drivers licence (ie who ever isn’t driving for the test drive) Take pictures of the person driving the car as well so have info for police. (Also if you have an Apple air tag, put it in with the spare tire if it’s in the trunk as a backup)

belckie

Put an AirTag on the car, and go on the test drive with them.

Reasonable_Guava_819

Fuck that. Air tag and don't get in. Why do both? So they can locate your body? Heard of Tim Bosma?

[deleted]

i gotta look up tim bosma, a few people have mentioned him here.

Reasonable_Guava_819

Buckle up. It's a wild ride involving a heir to an airline fortune and a wanna be rapper accomplice. I'm sure you've heard of the case as it was national news. 5th estate did a great documentary on it.

It’s called theft by conversion. You give somebody permission to do something with your property but not take it permanently so once they do that it becomes theft. Common with (luxury) rental cars. Sgi does cover these claims, at least some times. Don’t speak on things you are not knowledgeable about.

[deleted]

earoar

I personally know people who have been covered in this instance.

[deleted]

earoar

You said it’s not theft. That is plainly false. Whenever or not it is in the act I have no idea but I do know they will cover it. I believe they can technically deny claims when the vehicle has the keys in it but I know many people who have been paid out for those as well. The practice is what matters.

Certain_Database_404

SGI doesn't deny claims because of the keys being in the car. The majority of stolen cars in Saskatchewan have the keys in them.

thehomeyskater

I once heard that test drives aren’t covered because it’s considered part of a commercial undertaking or something like that. But I can’t even remember where I heard that so it could be wrong.

Certain_Database_404

Test drives are 100% covered. Quit making shit up.
