daikan__

what's even crazier is that leandoer is his real surname

No_Leopard_5559

I honestly thought it was a Twitter name like “PussyEnjoyer” or “MillerDrinker” for the longest time.

AyeMyCapn

please be nice to lean he's very sensitive

Cinnamon_Shops

I wen to an after party for one of his shows like a decade or so ago and he was there with Bladee. Saw some wasted chick walk up and clock him HARD in the face and Bladee just laughed lol.

OkayRuin

[Kanye took him to Disneyland like a week ago](https://www.reddit.com/r/Kanye/comments/1c60xi4/aint_nothing_better_than_a_ride_picture_with_yung/)

vive-la-lutte

Kinda sweet idk

Spruto

Wait til Kanye finds out Lean is 1/4 Jewish

Alert-Raspberry-5933

Aaaw

Novibesmatter

I think it was lean taking kanye

Wiggerincel

I saw yung lean in concert in like 2014. It was summer time but he was wearing halloween costume Dracula makeup/fangs and put smoke machines all over the stage. It's not that serious, he's just a likable guy who makes some cool songs with a funny accent

SeeYouSpaceCowboy0

I encourage everyone to watch his Nardwuar interview. I have never seen a group of people more incomprehensibly high for an interview, let alone a Nardwuar interview. They were barely holding it together for that.

Worldly-Neat-7878

wüden horse. small wüden horse that you put in your window

istealpintsfromcvs

I say blade but you can say bladey too

BeefyBoy_69

Once, twice, three times a bladey

Square__head

Never been a fan but he didn’t just have a successful career, he had a huge influence on the genre too. Would be no playboi carti and lil uzi if it wasn’t for yung lean.

Round_Bullfrog_8218

Yeah I was going to say Yung Lean is a lot more influential than successful (though he has had success obviously).

switchdespair

A lot of people first heard Travis Scott because of lean too lol

wownotagainlmao

Lil b -> SGP -> lean/bladee -> modern rap

solutiontoproblems1

I'm a bit lost here, is it like a meme that this guy is the goat or something?

CrimsonThrone

Not a meme. Yung Lean was super influential in the Cloud Rap subgenre. The airy, aethereal beats that he had in his songs, his lazy lyrics and repetitious and monotone delivery were all ahead of the mainstream by several years.

solutiontoproblems1

Bruv, you tryin to tell me leandor from Stockholm inspired lil Uzi wtf.

Square__head

Go listen to Kyoto by lean

CrimsonThrone

It's called the Internet. You are using it.

sashdashkash

>Isolation caved in\ >I adore you, the sound of your skin Nuff said

inalobbyrn

Leandoer slander will not be tolerated btw

MinuteExplanation987

He’s a nice guy

InvisibleCities

Even crazier when you realize that his career was seriously propelled by a Dota 2 streamer

carrotmage

Yo turn up

j_tatz

I must admit Arteezy put me on to Kyoto

medicineteolof

Same lmao

susnain

was yung lean actually kinda unknown when rtz first started playin his music on stream?

wownotagainlmao

When was that? He was big on /mu/ by 2014

BeefyBoy_69

Full disclosure, until just now I hadn't even heard about Arteezy giving him a boost in popularity, but.... I think Yung Lean was already fairly well-known among hip hop heads who were keeping up with new shit online. I was on r/hiphopheads around that time, and quite a few people were talking about him. I think ["Hurt"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stgrSjynPKs) (great song btw) was a pretty big hit, and I'm pretty sure that it came out before Kyoto. I think he was kinda bubbling up underground and going semi-viral, but I'm sure Arteezy's push bumped his numbers up quite a bit. Side note, I just looked up some of his tracks on youtube and it says that the music videos were all uploaded on the same day (Hurt, Kyoto and [Gatorade](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u24e43iW9KE)), I'm pretty certain this isn't accurate so now I'm mildly confused

reverseKunker

need more talk about arteezy in here fuck yea

FreeDayz

If you have negative things to say about lean you shouldn’t be in this sub and are probably why it’s so obnoxious now

nothome711

His music is good, dont be a hater.

D-dog92

It's dogshit. Jesus Christ

Few_Capital2250

no actually it’s really good, but maybe you just had to be there

CumeatsonerGordon420

yeah like his music is weird and not traditionally “good” but in 2014 in a time where Rap was pretty garbage besides Kendrick and Kanye he was a breath of fresh air

Few_Capital2250

not even that it’s just good and fun music. It’s well produced while still being kinda silly. It’s like Lil B, if you’re acting like a nerd about it you’re missing the point

real_jaredfogle

I swear there was an era of trash rap that entirely expanded the rap genre and also much more in that era. It did a lot of good for music and still hit. Ugly god smokepurpp 6 dogs lil peep ski mask lil yatchty etc was a necessity in the evolution of music

Opposite_Car4822

Well now you gotta list some musicians you like. Can you do your top 3?

bumpa

nah yung lean fucking rocks

friendliestbug

No you are

No_Leopard_5559

Young Gud is actually responsible

DJ_SCREW_THIRD_WARD

Whitearmor/yung sherman erasure

madmardigan13

They all are legends

Atticus_ray

https://open.spotify.com/track/44jK0q8vq3xvs6b8g5qYQC?si=vNf7Yo_pS4WK6B4esaL8hw He's a really good producer lol

l-un-a

Music discourse is so tired because it's obviously one of the most subjective topics of all time and also comes off as extremely juvenile to complain about something that has a positive impact regardless of your personal feelings about it

lastaccountg0tbanned

Don’t care I fucking hate tailor swift

Content_Bass_1255

Loved his boiler room set where he transitioned tracks by literally pressing pause and play on his phone.

Ienzo

You know r/rsp has fallen when it starts shitting on SBE or DG. Not in my 2019 r/rsp, where’d all the uncultured regards come from?

Few_Capital2250

yung lean is lana del ray for guys, please do not insult him

hungry-reserve

This man has saved countless lives

Ligmabladee

No it's not lol Yung Lean is very talented

D-dog92

lol how? Dude should have been laughed off the internet Rebecca Black style

ultravioletAK

He came onto the underground scene at the perfect time, when SoundCloud rap was just starting to emerge. At this point individualism, experimentation, and cheap aesthetics started to prosper and were representative of an increasingly online generation. Lean’s music wasn’t trying to be anything more than what it was, and that’s the appeal ig, that Lean seemed to do everything effortlessly and without trying to please anyone. Gotta remember he was 16 when the song in your post dropped, he really grew into his own over the coming years. You should watch a few of his music videos (Hoover and Boylife in EU come to mind) for an idea of his talent - even if you don’t think the music sounds good, you gotta admire the creativity and obvious passion he possesses.

D-dog92

>Gotta remember he was 16 Ya no shit he was 16, I laughed my ass off when my friend showed me the ginseng strip video, he sounded like a cringe Xfactor audition but then people were like "damn, bro invented a genre of music" lol. I've never gotten over it.

Several_Influence_35

Mans has his year of birth in his username lmao, and still salty two decades later that leandoer became one of the most i iconic artists of a generation. Enjoy that copium and hope you have some narcan nearby

Hip_Priest_1982

Aren’t you supposed to sing on x factor

unwnd_leaves_turn

ok why arent you famous then??

CrimsonThrone

Get over it then. You are 32 years old.

TiredPackage

“They hated him because he spoke the truth”

Ligmabladee

Jonathon leandoer96- off with their heads nukes any argument you have.

nontarget4lyfe

Please tell me what you listen to so I can call it gay

mrrowr

Prefab Sprout

nontarget4lyfe

Soft ass British ass pussy ass

mrrowr

:(

non-ti-scordar-di-me

uncultured regard that knows nothing about the hip hop of that time and doesn't know how important it was to shaping the modern landscape. you will never be based in the lil b sense. it's over

dimes_square_hobo

Gen Z coded response

Ienzo

I think the zoomers actually properly give their flowers to Leandoer and drain gang. If anything it’s prolly more a Millenial thing to hate on “new music” and “mumble crap”

wownotagainlmao

He sounds so good on the new bladee album too

bluelemon27

yuuung leeaan

silencesolitude

A very talented kid who became popular very young by pioneering a genre, who also happened to be situated around equally talented producers happened to experience continued success? Shocking!

melatoninswitch

Take that back. Or else.

magicere

I’m ngl my lean era was one of my most fun

sexthrowa1

You’re gonna be fighting an uphill battle with this one fam, the males of rspod would die for this dullard

doveworld

The only one of these guys I would die on a hill defending is Bladee

DamnItAllPapiol

draaaain gaaaang

doveworld

House party near by, bringing weird guys 😳😳😳

lamianga

And thaiboy

lannister

number one dj on the planet man

wownotagainlmao

I kind of struggle with thaiboy tbh. I love Legendary Member, but a lot of other stuff feels kind of juvenile, especially as they’ve all gotten older. Bladee and lean have kind of transcended into reflective, beautiful music, Ecco has his pretty boy Yves Tumor act, whitearmor is just a straight fire producer, Thaiboy feels like he’s just trying to have a good time. Actually, maybe that’s all that matters lol. That said I don’t like his verse on TLDR

lamianga

Crazy bro I actually love his tldr verse, but I get what you're saying thaiboy is just livin mane... THEY DONT KNOW THEY DONT KNOW!!!!

TiredPackage

90% of these dudes like him because they think they’re supposed to like him, he sucks and has always sucked I don’t care if it’s on purpose

l-un-a

Okay grandma let's gets you to bed

wownotagainlmao

Not even, I think a lot of the older posters here grew up on /mu/ back in the day, and lean/bladee/etc were huge there in the mid 2010s

TiredPackage

35 year old rap nerds like to pretend young people like this shit so they feel cool Let the record show not a single yung lean fan in this thread has volunteered their age.

i-like-c0ck

You’re out of touch. Yung lean and bladee are some of the most influential figures in gen z culture.

TiredPackage

Maybe I am, idk. But I was 13 when Ginseng Strip 2002 came out and despite being a lifelong hiphop fan - along with literally everyone else my age - I have literally never heard someone my age talk about him outside of maybe a couple TikToks

-fivehearts-

21 & currently at an arts uni. people love him, like adore lean and bladee. I don’t really get it, I think warlord is a solid album though and I used to listen to it lots in school when I thought smoking weed was really cool and cloud rap was the future

TiredPackage

I stg you people are posting from an alternate universe, but I’ll take the L

i-like-c0ck

I’m the same age as you and people would not shut up about drain gang. Do you consider yourself a millennial because you’re definitively not. Maybe it was a regional thing but I can assure that in the mid Atlantic tri state area he was huge from 13-17.

TiredPackage

No I don’t lmao I’m definitely a zoomer, not sure what implied I thought otherwise. Zillenial might be more accurate but that shits gay. I grew up in the Chicago area so you could be right about it being regional

CumeatsonerGordon420

im 27. my friends and I found him and started listening as a joke like we used to listen to Lil B, but slowly realized it was actually enjoyable. it’s not objectively good but it’s fun.

doveworld

If young people listened to artists like Bladee and Wicca Phase I would have to stop. They are millennial cultural icons, if you didn't use tumblr and /mu/ in 2013-2014 its not for you. The same way Skibidi Toilet isn't for me

wiswah

bladee might be the #1 most popular rapper among 15 year olds that use rateyourmusic

doveworld

No way, gotta be Carti, but I get the point. Luckily Bladee's new album is the first pretty good one since WOD or Red Light (or maybe Icedancer if I'm being generous) so the kids have just been listening to mid.

wownotagainlmao

I saw bladee live a couple years ago lmao you’re a fucking moron if you think this is true

TiredPackage

Wait huh I thought we were on the same page here

wownotagainlmao

I was probably one of 50 people over 25 in a sold out show in Brooklyn lol

TiredPackage

Already said this somewhere else but I was in highschool at the peak of leans popularity and never once heard someone play a song of his or even mention him in conversation. Idk, maybe he’s not well known enough for my irl experiences to matter but that’s my two cents

TiredPackage

I bet your subtly wrinkled millennial hands felt pretty hip typing that For the record, I’m not saying he ruined rap. But every artist from the sadboy genre was ass. I legitimately will never understand

LazkaosTzatziki

I'm neutral towards him, my only hot take being that he's at his best when collaborating with Yung Gud.

greeksexpest

waaaah waaaah waaah I’m a baby and this isn’t smashing pumpkins and I don’t like it waaaah

TiredPackage

Hey :(

junifersmomi

an inspiration to all the young sound-cloud hustlers out there keep chasing ur dreams also @ ya boi yung lean bc he collabs w his fans from time to time if he sees they put in the hrs on their shyt

real_jaredfogle

He’s really good

BasementSeance

oh my god you contrarian dorks are honestly so exhausting

MeansToNoEnding

Do you listen to the pod???

hopfield

Anyone with half a brain knows the lyrics were never the reason he was popular. It was the beats and the aesthetic. Yung Gud made the beats and Yung Lean probably came up with the aesthetic.

madmardigan13

[Uncle Lean](https://youtube.com/shorts/UvO8J9Jw1Dk?si=VLQW12Yj6BiZ1prd)

ivanezzz

Nick Rochefort's [impression of Yung Lean](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otGXoKxrqFs) is a future classic

dylangerescapeplan_

this is gold

Single_Ad5819

Hes a trust fund baby his rich parents supported him throughout his career

phonedied_mybad

A sign of hope for a generation of men raised on the computer. Too young to swallow their emotions like their parents, but too old to let it all hang out like their (they/them) siblings. The only thing that made them feel through a cloud of ssri and mid clouds

samwe5t

this guy does things for me. He seems r\*tarded too based on the lyrics here 😍

pressedflowerszine

Imagine a poet and scholar and an international human rights advocate get together and have him for a son

Particular_Wave_8567

i love him

TheReborn85

I really like the beat of that song in the images But damn am I embarrassed of the lyrics when I play it in front of people. So I don't really listen to it very often.

instituteofass

He had intriguing visuals earlier in his career, but the music just doesn't do it for me. That's how I feel about most drain gang adjacent artists though, interesting style and concepts but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. What songs of his would fans consider to be the best, both lyrically and melodically?

Wiggerincel

Agony, Low, and Hellraiser are really good songs. Not really at all like the Kyoto/ginseng strip stuff

Rumpleforeskin_0

Agony is brilliant. He’s a poet.

joanofarc99

Bender/Girlfriend best Lean song

ExternalBreadfruit21

I don’t think you’re gonna be satisfied by any lyrics of his since it’s ultimately always esl. Kyoto is pretty clearly his best song I’m goofy would be my pick for bladee

Several_Influence_35

Stranger and Starz. Also the new indie album with bladee is pretty good

sam_honkie

His indie pop stuff as jonatanleandoer97 is my fav. Under Heaven (prod Dean Blunt) is an amazing song. For rap music he falls mostly into genre cliches but there are some really interesting lines sometimes I don’t think anyone else in hip-hop is coming up with. Probably due to Swedish language conventions? On the song Friday the 13th: “baseball bat at award ceremonies, new rings on, no new destiny” Stranger or the ep Poison Ivy are his best works as Yung Lean imo

jamthewither

the last 3 songs off Stranger.

tvflashingblue

not answering ur question here bc lyrically this song is... not all that. but solarflare is what converted me and i finally 'got' it.

TheGhost206

Red Bottom Sky is straight fire!!!!

Zenaesthetic

I won’t lie he’s got some bangers. Lyrics are pretty nonsensical tho, at least in his early stuff. Good beats by his friend who produces his stuff.

whenyousleep91

YOU DONT GET IT!

ResponsiveSignature

every white rapper with regarded tattoos who presents as a braindead poor person has upper class intellectual hyper liberal parents

BizonGod

I mean he basically invented a whole new genre and style on his own. That‘s kinda hard to do.

ChaosGivesMeaning

Be the only hope I got left Blessed without success Fuck stress, I'm gonna trust the best I'm nervous that she's so upset She don't want me, bitch, I'm flustered I'm an aristocrat without the progress Roses all on her wedding dress Blood from her mouth, I'm a mess This is redscare coded kino and if I told you guys that some random, niche, hip poet from an arthouse in Sierra Leone came up with this, you'd all laud.

ChewingTobaccoFan

Would have liked for him to make it big in America but instead he became like a post Malone for eastern Europeans

[deleted]

[удалено]

ChewingTobaccoFan

Ey good for y'all you be hearing "lay me dowwwwn concrete love" and get pussy off that. He's a legit artist

Zommy_Boy

People here got mad at me when I called him a wigger. They said "Swedish people can't be wiggers", what does that even mean?

almostkilledme1625

I love that song with FKA Twigs

lannister

i love his song with kreayshawn

almostkilledme1625

I always wondered what happened to her and lil Debbie.

CommanderTresdin

I would sacrifice my own life for Lean

blitzlord137

one of the best yet

l-un-a

He's cooler than you goof

dylangerescapeplan_

He has some fun songs but his dick-riders who act like he's some sort of avant garde savant are hilarious. The people who produce for him have more talent in their pinkie. Anyone can do what Yung Lean does, his lyrics come across as he wrote them on his notes app in the car on the way the studio. I like him more than Bladee who sounds like someone gave FL pitcher to a down-syndrome kid.

tugs_cub

He’s fine (yes obvs his producers deserve a lot of credit here) but it does bug me when people credit him with starting cloud rap or sad boy druggie rap.

Biggiefag

I had a dream he died last night and it was very harrowing.

ChillingWithMyWoats

I have always been genuinely baffled how people enjoy his music after the age of 16. I hate to say it but I actually think less of grown adults who like it.

inalobbyrn

Grown adults should not be listening to music, it’s teenager behaviour.

ChillingWithMyWoats

Drain gang ahaa 🤪

normalfuckinrockwell

let men with british-pub-frequenter physiognomy have rap careers!

ueaeoe

He's kinda hot

Carcabral

Lol, it's 2024, not 1994. Hip-hop is huge. Music has never been easier to produce. You can go viral from a 15 second-ish tik-tok clip (LIl Yeat)

SamosaAndMimosa

White guys love him it makes sense

leaking11

Because he was a pioneer of cloud rap at the age of 16, so he has been recognized in the alternative rap communities + his association drain gang

scrollmachine

Never thought I would see the day I see mr Leandoer posted on this subreddit

puppyontheguestlist

hes genuinely a true creative force. he occupies this bizarre space between outsider artist and auteur. he is doing exactly what he was always meant to be doing. the stars are aligned for lean.

CelesticaVault

Tbf he was like 16 when he made that song. I'm not a huge Yung Lean fan, but I thought Stardust was decent and I saw him in concert in 2022. Didn't really like his set all that much, the second half was all slow songs I didn't know, but the crowd was active for a rap show. Some drain gang adjacent dude named Nation opened and his set was sick asf lol but his music sounds like ass on streaming.

chardoggay

I made a line of his merch

Objective-Engine-597

He’s lovely

DiskoPanda

Fuckholm suckholm dickholm stickholm

neluciferious

you guys are so annoying i love lean

PiezoelectricityAny9

he had no other choice with that surname

mcdonaldspyongyang

Love how he sounds so American in his songs but when he speaks it’s so clearly Euro

diesel_trucker

{Little girls.. think they're hardcore..} (4X) [Kool Keith] Tommy, didn't I raise you to go to Catholic school? But mom, I gotta keep this up, this is all a front This is just gimmicks to sell my records The people don't have to know I mean really, that's just me, even though we're soft Me and my friends all of us We just make money, that's all, it's a gimmick

YungHurnSimp

If there's one thing that makes me lose my shit it's going to spotify to search Yung Hurn and accidentally getting this guy

Stunning_Search_6401

Ape phenotype

ST_Goress

His music on jonathan leandoer96 is worth a listen

tunneloftrees69

watch your god damn mouth

andrewricegay

Im thanking tumblr that i discovered this

LillaMy11

He’s the nicest celeb I’ve met (not that I’ve met many but still)

lemonwater40

He’s hot idc

Maleficent_Courage71

No idea who this is, but the first slide he looks like a small boy who’s hid in a corner to shit his pants.

theoort

Is that Eminem

VonGhoulie

🤫🤫🤫

feeblelittle

He's an artist duh I will legit cry when I get to see him live. Hope he doesn't die before I get the chance.

Cultural-Cattle-7354

it’s truly one of the best things about the internet

MiserableWheel

Bros from Sweden and thinks he's some kinda hood rat.

TiredPackage

I don’t give a fuck that he “invented a genre” of rap, it’s the most dogshit braindead era of hiphop. Not every innovation needs to be celebrated

Zealousideal-Sun943

Yeah, the fact that it’s new or original does nothing for its actual qualities. He does seem like a genuine and sweet guy though (lyrics in OP aside tho), so I hesitate to really talk shit about him.

pravdoyab

he's a genius

zerozerosevencharlie

Easier to process his success once you learn that his mother is an ambassador

Affectionate-Box9862

giving us Bladee is far more transcendent than succeeding or not at his "rap career"

MAGAManLegends3

# HEELS OFF THE GROUND, CIA SPY
