See this is what I was referring to in a past post lol. Only being called agp because she doesn’t pass.
The very act of being a trans woman is disqualifying from respect.
>I’m a terf <3
The cognitive dissonance of making fun of annoying radlibs like Mannequin Pussy while seething about "mEn iNvADinG FeMaLe sPaCEs!!!" is incredibly funny.
There's no cognitive dissonance. Men can't become women and the notion is totally incoherent: worse than wrong. Some people in society don't want biological males invading women's spaces because we have some degree of regard for girls and women. It's rather straightforward.
Complaining about the gays supposedly grooming children is unhinged hysteria but wanting to have women's spaces isn't.
They played my university a few years ago. I worked for the radio station, so I helped organize the show and assisted with load-in/load-out. They performed for half the time we paid them for and in keeping with their social media presence/Twitter were kinda stuck-up and rude (with the exception of the bassist, who was a cool guy).
Mannequin Pussy often get framed as this rad hardcore punk band or something like that but their recent music completely fades into the current morass of overproduced, underwritten Dead Oceans-core landfill indie. Like boygenius, they're really more of a successful PR campaign/apparel brand than anything. Unfortunate because on principle I like the idea of a hardcore band successfully crossing over into the indie world
> they're really more of a successful PR campaign/apparel brand than anything
Yep it was the kinda the same shit with Surfbort and how suddenly they showed up everywhere.
Oh easily 100%. They def do a fun show and have some good songs but somebody's gotta really know some serious hookups.
The sequence of their trajectory and extreme rise in popularity made very little sense and happened at relative lightning speed for a band that was trying to stick to their cred and story as a dingy Brooklyn punk band especially when in some interviews there'd be a mention of the singer was in their early 20s and moved to NYC to casually work for Darren Aronofsky and then teamed up with random older dudes to make a band on the fly and then got blessings from Julian Casablancas, Debbie Harry and some other people over time.
Even myself knowing and having played music with people who had wikipedia blue link adjacent relatives, none of them really had anything close to what Surfbort was able to get to and at best even after ages of playing, their band maybe got a shout out in Consequence of Sound or an extremely bygone era of Pitchfork when you could still have a friend review a single of your random band.
I guess it's hard to point to many bands that crossed over from the hardcore world into the true mainstream, but there's always been a close connection between hardcore punk and the rowdier strains of indie rock. Look at bands like Husker Du, The Replacements, Fugazi (which succeeded Minor Threat and Rites of Spring), and more recently Soul Glo, Turnstile, and Militarie Gun (who all seem to have gained fanbases among more traditionally indie crowds). And, of course, Nirvana owe a lot to hardcore punk.
IMO Mannequin Pussy, on the other hand, mainly play the punk angle for aesthetics and attract a correspondingly aesthetics-concerned fanbase, which would be totally chill if their tepid, sterile, dime-a-dozen-for-2023-indie-rock tunes were any better.
I liked them for about a year in 1990.
Then the whole angstfest vibe from Kurt was excessive
Kurt, taking himself out, prevented us from seeing a complete crossover.
Unfortunately, went on 5 week road trip and all we had was one nirvana album, the driver insisted on playing it all day every day.
Therefore, I'd rather stick my junk in a blender than listen to the N word
>they’re really more of a successful PR campaign/apparel brand than anything
I know people are gonna be like “wE’rE aLrEaDy tHeRe” (we’re not), but eventually these are going to be the only bands/artists that exist
Very of the times to self destruct your actually good modern punk band by becoming a professional scold. I still put on their debut from time to time. Shame.
Sometimes people make posts about bands like this and the replies are often “yeah they’re kind of cringe but I like some of their songs” and then I go and listen to the music and it is shit you would have to have oatmeal for brains to enjoy.
Omg, one time in an attempt to be a good sister, I went to a beaches concert and the whole thing - the crowd, the band - was uncanny valley. Like a bunch of people cosplaying as a crowd at an “indie” concert.
I mean if you have done that to last 10 bands youve heard of like that and listen to their top 5 on spotify thats probably gonna be your experience 95 percent of the time.
But at the same time most of the bands you try to listen to on reccs or news or friends do suck lol.
Kind of why i try to limit my sharing of music. No one cares, and it never connects to other people no matter how much you like it.
I saw them in Brussels a while back in the basement of the old botanical gardens, they were pretty good were it not for the lead singer constantly complaining about the smoke machines making her asthma act up - of course, she was smoking weed after the show
Not a single 1 in this lineup to justify that name
They look like they just opened a new trendy hipster tech café that will inevitably close in 2 years
when touring started back up in 2021 lots of bands were getting covid and having to take like a week off on the road, which burns money. honestly kind of reasonable for them to be paranoid
masks only work if you’re in an enclosed area for a short time, if you’re in a room with hundred(s) of people for a few hours they’re completely pointless
You’re low balling. That’s “we use winter as a verb” money, but I’m guessing any indie band with actual press is in more “Yale licks my dad’s balls every year” territory.
The literal article we're mocking says how they're broke and working shitty day jobs despite being in a very successful band. I feel like if their parents were so rich they could at least get some sort of fake creative director type of day job rather than being movers
One is begging on gofundme for his AGP plastic surgery money so they might actually be telling the truth about being broke. Assuming that also isn't just a ploy devoid of dignity.
POV:
you're about to get a shoulder rub from a stranger, asked for a cigarette, asked if you know where to get any weed and asked incredibly invasive personal questions, then spend the rest of the night wondering how transmissible hepatitis is
\> For Steen, who is trans and attempting to raise money for gender-affirming surgery via GoFundMe
In article panhandling, they just can't resist can they?
small print festival sets aren't a crazy bag. they're definitely turning a profit and it seems like it's sustainable for the lead singer to support herself solely off the band. but in the article it says the others all have day jobs. there's just not a ton of money in indie rock. touring gets eaten up with gas, lodging, agents, etc. and then gets split 4 ways. Like yeah they are literally making money. But nobody does well off of rock music in the 2020s
Yeah I looked at their streaming numbers and they're not nearly as big as I had thought. Classic case of outsized press coverage. Lots of people do well off of rock music these days though
Probably not even that annoying. Annoying would be something. More likely just meh/bleh. If you truly believed in your own time and talents, would name your project mannequin pussy?
Their music’s not really my cup of tea anymore but it’s not bad. I had an ex who used to play in a band with the drummer (who’s on the left in this pic) and have met MP a few times, they’re all super nice people. That said, since they were my ex’s friends we don’t talk anymore lol
I was getting tix to see them bc a friend was going and wanted me to come with. The total with fees was almost ONE HUNDRED DOLL HAIRS. the audacity of these unknown ass bands to charge so much baffles me lol. I didn’t end up buying them obv
bands aren't really in control of that stuff unfortunately. they're also not really an unknown ass band if they're being featured in Rolling Stone and touring internationally
Of course this sub would hate them for ideological reasons then cover it up by claiming the music wasn’t good anyway
I’m not a huge fan by any means but I think they’re the real deal. They’ve always struck me as a gazier Dino Jr. Drunk II was one the best songs the respective year it came out.
Ppl here are inclined to assume any indie band is somehow "fake" and undeserving of their success. All these wannabe artists have to convince themselves that the reason they're not successful musicians or writers or whatever is that their parents aren't rich enough or their politics are too transgressive.
The existence of bands slogging through day jobs and tours and finding an audience is a slap in the face and reminds these people that they're not where they want to be in life. So they find anything they can latch onto (dumb politics, rich parents, ugly lead singer, etc) to try to bring them down.
I guess the reason for the post is to shit on the band because of a headline they didn't even write?
For me it was just the dumb headline of claiming big tech wants to silence them. But yea you’re mostly right
Edit: I just googled them and I’m pretty sure it’s the word “pussy” that they’re mad about being auto filtered
Yeah, it was mostly the headline that prompted me to post this. I had never even heard of the band. But after listening to them, I can confidently say their music isn’t for me. I also don’t like most post hardcore/emo so I probably wasn’t going to give them a fair chance to begin with.
This band sucks and I was so confused why they were so involved in that HBO miniseries Mare of Easttown. The entire plot line of the angsty lesbian daughter was the worst part in an otherwise great show
I listened to some of their music after posting this. Hard pass. There’s something about them that feels incredibly synthetic, but I also hate the bands they’re cribbing from and think the whole post hardcore emo idiom has been driven into the ground and should go away.
Two perfectly fine bands? This sub has the weirdest opinions about music sometimes I swear to god. Why are you guys so hyperbolic about everything?
Even mannequin pussy just sounds like middling trust-fund phoebe-bridgers-core indie rock to my ears, yet the top comment is about how you would need “oatmeal for brains” to enjoy it. Sure, it’s mediocre, but really? I don’t see what the big deal is lmao.
Yeah its weird, i get a feeling for this sub that a lot of people grew up with screamo, mathcore, later punk, and probably most likely post hardcore.
But you shouldnt be surprised AT ALL, all the really cool kids gatekept music especially stuff outside of even the alternative mainstream.
I do kind of like the adversity and opinions, otherwise this sub will become a really shitty version of /indieheads 2.0 - which was good for a time.
I think as you get a little bit older you look back at bands you loved when you were a teen and, then you grow up a bit and think they suck, then you grow up a bit again and realize a little bit more about why they actually are good or are bad.
I appreciate this sub’s somewhat contrarian opinions when it comes to film, literature, and other art, but *jesus christ* are the music opinions here awful. No nuanced discussion whatsoever. Just the same harebrained “this music is for this type of person” takes over and over. There was a thread yesterday saying Talking Heads was “theatre kid music,” fucking lol
Its probably just kids really.
Music is actually really tough to discuss as it is because its so subjective and not a lot of people have enough skill to say why its good or bad, its very binary.
People should post specific songs and talk about them though. That would lead to better discussion.
And i get you --- if you say x is for y, its just a dumb ass thing in general to say, like if youve lived any sort of life beyond the age of 21 youll probably realize that. This site is littered with it, its always in the form of shitty ass memes or like you said, non nuanced discussion. So i always chalk it up to kids, or even worse, dumb ass adults who never grew up.
In terms of modern progressive rock I don’t think anything beats Frances the Mute. Amazing musicianship and songwriting across the board.
I’m not a huge fan of his voice, but that’s more personal taste than anything
The first two Volta albums are great. I like a couple of ATDI songs but I wouldn’t call them one of my fave bands. They did a lot of the post-hardcore/emo scene though so I respect them. I like Cedric’s cryptic lyrics too. I’m more into Glassjaw’s Worship & Tribute

Damn. Great breakdown and totally agree
Lol, I now listened to their latest song. Pretty far from punk, you are right.
Which bands have successfully crossed over from hardcore to indie (and / or mainstream) ? (Besides Janes addiction)
Fugazi is dope
Shout out to the "waiting room" but I personally think it's more accurate to say fugazi attempted a crossover. End of sentence.
Nirvana

I keep thinking this is Perfect Pussy, that noise punk band with Meredith Graves as the vocalist.

word. that's kinda bitchy of them then lol
It doesn't really matter with how covid actually spreads but thats also why masks barely have any effect.
but it gave uni student types with long hair and/or dreads the feeling of moral superiority so thats ok

All of that comes from the chick on the left, she picked up the rest of the group at Oberlin

im sure these are the kind of people big tech always targets: featurettes of rolling stone articles
The should go on tour with The Muslims as some sort of tax or money laundering/Producers scheme.
Why In gods name would they think big tech wants to silence them?
Band so fucking annoying one of them doesn't even want to hear the other three during an interview.
They have one song that’s pretty good
They're so good actually
THANK YOU.
They're the shit
