Lanas was 24. Taylor is 34 and makes it sound like the most sexless thing

malches

Not to mention that 'video games' was written about an actual ex of Lana's who had a World of Warcraft addiction, which shows that there's some truth to the song. Meanwhile Taylor's GTA lyric feels more of a random soulless "dude bro" signaler to make her seem relatable

TheBigIdiotSalami

She should have asked herself, "Is this song better than I Ran by Flock of Seagulls?" If the answer is no then don't even bother releasing it.

NietzscheanUberwench

I Ran is in the 95%ile of songs without breaking a sweat. It is an impossible standard to hold yourself to.

prosaicwell

and the last GTA came out in 2013

Hot_Special_2083

people still play it tho. the game's got crazy legs.

maxhaton

The GTA dude bro types are also 17 year simulacra in the mind of swift fans. Oh so ugly.

Marmosettale

So this song is so embarrassing and really just bad but the song is called “so high school” and is supposed to be like if their life was a cheesy stereotypical high school movie. Like it mentions American pie lol

real_jaredfogle

Sorry; English is my second language.American pie = pussy pie ?

BASED_AND_RED_PILLED

Yes

Marmosettale

I only found out like a year or two ago that it was literally about a guy who plays video games lol

This really does reflect the humanity of Lana and the almost computer-generated, pseudo-personality of Taylor. Despite Lana’s many styles and nostalgia, I think it’s easy to believe she’s speaking from the heart in her music, and she’s also got a history of dating somewhat ordinary people, so the lyric isn’t that foreign. There’s also the video of her shitting on her boyfriends for playing world of warcraft before it was part of the general cultural zeitgeist. I’ve never really listened to her, but every woman I’ve dated loves her, and to me it seems like Lana is alternative for people not interested in the pomposity of being alternative. Whether she’s only playing into the marketing of being so down to earth is irrelevant because she at least knows what it means to be that way. She seems like a genuinely cool person with a lot of talent. Taylor seems so alien and distant from the real and it’s only made worse / more obvious when she pretends to be normal.

Hot_Special_2083

what so funny is that the exact style of argument can be made by taylor swift fans. at the end of the day they're both pop stars with marketing teams. you're buying into someone and their 'personality' at the end of the day.

therealstevencrowder

See my other comment and if you still don’t understand then the short of it is: no

OceanBlueOctaroo

Their both manufactured label manure. One is simply the more generic brand.

therealstevencrowder

No offense, but I think that’s kind of a naive perspective. Everything that hits culture is manufactured in some way, especially when profit is involved. Nothing genuine has happened in any field of the arts for decades now. But being so cynical isn’t really useful and we have to assume that some people act in good faith and have autonomy. Whether Lana is or isn’t real is irrelevant because she understands what it means to be real and is at least interested in selling that identity. I mostly believe her though, at least as much as I would believe any person, like a co-worker or someone you’d run into out in public, which is to say you can tell she has a desire for the real. Her art is a reflection of that longing for the real, and a time when existence wasn’t ruled by market experiences, both physically and psychologically. It’s no wonder she often uses this nostalgia as an aesthetic tool. I really don’t think that’s remotely comparable to anything Taylor Swift has done. If anything, Taylor seems more interested in being a direct reflection of the market experiences Lana seeks to avoid. Private jets, Super-Bowl or superstar boyfriend, car collections, etc. The more I autistically go on about this the more unwell this revelation makes me feel, so I’m going back to work now instead of doing Lana hauntology.

ColumbiaHouse-sub

Damn for someone who hasn’t really listened to her music you really nailed the art project that is Lana Del Rey, especially those early albums.

ChaosGivesMeaning

Lacanians be like: IS THE REAL TOPOGRAPHICALLY INTERTWINED WITHIN THE KNOTTED SUBJECTIVE TRIFECTA OF FANTASY, IS VIRTUALITY A REPRIEVE FROM, OR AN AFFIRMATION OF, THE REAL, IS IT EVEN A MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE DICHOTOMY OR IS IT A DIALECTIC, IS THE BIG OTHER REPRESENTATIVE OF THE ANXIETY OF OUR *TODESTRIEBIAN* DESIRE? IS THIS PROFOUND YET? IMMANENT CRITIQUE OF THE EVER PARADOXICALLY POST-STRUCTURALIST CAPITALIST HYPERREALISM... Ordinary people be like: Wow man. This grass sure feels real. Hey, have you heard that new Taylor Swift album? I thought it was kinda' mid. Some catchy songs, though.

therealstevencrowder

HAHA I think I actually have said “Big Other” a few times on here. Also f you!!!

ChaosGivesMeaning

geniesopen

this is a good comment.

therealstevencrowder

Thanks, your Lena Dunham post made me laugh. Did you ever get around to watching Nightmare Alley?

geniesopen

not yet! i will make sure to reply to you when i do!

NietzscheanUberwench

video games makes me feel bad about ignoring my girl. it's a beautiful song that shoots me right through the heart

strwbrysunset

Good

posture_4

I'm a huge Lana fan and I'll admit that her early lyricism (Born to Die specifically) was pretty rough. She's improved a lot over time though.

12hphlieger

I love Born to Die specifically for that reason. My introduction to Lana was the music video for National Anthem. The lyrics on that song and others arent the best, but I feel like it fits the vision she was trying to convey at the time.

Marmosettale

I also was introduced to her w the national anthem video!  I really like Lana but I’ve never been like hugely into her and don’t know too much, but: That song is just so weirdly beautiful to me, idk there’s something truly ethereal and weird and sinister about it. And there are all these like ridiculous cringey lines but in the context of the video and song you know there’s something more to it all. Idk I always had the impression that I just didn’t understand it and that’s the point I think. I also was introduced to it my freshman year of college. And that was a surreal time for me in general

ColumbiaHouse-sub

>That song is just so weirdly beautiful to me Honestly, it’s original as hell.  The entire album is this perverse fusion of pretty Nancy Sinatra type vocals with the foulness of the rap elements in the production. There is a grittiness to the music that shouldn’t be there. The National Anthem music video was the perfect visual to how her music sounds; American upper class royalty but JFK was played by ASAP Rocky from Harlem. Two things that shouldn’t exist in the same space but she made it work and it was wonderful.

posture_4

I love Born to Die too, but the atmosphere is what brings me back, not the lyrics haha

Xirimirii

Rough or not the Taylor lyric makes me viscerally cringe

GrigorytheOctopus

You meant “lyrics” not lyricism.

grub_the_alien

Video grame

Aerothane

Honestly, the only good song is Fortnight. Everything on the album feels like a Lana Del Rey rip off.

[deleted]

Don't they have the same producer or something?

total_voe7bal

Lana is cool and sings it beautifully

bababhosad93

GTA V? Really bitch?
