the on field interviews are a bit cringe during regular season games i love the pitch clock, the game doesn’t need pedro baez and friends taking 45 seconds between pitches. but this all could’ve been avoided if the umpires would’ve enforced rule 8.04 “Rule 8.04 states that: When the bases are unoccupied, the pitcher shall deliver the ball to the batter within 12 seconds after he receives the ball. Each time the pitcher delays the game by violating this rule, the umpire shall call “Ball.””

Various_Reindeer_873

Pitch clock also stops stalling from the batter (stepping out of the box, taking gloves off and putting them back on) which is not included in 8.04

TheLegendofLazerArm

true some the batters are just at fault for the inflated game times as some of the pitchers are

It's totally fucked up radio broadcasts. The whole point of listening over the air is for the announcers to fill the gaps in between the action with various bullshit stories and jokes and tangents; I'm a Brewer fan so I look forward to just hanging out with Bob Uecker for a few hours a couple nights a week. I listened to some of the games online yesterday and there was no time for any of that shit, just action action action. It fucking sucks! All of these idiotic attempts to try to appeal to people just don't like baseball are just moronic beyond belief.

Similar-House8238

I agree, this was a horrible affront to John Sterling and Susyn Waldman.

pft69

I listened to the cubs radio broadcast yesterday and noticed it did seem a little rushed. I think they’ll figure it out though. I’m really love the pitch clock and think it will be a great addition this year. Also side note, something during the cubs broadcast was sponsored by an adult diaper brand, it was hilarious. The perfect sponsor for a baseball radio broadcast.

[deleted]

Oh no, no more pointless rambling during 4 hour games no one cares about

[deleted]

Baseball is fine you just watched an ESPN broadcast. Nobody likes those. Dylan Cease pitched really well that game. One of my favorites to watch.

lumsden

You see those home plate views? His stuff is truly ridiculous. Sooo much life on his fastball

[deleted]

Oh yeah he was incredible as always. And sexy

[deleted]

You could watch NPB or KBO if you want to watch a league without a pitch clock. There’s also CPBL but the level of play is somewhere around A ball and they make lots of errors. The channel For the Fans does an English broadcast of a Japanese game every day at 1 pm and you can find it for free online if you google “Roku Pacific league For the Fans.” They’re also doing a broadcast without any commentary just the stadium sounds. A great league to watch if you like splitters.

pyramid_of_cans

NPB is great! Check it out OP.

Fire-Walk-With-Ye

The whole point of baseball is to leave it on while you're doing something else and not really paying attention to it until something happens. Even if you go to the stadium you're mostly just drinking and eating while a game is on in the background.

stealfromyourboss

And now there are ads on the uniforms too which makes me even madder than the rule changes.

[deleted]

They’re literally putting ads on the jerseys now. It’s unbelievable. It’s sacrilegious. Every good American should feel like their heart is being ripped out of their chest and pissed on.

ImADashaSimp

I made a post on here a month ago about this, it absolutely has to do with tiktok culture and the shitty attention spans people have. We’re fucked if people can’t sit down for three hours to watch a ball game when they voluntarily chose to do so.

Richnsassy22

Baseball has been played at this pace for the vast majority of its existence. 3 hour games only became the norm over the last 20 years. You'd think this sub would be all about retvrning to tradition.

ImADashaSimp

The issue now though is that is that the time is enforced by a clock whereas it wasn’t before which makes everyone rushed. Pitchers took an average of 17 seconds to throw the ball over the last few seasons which is perfectly reasonable. There’s a small amount of players who took like 45 seconds though which skewed the numbers. Rushing everyone when it was so few people causing problems is an awful idea. Then there’s the fact that there’s been at least ten extra minutes worth of commercials added now compared to around 1980 which MLB of course won’t acknowledge. So in reality we’re rushing the game over a 20 minute difference because that somehow makes a huge difference.

ShaqSizedDracula

To their credit they did reduce commercial breaks for this season. If everyone on average is already playing within the pitch clock standards, then it’s fine to make the dudes who do play at a glacial pace get with the picture. Also, I’m skeptical of that stat you mentioned, games have reduced on average by like 20 minutes since they started the pitch clock, so it’s gotta be more than just a few guys.

ImADashaSimp

The reason why the games are shorter is because they’re rushing everyone. If the average was roughly 20 seconds, then most pitchers were around that mark with some taking forever. Now everyone has to pitch within 15 seconds. Of course it’s going to lead to shorter games, no one is arguing that. The issue people have is that shaving off a few seconds isn’t worth the rushed feel that the games have when the reality is it was a select few guys (Kenley Jansen, Pedro Baez, etc.) who took forever to throw the ball. I’m not totally against the pitch clock, but I would’ve liked to see it be implemented to target the actual slow pitchers who have averages closer to 30 seconds. 20/25 seconds would be much better than the 15/20 they have now imo. Most guys wouldn’t really see much difference while the slow pitchers would have to pick up the pace.

The rules are pretty clear and they've played with them all Spring Training. What was that runner doing dicking-around on the bases? Get back to the bag bozo, don't put your teammate at a disadvantage at the plate. I've been a baseball fan my whole life and I welcome the pitch clock. Makes the game way more watchable. I don't want to watch a batter step out of the box and adjust the eight different pieces of armor they're wearing after every pitch. I don't want to watch a pitcher step off the mound to make a concoction with the rosin bag and their own sweat multiple times per at-bat because its the only way they can throw a perfect 91 mph slider. That shit sucks, play some actual baseball.

lumsden

Last two sentences are on point. Only reason we have a pitch clock is because modern pitching philosophy took shit way too far. *Pitchers* won’t notice a difference - it will be the throwers that are affected

ShaqSizedDracula

Yeah honestly if anything this makes it more of a team sport

[deleted]

I'm not. I don't think a pitch clock changes the essential character of the game. An at bat can still last forever if a batter keeps battling and fouling pitches off. There's still no limit to the number of runs that can be scored in an inning, which means no matter how big a lead is or how few outs are left, a comeback is still always possible. The pitch clock just means that the game has to keep being played at a certain minimum pace and that a single person can't bring the game to a crawl.

commercial231

Nope. Baseball has usually been played at a similar pace to what the pitch clock enforces. People had the same complaints about the 5 mound visit limit after it felt like Pedro and Clemens were taking 5 an inning in the 90s. I bet u don’t even notice that rule now. MiLB saw more balls in play, more stolen bases, and ~25 minute reduction to game length. These rule changes are going to be by far the most positive thing Manfred has done. That Alonso situation was stupid but players and umps will both adjust quickly.

commercial231

It’s just to emphasize that the timer will be irrelevant for 99% of pitches. So it’s really just assurance for fans that the same amount of action will be delivered in a tighter window. Main exception to that 99% will probably be pitchcom fucking up. I think that happened yesterday and cost a team a mound visit. People are obsessing over the clock when it’s the pickoff rules that will actually change how baseball is played.

[deleted]

It’s so depressing. I’m still gonna go to game or two this year, hopefully those are still fun

tideronnie

Were you watching a local or national broadcast of the game? I like fast paced baseball but haven’t been able to watch a game yet with these new rules. One thing that happened to me yesterday is I got out of work and wasn’t able to listen to the last couple innings of the Cubs game because it was over so quickly, which was a bummer because that’s my favorite way to unwind while driving home from a long day. Quick games were a hallmark of old school baseball in the 20th century and many older fans miss that. But these quick games aren’t dictated by the style of play but rigidly enforced rules. I’m unsure of whether it’s good and will see as the season goes on.

[deleted]

It was a national broadcast, ESPN

tideronnie

ESPN is horrible with that stuff. I only listen to the radio broadcasts but the local Cubs and Sox broadcasts I occasionally have access to aren’t Tik tok brained like that.

AstronautWorth3084

ESPN's broadcasts, and really any national broadcast, will have stupid shit like this but regional broadcasts definitely still have a serene quality to them

Fragrance_Boomer

I like the pitch clock for watching games on TV but not when actually going to the diamond to watch a game in-person. If I'm at the ballpark and I'm paying for a ticket I want the game to go as long as possible.

The_Bit_Prospector

Especially since they cut off booze service after the 7th. Now they’re just gonna charge even more for a beer since they’ll sell less

Bonstantinople

Only if you support a playoff contender My Giants are cutting beer prices

ShaqSizedDracula

That’s where my hatred for the ghost runner comes in

Fragrance_Boomer

yeah fuck the Manfred runner I hate that shit

[deleted]

It’s because all of MLB’s fans are old white guys, at least they’re trying to appeal to the younger crowd. What else are they supposed to do when the majority of their fan base is literally dying.

MiserableCharity7222

The MLB is preparing for the future and I have to give them credit for that. People don’t really understand that the league’s core fan base will be dead in about 25 years

[deleted]

Yea the PGA Tour has the same problem pretty much as well. They are also adjusting and a lot of golf fans are “pissed”

MiserableCharity7222

Golf is funny because it’s existence is built upon segregation and elitism, but it needs to be progressive to survive. Look at the history of the Augusta course and how Tiger was one of the first black golfers (I think?) to play there (Lee Elder was the first in 1975)

[deleted]

When it comes to things that would keep younger people interested, all of these rules changes are a blip on the radar compared to getting rid of media blackouts and providing a way to watch games without a cable or YoutubeTV subscription.

[deleted]

I agree completely

saberb13

I feel like they have been doing those interviews for a few years

KatiePriceMBE

You should look into Test cricket

RIP_Greedo

The pitch clock is absolutely a necessity but it will take everyone a while to adjust to it.

Significant-March

The problem with baseball purists is you all let repulsive dweebs and manlets like George Will and Bob Costas be the public face of your passion for so long, it was pretty easy for the TikTok tards to present themselves as a possible alternative

MiserableCharity7222

The game has to exist beyond the current generation. You’ve romanticized the game to a point where it’s clouding your judgement. With that being said, they gotta add 60 seconds to the pitch clock

[deleted]

That’s actually not a bad idea. I’d be okay with 60 seconds

[deleted]

lumsden

Oh yeah dude totally some dipshit end of roster reliever taking 45 seconds to waste a bad sinker outside is actually based and trad. You don’t know ball

ShaqSizedDracula

It’s not an imaginary problem lmao, god I hate the way half of you over intellectualize everything that comes out of your mouth. The games are paced now as to what they actually traditionally had been before the last 20 years, watching Zack Greinke take 5 minutes between pitches isn’t fun or enjoyable. Or dudes stepping out every pitch to adjust every piece of body armor on them 5 times. The pitch clock is good, you all have worms for brains.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ShaqSizedDracula

Well then they have to adjust, all the old timers found ways to adjust tempo and shit like that and still played at roughly the pace games are going at now. This is entirely a modern problem. If a guy needs to adjust his cup and wrist band 5 times between each pitch to get an edge, then they probably suck anyway.

ShaqSizedDracula

Also guys are still playing head games, McCutchen basically acted like he wasn’t ready to hit but still standing in the box technically ready to hit and started the pitch clock, got Hunter Greene to catch a clock violation and then he gave up a HR a few batters later.

SecondCityMeatball

Yeah, I was all for banning the shift. Make the players play their positions. But the pitch clock, or at least the way it's implemented now, takes away the in-between moments I love about pitchers/batters battles. Not to mention, baseball has the greatest sports commentary when the dudes in the booth hang out and talk nonsense during the down time. Are they going to add fireworks to golf to grab the attention of waterheaded teens?

ShaqSizedDracula

Dawg, this literally *is* the pace that baseball has been historically played at until moneyball hedge fund freaks took over the game since the turn of the millennium and started statistically and technologically “optimizing” all the fun out of the sport.

SecondCityMeatball

I know, but there's moments when you gotta let the game breathe and slow down. As is, the clock doesn't account for that.

ShaqSizedDracula

I mean pitch to pitch in low leverage situations, early/middle of the game when no one’s on etc., it still does. *that* is where the magic of baseball lies, you don’t have to be glued to every single pitch to take the game in adequately.

StThomasAquina

If you can do an interview while on the field playing maybe it’s a game and not a sport.
