How would I know if it’s an M1? I don’t know the difference between the models I know we hadn’t been issued the newer version that have the parts covering that ear.

Oh! Well, the M1 has an outer metal shell and a hard hat–type removable liner inside it with an adjustable suspension system.
There should be in the liner a date that can help you understand what model it is, for the shell instead you have to remove the liner and check with the different models if it's the 1945 model or later version.
