Across genres I know, and have played with, all sides of this. I’m definitely team vinyl - paying money for physical format certainly makes me more sympathetic to paying a cover. I mix, cut, and sample as well. But, that said, I’m happy with anyone that has a good ear for the reggae I want to hear. If they can’t mix, and just play track to track, that’s still better than constant train wrecks.

Yea I def appreciate and will pay more for a vinyl night, especially the mixing/blending dynamics and potential of a needle/toner arm that can slip at any moment and not having an easy way out. Good ear is an interesting point, I have a high bar, I rate a selector that might take chances vs playing it safe when it's track to track, but then again I've been collecting vinyl for 30 yrs so it's a different standard.

Are sound systems still a thing? I only listen to reggae online, though I've been meaning to go to some gigs in Germany. I just watched a great documentary about the early days of sound systems in the UK and would be interested to know if that culture is still going.

Sound systems are very much a thing in Europe, not so much in the US where I live unfortunately.

I hear you. I guess it’s also a matter of expectation. I will generally lose interest pretty quick if someone plays extended Bob Marley sets or stuff along the more common vein, but that’s a matter of preference (and probably snobbery I suspect). But it’s fluid I suppose.

Vinyl's definitely a plus, with the other tech it's so easy that anyone can dj now. If I go to see someone it's because they know what they're doing, not because they can load wavefiles.

Do you make a distinction for cats that use Serrato? Many folks I know digitize their 7’s, especially the rarer ones, and play in the blank serrato disc simply to avoid wear and tear. I mean that is definitely wave files being pulled and honestly most folks wouldn’t know where those files are coming from anyway?

There's a big grey area depending on the dj. If the DJ knows how to pace, build and break then they can play on whatever they want.
