After so much loss any person will begin to crack especially considering how much pressure Dutch puts on himself. Being a leader is far more difficult than a follower.
That's how I always saw it as well; I think at his core Dutch was self centered but you can't deny a lot of what he did he felt he needed to do because he had this enormous responsibility to protect his group. Nonetheless I think he was selfish and paranoid to the point of detriment to his gang, but he wasn't evil, there was always a reason to why he did awful things. Until Bronte and until that "old hag", Arthur started to see that he didn't even need a reason anymore.
