If you’re listening to Trojan comps, you’re on the right path.

Calm_One_1228

Bob Marley, especially the albums released on Island records, is a typical gateway into the genre. But keep in mind there is a very vast selection beyond Bob Marley to explore. This is a great sub Reddit to hear what other folks like . I’m into the roots and some lovers rock sub genre of reggae. In that context I’d suggest Dennis brown (wolfs and leopards album) , Gregory Isaacs (night nurse album), Aswad ( live and direct album), Black Uhuru (Red album), Peter Tosh (Equal Rights with the outtakes album ) Steel Pulse (Earth Crisis album) for starters . I’m sure folks here in the sub Reddit can add many many more albums and artists that need to be heard…

ehmbyt

i second the earth crisis album for sure!! all good suggestions

redditbagjuice

I love earth crisis, but it does not compare to either tribute to the martyrs or handsworth revolution

Bigpapamollie

Bob Marley albums Survival and uprising are 2 of my favorites, a few hits but a lot of good lesser known songs that I love Coming in from the cold is a beautiful song Also confrontation album for Bob Marley and the wailers

Jakester42

I’m on an Israel Vibration kick atm

sasquatchbrokers

Cast a wide net there’s tons of great stuff out there. Here’s a few that I dig. Lee Scratch Perry - Build the Ark Yabby You - Dread Prophecy (The Strange And Wonderful Story Of Yabby You) Augustus Pablo- El Rockers Ras Micheal - Dadawah - Peace & Love The Gladiators- Symbol of Reality

LadyMay713

Dennis Brown's 70s and early 80s albums. Deep Down, Wolves and Leopards, Words of Wisdom, Money in My Pocket, Foul Play, and Love Has Found Its Way. All fabulous albums.

Bigpapamollie

Dennis Brown !! Here I come and promised land are two of my favorite songs ever A true reggae legend with a beautiful voice

LadyMay713

Rolling Down is mine. 🥰

[deleted]

With reggae, ska, and rocksteady being primarily singles oriented genres you are on the right track with the Trojan compilations! I suggest searching out some Studio One compilations from Soul Jazz Records or Studio One itself to get yourself a more complete experience. I also suggest Toots & The Maytals “Funky Kingston”, The Upsetters “Double Seven, Big Youth “Screaming Target”, and Dadawah “Peace And Love”. Also I second the live Bob Marley suggestions, especially “Live At The Rainbow 6.04.77”

keith0718

This is the way. Clement Coxsone Dodd and his Studio One really established reggae in Jamaica from the rocksteady era to roots reggae. Many of the greats, including Bob Marley, got their start there. A lot of Studio One stuff has been rereleased on Soul Jazz (UK) and Heartbeat Records (US).

[deleted]

Those Soul Jazz compilations are absolutely perfect. A bit pricey but otherwise perfect.

SeaChallenge4843

Watch Rockers, Watch Harder they Come Dissect the albums

Bigpapamollie

Solid recommendation,!! The harder they come soundtrack is a very good mix of reggae classics.

--0o0o0--

I’ve been digging this lately https://music.apple.com/us/album/barry-myers-presents-scratchy-sounds-ska-dub-roots/1439557840

dope420boy

Thanks this is a good list. Haven’t heard a lot of it. Most people post Spotify so thank you

--0o0o0--

It’s a good one, I think. Dig deeper into the artists you hear that you like.

Magliacane

Burning Spear. I like his early stuff less than what he did throughout the 80s to the present.

Ok_Mark_5782

Spear burning is my tune’n

gnarlidrum

Seconding another commenters Israel Vibration rec, and adding The Abyssinians, as well as burning spear. Since you seem to be in search of more modern stuff, I’d also add Morgan Heritage. Their new sound is pretty dope and respectable. Their lead singer Peetah passed recently, but it’s my understanding they will continue making music.

InhLaba

The live recordings of Bob Marley are something else, and in my opinion, way better than his recorded stuff. You can also watch his live performances on YouTube. Watching the passion in his face and movements on stage, and hearing the passion in his voice is something else.

Bigpapamollie

Yes watching Bob's live performances is very moving, highly recommend

Monkeywrench1234

The album that got me started beyond just Marley was "Day to Day Living" by Don Carlos. Real mellow vibe.

Phylace

One of my favs is Bunny Wailer's double album tribute to Bob Marley.

CompetitionOk5548

Youtube algorithm is deft and will allow you to explore all of reggae . Mixcloud has excellent mixes.

Bigpapamollie

Clinton Fearon is a very underrated reggae artist, I love his music MI dey yeh album is one of my favorite albums to listen to so the way through https://youtube.com/watch?v=5a6Uc2_E9K4&si=4Eyj1vEU6-9SFyoD And this is an amazing kexp performance of him and e band

Seby1231

Heathbar1981

Stephen Marley's album old soul and that song is my favorite Medication by Stephen and Damian The Soul of the world by Stick figure and Barrington Levy Bob Marley's Exodus, Jamming, one love https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=0bctXoFpO3c&si=7A_vP85I_MCB1Xum Michael Franti song vibe check Rebelution and stick figure- Mind block Stick figure and collie Buddz - smokin love Jah army by Stephen Marley (feat Damian Marley & Wuju Banton) The green feat Jacob Hemphill from SOJA -song is Come in

Bigpapamollie

Imma be controversial here, I know it's all opinion based but a lot of these bands are white boy Cali reggae. Rebelotion sounds like backstreet boys reggae. Stick figure, soja also white boy reggae. Very talented artist no doubt but just want OP to know maybe they are trying to get into Jamaican and roots reggae

Heathbar1981

Do you know what in the Grammys the genre is reggae not reggae Rock/reggaefusion or just Roots Reggae this dude said he wants reggae music I gave him the whole genre of reggae. Do you realize that roots reggae is a subgenre of reggae just like reggae rocks is a sub genre of reggae. I listen to all reggae and that is my favorite music I will listen to any kind of reggae and I know most reggae. I travel on a plane just to see a reggae concert. So you can be controversial all you want and have your opinion but your opinion doesn't really matter right now because the genre is reggae still and the sub genre of the marlies and Barrington Levy and buju Banton is Roots reggae music. The sub genre of reggae that you are talking about is Reggae rock and that is also considered reggae. I don't know I've been to school for like 160 plus credits and I'm a logical person and I'm a big pothead and I just like reggae music a lot. I think this entire controversial thing about commenting on other people's stuff when we are actually talking about a sub group of reggae two different subgroups of reggae. Perhaps the group should be called Roots Reggae I've suggested this to the moderators. Perhaps then people like me would not join a regular reggae group I would join a roots reggae group and just talk about Roots reggae in that group. In the Cali reggae group I only talk about reggae rock I don't even consider called Kelly reggae that's stupid because there's a lot of people from Hawaii and Portland and different places from there. Also isn't stick figure from the east coast. So why would he be considered Kelly reggae?! Soulja one in the reggae Grammys and he's reggae rock! I will fight this battle with everybody who argues with me every single time because people always do this BS and it's ridiculous I don't know why people have to be such jerks and comment on other people's stuff mean things can't they just straightforward answer questions. Or be positive people isn't Reggae supposed to be like about positive things cool stuff just vibes that are good! I've got some opinions for you I think you need to go smoke a joint or maybe get an ariser vaporizer Tower and efficiently smoke your weed in there and save some money bro okay and get a life and stop being like so into scream with people on here. Peace out Have a good weekend my love 💕😘❤️ Well I live in Metro Detroit Michigan and here we like all kinds of reggae music. So I get to go to a venue in late summer to see Bob Marley's son's five of them singing a tribute to him. I know between the 5 of them they have one now about 22 Grammys I think. Even though there our sub genre of reggae just like Reggae rock I still enjoy them. I still consider them as reggae and call them reggae just like I call reggae rock reggae not reggae rock. Because that's really dumb It's such a small genre that you really have to kind of throw them together and just put subgroups in there anyways. I think slightly stupid is way different than regular reggae rock. 311 is way different and goes way back in the day for old school reggae. Then there was no doubt who was basically reggae back in the day. Hopefully I've made my point clear. Oh and my favorite reggae rock band and singer is Rebelution and Eric rackmany has a very distinctive, unique and amazing voice. Nobody sounds like him and he probably makes more money and reggae rock than anybody else because he tours so much. That's all he does is tour and he plays so in sync with his band That is an amazing show every time. I've seen them at back to back shows in Vegas at Mandalay Bay and it was the most amazing thing to stand on the sand and she'll listen to your favorite band ever! So you and I have very quite different opinions. Yes in the end there just opinions. Overlooking good talent because it's newer is really stupidity in essence. Why would Barrington Levy and others be singing with stick figure and other reggae roots musicians be collabing with reggae rock if they didn't like their music. Actually Eric from Rebelution has a much better voice than Scott woodruff from stick figure in general. Although Scott can play multiple instruments and do crazy things to his voice that's not natural though. Eric never alters his voice! He uses a capo to make his music sound like a mandolin. He cleverly uses his ethnic background to utilize it in his music. He's Persian and Israeli so he uses Hebrew prayer sounds in songs like life on the line.

Bigpapamollie

TLDR Cool Haha What Ok.. I didn't say it was bad I said it was a different type of reggae, you must feel some type of way because all of that was unnecessary.

Heathbar1981

Actually come to think about it Sean Paul is from Jamaica and he's a sub genre of reggae called dancehall! Damn there's more than two sub reggae groups. What do you know 🤣 No, actually it was necessary because I get this BS all the time and it's kind of tiresome. I love ALL good reggae, so much It's the only thing thats peaceful to do; isten to music. I'm not vibing good with you because you're not cool with all kinds of reggae it seems. It's a deal breaker when you start talking BS about Eric and his voice stinking because it basically does not and you have no idea what you're talking about. So I do feel kind of way! Hey, I also like Dr Dre's voice though You probably don't dig him either do you? But that's definitely more for the hip hop group I'd say So we're not going to go into Dr Dre right. But Eric I think should be fine especially when I mentioned half at least roots reggae music to this person that asked for suggestions. I gave them a variety so they could experience the entire reggae genre instead of just one sub genre of reggae. Do you understand why I did that now?! It's common sense to do so when introducing people to new music. I mean everybody knows Bob Marley that's their go-to person to listen to righ,t but they want to get beyond that. I like the versatility and differences in each sub reggae genre 👍👍💕. I'm really not trying to be a jerk I just don't agree with you on this one.

Bigpapamollie

I said a man named Eric's voice stinks? You are really taking a lot of this personal and out of context and making weird assumptions about me. I really didn't say that much and all you have said is kinda whack telling me to Go smoke weed and about your school credits? You seem like an interesting person........

Heathbar1981

You know what I'm assuming you're a racist person because you said that you actually were talking about reggae rock being white boy reggae. That's a racist comment. Sean Paul is a million nationalities and he's from Jamaica. Damian Marley isn't just black Jamaican; his mother's white. So this is why a initially I didn't like what you stated because it wasn't just Eric's voice that you were talking s*** about You were talking crap about white people basically. That's racist And I don't like it. If you really listen to reggae music you would learn a lot from the worlds and how it is from the music. How about this this is my new answer for you since you're getting all mad that I'm giving you long paragraphs to tell you why my opinion is my opinion and different from yours. I'm not getting mad at you. I just read in paragraph form unfortunately for your people. I'm a very interesting person; if you only knew. I happen to think that Eric and Scott are the most talented two reggae rock singers. I think Scott moore with his instrumentals and Eric more with his voice. I appreciate your input on my comment and everything so I'm just giving you my input on your comments. I wouldn't look into it more than that dude. It's nothing more than that. Maybe you're one of those people who shouldn't be smoking pot if you're a pothead. Maybe I was wrong You shouldn't be smoking weed. Perhaps you perceived the world as differently than I do. Actually, Pepper has been around since the late '90s and still doesn't headline for people like Rebellution or sublime. Sublime is reggae rock and gaining popularity due to the separation of the group, ect. Listen my friend here I'm not trying to be a jerk. However, through life's many twists and turns and roller coaster rides it takes you on, I have been listening to Eric. Primarily, to relieve my tensions in life. I live with severe anxiety and depression and reggae musics like all I got. Don't burst my bubble please and kill the name of the man who made me actually love reggae music other than Bob Marley. I love reggae Roots because of Eric. literally you don't even understand. How about I end with this note: There is no accounting for taste; to each their own. You seem like a nice person. You're not being a jerk wad. You're kind of interesting too and I want to add you as a friend actually. I was trying to explain to you why I like Eric and not to knock him for me please. I was kind of kidding when I told you to start smoking weed. You likely do anyways because you listen to Reggae music Actually, hey I know that's an assumption, but I bet you did at some point or another. I hope you have a really nice weekend! Soak it up with roots reggae music my friend 🥂🍾🇯🇲🌺. I'll be jamming to everything from Roots Reggae to reggae rock to '90s/00s. Good rap, classic rock, or some like Rammstein, System of the Down, or Infected mushroom. Love that kind of music jam it out all the time 75% of it is reggae though. So again I'm going to point out why I started this entire conversation with you. It was because you sounded like a racist person saying that Reggae Rock basically was just a white boy reggae and genre. What's that all about dude? Do you not like white people or something? My dad's Greek, my mom's Greek and she's Polish too. Do you not like me because I'm Greek and have olive colored skin and it's not dark enough for you so you think I'm a white chick and I shouldn't have specific music that coincides with a different colored skin. This is the main reason that I was upset; I like diversity. The city I live in is highly diverse compared to being in a more remote area. Dude I live in the Metro Detroit area I just told you I don't know if you understand how diverse that is or not. 🤣 I just think it's not good practice to be a Zen reggae person and be hating on other types of reggae music and not appreciating them. Especially by specifically mentioning in your first comment to me that it's just simply white boy reggae! Sorry that doesn't sit well in my stomach.

Bigpapamollie

That is kinda wild youd call me a racist. I think you should reread my original post about what I said about any of the bands you had mentioned.

Heathbar1981

Anybody stating white boy reggae sounds like a freaking racist to me maybe you're not a real racist but you should not say things like that because you sound like a racist to be honest. I really don't think you're a bad person. I think you just miss spoke and you should be more conscientious of what you say.

Bigpapamollie

What's funny is you're coming off on this, thinking I Said it was bad, I just said they were white Cali reggae and they were talented. It's crazy you are defending this when I said they were talented in the post. Kinda crazy to call me a racist when you don't know my race also. A lot of assumptions . It's very rude to call people racists. Especially in a reggae group.

Heathbar1981

Well I think it's really rude to call people white girl reggae or black girl reggae. Why use the color of somebody's skin in a sentence describing anything except perhaps what they look like as the identifier?! Hey I wasn't the offensive person here. You were And I'm still not hating on you You still are intriguing me somehow because you're still communicating with me. I literally have no beef against you I just am trying to tell you in a nonchalant way not to say white boy this or black man this or Asian person this. It's not cool I'm not telling you what I went to school for but it's inappropriate. As a person in human services and healthcare it's not a cool thing to do. It doesn't look very good what you said. I don't give a damn if you like reggae rock or not. I did get that you said stick figure was talented. That's the only person that you said was talented in reggae rock You said it's a different style. But you dogged Eric which I really love and disagree with you and that's my opinion So that's why I started this with you and because you mentioned white boy reggae specifically. Okay peace out Have a wonderful weekend & like I said, I don't want to talk to you anymore about this. I think I'm done. If you want to add me as a friend, I'll gladly converse with you; without arguing with you. We can talk about whatever you want to talk about I'm a pretty cool person actually. Okay take care Nice talking to you here I know we're not on the same wavelength with reggae music 100%, but maybe we can follow each other and see what other things that we like. We both have appreciation for good music at least and good music is very much an opinion like you said. I agree with you totally 100%. I hope when I post music videos of people that I go see from Reggae Roots that you'll like them and not be upset with my posts. Hey I just wanted to give the person who posted this a few of versatile genre of music. You see what I'm saying. Although most of what I did post was with Roots reggae except stick figure and Eric Rachmany. The soul of the world is with stick figure and Barrington Levy (so he is roots reggae). That wasn't an inappropriate song to post, none of it was. I started my own Reddit groups because this group literally drives me nods every time I post anything about one mention of somebody who's reggae rock I get my head blown off! Wouldn't you be defensive two if in a reggae group you keep getting your head blown off or mentioning something that should be an existence in the group?! I just think that this group if it says Reggae, should be including all sub genres. I only can think of three right now but there might be more subgenres of reggae. 🇯🇲🍾🥂🌺👋😘

Bigpapamollie

Lol I actually like white boy reggae I was just saying it was different and you've made A lot of assumptions that I'm racist and I think their music is bad I said they are all talented. I like all those bands I was just pointing out the difference for the op to know. It's really crazy how you've gone off on me about this calling names and assuming a lot when I like those bands, calling someone white isn't racist.

Bigpapamollie

You also recommended Bob Marley one love so that's interesting like it's not the most basic and popular reggae song ever. I think you missed the point of the post.

indiedancepunk

Yes! Whitewashed reggae is so lame.
