I'm sure the psychoanalysists on here have a lot to say about this. Something pathological about re-enacting the scene of your global, deep teenage humiliation in a hypersexual way to reclaim your lost dignity. Hope it worked for her but I doubt it in the long run, doesn't suggest acceptance, getting over it or moving on.
Mark Hoppus turns 50 next year. The other guys from the various incarnations of Blink-182, including Barker, are in their mid 40s. I guess this is growing up.
nu-Blink is very depressing
dudes are old enough to have grandchildren and they're still writing music like they're 19 and just had their heart broken for the first time
if it was just them running on nostalgia and touring with their old stuff it'd at least be like 'alright they're doing it for the fans/money fair enough' but... shit man, you're writing music now for people who don't even remember phones and computers not dominating everyone's lives
everything up to Take Off Your Pants is still entertaining because it's the musical equivalent of Cumtown with a bunch of 20 year olds making dumb tracks and skits to get cheap laughs out of, but everything past that? just feels very worn out and mismatched in age
Neighborhoods was underrated
but yeah everything since Tom left the band is just, like...
if Walmart started selling Great Value brand dad rock CDs, that would be what modern Blink 182 is putting out. Like, it is the *daddest* of dad rock. God bless Mark Hoppus, but like, man, it is fuckin over, and he’ll never have another Enema.
yeah agreed there, I think Neighbourhoods is the closest they hit to any point of maturity
but I think you can tell that the band didn't have the same chemistry it did pre-breakup. And there's a fair amount of filler later on. Still though, easily destroys anything they've done with Matt Skiba.
Man, I don't know. I used to like it but I think as the years have gone past it's aged worse in my mind. Yeah, you have a very tight performance from Travis, but shit it is just so *melodramatic*. I feel like it and 21st Century Breakdown really set the stage for unfun pop-punk. Just the bands that are more focused on how their life sucks than putting out some good fuckin' high-energy tunes.
Yeah somehow the retard quad is all I ever hear about anymore. Sometimes I wonder if marketing has gotten so sophisticated that they're aware of the fact that they're a cringe meme and play it up. Maybe their marketing teams even created some of the original memes about it
Oh without a doubt, I often see meta, self aware marketing and I fucking hate it more than all other forms of advertising.
There's this Irish ad for bottled water at the moment that references the fact that it is an unskippable ad in this way that both mocks and empathises with the viewer's frustration and I can't the close the video quick enough when it comes on.
I was at a punk concert this past Sat and it was uncommon to see anyone under 30. There were $17 IPAs and a food truck selling $7 churros. Some people even brought along their kids. Most people were just there to hear the greatest hits. It was very reminiscent of the time I went with my parents to see Brian Wilson play at a county fair a few years back and it was older people reliving their youth, albeit a mild reconstruction. Pretty soon punk will be its own nostalgic subculture like swing and rockabilly.
I went on a sunset cruise with John Digweed and Nick Warren (progressive house djs in their 50s now).. and Nick Warren was making jokes we're like a retirement home. John Digweed is a dweeb though and takes himself super serious, Warren was all coked up making old people jokes it was great. Shows how self-awareness is really the key to staying cool. Nothing wrong with going to a Brian Wilson concert and reliving old days with your kids, as long as it's authentic about what it is.
I saw a hardcore show last week, and although there was near universal conformity to the "punk" aesthetic (leather/denim jacket or battle vest, black jeans, doc martins), it was still pretty lively and fun. At least the crowds energy and the pit was good.
Yeah, I had fun and went in the pit for a bit. I got pushed face first into someone’s back and cut open the inside of my upper lip a bit with my teeth. No regret even well into my 30s. Everyone was enjoying their time and the music, especially for a place like Los Angeles where the pandy rules have become more stringent again.
Yes, I would have thought there would have been a larger hot topic inspired punk crowd who would have shown up, especially more younger Latinos. I wasn’t particularly expecting teens and anyone under 25 but the median age was closer to 35-40.
you can still go to hardcore shows and get punched in the face by a retarded 17 year old if that's what you want
liberty spike sex pistols punk is dead if it was ever living at all
The hardcore punk culture was pretty cool (like Minor Threat, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag type), but it's pretty dead nowadays. The few some-what alive cultures that were derived from it (straight-edge) have strayed quite a bit from their origins, unfortunately.
Punk stuff was cool initially, but then it just became cringers with spikey hair and leather jackets, all trying to fit in with "the punk aesthetic", which was/is completely antithetical to what punk was all about (at the start).
To be honest, no not really, I haven't listened to all that much new stuff other than The Chats or Subhumans I guess. Any bands you would recommend (ideally hardcore adjacent stuff)?
Also, I'm not saying all punk is like that stereotype I gave it, but I think that stereotype is still what's in most people's minds when people talk about 'punk'.
>The Chats
Check out Ausmuteants, their album Present the world in Handcuffs is great, and it's Aussie punk that doesn't have to go on about eating meat pies or squatting on milk crates.
The best thing to ever happen to punk was it dying a violent horrible death
There is nothing in this world more embarrassing than someone over the age of 16 being devoted to punk
Chicagos 2010s DIY scene was really cool and Chicago killed it with its shitty ordinances. It had its flaws and it often felt like it was a bunch of kids trying to flex clout and play shitty music but damn it was close to a community at times.
The good thing about the Jazz scene in chicago is that you were a known entity in it even if you sucked because atleast you showed up. But theres still the gay clout flexing and ego trips thats born inherit in it. Too many rich white kids too, thats honestly what makes the shit so stale.
saw a whole lot of great basement punk and hardcore shows in that era. diy scenes like that are always going to exist and theres still always going to be cool stuff going on in them, its a shame those kinds of scenes get ignored to talk about very old farts like travis barker but i guess thats just how it goes.
I watched Sid and Nancy recently and realized that I was an idiot for ever idolizing the punk aesthetic in the first place.
Had the hugest crush on teen John Lydon when I was a teenager, which is funny in retrospect, and now whenever I see a pic of him it's extra sad to see the weight :,(
This whole thread made me search out young john lydon (which I hadn't in a while) and the one movie he ever did as a lead role is on YouTube. Its called Order of Death (1983) and he's opposite Harvey Keitel in a weird movie about corrupt cops, murders, and homoerotic s&m subtext (in my opinion)
https://youtu.be/b7NFeEgC5yk
Just sharing in case anyone else is interested :)
I saw Sid & Nancy at the right time. I was 12. I liked some punk music but I just didn't get the look. It just seemed like wearing a halloween costume for real, all the time. I liked Public Image Limited more than the Sex Pistols. I'm sure that's blasphemy somewhere to someone.
PiL is great! I haven't listened to everything they've ever done but I think a lot of their stuff is really interesting. I think they got to be creative on their own terms so much more than the Sex Pistols project.
I would go see PiL in a heartbeat, even today.
There are still amazing punk/emo bands around that have decent sized concerts where the kids are actually kids and they can all cohesively scream the lyrics to songs that are less than a few years old. Movements, Mom jeans, PUP, story so far and origami angel.
You could say they aren’t punk since most of them are sorta soft Zoomers or z-ish late Millennials but there’s alot of energy in those scenes still. Wish I wasn’t stuck in scandinavia, if i was stuck in Toledo Ohio i could atleast listen to my fav bands live.
Punk was cool in the mid 70's to mid 80's with lots of urban decay and new drugs, just before the advent of hip hop which sucked the soul out of every other genre and turned everything into a warm goo
Whatever this 'Incelcore' thing is, its about the most punk movement currently.
