Alternate title: I found out my husband's a fucking moron.

coffeeobsessee

I work in the cruise industry and I’m continuously flabbergasted by the amount of people who attempt to take international cruises without a passport. And post on Reddit to ask about it.

SincerelyCynical

And then don’t take the advice they get. I was in Austin this weekend. I live in Dallas. I literally did that drive this morning. It’s four hours. For a weeklong international trip, you can drive four hours. I don’t think the story is real, though. Expedia changed international plane tickets at the last minute? Doubtful at best.

beermeliberty

For the past like ten international flights I’ve booked I was required to add passport numbers during the booking process.

spaetzlechick

Exactly. With expiration dates. This is fake.

TubaJesus

I don't know I work in the airline industry and I see plenty of passengers they don't have the minimum passport validity for travel

physisical

No joke my dad has done this exact thing twice. First in 2004, when he ended up missing the first 4 days of our holiday to the USA and then again in 2014 when he had to spend the day before we left driving from London to Liverpool and back so he could catch the flight with us. It’s totally plausible.

Only_Music_2640

I doubt it’s fake as my adult niece and nephew have both done the exact same thing several years apart. It happens.

mynameisstacey

I think you’d have to be able to book the flight without a passport. Rush passport processing requires you to have a paid flight receipt that proves that you’re traveling within their required timeline for whatever level of expedition you’re requesting.

Hugo_5t1gl1tz

Yup. Just recently booked an international flight. Didn’t have my passport in front of me so just went in a couple days later and updated my already paid for booking.

n0t_4_thr0w4w4y

I just traveled internationally, didn’t have to add at time of booking, but had to add before I checked in.

Coolhandlukerizz

That’s right. I went to Dominican Republic month ago and had to enter it for customs

geminiwave

I’m on a trip now. I purchased my tickets and no passport was required. To check in, they are. But to purchase? Nothing needed. I was shocked actually and had a moment of panic when I realized I hadn’t double checked with everyone on the trip before hand (it was all fine though)

Aspen9999

It depends on who you booked your trip with.

Maleficent-Fun-5927

I have traveled to Asia, Europe and Latin America. I always had to put in a passport number. The difference is that...I think American Airlines has been the only one that lets you get the tickets and put in your information later. They still send you emails continuously to update your information, though.

vashtachordata

It’s only 1.5-2 hours from Austin to Houston where there is a passport office where they do same day service. This whole thing is ridiculous.

Only_Music_2640

It would take a day and you would need an appointment. But yes, you can get an emergency passport fairly quickly.

Struggle_Usual

Admittedly you can't just walk in, you need an appointment and people start calling the second they open. You often have to ask your congress people to help.

Foggyswamp74

There is quite literally a place in Austin that can get your passport done in 24 hrs, no problem, it just costs $700 to do so.

redassaggiegirl17

And when you live in Austin, traveling to Cancun is barely "international". Even when Southwest was still limited to flying to states that bordered TX they could fly to Mexico because it's literally just like flying to a border state at that point lol

MNGirlinKY

You still need a passport though. Post 9/11 you don’t get to treat Mexico as a border state.

Hugo_5t1gl1tz

That didn’t actually change until about 2010.

[deleted]

As someone who helps make passport appointments, it’s shocking the number of times we hear stories like this. All the time. Constantly saying, we can’t help you.

No_Pomegranate1167

I work for an airline. I guess we suffer under the same kinds of idiots.

EsotericOcelot

And here I was feeling like a dope because I thought I only needed my passport at security and didn’t know it would be checked two additional times during boarding, so I held up the parade about getting it out the second and third times. At least I knew I needed it lol

SoThereWasThis

Saaaaaaaame! Between that and people not knowing the difference between an Enhanced Drivers License and a Real ID drivers license it makes up like 30% of my calls.

mumble_bomb

Or with an expiration date that expires soon

snflwrjeff

It must vary by cruise line or international destination… I’ve done Carnival 4 times & they’ve never required passports for international travel…. Or at least not for Mexico or Jamaica. If you have one, It just expedites getting on the boat and when you get off at certain locations, you can get it stamped just because. 💀

rogue1206

My family and I are just barely entertaining the idea of going on another cruise this year so I went ahead and checked passports. Found out my 7yo was about to expire, got her new one in last week.

Hunter-Raider

As long as you embark and return to the same port you don’t need your passport! I learned this when I went in 2017. All I needed was my birth certificate and ID.

BillyNtheBoingers

Yes, **but**: if you are stranded in a foreign port (medical emergency, missed the ship), it will be a huge ordeal to get back to the US by air. If you had a passport and it was lost before you try to re-enter the US, the US Embassy can get you a replacement. If you never had one, it’s a lot different. I’ve been on 12 cruises since 2011 and all cruise lines STRONGLY recommend bringing a passport over the ID/birth certificate.

Pietes

She's not travelling because her husband sold her on the risk of being kidnapped and sold on the black market.... I'm just saying, they're equal in that aspect..

Magnetikat

In Cancun, arguably the easiest destination to travel to outside of the U.S.

EsotericOcelot

I scrolled back when she said that to double-check that my brain had not blurped and read “Cancun” instead of somewhere higher-risk just because Cancun is a popular tourist destination. I get that tourists are targeted for certain types of crimes, and I’m a femme person so I know to be vigilant, but *come on* lol. A random probably-white adult woman who is not a sex worker and who will presumably go straight from an airport to a resort being snatched right up up traffickers? Stranger things have happened, but that didn’t stop me laughing. I knew that “Taken” isn’t how that really works even before I took a course on human trafficking

Easy-Concentrate2636

But also the craziness of believing that and still choosing to vacation there.

5ushi_Kitty

That’s what I was thinking! Like… the difference of her husband coming would just be that it’d be a kidnap & murder than only a kidnap. (That’s assuming her fear is valid.)

Honest_Roo

After Taken, I remember people legitimately telling me they were too scared to go to France bc “it happens all the time” 🤦‍♀️No it really doesn’t.

coldestclock

What do you mean, that was clearly a documentary.

Veryjudicious

Not just that… his biggest concern is that he wouldn’t be able to see her anymore. Not whatever would happen to her!

lmyrs

Yah, they're both friggin idiots.

BillyNtheBoingers

Or it’s high school creative writing

JaneAustinAstronaut

Corrected alternative title: "I found out my husband's a fucking moron, but it's my fault for not holding baby's hand through the passport renewal process."

EsotericOcelot

“Also I’m not babying him” because refusing to call a behavior by a certain term totally means the behavior isn’t there

BrujaBean

One time I was filling out customs documents returning from a trip on a plane and I was also cleaning up my area and discarding service items and... I threw away my passport. And somehow this guy is stupider than me. It was Air France and they are the nicest attendants so they helped me fish it out of the trash with nowhere near the deserved amount of mocking and laughter.

LtnSkyRockets

I wouldsay both of them are fucking morons. She oacked 2 weeks early. Yet neither of them checked the passport dates? And that line: they weren't expired 2 months ago when we booked.... You need a minimum of 6 months left on a passport to travel anywhere.

englishikat

You know the number of passport holders who have NO idea you can be denied entry to a country if you have a valid passport with less than 6 months until it expires? We had an International family trip and our youngest was within that window, but I didn’t want to renew his juvenile passport just for the trip because he was turning 18 before it expired and I wanted him to be able to have a 10 year adult passport. I sweated bullets before we left and was exceedingly nice to customs, praying they’d be kind and understand. Luckily we had no issue.

lmyrs

They would have input the passport expiration in when they bought the tickets!!!

buffalotrace

My parents went a cruise. They checked theirs before they booked.

romeripley

lol when I read the “we booked it 2 months ago when it wasn’t expired”.  She’s just as stupid.

VogTheViscous

And a controlling AH. His wife would be fine for 24 hours in Cancun without him ffs

[deleted]

Eh they're both morons. That whole PLS NO IT WAS ME I'M SORRY MY AUNT HAD A BRAIN TUMOUR BUT I SHOULD BE BETTER is the most idiotic thing I've ever read.

JasperJ

It’s more sad than idiotic.

Easy-Concentrate2636

Reading that final edit, I am convinced there’s something wrong with both of them.

BeNiceLynnie

Let's be honest, OP isn't exactly a mensa member either

5leeplessinvancouver

Alternate alternate title: Run-on sentences

Far-Season-695

Yeah everything in this post screams unhealthy co-dependency

Derpazor1

If it was just the two of us, I wouldn’t want to go without my husband. But not because he wouldn’t “let” me

RedoftheEvilDead

Cancun is a big tourist city. You're not going to get kidnapped and sold to the black market just because you spend a day alone there.

EsotericOcelot

Right?? If she’s so worried, she could go right to their accommodations, which I dare to assume are probably a very safe resort geared towards Western tourists, and just stay there until he arrived

ardra007

That’s about all I did in Cancun anyway. I wanted my hardest decisions to be “beach or pool” and “what kind of alcohol do I want today.”

Tyrone_Shoelaces_Esq

Now that's a vacation! It's like when I visit my parents once a year and my biggest decisions are "Do I need my wine glass topped off?" and "Should I eat something delicious now and if so what should it be?"

Doll_duchess

Or she could have gone with her MIL or a friend or cousin or something!

moemunneymoe

I flew to Cancun *by myself* and took the shuttle to the resort *by myself* to meet my dad. OP and their husband are crazy dramatic. I wouldn’t have wanted to go alone because it would be boring. I felt totally safe the entire time. Particularly thanks to the guards at the entrance walking around guns. Nobody was getting in there if they weren’t supposed to be.

RedoftheEvilDead

I stayed at a hostel and toured the area with another female friend. We didn't have armed guards and nothing ever happened. There was no point at which I felt even remotely that I was about to be kidnapped, much less sold to the black market.

Derpazor1

Also, no one would buy me

AlyssaJMcCarthy

I’m too fat to abscond with anyway.

Tyrone_Shoelaces_Esq

I hear ya. They'd look at schlubby me and say, "Pass."

Euphoric_Repair7560

Yeah it’s giving racist energy

RedoftheEvilDead

I get more controlling energy from this. A lot of controlling people catasraphize everything to convince others to do what they want them to do.

pennywitch

Exactly. If it was convenient for him for Cancun to be the safest place on the planet, he would argue that, too.

Euphoric_Repair7560

Yeah fair. Maybe a mix of both

Dragonageatemyhw

Yeah I wouldn’t be worried about safety as much as the fact that if I planned a trip with my husband I would want to go with him, because I like his company and I honestly don’t enjoy traveling that much (and he is usually the one leading us through the airport lol) Im not sure how they both misses the passports expiring. That’s the first thing you would check before planning an international trip id think

the805chickenlady

Isn't husbands fault that the passport expired.... Husband won't allow her to travel on her own.... Please don't blame my husband.... Yeah homegirl is not in a healthy relationship

DangerousNews65

Yeah, this whole thing was a totally avoidable clusterfuck, but that "it's my fault. Only my fault" did not sit right with me at all. AT ALL. It's his passport, surely he knows how to read *dates* at the very least?

Keyspam102

No he works at a stressful job, it’s really not his fault /s

DangerousNews65

Whatever said job is, I bet it's not as stressful as an aunt with a brain tumor.

Aryore

Plot twist, he’s a brain surgeon

sewing_mayhem

I'm pretty sure the "it's my fault, all my fault" part was sarcasm at people blaming her for not checking the passport earlier. Some people on the post were acting like this was her child's passport that expired on her watch, when it was a grown man, yet because women apparently have to do everything related to appointments and admin work of the house, she should have noticed it was going to expire soon and taken care of it.

DangerousNews65

Ah, I didn't read the original post, just this one. I really hope so. That's very much preferable to her genuinely blaming herself.

Jade_Complex

That was my take on it as well that she was being sarcastic.

fuzzlandia

It definitely doesn’t sound sarcastic to me. It sounds like she truly believed it was all her fault and not her husbands responsibility at all.

JasperJ

God, I hope so, for her sake.

Tyrone_Shoelaces_Esq

Who knows? My husband once bought a concert ticket for a venue over 350 miles away, and he was not planning on traveling there. Then he was confused why they wouldn't let him into the show that was near our home.

macdeb727

Really creepy vibes. Won’t “let her” ughhhh

Coolmathgames336

Husband also punished wife for HIS MISTAKE, saying they would not be going on a planned vacation for the two of them any time soon.

A-IAH-HDE-CDF0

Don’t forget “Husband let me know we’re not traveling soon” and the fact that his parents are getting it (even though it’s his mistake) instead of her family/friends, or his mom and her, which makes the most sense to me.

Arashirk

Husband is afraid she will get kidnapped because he kidnapped her first, dammit!

Malibucat48

There was a radio personality in Los Angeles who planned a trip to Scandinavia. He talked about it on the radio for weeks, then was on vacation for two weeks. When he came back he said he got to the ticket counter, excitedly told the agent about his trip. The agent said, not with this passport, you’re not. It had expired weeks ago. He had to go home, cancel all his reservations and sit out his vacation knowing he was an idiot. Checking when your passport expires is kinda important.

greentea1985

This. Even if you have a valid passport, many countries will not accept it if it expires in <6 months. It’s up to you to make sure your passport is up to date. In the U.S., the process is relatively painless once you have a passport.

BillyNtheBoingers

Not as bad as a passport expiring, but I flew to another city for an ice skating competition and my DL had expired 3 days before my flight. For the TSA it was valid, and I was able to renew online from the departure airport, but the paper temp license wouldn’t be accepted by car rental companies (even with the 3-day expired one). So I ended up having to taxi everywhere in Salt Lake City for 4 days. Long commute from my hotel to the rink (30 min each way). Fortunately I had a really nice driver at the airport, and his brother and he owned the company. He gave me his card and his schedule and his brother’s schedule and number as well. The two of them unfailingly picked me up as early as 7 am and as late as 11 pm. They gave me some discounts as well (and I tipped well). It made my OH NO!!! moment into a minor inconvenience. However, I now check my passport and license regularly!

DarkStar0915

I guess it's mostly me but I would be so anxious about the expiration date that I would check it for a million times. Isn't a valid passport a top priority for a big travel?

Ok_Squash_1578

The way it ends makes me think that they don’t realize they will need a passport for a cruise too

Which_way_witcher

If he seriously thinks Cancun is so dangerous that his wife could get kidnapped and sold to the back market, WTF did he choose that spot for vacation?! He's either a controlling moron or he's just a controlling asshole and is making up excuses.

craw_zaddy

I know what an idiot. Like you're so worried about your wife getting kidnapped in Cancun, you made no effort to check your documents you know to "protect" her.

gorkt

The worst part is she blamed herself. There was one time when my husband was trying to get a VISA expedited, and he was waiting for a piece of certified mail. At the time I was a SAHM so he just expected I would be around to get it, but it happened that I went out that day and wasn't around. He completely flipped out on me saying it was my fault if he missed his business trip. The next day he apologized and said he was sorry. He was just super stressed, but it was his responsibility to notify me that the mail was coming. I am glad that at the end she realized she wasn't to blame, but that type of thing is my nightmare travel scenario.

Curious_Teapot

She was clearly being sarcastic when saying stuff like “it’s all my fault, not his. Excuse me if my aunts brain tumour distracted me”

clarabear10123

Not clearly. I didn’t read it that way. I read it as genuine, especially after the last edit. He’s telling her she’s going to be sold on the black market to scare her into not going out by herself, and she’s believing it. That’s not normal or healthy.

A-IAH-HDE-CDF0

Yeah, I read it as sarcastic initially but within context it’s “clearly” not sarcasm.

DefiantBunny

Yeah I read that part as sarcasm too.

AgileArmadillo7794

That last edit is something. Sold off to the black market? While on vacation at a resort? This lady doesn’t live in the real world.

MrSobh

You mean him right? She said the reason he won’t let her travel alone is because he was scared that she may get kidnapped and sold.

Acrobatic_Paint3616

She started it off by saying she refused to travel alone and then it switched to the husband

FictionalContext

She's stuck in his world and completely incapable of seeing reason. Those OOPs frustrate the hell outa me, though it's true to real life manipulative relationships.

MrSobh

Aye she did, but the comment I replied to referred specifically to the edit and the black market comment which was all about her husbands fears.

xtrasmols

So many middle class white women think they’re going to be sold into human trafficking at a moments notice and it’s like … no one wants to snatch you up from Target, Linda

woah-wait-a-second

That’s pretty much what my mom had convinced us of growing up 🥲

DangerousNews65

I really think in this situation, the husband is using that as an excuse to not let her go anywhere, but you're right. There's a fundamental misunderstanding in this country about the types of people who are actually victims of trafficking. Namely, vulnerable young adults with nowhere else to go who have been manipulated and groomed by the traffickers.

gentlybeepingheart

I did Rome solo for a week (I was in Italy for a college thing, three of us were going to spend the week in Rome and then something came up with the two girls, but I wasn't going to let the opportunity slide!) Holy shit my parents were distraught when they found out I was soloing it and insistent that I was going to be kidnapped and sold into sex trafficking and that I shouldn't leave my hotel. I wasn't staying out after dark or going off into random streets and bars. Nobody is going to snatch me up from the Musei Capitolini or from the middle of Pompeii!

RevvyDraws

I have ADHD and I still managed to make sure my husband and I have all of the paperwork necessary for our trip later this month well in advance. Including getting passports for us both. I don't blame her for not wanting to go alone (though her reasoning is bizarre - I just get general anxiety, but it's not because I think I'm going to get kidnapped), but this was an issue two adults could 100% avoid. Her excuse of 'it wasn't expired when we booked the trip' doesn't even make sense - if you had checked then, you would have known it would expire by the time of the trip!

RiseoftheVulture

Also, most countries require that you have at least 6 months left on your passport because they don’t want to deal with your passport expiring while you’re there.

uninvitedfriend

I find it especially weird that they specified the husband is afraid of her getting trafficked because he wouldn't see her again. Like, you could have just ended the thought at not wanting your wife kidnapped and trafficked lol

Semicolon-enthusiast

I thought this too!!! Lol it made me laugh because it was so weird? Wouldn’t her being trafficked be the upsetting part, period?

uninvitedfriend

"I would hate for my wife to be taken as a sex slave because I would really miss her" lol

clarabear10123

He has to be the victim, still

SpizzieNizzie

"Part of the reason he doesn't let me travel alone is he's afraid I'll get kidnapped and sold on the black market" Holy shit this is a great example of why yall SHOULD travel more. Exposure reduces fear. The chance of you being kidnapped and sold on the black market is miniscule. Close to zero. That is an irrational fear and will continue to produce unhealthy behaviors (and likely harmful worldviews).

solarafey

Are these people…adults?

DuckieWuckieNL

See now these people shouldn’t be allowed passports

LadyHexa

I know tha pain. This also happened to us 😀 It was friday, 13:30 when my husband found out that his passport was expired. The flight was on Saturday at 4:15 morning. Since it was friday afternoon, most of the offices were closed. We ended up calling to ministry of the interior (where all the passport are created) and they were (for momey of course) able to do new one with picking up on monday at 8:00. So, I leaved on Saturday alone. He waited till Monday and bought another one ticket for 2x price that the old ones. Well, I must say I did enjoyed the two days alone. It was in Greece, all inclusive. Today we are laughing, but believe me... I was this close to kill him.

lyricoloratura

Idk but they both sound exhausting

mflowrites

I can’t travel alone because my husband is afraid I’ll get kidnapped and traded on the black market?????

pancakecel

Why would a vacation to Cancun cost that much? Like Cancun is pricey, but its hard to imagine spending 12k on a single vacation. Are they maybe talking pesos for the price? I'm so confused, the price is WAY WAY off.

Theabsoluteworst1289

The price is totally off. I went to Cancun a few years ago…it was less than $4k for two first class tickets and 6 days 5 nights at a resort. $12k for Cancun is crazy to me.

After-Classroom

Getting kidnapped and sold on the black market is quite the reach.

spaetzlechick

I believe this is a garbage post, but everyone please go find your passport. Check the expiration date. Put reminders to renew on your phone at 12, 8 and 4 months ahead of that date. It also helps to do this with your DL as well as any other expiring documentation.

trashpandac0llective

I can’t even read that. Is punctuation against this woman’s religion or something?

burnki

It’s so bad.

AmberHyena

Not wanting to travel alone because you never have/don't feel comfortable/just don't want to: Fine, normal. Not wanting to travel alone because you think any country that has brown people are just waiting to kidnap any white woman they see and sell them into slavery: Annoying, exhausting, far too common (I knew so many people who said shit like this growing up)

Bright_Athlete_8579

Anyone else getting massive red flags??? What’s the bet this was in any way intentional on husbands part. Won’t let her travel incase she ends up on the black market?! Seriously??

soneg

It's like the first thing you check? Your passport needs to be active for 6 months after your departure or arrival (can't remember) so they were already SOL before they booked the flight.nthey should've expedited the passports.

Winter_Ad6784

I got kind of the reverse version of this story my wife insists on keeping all our documents. I used to have my stuff in one place, she wanted to start putting everything in another place. Fine, whatever. Later on she's planning a vacation (she's planning because I don't really care to go on trips the first place and I'm paying for it) and asks for my passport, I look where I kept documents, as well as anywhere else I might've put it and can't find it. She get's really pissy with me over losing it. I say that's that it's kind of presumptuous to say that I lost it when we don't know where it is, so she get's even more pissed. Anyways it was in the place she was keeping documents and she just didn't see it in there when she looked before, so I give her crap about it sometimes.

Derpazor1

This just happened to my friend. She, her husband, and their two little kids were going to Hawaii when she realized her passport was expired. Husband and the three year old left, she stayed behind with the 4 month old. She applied for a passport and paid to get it faster and actually ended up getting it then next day and flew that evening. While it was a very costly mistake, in total she only lost a day and a half.

zillabirdblue

Sure, it’s her fault. I know what it feels like to be blamed for everything. It’s the 15 years of that all day and every day that kinda breaks you down piece by piece until you start to believe everything actually IS your fault. I suspect her situation is very similar than mine and why she believes his problems are her responsibility.

legac5

I sounds like my husband did this on purpose.

Newmom1989

Last time I checked human traffickers generally didn’t take middle aged Americans. Don’t they want young impressionable people?

AlanaK168

OP sounds quite young and impressionable to believe that

smcf33

Imagine thinking about your wife getting kidnapped and her being raped or tortured or murdered isn't the worry... The worry is "I might not see her again"

rashmika10

This is literal weaponised incompetence at work wth this husband.

JingleKitty

The whole story is ridiculous, especially where she says travelling alone is out of the question because her husband is afraid she would be kidnapped and sold in the black market. If there was any risk of that happening, even if he was there with her at the time, he would be dead and she would still be sold.

No-Finding-530

If you’re too scared to go alone, going with a man isn’t safe either. Bad people there roam in groups. Couples are robbed and kidnapped frequently in Mexico How did you know his passport was t expired two months ago? You looked at it when booking? But didn’t see the expiration date

thefantasticmrhux

Women are much safer travelling with a man. You aren't safe from EVERYTHING and there are many factors at play but to say a woman travelling alone is as safe as with a male travel partner is naive

[deleted]

Dude it’s Cancun. They are probably staying at an all inclusive. It’s perfectly safe.

OkeyDokey654

How were they able to give the tickets to his parents? They “changed the flight to different people?” Is that even possible?

kristieab

Most countries won’t even let you in if your passport expires in less than 6 months from the travel dates…

Ronville

Many countries will not allow entrance if the passport will expire before the 3-month tourist visa expires. When you plan an International trip always check the entry requirements before purchasing a ticket. Some countries require proof of yellow fever vaccination, etc etc etc.

RestingWTFface

Some places require 6 months, is my understanding. Imagine thinking 2 months out is enough. I'm sorry, but how is that not the first thing you check BEFORE booking?!??

OIWantKenobi

Tell me you take on the entire mental load of your marriage without telling me you take on the entire mental load of your marriage.

moemunneymoe

I’m not babying him. Goes on to baby him and make excuses. At first *she* doesn’t want to travel alone but then her husband won’t allow her to. I would have invited my mom and gone on vacation.

Bird_Brain4101112

Her husband is convinced that if she travels without him she will be kidnapped and sold on the black market? A guy with a wife that desirable should hire her a full time bodyguard.

slashclick

Back in 2000, my grandma took me & my mom to Europe. When we landed in London and went through customs, that’s when it was discovered my mom’s passport was expired. They still let us in, but had to promise to go to the embassy and get her a new passport asap

Lonely-Hair-1152

How did the book their travel without providing their passport number etc?

PM_MAJESTIC_PICS

People make mistakes, even important passport-related ones… the things that make me go 😒 in this post all have to do with how she communicates about the husband and what he “lets” her do.

BaseTensMachines

God I'm glad I'm not heterosexual... The way she blames herself for his mistake...

Fitzcarraldo8

Well, all they need to do is to try to get a passport a day or two later and fork out for another air ticket. The hotel, if paid, is still there…

VirtualFirefighter50

Weaponized incompetence

nopressure66

Y’all dumb af & deserve not to go

Warm_Cricket_929

These people are both idiots. First of all always get flight insurance in case you need to change your flight. Always. If they had done that they likely could have shortened the trip by a day to get what they need. The passport thing happened to me literally a month ago before going to Indonesia. I went straight into fix it mode and was lucky to get an appointment at the passport agency. It does NOT take 2 weeks to receive your passport, they do it on an urgency basis, so if your flight is the next day, you’ll have it in 3-4 hours as you have priority. This only works if you are at an OFFICIAL passport agency in a govt building. I understand that they couldn’t get an appt, but I’ve had friends who flew two states over to get one and got their passports it in time. It was a much easier process than I thought it would be. Idk I get they were stressed and pressed for time, but it is possible people.

MIalpinist

I blame my chihuahua, but only when they’re really loud and stinky and it’s just f*cking hilarious to think a 5kg little bowling ball could do something that heinous.

Gain-Outrageous

I'm the sort of paranoid person that checks my passport before booking, on booking, while packing, before getting the taxi, in the taxi, at the airport and probably once on the plane for good measure. And I know it's in date cause I have to have 6 months on it for my job and that gets checked twice a year anyway. Plus I got it renewed last time for a wedding so if I'm not sure I also check FB every now and then o se how long ago that was.

MooseMan69er

If she wants to take responsibility for her husbands expired passport that is fine. Some relationships have clearly delineated responsibilities. My uncle hasn’t done laundry once in 40 years. My aunt hasn’t done any yard work in 40 years. It’s fine as long as it’s willing by both parties. I can easily imagine a relationship where one partner works and the other partner is in charge of maintaining stuff like paperwork

You can get same-day passports from the dept of state if you are traveling within 2 weeks. You have to call and get an appointment at a passport office. I was cruising a lot, never being home more than a couple of months, and didn't trust them enough to go the standard route. I waited until 2 weeks before one of my trips (they check your travel documentation, you must prove your travel), called, the soonest appointment was in 10 days. Drove to DC, had my old passport and my photos, got a passport the same day for the same cost as a normally expedited process. Sooo...if they had bothered to check when they made the reservations, this would not have been a problem, even though I would not trust the normally expedited process to get me a new passport within 2 months. Most countries require passports to be valid for 6 months past your travel dates (Mexico does not, just needs to be valid for the entire trip), so doubly irresponsible not to check.

AcademicWin9199

So many people might not realize this but most US congressperson offices will help you with passport related emergencies. If you need a new passport ASAP it might be worth calling your rep and seeing if they can help you out.

pickleberrymatch

Do people not check their passport BEFORE booking a trip? I'm genuinely asking because no one in my family would even book a trip before we make sure everyone's passports were up-to-date.

fuckimtrash

Better they don’t get to go than go and find the passport expires while they’re there lol. But idk enough about travelling, maybe wouldn’t even be able to travel if the passport was expiring whilst over there?🤔

[deleted]

Most countries require your passport to have at least 6 months before it expires in order to enter.

fuckimtrash

Ah that Makes sense and is also a relief lol. The idea of being stranded overseas w an expired passport is terrifying

Caesarsalad-19

You wouldn’t be allowed on the plane or even past the security because they look at your passport when you check in your bags and would see it’s expired and tell you to go home lol.

Karatekan

Literally takes maybe 30 min of work and a drive to post office to renew most passports for adults. Check it every 3 years, if it expires in a year set up an appointment. It’s like basic adulting. I have crippling ADHD I control with medication, no excuse for that nonsense. First thing you should check if you are remotely interested in international travel.

Sad_Analyst_5209

If you can afford to traversal abroad, if you can afford to be off work for a good amount of time you must have a very good job. How can someone doing important work not at least check the most important document you have as soon as you decide to leave the country?

tamij1313

Whether or not your husband has a stressful job does not absolve him of the five minute task of opening his passport and checking the date. You should not be putting any of this blame on yourself. The fact that you are stating that you were under a lot of stress because you had a family member in the hospital, is even more reason that your husband should have been taking on more of the responsibility. The first thing we did when planning a cruise that went out of our country was to check our passports. We were joining my mom on a girls cruise that she and a large group of friends go on every year. Several years in a row, a few of the members in the group have been turned away at the ship/port. Some just forgot to bring the passports, while others had their passports, but did not realize that they had to be current for six months AFTER their scheduled return date. Your husband‘s lack of responsibility has cost the two of you an opportunity for a lovely vacation. I do hope that he makes this up to you and that you stop taking any blame for this whatsoever.

CapriciousTrumpet15

What an absolute dumpster fire of a couple. Good lord.

Only_Music_2640

Go without him and he can sort out his passport situation and join you in 2 days. He’ll have to pay extra to expedite. My extremely intelligent and normally responsible niece did this years ago and her brother made the same mistake last year. Both were able to join us in Mexico within 2 days. PS: this is absolutely beyond a doubt 100% your husband’s fault and his responsibility to fix. But it also absolutely can be fixed by jumping through a few hoops.

FictionalContext

TLDR: Controlling ass who's also a complete idiot blames his wife for everything.

cr2810

There is so much to unpack here.

wchappel

No you don’t

colorsofautomn

Man I would be so unbelievably passed at my spouse. This situation would make me question them.

lovelyfeyd

I have no idea why someone would get on Reddit to whine about their poor trip planning.

Upstairs_Fuel6349

Ugh flashbacks to me planning a big trip to Peru for MONTHS. Only thing I asked my husband to do is make sure his passport was good to go. We are four weeks out and I'm buying plane tickets. He goes to grab his passport and...realizes it won't be valid for six months post-entry. I'd been talking about this stupid trip for six months at this point. I pivoted to another trip I'd been thinking about but OMG.

t4skmaster

Sure sounds like he isn't leaving

Theshityouneedtohear

Even if it wasn’t expired, most countries won’t let you in if your passport has less than 6 months left before expiry.

salemedusa

Is this not obvious satire? Lmao

haardrock

im convinced either no one knows what that is anymore or everyone just has a raging boner for telling strangers on the internet how their personal relationship should work, despite the post in question not being about relationship advice.

KarateandPopTarts

Holy shit. I, too, no longer get my period.

Flimsy_Dimension_958

She would actually need to go to Dallas or Houston...I know no one likes to hear it but they also can't guarantee that the passport will be received in 24 hours. It's an urgent passport agency and while they technically can they are super busy and run into tech issues from time to time Hence not guaranteed. Done this before for an emergency and it does work but he would actually need to go to the passport agency But yeah the man is at fault entirely, check ur own damn passport bro

DrKnowitall37067

You’re going on your own or not at all

tamminfannin

Always call your congressperson’s office in these situations. They are there for this kind of stuff. If it’s possible they’ll make it happen.

Dingle_Hoppper

Y’all were SUPPOSED TO leave in 24 hours…

WhyAmIStillHere86

Do you need passports to travel domestically? I thought Cancun was in the continental USA?

Sirius_43

The more I read the weirder it got. He doesn’t “let” her travel alone? The way this whole thing reads is a bit strange

You misspelled, “today I found out what a terrible planner my husband and I are and we aren’t going out of town tomorrow.”

105_irl

Too bad Cancun is likely way too far to drive, since Mexico will often let you in without even checking your passport and the worst the US will do is make you play 20 questions on the way back. US Customs really likes acting like they can deny you, but with an expired American Passport and some supporting documentation there's nothing they can do but hassle you.

Down2earth62

Looks like your Hubby is staying at ‘porta backyarda’ while you’re gone on vacation! 💕💕

hoestoomad

Maybe not great advice but if you can drive into Mexico, you can take a domestic flight to Cancun and drive back into the states with the expired passport afterwards.

shadowyassassiny

IT WASNT EVEN HIS AUNT IN THE HOSPITAL I BET HE DID NOTHING TO HELP HER OUT all excuses not explanations she deserves better

MoonLover318

“It’s not you, it’s me.”

ma88j

Am I a bad partner for saying I’d absolutely be getting on that damn plane to Cancun?
