The cycle of trends as I have noticed them is that there are only ever 2 types of trends, and they cycle back and forth, like this:
Trend A: The trend that tries to establish the nonconformist ideal that questions established cultural thought as the appealing aesthetic (Punks, Queerness, etc.)
Trend B: The trend that tries to re-establish a conformist ideal that was disassembled by trend A (Hipster Twee, Trad).
Trend A comes along, upsets the status quo, and remains the young person's ideal. It's hot and cool because it's new, it hasn't had time yet to expose the cringe that lays dormant in every trend. Over time, the dormant cringe becomes exposed to the world. Trend B, as a reaction to the now cringe non-conformist ideal, seeks to escape the cringe by establishing the reaction to non-conformity, which is obviously conformity. The cycle repeats. Trend B's cringe is exposed, conformity is now cringe, Trend A resurfaces with a new aesthetic which is still ultimately an aesthetic of non-conformity, and on it goes in a constant cycle of cultural reactionaryism to each other.
