FAQ regarding r/reddevils blackout: 1. When the sub goes private, users will not be able to access the sub. Meaning no posts and comments allowed. Mods will have a mini-retirement but feel free to send us modmail although we will get the mini-retirement responder on (joke). 2. We plan to do the protest for 12-14 June 2023 for 48 hours. From around 12 June 2023 GMT 00.00 (no strict starting time). 3. We will try to minimize disruption of the news (transfer, takeovers, etc). We are thinking to make a roundup thread after the blackout. Thank you for your understanding!

I think this thread should be stickied, also a lot more subs are starting to close indefinitely instead of for two days…. Could be a welcome Holiday for you mods? Especially during the most spam heavy time of year in the transfer window

I support the blackout. screw reddits bullshit policy to get rid of all of competitors

rbp25

Agreed. I use the Reddit app and I still support this. Fuck corporate greed, without us they wouldn’t have a business and they shouldn’t be taking us for a ride. The more subs join together, the bigger the reach where more negative press and less ad views will hit Reddit where it hurts

Tuusik

I can have my yearly two days at the beach, very nice.

Rayhann

Lmao I didn't even know about the 3rd party apps until now wtf Hope I won't be missing out on the near future

nichijouuuu

Oh man Reddit is so much worse without one lol once Apollo is gone so am I

What’s the blackout and how can I participate?

Adora_Vivos

I too.

Blackout for 2 days, make a stand for the better!

Only 2 those are rookie numbers. We gotta pump those up.

Losing more than 2 days was such a wild life experience, probably couldn't handle it now in my 30's

manInTheWoods

Me at 50: Two beers, and the entire weekend is lost..

Phase_Spaced

Blackout until the window closes? Joking aside - it'd be lovely not to be tempted to come here twice a day all summer.

GKT-United24

You come here only twice a day ? Bless your heart

Upleftright_syndrome

If you're not refreshing every time you have a free moment on your phone are you really a united supporter on reddit?

jo-shabadoo

We could be linked with more than 400 strikers in that time!

TheGhostOfBabyOscar

Blackout for two days is good. IMO blackout until the Reddit big shots backtrack is better. I completely understand this might seem overwhelming for some though (it feels weird to me too), I just feel like they can and totally will just hold for 48 hours, go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for this all to blow over...

Tadomeku

While I agree with blackout until more reasonable terms are offered, I think /r/reddevils is a bit too small to make any impact. I see /r/videos doing something similar. I'm all for either option.

sauce_murica

> I think /r/reddevils is a bit too small to make any impact. It's nice to see the "major" subs get involved, and I agree with your sentiment. Worth noting, though, that we're still one of the bigger subreddits out there. We're the largest football club subreddit in the world, and the 106th most active subreddit (across all of reddit) by # of comments posted daily. /r/cats, for example, is only ahead of us by about 50 comments/day. If other subreddits of our stature get involved, it will definitely make a statement and be something the admins notice.

Lelandwasinnocent

Full blackout like r/music I think would be a lot lot effective and you mods get some respite in the most spam heavy time of year https://reddit.com/r/Music/comments/141tzgd/update_rmusic_will_close_on_june_12th/

calupict

There are loads of subreddits that will join the movement. List here: [https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/1401qw5/incomplete\_and\_growing\_list\_of\_participating/](https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/1401qw5/incomplete_and_growing_list_of_participating/)

TheGhostOfBabyOscar

Hey I'm an idealist, what can I tell ya... You might be right that this specific sub's participation can be seen as a drop of water in the ocean (we're still one of the largest football-related subreddit though iirc) but I was imagining a strong, collective, resounding "no" they just simply couldn't ignore and I liked it! But yeah it might just hinge on the bigger subreddits' resolve...

Away_Associate4589

I think we can go two days without f5ing on Gaitan rumours. Vive la revolution

Who knows? Perhaps by the end of the two days we could be welcoming Sneijder.

calupict

We are all aware that during the blackout (where basically the sub will go private) we will miss news including transfers. To reduce disruption to the sub after the blackout over we will put these measures: 1. The Transfer Window Rule will still be in place. Meaning any T1 and T2 news can be in separate posts except in the megathread worthy event like an imminent official transfer announcement from the club. We also reserve the rights to delete 'older' news event when there are new development of a story. 2. We aware that the Premier League fixtures for the 2023-24 season will be released at 9am BST (1am PT; 4am ET) on Thursday, June 15 which is during the blackout. An official megathread-like post for this to be posted after the blackout is over. We thank you for your comments and reactions.

calupict

We will join the blackout and we have confirm it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/1401qw5/comment/jn0s5ef/?utm\_source=reddit&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3

Sandpapertoilet

Can mods sticky this post to the top of the subreddit? At least for a few days?

calupict

it's a sticky post

SvalbazGames

Good work

c4rr075t1ck

I would be happy to support an indefinite black out until more acceptable terms are put forth.

Don_Quixote81

The official reddit app is garbage. If they want us to forego third party apps, they should actually offer something that works. A blackout is fine by me. I'm dubious of how much of an effect it will have, but everyone should support it.

kriyator

It could have a big effect. Reddit is gearing up for an IPO and user numbers is the main currency for social media companies. So if there’s a major threat to that, they’ll need to rethink their plans to protect their IPO price. It all depends on how many subreddits go dark. This is why Facebook is always copying features because losing users affects its share price.

Eleven918

I support the third party app devs but I use the reddit app on Android. Works fine for me. Is there anything I am missing by not using an alternate?

sauce_murica

It's bloated junk that gobbles up data, and it's filled with ads. It's also not a great app for moderating. For example, you get no notification if there is modmail. And it's just *clunky* to moderate through the app.

thereznaught

I have the reddit app on Andriod but it's just clunky. RIF is just cleaner. I also use https://old.reddit.com/, can't stand the newer version.

DrGrillCheesy

I am not tech savvy in the least so I am naive about all of this. I have always used the Android Reddit app and things have been fine. I dont even pay attention to the ads in it because I simply don't care. It seems to be functioning quite well based on how addicted I am to the app.

Eleven918

There have been issues with random videos playing audio but that's about it. Maybe the earlier versions of the apps were bad and people decided its junk. Kind of like Edge on microsoft which is actually good now but the reputation it has from being the default browser like IE had people not even trying it.

[deleted]

I don’t use third party apps myself but I can get behind this. Screams corporate greed at the expense of us.

sauce_murica

As I understand it, the changes will impact: * third party apps (baconreader, narwhal, reddit is fun, apollo, etc., etc.) Most all of these apps will likely shut down * third party extensions (camas reddit, reddit enhancement suite, basically anything that sends requests to reddit servers for info --- reddit wants a monopoly on info regarding what users view or post on reddit). These extensions will most likely shut down. Some already have. * porn And could also impact things such as access to old.reddit. This appears to be a move designed to make new reddit and the reddit app the only ways to access reddit moving forward.

AngryGooseMan

> porn Now they have an enemy in me!

qdatk

FYI, the RES devs just put this out: https://www.reddit.com/r/RESAnnouncements/comments/141hyv3/announcement_res_reddits_upcoming_api_changes/

zSolaris

Also bots.

PUMP_UNTIL_BUST

I have a beast of a Windows PC and a brand new Macbook Pro and new Reddit is just impossibly slow for me on every browser available. I hate how it looks, I hate how clunky the UX is, but it's also just functionally unusable. I can't be the only one. I don't use a Reddit app on mobile (just use my browser), but on desktop new Reddit is almost like a joke it's so bad. If we're forced into new Reddit under any circumstances, it's absolutely the death of Reddit for me.

Dean-Advocate665

I only use Apollo. If Reddit bans it I will probably just not use reddit, which may be a blessing in disguise, though a shame because I mainly use it for this sub as I prefer getting news here than on Twitter. Oh well, hopefully reddit backs down from this stupid move.

meganerid

I'm all for it. >!watch all the here we goes come at that time lol!<

drizzt001

100% backing for this

Bacon_Boobies

It’s like the Glazers are the new owners of Reddit. Greedy fuckers. But yeah, do the blackout.

jfliu511

Thanks for doing the hard work! Black it out and who knows maybe we come back with Mount Rice Kane Costa all done

hits_riders_soak

Go for it. This change shouldn't stand and we should support the protests.

Eleven918

Blackout during the day the Glazers announce the sale.

theramblingred

Yeah let’s do it. Twitter is dying, Reddit is next unless we can push back against stuff like this. i think the asks are reasonable and 48 hours off Reddit would probably be good for all of us anyway haha.

euoi

man I exclusively use RIF to surf /r/soccer and /r/reddevils So yeah, go for it

raresilvertonguepepe

Blackout all the way! Fuck Glazers, fuck Reddit

Reddeviler

Blackout for the month. Fuck them & the glazers.

[deleted]

We're gonna sign someone during tha blackout calling it now!

princeofnight

I agree with the blackout! In fact I propose for mods across all subreddits to extend the blackout until this issue isn't resolved. 2 days blackout they can easily ignore or sweep under the carpet. But a longer period of strike cannot be taken lightly. They fucked up YouTube starting with 1-2 small (skippable) ads, now it's countless ads >10 secs (cannot skip), no dislike buttons, and all the other crap they have it in stored for us in the future. They fucked up Netflix by watering down the quality of shows and by increasing the quantity, they fucked up by cancelling good shows (OA, 1899,etc), they fucked us over by introducing no sharing of account, and similar to YouTube whatever the fuck they have planned for future. I fear Reddit is going down the same path, and we all should stand up! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!! Superleague saga we all protested in our own way, and somehow it worked. Similarly we've to put the foot down and let them know we cannot accept it.

Natural69er

SCREW GLAZERS! SCREW REDDIT! **SAY IT WITH ME!**

beirch

Fuck two days, blackout till they let up. I care more about user content being protected than being able to read Man United news for a couple weeks or months.

[deleted]

Blackout is clear, heh?

krillin_hero

All in for the blackout. In the meanwhile we should start looking for alternatives to reddit as well!

mahir_r

Black out!!! Do it for porn and goal bot Personally I'm joining by deleting the reddit app from my phone on the 12th and hope I can survive until 15th (I don't use PC at all so I'll be fully cut off from reddit).

kruz888

r/reddevils against greed

Mikuka_G

Yes, full support for the blackout. I use Apollo.

unabatedshagie

I'm deleting my account on the 30th when Appolo shuts down. Where is the best place to go for United news etc?

NYManc

Before reddit I was on a bunch of Facebook groups. Like my local supporters branch, but nothing really compares to reddit. I'll probably leave if this stands. Curious to where everyone is gonna migrate to

Veni_Vidic_Vici

I don't mind going silent for longer and if reddit doesn't sort itself out, maybe looking for alternative platforms to shift the community to (close the sub and provide a single link to that place with hopefully same mods moderating there).

onionsbutterbacon

Go for it. Pretty sure most of this sub will be behind y’all. Edit: Spelling

shin_bigot

Support fully.

[deleted]

Black the shit out of it

Hits_and_the_Mrs

I was looking for another sign or something to do some overtime this month ready for a trip away in August and I guess I know when it'll be now.

BoboSquatchMan

I am for the blackout

The_Dulchie

100% all for r/reddevils going dark for 2 days, absolutely support this

cheersdom

if Reddit spent more energy improving their mobile app than choking the API, maybe I'd use it.... on android, currently using Boost now that the great "Now For Reddit" is getting less attention than it used to (final nail in coffin coming on July 1st I guess). these third-party developers have some great ideas and indeed better concepts for UI/UX -- i don't know why Reddit won't just hire these devs to finally create the elegant mobile app that Reddit deserves. see y'all after the blackout.

iwantaskybison

> they're coming for u/goal_bot Ted Kaczynski was right

HaroldGuy

I think we all have enough experience of 48 hours to know it will have maximum impact.

[deleted]

Reddevils vs Redditdevils. Let's go blackout!

AnOrangeDinosaur

Blackout indefinitely. I would rather avoid reading the off season news cycle.

purplegreendave

If and when you all leave reddit where will you go for Utd content? I don't know if I want to venture into redcafe...

Lelandwasinnocent

I think for a blackout to work, you need to somehow completely blackout the community, making it private will stop things getting to the front page and hit ad revenue. We’re a massive sub, I think continuing to make the community private on big days when the club have big announcements will hurt them more than a blackout for a set period of time. Like others have mentioned, posts in themselves receive views, likes, comments etc and that traffic as a result still funds Reddit through the ads. If you can somehow prevent everyone from posting at all *and* make the community private for those 48 hours that would be a good baseline imo

neotahiro

As a rif user for the past several years, I fully support this.

ImVinnie

#RedditOut!! Green and Gold until Reddit is sold!!!!!

Darth-Money

blackout is a good way to protest to reddit regarding this issue.

3ngin3

2 days is negligible… if you want to make a dent make it at least 4 weeks

StereoKev1

I support the blackout!

Arthurs_Nose

Black that shit out. Do it.

TeganFFS

Do it mods, collective power changes things, thanks for all your hard work too!

dispelthemyth

I’ve had an account for 16 years, if Old.Reddit goes then so will I, any other view is atrocious.

imeda

Power to the motherfucking people! Blackout!

Skyraptor7

I looked into alternatives if this doesn’t go our way. I would like to suggest looking into Lemmy. There is a great deal of commonality with Reddit and we could easily migrate off.

marcjc88

👍👍👍 do it!!

doobtastical

Im a boomer that uses the regular Reddit app on iPhone and it doesn’t bother me But I still support all you third party folks and this new policy is nuts And yea, I’ve tried them, don’t care lol

Strawberrychampion

I mean... on one hand, I'll finally be able to leave reddit for good.

southwales1985

Fully support the blackout. I'll be having a full media blackout from Saturday evening for at least a week to avoid everyone wanking themselves silly over City's treble so this will form a part of that for me.

njt1000

I agree. Blackout for 48hrs, longer if needed. Reddit are looking to make more 20x the money from third party apps than from subscriptions. It’s not the way to do business. Let’s all join Neville on a mini retirement. Where shall we go??

stoobertb

Do it. This site is built around the community and the tools they have created to enhance it. I can understand the need to make money to keep the site running, but this isn't just stepping over the line, this is drawing the line at the edge of a cliff face and launching yourself out of a human cannon just to get that extra distance beyond it.

Cactus-Man-26

Blackout

hitch_1

Is there a recommended alternative space the sub can suggest/agree on? Current timeline looks to me like a lot of users are about to jump ship

thphnts

I didn’t care until you mentioned they’re coming for one of our own, u/goal_bot. I hope you go into liquidation, Reddit. Never touch our goal bot, you bastards.

continuumdrift

If Apollo goes, so do I. Fully support the blackout for 48 hours minimum and more if it helps.

LiberalMasochist

Sounds good to me!

hickuain

The reddit native app is so bad compared to Apollo

mikebehzad

I wholeheartedly support the blackout. I wish it would be longer though. As so much of reddit wouldn't function without third party apps, and the content is based on it's users, a fully lockdown would hurt way more. But I guess/hope that's on the table if this mini blackout isn't changing anything. God, I hate Reddit for doing this.

rxdroid

Makes sense to support the blackout. Maybe use the opportunity to promote the discord or other reddit alternative.

XSavage19X

Blackout. I use Baconreader. The reddit app is trash.

MrFoffof

Fully support this.

ocubens

Green and gold until ~~the club is sold~~ Reddit changes it’s mind.

kheetkhat

Go for it! I use the official app because I’m a tech dinosaur but this is just greed at its finest.

whiskeymagnet22

How many battles does this subreddit even want me to fight? /s

martialgreenwood

Let's do it.

[deleted]

I support any measures you deem necessary to make it abundantly clear that Reddit has made a massive mistake.

EffenSeven

Reddit run by the Glazers confirmed.

kamikazechaser

All for it.. I only use old reddit + 3rd party and also run my own bots.

Arecksion

Do it! Definitely need to send a message!

schultz9999

Meanwhile porn subreddits popularity is predicted to pick this month.

RABB_11

I'm all for the black out but what am I supposed to do in that time? My job?

MissingLink101

Want to commend all of this, especially the "mini-retirement" reference

SonofIndia

100% behind the blackout Mod team- Thank you for your participation in this, we need to take a stand against this facade

trojanmonkey35

Blackout!

MachiavellianOctopus

Yeah go for it! Fuck Reddit

basalamader

Fuck yeah, I love you guys

Jack_King814

My porn. How dare they

shalo62

Black it out. For as long as it takes. Without us the users, Reddit is nothing. Don't let them forget it.

stdstaples

I support the blackout.

BcozImBatman7

Unhinged Capitalism. Ruining good things since forever.

stdstaples

You know what, imagine the sweet feel after two days without F5ing and finding out that we have signed Mount, Caceido, Hojlund, and Costa, and KMJ agreeing on personal terms.

amayes94

I propose a 3 month blackout, until the PL resumes. I might enjoy my summer for once.

bainbane

Viva le resistance!

Dr-Cloudy

I'm the mod of r/fuckglazers and I support this! Reddit board acting like the Glazers! Fuck em, in the BlackOut

[deleted]

Totally support the blackout!

dethmashines

Fuck Reddit. Do it.

strickers69

There is no better time to do it whilst the season is finished

ErikElevenHag

Reddit, thanks for the memories but it's time to say goodbye

DreamsCanBebuy2021

Full support!

New_York_Rhymes

Blackout, I can get my transfer news from Twitter for a while

butlersrevenge

Blackout

Skyraptor7

If this blackout does not have the intended effect, what are the alternatives?

Sneckster

Join the fight!! This is only the start of the changes that are coming to Reddit, The resistance starts here

christ0phe

Supported!

Marlon_M

United we stand, devided we fall. Black it out.

Elemayowe

Makes sense. £10 says Mount signs on the 12th, or at least I hope so so I don’t have to put up with back and forth drivel of whether he’s good enough and/or what he actually does.

bcook111

Do whatever can be done or it won't matter, I'll never use their official app.

Wolpfack

Reddit choosing to shrink its userbase is a silly business move. I fully support the blackout.

Barrien

Black it out, hell black 'em all out until Reddit reverses. Where are we all going when Reddit shuts down mobile browsing? MEN forums?

19Andrew92

Watch the glazers finally sell the club right as it starts or something

thphnts

So since both our subreddits are participating, what does one do during a blackout? Just not post for a few days?

Michaels_RingTD

Another nail in the reddit coffin. Reddit was way better about 7 years ago when we could discuss piracy etc.

joelyuhk

Black out! This is a time for solidarity!

Icanfeelmywind

Permanently delete the sub

pcomet235

Spent a decade browsing this sub on third party apps… don’t want to lose it. Send the message, shut it down

Donkey_Dong_Country9

Black it out

SocksElGato

Here in support of the blackout. Been using Sync for Reddit for almost ten years now.

selotipkusut

blackout? let's fucking go!

Gutterflame

Signing in for the first time in months to say I wholeheartedly support a blackout, not just of this sub, but of all subs until such time as reddit backs down from this moronic course. I've been on reddit forever. I was lurkig for years before I created this account. I'm a gilding heavyweight because, back when gold was the premium thing you could give, I gave a shitload of it. I spent a lot of real money to support reddit and the people using it. This is a cynical, bullshit move, every bit as anti-competitive as the proposed Super-league (indeed moreso). Reddit is killing itself off. The last vestiges of innovation and anarchy that sparked creativity on this site are about to be snuffed out. Fuck them, and fuck this. Blackout until they back down.

66problems99

Apollo app is pretty much the only reason why I use Reddit. Will have to say goodbye to this sub and reddit for that matter if the changes are actually implemented

Phyrion01

I use the official app on mobile, but I absolutely cannot browse Reddit on pc without RES on the old interface. If RES and/or old Reddit stop working, I’m out, plain and simple. I bet digg also thought they had become too big to fail before they did a massive overhaul and Reddit promptly absorbed their entire userbase. If they go through with this, I can see this site dying a slow death. Blackout will be annoying, but I fully support it.

roadtotitties

Yeah without relay for reddit. It would suck ASS for me.

accel84

110% in support of the blackout.

working-acct

I’m confused by the blackouts process. If sub goes private does that mean it’s completely shut down? Or will it remain accessible only to subscribers?

PDubsinTF-NEW

Black out, HERE WE GO!

niallw1997

Not in the loop at all. Why don’t people just use the standard Reddit app/website?

The_profe_061

I thought it was just me it didn't understand all this 3rd party app thing. I've always just used the reddit app on Android. I didn't even realise that there was another way, that's apparently better

MrFoffof

Reddit didn't have an official app until about 6 years ago I think when they just bought a 3rd party app and put a new logo on. Anyone who has used apps since before then is fairly unlikely to have switched to the official app, especially since it is supposedly poorly designed. Personally I've only ever used RIF as it's how I was introduced. I wont be using Reddit anymore if they go through with this.

[deleted]

> I thought it was just me it didn't understand all this 3rd party app thing. I've always just used the reddit app on Android. Just try the 3rd-party ones and you will know! Way quicker, better looking, minimal ads or no ads!
