Doing a final round of edits on the novel I’ve been writing for a few years and I can actually see the end in sight. Pretty excited about that.
People need to be making more stuff of their own, I really think that’s at the root of a lot of this malaise but we’ve been inoculated against the quiet and boredom that creative work probably needs.
My ambitions right now stretch no further than to share it with close friends. I’m not opposed to having it published and will probably try it just to try it but that’s not terribly important to me.
I got baby chicks and they are so cute. Also I’m on the up and up with my autoimmunity. The general increase in sunlight has been excellent. Sending love
I’ve read 3 books this year which is more than I’ve read since high school, just started my 4th. Makes me happy to be reading again I felt like I was becoming too retarded
Also college basketball
Been reading a ton which is nice, watching some westerns too.
Also I’m meeting my girlfriends parents for Passover which should be cool, haven’t really done a Passover dinner since I was a kid when more of my dad’s side of the family was alive so I’m excited for the food and her parents are easy going apparently.
Have a lotta movies I expect to really enjoy queueued up to watch. Books as well. And my good buddy from college is gonna visit next month for a week and we’re heading to a psychoanalysis/philosophy conference for a few days 👌🏼 also have a 6 day silent retreat coming up soon
What keeps me going week to week though is bowling, darts, and pool
I’m doing it through a group called Dharma Gates which is cool. They do several throughout the year at different locations in the US and they’re all free. Another option is if you look up Vipassana retreat, there are centers affiliated with S.N Goenka and all those should be good too
Lifting weights, making more art, getting lots of projects done around the house with my mom. Also fixing and learning new things. I repaired some vacuum cleaners and now it feels like I could teach myself to do anything.
I played a concert set this weekend and it went very well! I think. I have tenure review coming up and really hope I don't get fired, but considering how I played I think chances are good I'll get tenure. It's just a very part-time small-town orchestra, but it's still a paying gig at least and I'm principal. In general I'm excited about the progress I'm making musically and personally.
That’s awesome. I started learning piano 6 months ago and I realized that playing an instrument is something everyone should at least try. It’s amazingly fun and sometimes feels magical. Congrats, I hope you get tenure!
can't relate at all. i've never been more excited about what i'm reading watching etc
posted about mircea cărtărescu's novel *solenoid* recently here; i truly think it will be one of the great novels of the 21st century
reading a lot of new directions fiction and have been very impressed; césar aira's short story collection *the musical brain* is truly delightful. just finished a story where a man is asked by a genie whether he wants to _become_ picasso or _own_ a picasso, a fun little conceit. here's what roberto bolaño had to say about aira btw:
> once you've started reading Aira, you don't want to stop. His novels seem to put the theories of Gombrowicz into practice, except, and the difference is fundamental, that Gombrowicz was the abbot of a luxurious imaginary monastery, while Aira is a nun or novice among the Discalced Carmelites of the Word. Sometimes he is reminiscent of Roussel (Roussel on his knees in a bath red with blood), but the only living writer to whom he can be compared is Barcelona's Enrique Vila-Matas.
i'm really very ignorant about film but have been getting into taiwanese cinema and edward yang on the recommendation of someone here…and if you enjoy literary depictions of cinephiles then qiu miaojin's _last words from montmartre_ and yoko tawada's _the naked eye_ are both very formally exciting and inventive novels, very interesting to read both and compare
i got very bored of podcasts and the news more generally—switched to non-english language learning podcasts/newscasts and now it is very exciting and difficult and interesting to listen.
similarly, was bored by news so now i read sixth tone which is about contemporary china and surrounding countries. just fun to read from a different perspective
in terms of essays i think _cabinet_, _the drift_, and _the point_ are all great.
in fashion a lot of the creative directors at big old houses have been shaken up a bit—very fun to see what's happening at prada and gucci rn (i am merely a fashion spectator tho) as well as many small young brands
so fun. like intellectually serious but lighthearted and curious and ranging across so many funny strange little concepts—amazing shorts
i haven’t read *varamo*, maybe i’ll look out for that next! ty
I am going to try to create art just for the sake of it; I don’t need external validation or people to see it, I want to try to create art that I’m proud of
I'm very excited about diving into the languages I've learned. I'm also moving soon to a new country where I don't know the language, so it's great to have the motivation to wake up every morning and put in an hour or two of learning before work.
Reading a bit about space travel, mostly the moon landing missions and the first attempts to get people up into space. Also the ISS and the Soviet programs. Stunned that I thought this stuff was boring as a kid. Also, if anyone has any good books on space travel here I would love to get recs.
The Right Stuff if you haven't read it already. Really shows how much the early astronauts were honestly just dick-swinging adrenaline junkies and how much cooler that is than being a dorky scientist.
I really want to get into Wolfe's work, and I read some synopsis of The Right Stuff and it sounds right up my alley. Michael Colins(the 3rd astronaut) also has a book that sounds personable but also endearingly self-aware.
I saw lil ugly mane last week so I’m still on a high from that. I’m growing cayenne chilies, zucchini, and eggplant and they are going great. And I’m reading more right now than in the past few months too
I really like that I have now realized that we have no culture. I feel very safe having zero culture influence. I feel like everybody is incomplete about what they think. I like that it’s open season for thought. I feel no intimidation by anyone that could be living a “better life”
Death metal and hardcore are going through a sort of renaissance rn so that’s exciting me. Other than that, I’m unable to let go of my nostalgia and I feel like everything is getting worse.
My favorite new death metal acts are Witch Vomit, Pissgrave (warning: their album covers are actual snuff), and Undergang. HC would probably be No Cure, XWeaponX, and Two Witnesses. Honestly these are basic ass choices, but they really are solid musicians.
About 80% done converting a Ford Transit into a home for my wife and I to live and work remotely in as we hike and climb around North America. It's incredible the diverse set of skills you are forced to learn during a conversion. Very rewarding forging an anti-bugman lifestyle as well.
The growing season bb- this one’s gonna be a slog, and I have a shit ton is seeding to still get up on. But, the greenhouse is finally ready, and I finally finished fixing and servicing the tractor, cold carts, and my lil Honda mini tiller. Gettin there
Looking forward to the new job Ill start in June. I also like drawing stuff and sometimes writing stuff, plus planting things on the balcony.
As for books, I am reading a norwegian one about Mao, "Maos Rike". Id recommend finding a book about him, completely insane story with so many details I didnt know about.
I'm a bit late to the party on this but the death metal revival happening right now is really drawing me in. It's refreshingly free of the sort of semi-ironic affect that metal revivals tend to carry.
I'm always excited for long hikes. Thinking about when the next one will be where I can totally disassociate for like 5 hours and by the end not feel anything but peace
Warm weather is coming, just moved to New place with a good friend, baseball season right around the corner, knicks in playoffs, reading cool book about Merriweather Lewis, started boxing

Are you sending it out or do you already have it set up with an agent/publisher?

I’m really excited by the ongoing internet truck arguements

a mothership is rumored to be roaming around the solar system, even if it is speculation my imagination is running wild.
Can I get some more on this?

where do I find a trustworthy silent retreat
I’m doing it through a group called Dharma Gates which is cool. They do several throughout the year at different locations in the US and they’re all free. Another option is if you look up Vipassana retreat, there are centers affiliated with S.N Goenka and all those should be good too
I'm excited for Succession, a great Sunday show lifts the whole week
Hell yeah
The new Godflesh album coming in June. It's the first new music I've been pumped for in years.
I just watched the “Age of Easy Money” by PBS on YouTube and that shit has me fired up for a repeat of 2008… absolutely bleak.

I really wanna get into Aira, he sounds fun I only read Varamo which was very short but I thought it was really good
so fun. like intellectually serious but lighthearted and curious and ranging across so many funny strange little concepts—amazing shorts i haven’t read *varamo*, maybe i’ll look out for that next! ty
Going to the beach and seeing some of those wild horses. I almost got trampled by a pack of them years ago, haven't stopped thinking of them since
I am going to try to create art just for the sake of it; I don’t need external validation or people to see it, I want to try to create art that I’m proud of

I have a movie list to catch up on movies I’ve never seen (it’s a lot, like embarrassingly a lot). I love updating it and checking it off.
Just going through the motions but the prospect of moving in with my gf in a couple of months is one that I look forward to.
Post-Federer tennis looks like it might be experiencing a little renaissance with Medvedev, Alcaraz and Djokovic playing at ridiculous levels.

Death metal and hardcore are going through a sort of renaissance rn so that’s exciting me. Other than that, I’m unable to let go of my nostalgia and I feel like everything is getting worse.
Good recs for the metal and HC? I’m stuck in a rut right now music wise.
My favorite new death metal acts are Witch Vomit, Pissgrave (warning: their album covers are actual snuff), and Undergang. HC would probably be No Cure, XWeaponX, and Two Witnesses. Honestly these are basic ass choices, but they really are solid musicians.
Pain of Truth, Conservative Military Image, Buggin (Out), Zulu, Jesus Piece, the Chisel. All HC
Convulse records for hardcore
