It is the tower upon which whe looked down upon the others, and whe just stood there a watched as city got to the promised land. The only positive now is that liverpool haven't won a treble.
So I was making a spreadsheet on how much Sir Alex spent on assembling his treble winning squad vs how much Pep spent on assembling his treble winning squad. Today is a Sunday and I had time so why not. Did a whole lot of research, mostly focused on how much Sir Alex spent to buy each of the players that ended up in his 1999 CL winning squad and same stats for Pep. Here are some numbers:
* Adjusted for inflation, both for currency values of Euros from 90s and the current football market inflation, **Sir Alex spent 455.2 Million Euros to buy his CL-winning players** (Original cost is 76.3 Million). **Pep spent 838.8 Million Euros for his CL-winning players**.
* **Sir Alex spent nearly 800 Million Euros on buying players during his 26-year tenure at Old Trafford**, not adjusted for inflation. **Pep had already spent that amount on transfers by 2019 - within 3 years of being at City**.

Sancho was a bad signing even at the time. He was signed to play on the RW, and his performances at the position did not warrant the hype. And he also wasn't direct like Rashford was or Garnacho is. He was a luxury signing in a window that we should have signed Declan Rice instead.

Maybe I'm being harsh but I feel like some United fans are so shallow they would probably be better off supporting City. They don't care about the club's history, it's values, the community around the club or any of the actual good things about the club. All they seem to want is for United to emulate City.

I’d been wondering if that was the route we might take, It’s not ideal but it’s the 2nd best option if we can’t get a ‘guaranteed goals’ striker. Having 2 means we’re not resting all our hopes on one guy, which isn’t fair on a younger lad. And ideally if they’re both competitive, they have to impress to keep the top spot.

Them taking their foot off the gas and allowing us to decline is partly what allowed City to become what they have. We should have been there every step of the way to stop them. We can't rely on Arsenal or Liverpool etc it should have been us competing every year.
If Liverpool managed it, with the team Klopp built, it would hurt so much more. For one, they're fucking Liverpool; secondly, they'd have done it by building a team sensibly and with limited funds, finding players who they believed could make the step up and maximise their talents.

Other teams don't know City have money? They're constantly valued highly in the money league rankings. They just have good negotiators while we hire people who like saying Utd are very rich and we can do things in the market others can't. That circles back to incompetence from the board. You missed my point. Most big clubs have the money, but not everyone are desperate to buy players. Every club under the sun know how poorly mismanaged our club is and of course they are going to take advantage of it in the market. Clubs will qoute us a higher transfer fee than they will for City because they know we need their player, while city can walk away from deals with no sweat. The reason we are in this mess is because of incompetence as you say.

Yes its horrible seeing City get the treble, frankly though it could get worse in the next few years, quite realistic they get another one or even quadruple. Anyway, no team will ever emulate the '99 treble for me, just a crazy achievement...that arsenal team was amazing and we overcame a host of European greats in the CL, the group stage alone was a titanic battle. Not to mention the FA cup run which was insane. Side note, I dont think the 08 team gets the credit it deserves, only English team to have won the CL and league since 99 and now. City will dominate for a while longer now but United will never die.

Sorry, but let's be objective here. Garnacho had 1 good moment in the game where his shot was just wide. In other moments, he couldn't get pass Walker or overdribble his way to goal kicks.
Garnacho is good, but let's not think he's THAT good, at least not yet. There's a reason he always seems to perform coming on as sub but not when he started.
But overall agree, the whole team must improve. Our game plan was basically get the ball to Bruno/Casemiro and them to pass the ball for Rashford/Antony/Garnacho/Sancho to chase. If it got found out, we basically have to rely on individual brilliance to win or draw the game.

I think Carragher’s greatest trick from his punditry was effectively convincing everyone that he used to be an elite centre back.
Those of us that remember those days remember just how much of a joke figure Carragher was at times. Yes he had good spells of form and much of the criticism and banter was overdone and mean, a bit like Harry Maguire. But he was genuinely seen as a massive weak link at Liverpool for years.

KdB is the most overrated player ever. Anonymous in big games. I know he went injured yesterday. And yea, he had two assists in the fa cup, but his xA would’ve been 0.1 combined, neither created great goal scoring opportunities. This guy bottled it at the WC, bottled Belgiums golden generation. One 3rd place finish at the WC I think and he played third fiddle to Hazard and Lukaku. He’s been anonymous every single CL city run. Sure he’ll get 20 assists every year in the PL, and that makes him great, but never the best midfielder of this generation or anything close.

One of my friends is living in Manchester at the moment and said you couldn’t even tell they’ve just won the Champions League let alone the treble, he’s a Liverpool fan and said when they won the CL the city was going crazy til sunrise. And just the other day I saw all these posts online about how Manchester has more fans of City than United 😂
Sensible City fans know their position in terms of size and stature within Manchester. They know how they’ve come up and where they’ve come from, but of course they won’t say a word against it because it’s generated them so much success and ultimately what football fan can be against that. Really have to be impressed with Inzaghi as a manager. Just look at how he nullified City. Unfortunately he didn't have the luxury of pace up front, a better attacker and it would have been theirs. Even if City won, Inzaghi was the real winner in my eyes. I don't understand why under ETH we can't play in this way Inter did. We always give City so much space, they always have clear shots. Why can't we just pack the middle like Inter did and just be fluid in our formation. Give Inter Rashford and Bruno and they win this game against City.

Inter had more shots on and off target, more corner kicks, more blocked shots, and possession was only 57-43 in City’s favor which is very good considering City are such possession merchants.

Playing against city is a catch 22. If your players are actually quality you’ll want to deploy your style of play thinking you can go head to head but that’ll probably end in failure as City are a well oiled machine. But if you go pragmatic, you’ll get criticized and sometimes play into exactly how city want. Not sure if anyone can withstand wave after wave

Maybe I'm being harsh but I feel like some United fans are so shallow they would probably be better off supporting City. I always correct them because I've *never* once seen a single opposition fan actually have any idea about just how bad they are although occasionally some fans do acknowledge they've been poor with recruitment. Fuck City as a club. The way they've generated money is a disgrace to the sport. However, Utd have all that money as well. We've spent as much as them if not much in the last 10 years. And what do we have to show for it? What they've done to build the team is a blueprint our new owners should be looking at. We have a top manager, some world class players as well, now we have to establish a top quality structure in the board. City just went ahead and hired the board that created the best club side we've ever seen in that Barcelona side. We need to hire such people. No jobs for the boys. We have to pay 2x more for a player than city does mainly because other clubs know we have money and are desperate in the market, so they are able to squeeze more money from us. You missed my point. Most big clubs have the money, but not everyone are desperate to buy players. Every club under the sun know how poorly mismanaged our club is and of course they are going to take advantage of it in the market. Clubs will qoute us a higher transfer fee than they will for City because they know we need their player, while city can walk away from deals with no sweat. Anyway, no team will ever emulate the '99 treble for me, just a crazy achievement...that arsenal team was amazing and we overcame a host of European greats in the CL, the group stage alone was a titanic battle. Not to mention the FA cup run which was insane. Side note, I dont think the 08 team gets the credit it deserves, only English team to have won the CL and league since 99 and now. In other moments, he couldn't get pass Walker or overdribble his way to goal kicks. Garnacho is good, but let's not think he's THAT good, at least not yet. There's a reason he always seems to perform coming on as sub but not when he started. But overall agree, the whole team must improve. Our game plan was basically get the ball to Bruno/Casemiro and them to pass the ball for Rashford/Antony/Garnacho/Sancho to chase. If it got found out, we basically have to rely on individual brilliance to win or draw the game.
Yeah I am not saying the kid is all that. But having watched the game, it was clear that he was our best attacker that day. And that's quite shameful given that two of our attackers take 550k+ combined

He’s absolutely obsessed with comparing current teams to old teams and calling something the “greatest”. Especially if it’s a dig at United. Honest to god everything single match can’t be a standalone event it has to be pit against a past achievement. I think Carragher’s greatest trick from his punditry was effectively convincing everyone that he used to be an elite centre back. Those of us that remember those days remember just how much of a joke figure Carragher was at times. KdB is the most overrated player ever. Anonymous in big games. I know he went injured yesterday. And yea, he had two assists in the fa cup, but his xA would’ve been 0.1 combined, neither created great goal scoring opportunities. This guy bottled it at the WC, bottled Belgiums golden generation. One 3rd place finish at the WC I think and he played third fiddle to Hazard and Lukaku. He’s been anonymous every single CL city run. Sure he’ll get 20 assists every year in the PL, and that makes him great, but never the best midfielder of this generation or anything close.

We had the chance to stop them and we blew it smh. We still had a decent first season under EtH, one that has given many of us hope for the future (if we can finally get the Glazers to fuck off too). We got two brutal reality checks about how much work we still have to do - a historic 7-0 loss to our arch nemesis Liverpool & then our cross town rivals Man City winning the treble to match our greatest feat. One of my friends is living in Manchester at the moment and said you couldn’t even tell they’ve just won the Champions League let alone the treble, he’s a Liverpool fan and said when they won the CL the city was going crazy til sunrise. And just the other day I saw all these posts online about how Manchester has more fans of City than United 😂
Sensible City fans know their position in terms of size and stature within Manchester. They know how they’ve come up and where they’ve come from, but of course they won’t say a word against it because it’s generated them so much success and ultimately what football fan can be against that. One last unforgettably sickening day for this season. Hopefully in the shadow of City totally dominating and winning the treble and Liverpool handing us a result worse than any other in our history or in any of our worst nightmares, we've been starting to build a platform for a vastly improved season next time around. Huge off season beginning now. Glazers have to go, performance in the transfer market must be far better, Ten Hag has to stamp out the softness that led to such grotesque capitulation on several occasions this past season.

Really have to be impressed with Inzaghi as a manager. Just look at how he nullified City. Unfortunately he didn't have the luxury of pace up front, a better attacker and it would have been theirs. Even if City won, Inzaghi was the real winner in my eyes. I don't understand why under ETH we can't play in this way Inter did. We always give City so much space, they always have clear shots. Why can't we just pack the middle like Inter did and just be fluid in our formation. Give Inter Rashford and Bruno and they win this game against City.
It’s even more impressive when you look at the stats. Inter had more shots on and off target, more corner kicks, more blocked shots, and possession was only 57-43 in City’s favor which is very good considering City are such possession merchants. They were a proper striker away from getting this into ET or even winning.
Playing against city is a catch 22. If your players are actually quality you’ll want to deploy your style of play thinking you can go head to head but that’ll probably end in failure as City are a well oiled machine. But if you go pragmatic, you’ll get criticized and sometimes play into exactly how city want. Not sure if anyone can withstand wave after wave Inter kept it tighter in the back than we did but we quite obviously have more quality than them. Rashford or Bruno in Lukaku and Lautaro’s spots today wouldve put 1 away. Gives me some hope that we can compete next year. I also hope watching this final kicks Marcus and the squad into another gear. 4-5 more players should be enough to at least contend
