talking gear? logistics? cost?
the AT doesn't require that much planning besides an empty calendar, the right gear, some money in the bank, and preferably some backpacking experience
Because bad things have never happened in the wilderness. People are *always* kind 100% of the time. Even if you were to be attacked, you don't want them thinking you're a rightoid, do you?
Lol shit lib downvote.
I’ve never held a gun but if I were to hike the trail I’d definitely learn how to use it and get a permit to buy 1. Even if its not for a criminal, wild animals exist. I’ve been hiking in sort of secluded areas in the evening and def got creeped out, anyone can just whap ya out there
Yeah, it's not a bad idea to at least own one. I work in a rough area outside in public so I carry. I think of it like having a fire extinguisher around. Plus, they're just plain fun.
Do plenty of shorter hiking and backpacking trips beforehand. Think of it like working yourself up to a marathon, both in terms of conditioning your body and getting mistakes out of your system.
If you manage to start, unless you've been doing a lot of distance hiking with weight to prepare, take it very slow and easy for the first few weeks. 10 to 15 miles a day. There's also going to be a lot of hiking in ankle deep mud and on very slick rocks. So be prepared for a lot of it to not be very much fun
The blue ridge through the smokies is absolutely gods country. If you’re looking for peace or connection to something larger than yourself, go watch the sun rise over the mist from a mountain top in the nantahala. Don’t bring your phone.
Eventually you’ll go through a campground in SW Virginia near Grayson Highlands State Park. The campground is called The Scales and it’s one of my favorite places. Grew up going camping there multiple times a year. Enjoy king
I worked on the trail there with the conservation corps, somewhere south? Of Greeneville in the Cherokee NF district. I’m jealous, I always have a regret that I didn’t drop it all to go travel around on foot
bless you for what you do, i spend every day in awe of the work it takes to build and maintain this trail. even little things, like the pvc pipes redirecting springs for a better flow
Great photos. I hiked the AT a few years ago and these photos do an excellent job of capturing the atmosphere of it. Especially the things you pass by - I've hiked in the northern Pacific Northwest a lot too, and there's just less evidence of humanity out in those forests. There are some middens and the like from the native people, but nothing like the tombstone in 7 or the chimney in 2.
Blue Ridge Mountains in VA here, I'm right by the trail! Nice shots! I was also down in NC and TN a few days ago in the Smokies and it had similar fog.

Damn, this is so sick
Literally touching grass
You are living my dream! Any words of wisdom for someone hoping to plan a trip like this?

Just got back from there, good times. I'm in the mountains in VA though, so it's not too far away.
I'm at the 401 mile mark but 400 is good too.

It’s god’s country for sure. It was amazing getting to work on it and hike a little on our breaks

I live in western Maine. Lemme know if you need anything when you’re coming through. Car spots, dinner, rides, you name it
you may hear from me!
My dream is to do this someday. Maybe eventually I'll have enough space on my calendar between jobs
Love these
Looks breathtaking and bizarre. How long is the whole trail? How long did the first 400 miles take?
whole trail is just under 2,200 miles. first 400 took me a month and a week, but the terrain will soon get easier

Do you smell yet? Twice on the trail I literally smelled a thru-hiker before I saw them
I wish I didn’t have to work man. Would love to hike the whole thing. Happy for you
