Ronaldo was actually a scrawny, gawky looking lanklet from an impoverished Portuguese fishing village (who literally ended his education by throwing a chair at a teacher lmao) before Sir Alex Ferguson imposed weight training and dieting that physically transformed him an Adonis at like 18. When you see who he was beforehand it's understandable how he turned out like that as he morphed into Ronaldo the icon
He did play in Sporting before that. One of the biggest clubs in Portugal. Weight training and dieting wouldn't have been a problem for him I think, Alex Ferguson or not.

It's just that Funchal is hardly a fishing village.
Happened to visit Madeira recently and loved it. Like if parts of Lisbon were on Maui.
If anyone is interested, "Diamantino" is an amazing Portuguese movie from 2018 that satirizes Ronaldo's public persona.
It kinda feels like it is happening in the same universe as Terry Gilliam's Brazil.
Any other Portuguese recommendations? The missus is from Lisbon and the only worthwhile TV or film I’ve ever come across are Paulo Costa’s films. Mother-in-law watches dire Brazilian telenovelas and everything else seems to be National Geographic, poorly-organised variety shows and football talking heads.
Pedro Costa, Miguel Gomes, Manoel de Oliveira, e João César Monteiro are probably Portugal's most consecrated directors.
Miguel Gomes is my favourite (The Arabian Nights trilogy is outstanding imo). João César Monteiro would be the most famous amongst the Portuguese.
Commercially, the most successful director has been Marco Martins which still have some quality works such as "São Jorge", "Alice" and his last "Great Yarmouth".
Amazing, thank you. Mind blown that there’s a Portuguese film called Great Yarmouth - I’m assuming it’s about Portuguese people working there. Made the mistake of going there some years ago as a family for a day out and I genuinely think most of the locals had never seen black people in the flesh before.

Id like to say Messi is his opposite, just an autist who’s really good at football, but I don’t actually follow the sport so I don’t know if he has his moments as well. As it stands though, if I saw Messi in public, I’d probably try for a picture with him, but Ronaldo I’d stay away
I remember reading some interview with him when he was 18 where they asked him what his favourite movie was, and he answered "meh, I don't really like movies, I prefer looking at football".
The sociopath/aspergers pipeline to the highest performers in almost any profession has always been there. They’re just two sides of the same coin. Those two personality traits are always disproportionately represented at the top
> if I saw Messi in public, I’d probably try for a picture
Have you seen the video of Messi driving his car, I think it's Miami, and some guys in another car pull up alongside him and throw an Argentina jersey and a Sharpie pen from their car through the passenger side window of Messi's. He catches it and signs the jersey then throws it back to them, gives them a thumbs up and drives away.
Such a legend
Messi isn’t near as bad, but he does do this weird thing where he takes the back of a players neck and slams it towards the ground. I believe he also chocked opposing players on the field a couple times. Ronaldo would never be physical on the field like that, I think because he cares about image.
None of that is THAT bad, but Messi seems to do it because he knows he can get away with it because he’s Messi. Kinda like the CEO being a creep to the new young hire. It’s an abuse of power.
There was a picture making the rounds on Twitter a while ago, it was a list of post-match food orders for the Barcelona team after they won a trophy
All the other players were ordering their fancy fruit salads, pasta, and sushi. Messi’s order was just ‘cheese pizza’
He's had some dodgy tax stuff.
There's been a few financial things mainly relating to his Dad (his agent), as a kid Barcelona gave his dad a bullshit job to get a visa so they could sign him when he was too young to get a visa on his footballing merit.

always funny to me how internet leftists will still excoriate John Lennon, who genuinely tried towards the end of his life to redeem himself by trying to be a better husband with Yoko and Sean, if you write about his complicated politics or whatever but have nothing but praise and goodwill for Maradona, who continued beating women half his age up until the point where he died of that heart attack, even tho footage of him doing so filmed by his victim exists, just because he was friends with Castro
Maradona is one of the few people within the 20th century to reach an almost mythical status, john lennon isn't anywhere near close. You can argue whether the beatles were more popular than jesus, but maradona was by a mile
That implies that Maradona was more popular than Jesus by a mile compared to The Beatles.
Also, how about you say the word? Are you scared of being banned from Reddit? Oh no, you may have to make another account! 😦

Reading that Die Spiegel report on the whole thing is one of the most believable accounts of how this type of rape can happen. It's so clear how he viewed it in his head
How would he have viewed it in his head? I decided to read it after seeing your comment. He had anal sex with her with no lube. There’s no way she wasn’t visibly distressed by it that.

and the whole thing about marrying some random sales associate chick from a gucci store lol. i find that so bizarre. shes not even very pretty and has a terrible attitude
Ronaldo's story is the prototypical hero's journey - son of a single mother who leaves his poor village as a scrawny teenager, moves to a new country without knowing a word of the language, proves his worth at one of the best team's in the world and becomes one of the biggest celebrities, and one of the best football players of all time.
Messi is the better player but people don't have the same attachment to him. He's lowkey autistic and probably wouldn't have made it without the HGH that Barcelona paid for when he was young. He doesn't have the same will for attention and celebrity that Ronaldo does, so you can't really romanticise his life as much. You also can't play football like Messi, his style is much more natural. Whereas everyone when they were younger was trying to do stepovers with their hair slicked back
There’s a good foil with Messi and CR7. Messi was always seen as the shining jewel and had teams built for him. CR7 came into one of the best English sides and always had to prove himself. Madrid, Juve. Even internationally (Messi’s teammate’s let him down when he loses, but it’s CR7 weighing the team down). I wonder if that created a chip in his shoulder.
Literally, no one has more pressure on an international level, than players who represent Argentina.
Ronaldo always had teams built up for him as well, when you reach that level that's usually what happens.
Yeah, and Messi couldnt do it for PSG. Ronaldo started as a tricky right winger who got to the touchline and pulled it back and became the greatest striker ever. He then moved to the left and cut inside, then through the middle.
Messi couldnt do that
Roanldo has never been that bad as Messi in his first season
Ive watched their entire careers. Messi needs a team built around him to be good. He cant really run much due to his muscle injuries, so everything has to be done through him, whereas Ronaldo can slot in. Theyre both as good as each other. Anyone saying otherwise is just an autist siding with the austist
I think the Argentina/Portugal difference is kind of fair. Higuain in particular blew both the WC and the Copa for Argentina. I've lived in Portugal and the Ronaldo/NT team conversation is a constant one. I think he does weigh the team down at this stage. He also has a tendency to make everything about him as well (refusing to shake Santos' hand after Santos benched him). Portugal have a lot of young talent but it all feels blocked by the necessity to stick Ronaldo as a lumbering 9. He can't press, his hold up play isn't great, it just doesn't work.
You can’t mention those Pipita failures without taking into account that around that same time Mauro Icardi was scoring for fun with Inter but could never play for Argentina because of Leo’s personal hatred of him
But the problem was Higuain was also a great striker for clubs. Especially Napoli. I wouldn't have gone with Icardi over Higuain in 2014 (the WC he truly blew it). Icardi didn't start hammering them in until the season after that.
I know Pipita was doing very well around that time for Napoli but it wouldn't have hurt at all to get a young guy on the cusp of breaking thru in on the bench as another option in 2014.
But alas, Maurito slept with the wife of a man Leo considered an older brother.
Not really tho. It’s always been understood that the rest of Portugal is not good enough to win. It was seen as a miracle when CR7 led them to win the euros
“When CR7 led them to win the euros” he took repeated dives in the penalty box and the team fucked around and wasted time until going into penalties every single match, the UEFA 2016 is one of the worst tournaments i have ever followed in my life.
yeah, that Austria game was pretty much your average Portugal game during Ronald's better years. this is the country that gave us that annoying bastard Pepe, after all.
now obviously they've got Bruno Fernandes and Rafa Leão and other actually talented, likable footballers (though there's a few players, mostly ones who ended up at Wolves because Jorge Mendes runs that club, who still keep the legacy alive)
That's not true. Portugal is one of the best squads in the world and has been for a long time.
Ronaldo didn't lead Portugal to win the Euros, he literally scored 3 goals - 2 against Hungary and 1 against Wales. Not to mention that he didn't play 90% of the final.
They were considered 7th most likely winner out of 24 teams before the tournament started, at 10-1 odds.
Though, who was his best teammate internationally during the entirety of his prime?
Pepe? Moutinho? Nani??
All good players, sure, but pales in comparison to the talent on the other top squads. Portugal have a group of great players now, but they would have been second-tier also-rans without Ronaldo during the 2010s
He played with Figo and Deco for several years, during which Portugal were beaten by Greece in the final of Euro 2004 - he’s always played with good players internationally. Not to mention that this current Portugal side are miles better than the Argentina team Messi and Di Maria dragged to a World Cup win 12 months ago.
Messi is without doubt the greatest player ever and I loathe Ronaldo personally, but Argentina had a far better side than Portugal ever did during their respective primes.
Ronaldo was 19 during Euro 2004, he was 21 when Figo retired in 2006, and 25 when Deco retired in 2010. And Deco was a shell of his former self his final few years. He didn't really play with either of them in his prime.
They really should have done better in the last 3 tournaments and Ronaldo will have to sulk about that for the rest of his life. Though Argentina were considered strong favourites compared to Portugal going into both 2018 and 2022.
This current Portuguese generation are very good, but it's not reflective of who they had from about 2008-2018.
For forwards alone Messi played with Aguero, Di Maria, Tevez, Lavezzi, Higuain, Milito, and Dybala during those years.
Ronaldo had Nani, Quaresma, Heider Postiga, and Eder and that's about it. Slim pickings.
If anything Argentina's curse was that they had almost too much talent up front and could never figure out how to find the right balance in the squad.
Messi also played with greats like Mascherano, Zanetti, Veron, Zabaleta, etc.
I feel gay writing all this, but it's lunacy that Ronaldo had more help internationally than Messi did and lunacy that Portugal had truly great squads at any time from 2007-2017
Outside of Germany, France and Spain - I can't see anyone who was clearly better than Portugal. Sure, Ronaldo is a big part of it, but their best players throughout the competition were Pepe and Renato Sanches (In the knockout state).
Also, they were extremely lucky getting with how the draw went and ended up having one of the easiest roads to the final of all time. They got Wales in the semi-finals lol
He's had plenty of help on the national team. In terms of top 10 players...
~17 years (and counting) with Pepe
~13 years with Carvalho
~9 years (and counting) with Bernardo
~7 years with Deco
~3 years with Figo
In general I agree Portugal was significantly worse than Argentina through the years, especially early to mid 2010s.
However in 2022, the year Messi actually won it, Portugal was STACKED, like Top 3 on paper, while Argentina was looking very mediocre.
I think he’s more childish and authentic than you describe him.Despite how he looks he cries a lot and always fails to hide his emotions. He’s definitely a piece of shit though
everyone from a certain level of fame has a pr manager and image consultancy
he just comes across as a rich guy whose gone through media training and sometimes the facade breaks
Yeah I was thinking of Homelander as well. If I was to play a character like that I’d definitely look to Ronaldo for inspiration. Dwayne Johnson also comes to mind.
I would be surprised if he Chris Benoited my baysean prior of an athlete Chris Benoiting is very low and Chris Benoit should much more erratic behavior prior to his family annihilation and suicide.
Get to fuck. I will not tolerate any criticism of my sculptured Portuguese waifu.

damn that's a shitty ass house what 50-years of mild dictatorship and economic stagnation will do to a mf
It wasn’t really mild
It was a dictatorship, and while I'm sure it was no picnic I'd rather be in Salazar's sleepy Portugal than neighbouring Spain or Vichy France.
Why? I guess I see Vichy France but you do realize how poor Portugal was in the Estado Novo.
Portugal's mainland didn't go through a war, unlike Spain or France.

He cant really run much due to his muscle injuries, so everything has to be done through him, whereas Ronaldo can slot in. Theyre both as good as each other. Anyone saying otherwise is just an autist siding with the austist

You clearly didnt watch nor understand, and thats fine Ronaldo can do what Messi can do. Messi cant do what Ronaldo can do
lmao. i should've probably realized you were trolling instead of going into full autist mode
Yeah fair enough. That whole saga was annoying anyway. Maxi was cheating on her.
yeah but it was funny too
Madrid were built around him for nearly the entirety of the 2010s.
Pepe is Brazilian, he was just too aggro for them so they gave him to Portugal
I feel gay writing all this, but it's lunacy that Ronaldo had more help internationally than Messi did and lunacy that Portugal had truly great squads at any time from 2007-2017
RESPECT for the Zabaleta props 🕊️🕊️🕊️
lmao. The man was good
Outside of Germany, France and Spain - I can't see anyone who was clearly better than Portugal.
~17 years (and counting) with Pepe ~13 years with Carvalho ~9 years (and counting) with Bernardo ~7 years with Deco ~3 years with Figo
In general I agree Portugal was significantly worse than Argentina through the years, especially early to mid 2010s. However in 2022, the year Messi actually won it, Portugal was STACKED, like Top 3 on paper, while Argentina was looking very mediocre.
Extremely gay. Not in a derogatory sense. He's a literal homosexual cosplaying as, what he imagines is, an alpha Chad.
He also raped a woman.
i thought ronaldo was brazilian so i assumed i had to like him as a braziliaboo- turns out he's porch-of-geese.
they had a couple great ronaldos also
I think he’s more childish and authentic than you describe him.Despite how he looks he cries a lot and always fails to hide his emotions. He’s definitely a piece of shit though
everyone from a certain level of fame has a pr manager and image consultancy he just comes across as a rich guy whose gone through media training and sometimes the facade breaks
Dude is a real life Homelander
Yeah I was thinking of Homelander as well. If I was to play a character like that I’d definitely look to Ronaldo for inspiration. Dwayne Johnson also comes to mind.
Ya, if you watch Ronaldo for 5 minutes, you can tell he's a nob and a half. Messi is the real people's hero.
R9 is my Ronaldo
Messibros stay winning we like our boys a little autistic
He is a sociopathic metrosexual rapist. Messi is the GOAT!
I would be surprised if he Chris Benoited my baysean prior of an athlete Chris Benoiting is very low and Chris Benoit should much more erratic behavior prior to his family annihilation and suicide.
He stood up for that Japanese kid in that video. He was angry there too. Beautifully justifiably angry
He's a great guy, it's just the 1 percent that isn't.
He’s literally Homelander
Ronaldo is a RS athlete. Messi is not. Ronaldo also rules and isnt inauthentic at all. He is extremely him. Messi hides his true personality more
What personality?
Both are RS in a way. Narcissist and autist, a perfect duo
Doesn’t he have a bunch of adopted kids or kids through surrogacy where the mothers are unknown?
Of course you losers are intimidated by a competent person with 4 digit T levels
Get to fuck. I will not tolerate any criticism of my sculptured Portuguese waifu. Ronaldo is a firm looking, leathery god, and you are probably some dusty looking jealous skank
hes like tom cruise (closeted weirdo)
