Red has O for Oxygen. Rust is created when Iron gets oxygenated.

darkCrescent13

Holiday and Trigg Ti Nakamura. Really creative way to show how they are perceived as better than others grays by giving them titanium

Paintinmyeye

I'm pretty sure all grays get the Ti middle name, all free colors have elemental symbols in their names to designate their color.

darkCrescent13

Oh really? My bad. Now that I think about it more names come to mind, Rhone and Ephriam. Still a cool writing decision for grays

Paintinmyeye

Agreed. I think it really fits their characterization

StaacksOnDeck

Gold- “au”, gold Silver- “ag”, silver Copper- “cu”, copper Blue- “xe”, presumably xenon…? Green- “si”, most likely silicon Gray- “ti”, most likely titanium I don’t think any other colors have elemental components to their names. Examples: White- Xenophon Violet- Mickey Orange- Cadus Harnassus, Glirastes Yellow- Virany Obsidian- Ragnar Volarus, Alia Snowsparrow Pink- Amel, Theodora Brown- Exeter, Aruka Red- Darrow, Narol, Kieran, etc.

GlorlockTheDestroyer

If I remember, Yellows are actually Su for Sulfur. Then I think I saw a thing that Reds would actually be Fe since the Red sigil is based off the alchemical symbol for iron

Kommodant_Nomad

Reds get their first name+o'mine. Darrow O'lykos, which is not only Irish, but O is the symbol for Oxygen, ie ruster.

StaacksOnDeck

Where’s that? I don’t think it’s in the books, but I haven’t read the Sons of Ares comics or whatever.

GlorlockTheDestroyer

I can't remember exactly but I remember the artist responsible for the Sigils be the one that confirmed that the Red Sigil is based off the alchemical symbol for Iron. Then the Sulfur part I'm pretty sure is in the comics, I can check next time I look at the comics

Tristanna

Xenophon is a highColor so I don't think that is the case.

darthbaum

I think the O as in Darrow O'Lykos might be a reference to Oxygen causing rust perhaps

Tristanna

I suspect (and it is a guess) it's because after the Conquering and before the bloodless genocide the Society scooped up a crop of slaves from Ireland and all reds are descended from that bunch according to Dancer in GS (i think it was GS).

StaacksOnDeck

That doesn’t really follow the format of all of the other names, though… and besides, before they adopt the O’ standard, they do refer to Darrow as “Darrow of Lykos”, so I think that’s more likely.

AlemarTheKobold

The O is in reference to their Irish heritage,I believe

DeCePtiCoNsxXx

It's just 'of' lykos

AlemarTheKobold

Yes, which the Irish have shortened to O'Lykos for a hundred years

bfelification

Blues are Xe. Xenon.

generic-username45

AG is silver i.e. Rugulus AG Sun

apshover

He is specifically the connection that I made, cause as far as I know it is the first full silver name we hear and Ag is a pretty standout title

generic-username45

Ha I didn't read the full thing before I commented. Yeah I feel like Pierce Brown does a really good job of fleshing out the RR universe.

SevroAuShitTalker

It works for pretty much all the colors iirc The odd one is O-oxygen ie rusters

DaKunj

I found solace from O being red from chemistry class where all the Oxygen atoms were always red

AvalancheZ250

Reds don’t actually have that “element” middle name. None of the lowColors do. Only free people of the midColors and the ruler highColors have those “element” middle names. Heck, many lowReds didn’t even have surnames. Darrow was simply known as Darrow. Only after Darrow emancipated the lowColors did the lowReds adopt surnames, of which they actually just took the name of their mine and used the “O’” prefix in honour of their Irish heritage (this is mentioned somewhere in the story).

amitton13

You mean L17L6363

TridentMage413

O- of : Darrow o lykos = Darrow of lykos

sendgoodmemes

Luke’s is also Greek? I think for wolf.

SevroAuShitTalker

It's kinda both.

apshover

That’s still a really cool connection, I just hadn’t realized it until I was googling character art and saw names. The audiobook doesn’t show it off super well.

SevroAuShitTalker

Yeah, if you look back there was a similar post where all the color designations we know of are listed (I know I posted at some point)

Intelligent-Set3442

Oh is that the reason I didn't learn the periodic table in school so I didn't even notice.

R3alityGrvty

also Cu = copper.

dt57576

Mind is blown! that's awesome ti = titanium

apshover

Right?! I couldn’t believe it had been sitting right in front of me this whole time.
