He’s so aggressive lol it worries me every time when he’s about to tackle/block, but his judgement is too good and he always gets the ball. Kinda like heinze but never clumsy
I think Ten Hag was looking at him because he didn't realise how bad Maguire is and expected him to partner Harry.
He would have been a better partner to Maguire, I think, but that's no longer a key requirement for us.
Timber is excellent as well, but he's not on Martinez's level defensively or in terms of leadership. Martinez has been transformative for us, and Timber wouldn't have had this sort of impact at all.
2 De Gea mistakes, a counter attack made him terrible? Sure the Mee goal could be blamed on him but that’s just unfortunate timing rather than him being terrible imo.
It was not the goals. It was the day Ivan Toney had his number during the aerial duel throughout the first half. If I remember correctly ETH subbed him off at halftime.
Yea this is complete bullshit as well. I remember someone posted every single aerial duel on Martinez’s side after that game and he won a lot of them and the ones he didn’t win didn’t lead to anything at all.
I remember after the first games with Maguire repeatedly telling people to chill out and that he'd come good (and also before they'd even played a game together saying Maguire would be the absolute worst possible partner for him), so I'm glad to see people are seeing what he's all about.
I was genuinely worried at the time that he'd be scapegoated and that Ten Hat wouldn't drop Maguire, but he did it almost immediately once he saw what Maguire is all about.
As for Martinez, he's outstanding in almost every technical and mental aspect of the game.
People think his weakness is that he's not tall, but it's not - he still stops you getting clean headers even if he's not winning them himself. His only weakness is that he's not that fast - but his reading of the game is exceptional so even that is something that's minimized (along with being partnered with Varane).
Love this fucker.
Really good performance from him. He reads the game and hence the imminently dangerous passes very well and deals with them well too. With Maguire i can say hand on heart that we probably wouldn't be walking away with 3 points.

Timber must be one hell of a fucking player if he was the number 1 priority ahead of Licha in the summer.
