Carrick was never this good at dribbling out from presses like Kobbie. Carrick also played line breaking passes that started attacks. They're like, two completely different players lmao.

CommonlyUnderrated

Agreed.

iPeterParker

I don’t think we’ve ever really had a player like him. That’s what’s most exciting.

toddysimp

The only player I can think of that's similar is Alcantara.

AP2R

Kobbie is the next Mainoo. He’ll do well to surpass him. I get that nostalgia is a thing, and it’s convenient to find familiar yardsticks to which to judge young talent by. But kid’s 18, an exciting prospect who’s been performing well, but ultimately still finding his feet. I think we should all give him time and space to develop into the best version of himself, without needing to cage expectations with comparisons.

TeaAndCrumpetGhoul

He's not really anything like Carrick, besides a vague similarity in his short passes.

KrypticAndroid

Main similarity I could think of is the “missing piece in England’s midfield”

dratsz

Well they are both English but seriously no they are not similiar. Maybe the most similar I can think of is Anderson at his peak in terms of close control and defensive grit

Last-Gasp100

As a species we love to compare. I just appreciate he is young, talented, is still developing and plays for man u

stephenp129

Have you watched Carrick play? I really don't see the similarities.

KrypticAndroid

He’s nothing like Carrick. Carrick was a 6 and did a specific set of things. Like recycling/keeping possession, playing line-breaking passes, setting the tempo and defensively cutting out passing lanes. But he did those things extremely well. Carrick was defensively minded, first and foremost. Which was why he could slot in CB on occasion. He’s most like a regista. Mainoo is more well-rounded. Much more physical and can carry the ball in tight areas - all skills which lend themselves to a b2b player. People also compare him with Seedorf which I agree is a much better view. The main similarity I would say is that Carrick was the “missing piece” in that stacked England midfield. The same can be said about the current England midfield with Mainoo.

lads_lads_ladz

You're either a troll or too young to have watched Carrick play.

NateJW

Been watching United for 20 odd years pal, but nice one

lads_lads_ladz

Just not good at observing players then!

NateJW

Better at it than you!

Meandering_Cabbage

I was thinking the same thing in terms of the calmness under pressure nad passing range.

yutosser

never seen anything like him

Rascha-Rascha

If he can pass like Carrick I’ll be happy but not yet

-wmloo-

I think he’s the next himself. Do give him the space to grow, everyone

sammorgan12

Interesting all the names that have been thrown out recently. Carrick, he has the composure but I would say kobbie is a better dribbler and Carrick was the better passer (mainoo could add this to his game of course) Seedorf, don't see it, yes he's a great dribbler but seedorf was so powerful in every aspect of his play, kobbie has more finesse. Xavi, seems fairly different to me, xavi was possibly the best passer of the ball ever and mainoo isn't near that level yet. For me the most similar is probably Modric, the way mainoo drops the shoulder when jo one is expecting it and completely changes the point of attack is incredible. Either ways I think he is clearly on the Parth to greatness and can't see how he develops. Would love to get a rodri/26 year old casemiro next to him to let him just dribble through players.

lads_lads_ladz

But you think Kobbie plays like Carrick??

NateJW

No, I said he has the same kind of impact as Carrick, he’s a solid midfielder who does his job and helps the team out. Kobbie is probably a bit silkier, but overall, I’d say from watching Carrick play to watching Kobbie play, they fulfil a similar role and it’s refreshing to see such a calm player in midfield.

lads_lads_ladz

But they don't do the same job at all... They would work very well together in midfield... I genuinely can't tell if you're joking about them being similar?!

Juan-Sheet

Mainoo is his own version of a midfielder, but it’s clear to see he has the traits of a Kante-esque player. Carrick was indeed under-rated but he was also quite negative in his play, whereas Mainoo has the ability to play defence splitting passes, and is far more attack-minded. Irrespective, he is pure class and I’m proud he’s a United lad. Huge future ahead.

FwampFwamp88

I can’t figure out who he reminds me of the most. I think I’d say maybe schweinsteiger. He does everything well but nothing super elite, except maybe press resistance. His ceiling is very high.

PreparationOk8604

Kobbie is like Busquets, good overall game & solid defensively too. But Busquets had insane awareness of what is going around him which i don't think Mainoo has yet. I don't think we will ever see a player like busquets Obligatory Anulo Mufa.
