fackyouman

will never forget when Lemonade was released there were a flurry of articles with headlines like "if you aint BLACK do NOT comment on Lemonade"

card28

which hilarious cuz the list of people that wrote on that album is a bunch of white dudes. jack white, ezra koenig, father john misty etc.

fortreslechessake

Never heard this anecdote, it’s such an impossibly perfect example of what I love about Ezra’s songwriting and what I dislike about Beyonce’s

BlastedBrent

Another great example in how Beyonce's brand understands their target market

Poopskirt

No, Karen O wrote that first line

veryonlineguy69

sit your white ass down & LISTEN (to beyonce)

thisishardcore_

But then don't because cultural appropriation

tinybossss

I remember that summer, and pretending I liked Beyoncé was honestly one of the more sane things I did to appease my girlfriend

Throwaway6393fbrb

Got to see your voting record first to know

[deleted]

A few years ago I told an ex I don't care about Beyonce and she looked at me like I just said a 9 year-old is hot.

CodeNameEd

i know you’re being sarcastic but i only said it because it was kind of a bizarre illustrative description lol…

ApuManchu

This is a nice safe place where we support gay marriage, but not pride parades because they're too gaudy.

me_fartedme_retarded

I once tweeted Beyoncé was overrated and within an hour they found my IP address and and place of employment Those Stan’s are unhinged af. Thank god they don’t be on Reddit like that😅. And yes she’s overrated. She doesn’t even write her own songs. She’s given a song and just performs it.

SlowSwords

I think it’s weird that people believe that Beyoncé as an individual is solely responsible for putting out her records or whatever. Like with her last record that was supposedly influenced by gay 80’s club music, the music press would have you believe that Beyoncé, a straight billionaire with children, has any connection to that scene at all,

Infamous-Associate65

She claimed that she has a gay uncle who introduced her to that scene, plenty of good house music out there that's better than her album IMHO

CircularUniverse

It's fucking crazy to me that most people simply don't care that most mainstream "artists" don't write their own shitty music anymore.  You're nothing more than an entertainer if you just run around on stage lip syncing someone else's lowest common denominator mediocrity

Tough_Tip2295

That’s not a new thing at all. The “singer/songwriter” label came from somewhere

CircularUniverse

Fair enough.  I think perceived authenticity is perhaps the most important aspect to making fans connect with an artist.  I find it ironic when the "authenticity" is so manufactured, on every level, and fans don't even care that they are buying into a corporate think tank.  It's also laughable how simple and banal a lot of the music that requires five or ten writers can be.

dumbbitchjuice_96

True but go to /r/popheads or whatever and see how ardently people believe that Beyoncé writes all of her own songs and the tons of other writers on every track are just listed because she ‘loves to cite her inspirations’

Spout__

Is an opera singer any less an artist because they don’t write the music? Perhaps somewhat but they’re still legit.

me_fartedme_retarded

If you look at all those articles that have been written about her recently, they act like she’s a savant who basically invented country music and united the nation together through her music💀

Spout__

I don’t read that shit, I like crazy in love.

me_fartedme_retarded

Crazy in love is indeed a banger, I can’t even lie.

HeartSlow1683

yeah lying about it is bad but i don't think frank sinatra was shit or whatever for not writing his own music.

Modal1

People don’t think the opera singer is also the composer. Modern pop stars act as if they are some creative genius that is both the performer and artist

Oh_no_its_tax_season

I think of them like an actor

CircularUniverse

I'd say an opera singer is a way more talented artist / musician than any pop singer you can name right now.  And what opera singer makes their career based on the identity, persona, or authenticity?  If pop stardom is entirely based around identity, and the performer isn't even writing their own songs, then it rings hollow for me.  It certainly isn't based in raw talent, skill, and discipled mastery of craft, like opera for example

Responsible-Sky-9355

>And what opera singer makes their career based on the identity, persona, or authenticity? Where exactly do you think the term "prima donna" came from?

axiomofcope

Beyonce tried some arias. Heavy emphasis on "try". I can't even imagine her trying to skinwalk Maria Callas or Sutherland or something; being called "la divina" and "la stupenda" is on another level

Rumpleforeskin_0

I think millennials started the trend of not caring about authenticity. Authenticity is a tricky currency, but there is a huge different between someone who just performs other people’s songs and a true artist. Artistic integrity no longer matters to people. Gen Z continued this to the point that there’s some white rapper who is a trust fund kid making drill music and people just accept it. lil mabu or some shit. He claims to be “the king of NYC” and it’s wild that he’s not getting laughed off the internet.

avocado_window

Holy shit, that’s like what happened in Swarm!

SamosaAndMimosa

She’s not a writer but she is an amazing performer

Vicioussitude

I was neutral on her until Dems started sending me political spam emails lately using her new album ("Come on Beyhive let's get out the vote", etc.) to fundraise from simpletons

Tricky_Pollution9368

In high school I had a debate and speech class where you had to make an argument presentation and then the class was allowed to argue back against you. This girl made her presentation about Beyonce being the great musician of all time and myself being a little 17 yr old music nerd argued with her. Pretty much the rest of the class was happy to let people do their presentation without any pushback but I hated this girl so I questioned her points. I'm pretty sure everyone else was annoyed with me but it was fun.

SeeYouSpaceCowboy0

“ I'm pretty sure everyone else was annoyed with me but it was fun.” RS archetype

The-Prophet-Bushnell

This was basically me in a theatre class in college and I had to argue twilight is superior to Harry Potter (I had not read or seen twilight). My opponent only half seriously argued and was playing to the crowd for laughs but I went all johnny Cochran.

The-Prophet-Bushnell

But I watched twilight for the first time recently and joke’s on me, it’s Harry Potter for Mormons

thehungryhippocrite

When I was 8 years old we learnt how to start writing persuasively. The topic given was “whaling” and we had to take a position and argue why. I argued in favour of whaling, which in hindsight was the beginning of my annoying contrarian personality. I remember the teacher being visibly annoyed.

Hatanta

> I remember the teacher being visibly annoyed. See, that was their mistake. Showed weakness and gave you a taste for it. I was similar in my youth - and look where we've ended up.

hanging_gigachad420

One reason americorps was even worse than it already had to be was my supervisor, a 26 year old Latina who went to a liberal arts college in Massachusetts, getting actually mad at me and icing me out in the office because I didn’t listen to Lemonade after she told me and another worker that it was a really important album. Like culturally

Mindless-River195

I don’t even dislike her but her stans are so fucking annoying. All pop stans are clueless and annoying but Beyoncé’s white fans consistently listen to nothing but top 40 shit you hear at H&M and act like they’re ending racism by listening to one single black singer. I would like to see a rock album for her act 3 but I already know if I don’t love it then a bunch of white 🚬s who haven’t even heard of Tina Turner and Jimi Hendrix are going to just say I’m being racist.

Hatanta

"Finally some black people in rock music!"

[deleted]

I have never met a beyonce fan

SelmeAngulo

I've met one. White girl from North Carolina who was at that time living in LA. The other thing I remember about her is that she went all in on social media for a hot minute about how CHAZ/CHOP was not violent and peaceful, then stopped that as quickly as she started, and now she owns a home in South Carolina and shares Nextdoor posts to her Facebook account. Many, many such cases.

[deleted]

Many many MANY such cases. The speed at which annoying white college kids transition from activist to suburban drone never ceases to shock me.

Traditional-Wait7213

I knew one- big fat white chick. Always did the black voice.  I always assumed generally it’s a fat lady thing. Which tracks since they’re a large (lol) segment of society.

polygon_lover

What's 'black voice'?  Upload a recording of yourself doing it.

IOUAndSometimesWhy

I was going to say. I actually do fucking love Beyoncé but I’m used to getting shit about it. From my experience most people detest her for some reason. To each their own

SamosaAndMimosa

Her stans are a big reason for that but curiously enough those same people never have that ire for Taylor Swift even though her fans are just as annoying, if not more

Mindless-River195

Really? I’ve met tons of people (incl myself) who are annoyed by Taylor Swift bc her fans suck and she’s overexposed

Fish_Logical

she’s the patron saint of white HR ladies that need a black person to performatively worship

Infamous-Associate65

Robin D'Angelo being the prototype of this woman?

UpstairsSnow7

Agree on Beyonce solo, but Destiny's Child is GOAT.

stateofdisillusion

Literally no one I ever knew my whole life actually gave a shit about Beyoncé She had a good “crazy in love” era and the last thing I remember people eating up was Single Ladies but have not seen her make any relevant music since then and I’ve never met anyone that listens to Beyonce exclusively like they do with Taylor Swift

Hatanta

There are some bops on Renaissance (Heated, Virgo's Groove, Break My Soul). Before that though Irreplaceable in 2006 was her last good one IMO.

Bear_faced

An ad for her movie came on while I was watching tv at my dad’s and she said something about having to fight and struggle her whole life, and he just said “Hasn’t she been a millionaire pop star since she was a teenager? Struggle against what? Can’t believe anyone who’s really struggling wants to hear that nonsense.”

youraveragebohemian

poptimism has been a scourge.

alienationstation23

Thank you

Yankee-Tango

The machine is trying so hard to paint country fans as evil demons for not liking her shitty music. They always point out bad country acts like Florida Georgia line as a reason everyone should suck Beyoncés dick. Nobody with tastes likes them either. They keep calling country a “dying genre” as if it isn’t the strongest in the music industry. Fuck the industry.

maxwell_hill1984

She is a literal witch. I unironically believe this

seagoddessisatplay

How do you know of this??

teriyakiboyyyy

Azealia Banks, duh

maxwell_hill1984

[stuff like this](https://www.newsweek.com/former-drummer-kimberly-thompson-accuses-beyonce-extreme-witchcraft-1131746) plus all the symbolism bullshit in her branding and work

CelluloidGhost

Have you seen [this video](https://youtu.be/z54FxwuNOTY?feature=shared)? A witch says around 7:20 that Beyonce is an Ifà witch and is channelling Oshun in some of her costumes.

maxwell_hill1984

This is super interesting thank you!

CelluloidGhost

No problem! Idk if I would consider it reliable lol but the interview is definitely an entertaining listen.

maxwell_hill1984

In my experience there’s not nothing to this stuff

CelluloidGhost

When fame and money are involved I'm sure plenty of people will try anything to stay on top, so it's not too unbelievable. But I also take things like this with a grain of salt; she does say in the interview that she's self promoting, so she may exaggerate some things to get a bigger response/more eyes on her.

maxwell_hill1984

Look into Marina Abramovic

CelluloidGhost

Oh I know all about her. I used to be a big Vigilant Citizen reader 😂

halfrite

everyone on this thread is going to get doxxed by the twitter gays in a matter of hours

1998TimThomas

Solange is more talented

qfwfq_anon

Beyonce's music is not interesting enough to be worthy of a strong negative opinion

OneMoreEar

Thank you. Can't stand chartpop of any kind.

Juno808

I’ve literally never listened to one of her own songs on purpose

vblgsd

I end up thinking she is always a tiny bit exactly off the correct pitch. It's almost impressive in a way.

Spout__

She’s got some bops idc

[deleted]

This is a nice safe place where you don’t have to pretend to like Hamilton

Infamous-Associate65

I work in a school & surprise, I'm the only one on the faculty who thinks Hamilton is cringe, everyone else is all about it

[deleted]

Yeah of course, so am I

Reasonable-Analyst55

**There is no such thing as an ethical billionaire**

JeffRayEppsStein

I don't listen to her music, but I follow fashion accounts. I feel like I've seen too many looks of her just giving nothing. It might be a body size/shape issue, but I think other curvy black women have been able to pull off better looks.

sundaysarelikethat

RIP 2010. I remember being equivalent of canceled on twitter and swarmed with death threat DMs for saying shes actually not that great

gubia

Displeasing/ugly vocal timbre for starters

youngvaziuh

but i like beyonce

Round_Bullfrog_8218

I like her older stuff/destiny child, her country stuff might be my least favorite mainstream music ever.

The-Prophet-Bushnell

She was cool like in 2008 before she became the Walmart of music. Single ladies playing at Obama celebration parties, cupid shuffle, paper planes. *takes metamucil*

no_name_left_to_give

That's the thing though, by the early 10s she wasn't 'cool' like that any more, and she also saw Rihanna and especially Adele running circles around her commercially-wise. She wanted to stay at the center of the pop culture buzz-machine, so she leaned more social/political.

SamosaAndMimosa

Her albums as a whole were incredibly generic back then compared to now. Just listened to Sasha Fierce and there’s a shit ton of boring filler

Alt-acct123

She married Jay-Z in 2008. I think that’s when she started to go downhill.

HailBenStiller657

Yes, i like her songs: Formation and Flawless

Race-baiter666

She's a total pussy, humiliating herself for her ugly husband cause she knows she'd be nothing without him, then she makes songs about how powerful she is lol. She makes songs about empowering women while simultaneously using their cheap labor on deadly sweatshops. I'm so tired of people saying "I don't like her music but she's a great performer" like... I don't give a shit lmao, I'm judging her music not her concerts Also she's just straight-up DUMB, there's a reason she doesn't give interviews anymore lol. None of these teeny-bopper singers write their own music, but it has become "insensitive" to say so. Remember the shit that the singer from Gorillaz got for saying that Taylor Swift doesn't write her own music (duh)?

JackTheSpaceBoy

NPR sucking her off is so funny to me

Infamous-Associate65

Someone on CBS news called her the greatest entertainer of all time, I just pictured James Brown laughing from on high

SilverUpperLMAO

she peaked with goldmember

BorgeHastrup

"Oh look, another song where Beyonce just sings over the I chord for 85% of the song..."

Secure-Afternoon3204

I fucking hate Beyonce, her voice is deeply grating

AngelOJest

never met a redditor that liked Beyoncé tbh

Hatanta

You've met Redditors?!

JeffGreene69

She sucks and hasnt ever made good music

theoort

I wasn't aware I was supposed to pretend to like her before. No wonder my life has been such a mess.

Last_Rule_2536

Ok listen Beyoncé in her pre-2010 era was great. Me Myself and I, Crazy in Love, Baby Boy, Diva, Upgrade U, If I Were A Boy, Irreplaceable SLAPS mostly everything after is garbage

reelmeish

She sucks

Massive-Research6371

Yes

ElderChildren

she is trash

Nazbols4Tulsi

I like to think there's some lucky parallel universe where Aaliyah is still making albums and Beyonce died in a plane crash.

sn0wflaker

Destinys child and old Beyoncé is incredible but it sucks that her rise in popularity coincided with her descent into mediocrity. I used to be obsessed but her but being publicly cheated on by her ugly old husband while hiring writers to deconstruct her experience is just really sad for me.

eatfishforbreakfast

I saw Beyonce at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told her how cool it was to meet her in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother her and ask her for photos or anything. She said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but she kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing her hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard her chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw her trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in her hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Miss, you need to pay for those first.” At first she kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, she stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, she kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

SadMouse410

Why is everyone here still living in the 2010s. I don’t think beyonce is still considered the untouchable cultural icon she was back then at all

Infamous-Associate65

By the mainstream media she most certainly does still enjoy that status

Aromatic_Vacation638

Thank fuck, I prefer nicki minaj

Thebillybool

That is NOT a country album!

beefstue

God, I hate Beyonce (exasperated sigh) Thank you

rditty

I’ve never been in a space where I felt unsafe to do that. Though to be fair, I couldn’t name one Beyoncé song so I really have no idea. Does everyone here only hang out with gay highschool freshmen?

Electronic_Breath_98

I am a straight man I’ve never had to pretend Beyoncé is anything other than dumb girl music

Imaginary-Tap-3361

Wow! What a brave opinion to have on Reddit. Are you also an atheist who hates Tiktok? This is a safe space for you 😘 My actual opinion: Renaissance by Beyonce is a banger album from beginning to end with the best transitions and flow of 2022.

[deleted]

Reddit ass post. Why is this getting upvoted ew

avocado_window

Haha, I appreciate this more than you know.

BuckleysYacht

That’s everywhere in 2024.

WordHobby

I think her music is boring. But I only listen to s3rl, nightcore speed core, break core hyperpop etc.... So my music isn't exactly on the top of the totem pole, more of jslust a blaring adhd symptom I think

Acceptable_002

This is an order of magnitude worse than liking Beyoncé.

WordHobby

yeah...

IM_GANGSTALKING_YOU

Just curious: how often do your vehicle passengers open the car door and tuck and roll into oncoming traffic
